In this video we do a GM Body Control Module (BCM) tear down, part 13506936, from the Chevrolet Sonic. This particular BCM is also used in several other GM cars and trucks listed below. This part has been superseded and is now serviced as GM 13587704. We go over the location of the 13506936 BCM in the Sonic, how to open it up to reveal the circuit board inside, and show both the location of the particular EEPROM chip this design uses (ST 95320R) in a SOP8 / SOIC8 package style as well as key memory locations and contents.
Besides the Chevrolet Sonic, this same 13506936 BCM is also used in the following 2012 thru 2020 GM models: Chevrolet Corvette, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac CTS, Cadillac XTS, and Cadillac ATS.
The information I've shared here is crucial to re-using salvage yard sourced BCMs, as you cannot change the VIN or odometer contents of an USED BCM with any scan tool (including the MDI). GM simply did not intend to allow the use of used BCMs in performing repair work at its dealerships, but rather only new or remanufactured BCMs that they sell thru their parts departments. A remanufactured Chevy Sonic BCM is in fact just an used one that has simply had the EEPROM programmed with a virgin image from a brand new BCM EEPROMs contents of the same part number, so that the MDI scan tool thinks it is a new one. A BCM EEPROM contains not only the VIN, but also the mileage of the vehicle in these years (obfuscated), as well as the BCM part number, and serial number. It also contains the vehicle configuration data.
I recommend you either just copy your original BCM EEPROM chip image over to the salvage yard replacement (preferred), or alternatively, physically swap the EEPROM chip itself from your original BCM circuit board to the salvage yard replacement BCM using ChipQuik SMD1 (link below). Just be sure the GM part numbers are EXACTLY the same.
