If you can yes, but lucky for me nothing bad happened so far. Still have the same kit and its running strong. just remember to clean the filter and you'll be fine.

A little late but good luck. Hoped it turned out well.

If you like a bit more performance go cold air. If you want to hear the intake go shortram. Also, depending on your kit, you want something that will prevent you from sucking in water with a cold air because they usually go lower in the engine bay which have the potential to suck in water if you over deep water.

I left them disconnected.

That was removed along with the air box.

This kit did not come with a heat shield. Some do though.

Its not very loud, which is what I wanted, but it you can definitely here in while driving.
