I find it EXTREMELY special that such a young man has such deep sentimental and nostalgic feelings!! It's refreshing to see! I thought I was the only person who felt this way about the mall. I moved to Bay Shore in 1963. I graduated Bay Shore High School in 1970. I used to ride my bike through the mall way before it was enclosed. Soooo many wonderful memories here. Who ever you are, thanks so very much for this video. You're truly blessed with wonderfully unique human qualities. THANKS!
I can't believe they tore down this beautiful historic department store and replaced it with a smaller crappier store! They should have kept it up for a bit longer! I'm not a big fan of the new store because it's just too plain and ugly. I liked the older Macy's stores better from the '40s up to the '90s. They were more pretty looking. Anyway is it true that this store opened up before the rest of the mall did? And why did they made the new one only two floors instead of three and a lot smaller?
Sad for me. In the Sixties through the early to mid Seventies was Macy's Restaurant. I thought it was on the second floor, situated by the bathrooms. They had a children's dessert they called "The Clown". Served in a metal dish, it was an ice cream cone turned upside down with the cone facing up. It had raisin eyes, a cherry nose, and whipped cream around the back and sides that served as the clown's hair/ears. The Clown served as the perfect bribe and reward for us boys to accompany and behave while my mother, grandmother, aunt, and sisters were on their "boring" shopping excursion. With some of them now long gone, I still think about and attempt to reanimate memories of sitting "and being served" in that restaurant. Thank you for filming this and helping me with a little contextual refresher.
This was a great video. Watched the whole thing. A Macy's about 25 minutes from me closed a few years ago, I wanted to take a video like this but didn't get a chance to. The building is still there though.
One more thing....Macy's used to have a pet department as you walked in the East entrance. I worked as a Porter there for a few months after high school and "Cliff" was the supervisor. My sister worked here part time too, while she was in college.
infinitypets 95 They actually sold puppies, parakeets....not sure if I can remember what other pets, but I remember those distinctly. Amazing, right? I remember how that area stunk too!

Great work..thx! I grew up In Bay Shore, and have seen the mall go through many changes while I was living there. Moved to Florida in '82, but come up often to visit family, and always go back to the mall to see any new changes. Anchor store Macys will be missed.
@ 2:18... Garden center later, but originally the POOLS! Yes, Macy's even sold pools back in the day. The door that you just past led to the pet dept. I worked there for 19 years...
At 9:40 that room used to be a restaurant in the 1970's. It was an open archway. I went there with my parents several times. There were big mural size images on the walls of places on Long Island. One, was a picture of a lighthouse. After the restaurant closed, a wall was built and the doors were installed. Does anyone remember what the name of the restaurant was?
***** I don't remember it being a Howard Johnson when I was there. There was a Howard Johnson outside in the parking lot near JCPenny. I remember the bank.
Thee only thing you missed was the vintage telephone booth. If you would've walked down that narrow hall on the 2nd floor, you'd have seen it on the right, just a few feet from the entrance. I spent a TON of change using that phone calling home, my girlfriend and other friends. This video is amazing!!! Thanks again.

I stopped mid Christmas shopping 10 years ago and walked out because it was driving me nuts, and any time I went back after that it was ALWAYS there! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I feel like this Burlington fixtures looked similar to the Otis at Walt Whitman shops and Roosevelt field? Also, the motor of the freight amazing sadly it is gone.
That blows about your mall.. I'm totally diggen all of the old shit they got goin on in there.. why are they tearing it down anyway.. its a waste of money if you already got the same thing there.. even if it is older.. as weall know.. the older stuff is always the cooler! Keep makeing your elevator and escalator vids, they're rad!
I met my husband while we were both working at this store back in 1976 or 1977. Both of our moms worked there as well as the priest that married us mom. Haven't been back to the mall in many years.
Well a lot has changed. When that Macy’s was taken down and rebuilt, the mall was also remodeled. Sears is now Dick’s Sporting Goods and Lord and Taylor is now vacant. JCPenney remains.
