How to replace a DEF active tank and resolve the two CEL codes. P203A Reductant level sensor and P205B Reductant tank temperature sensor. Parts from Bosch part number: F01C600251. Cost about $230 plus any DEF fluid.
Please consider taking a look at the following link that was posted in one of my comments to see if applies to your vehicle before you do any work or pay for any parts!!

@@thanasisdiydad9200 I'd subbed. Is this the part that puts your car to limp mode if sensor goes bad? I had an Active tank sensor replaced at the dealer and it had cost $4000 CAD! Are you saying you've replaced this for about $230 ?
@thanasisdiydad9200
@thanasisdiydad9200 4 года назад
@@WrenchMonkey88 these errors do NOT put the car in limp mode, you just get the CEL for the two parts. I only changed the part that has the level sensors and the tempurature sensor. This part cost me 230 dollars on Amazon. If you want to buy the entire reservoir it will cost more than 1200 dollars only for the part, and probably close to your quote if you fix at the dealer. Thanks for your support. BTW someone in a previous comment mentioned that this part is covered by dealer for 10 years or 120K so you might want to take a look.

Hello I’m back. I promised to report back and I have great news. But first, I want to give specials thanks to THANASIS dad for putting out this DIY video and clearing the road for us so we can do this repair. Also, many thanks to Smassey321 from the Bimmerfest forum for suggesting to rent the Fuel Pump Replacement Kit #27160 from Autozone. I did, and it was so easy to remove/install the big plastic nut with the wrench included in the kit. Well guys, I can tell you for sure this part also fixes fault code 49E1 or P209F Reducing-agent active-tank heating. So if you’re having any of these fault codes, buy it, install it yourself and save couple of thousand dollars. I think the BMW dealer on average is charging $2500 for this repair. I bought this part from Autohaus AZ for $260 tax+shipping included. Time it took me? Around 3 hours because I like to take my time. So there you have it and we’re here to help with questions. And yes THANASIS dad, I’ll take my family for a nice dinner with the money saved. $$$$.

Apologies for the late response. I did end up draining the Active tank but I have seen where there was an inner tank within. Anyway, since I could not get a tube within the inner tank without taking the Active tank off the vehicle, I end up draining from the outer tank. I did drain the passive tank from under the vehicle as well which was quite easy. Did the drive test which did not resolve the issue. Left it with my mechanic and went on vacation. Still need to find out what he did. LOL... But he fixed the problem... The DEF I got from Shell but it was not their Shell brand. I used their shell brand a year back and that had no issue.

Hi - Great Video!. I need to drain the DEF Fluid from the active tank and wondering if you can confirm if draining the fluid from the outer tank will also get rid of the fluid in the inner tank. I currently have a No Start warning for 100km for Incorrect DEF fluid which I topped up a week ago. Thanks
@thanasisdiydad9200
@thanasisdiydad9200 Год назад
Hello Eric. The X5 uses DEF from the active tank and fills it up from the passive as needed to keep active tank filled. The warning sign comes when the level in the active tank is low (and the passive tank is empty or the transfer pump is not working). Draining the passive tank should take care of all the fluid so you can fill with the right stuff. What kind of fluid did you use and you got an error? I hope this helps, and thank you for the support.

How many hours would you say this should take an experienced mechanic (non-BMW)? 3-4hrs? This video might be a huge help to me. I called BMW today and they didn't show this recall for my 2012, but my local mechanic said there is one. Maybe my specific VIN isn't covered? If not, I'll buy this part and have my local install it, instead of taking it to BMW. it's 2 hours away, and I think they charge $200/hr or more. I was worried this repair would cost me $3,000 but now it seems like the worst case might be $600 or 700.

Fault code I’m getting is 49E1 or P209F Reducing-agent active-tank heating. I’m hoping the heating unit seating a the bottom of the tank will be the culprit and this swap will fix it. Then the following weeks "4D16 DeNox System Efficiency" and "452A: Info-Particulate FIlter System" came out. Is it possible that the last 2 error codes could be caused by the DEF Active Tank Sensor (4D32) error code?

Thank you for making this video! My understanding is that the trick to save the money is: instead of replacing the whole active tank (part#: 16197244138), we just need to replace the DEF heater (part#: BC3Z5J225KA) which is part of the tank. And it seems like the genuine heater part is not available, and Bosch part# F01C600251 is a great replacement. Is my understanding correct?
