Recently Mercedes Benz USA has provided Warranty Extension on the crankshaft adjusters for the affected vehicles to a total of 10 years / 120,000 miles (whichever occurs first). This Warranty Extension for the following models C250 (years 2012 - 2014), C250 Coupe (years 2012 - 2015), SLK250 (years 2012 - 2015). Good luck to all
Primary symptoms will be 1: a rattle noise upon engine start up 2:check engine light for camshaft position sensor Thanks for making a nice clean professional video. Professional job- Nice to see someone that is not a hack
1- Thank you for educating us on these issues. 2- You saved me $500 since after showing him your video, I got a refund from a Mercedes Specialist shop that ripped me off with a $1,518.21 Bill on this (3-4 hour labor job) in the first place! 3- They just replaced the intake Camshaft adjuster (not the exhaust side) + thermostat assembly and few other seals, gasket, and hose for the air duct. The rattle noise is gone but the check engine light (P0017 = Camshaft Position) is still on! He mentioned that he timed the engine correctly ( Crankshaft at TDC and both Camshaft Adjusters right on the mark). 4- He now says it could be a faulty Exhaust Camshaft Adjuster too (like the way you changed both here in your video) + the engine may have a problem with Timing Chain Adjuster too and that's why the "Check Engine" light stays on! 5- The last question, Do you recommend replacing the exhaust camshaft adjuster first or replace the Timing chain adjuster at the same time? This is costing me huge now! After paying over $1000, the noise is gone but the light is still on! What is your recommendation? Of course, I won't hold you responsible since you don't have the car physically to diagnose this issue! Much appreciated. Reza.
I have a 2014 c250 w204 once a month I use it, I'm still in love with the car and like watching videos of it while I'm out of state driving trucks. On mine the rpms go from 900 at "parked gear," to 800 when I put the transmission in "drive gear" after the engine warms up. But I think it could be some cleaning of the intake or do a flush in the injectors to clean them.
IMPORTANT! As of 2020, this defect with the camshaft adjuster is now covered under Mercedes's extended warranty for 10 years or 120K miles. Mercedes will reimburse the cost if you already paid it out of pocket.
Unfortunately my 2014 just had this problem but I am @ 129K miles. Called the dealership and they say $7K for 1 side and more for both. I tried to argue with them, but its not worth it. any of you recommend a place that I can go -- in the bay area, CA
@@appyass I’m in the Bay Area too but the car was still covered under warranty when I took it in. I went to the Autobahn Motors Mercedes dealership in Belmont, CA and they fixed it at no cost. Not sure what they can do with your situation being slightly over warranty. $7K sounds like too much though. Good luck
hey man awesome video, i am a 10 year mechanic myself and own this car. So far didn't have this problem yet, bought the car at 40,000 and now have 70,000. Don't the chains also stretch on these? If this happens, shouldn't you also replace the chain and tensioner?
can you help have same car and in the middle of this job i just want to know how to make sure the chain tensioner springs out and puts tension on the chain is there any special instructions i need to follow?
The complete way of doing the job is replacing the phasers, chain, guides, tensioner, and re-sealing the camshaft housing cover. It's about a 2800.00 job at an Indy like myself. BTW, the housing cover requires removal of the camshafts themselves to re-seal. It's basically the plate where the camshafts ride on. This plate communicates with the spark plug wells. It uses sealant, no gaskets. The sealant fails, and causes the spark plug wells to take on oil. Creating misfires.
@@LynxStarAuto dang I been trying to find out why I have slight misfires and spark plugs fixed it for about 5 miles . Then looks like oil on them. So I did the valve cover gasket now today I get long start and the dredded noise on start up. How hard of a job is to tackle? And how much for the special tools?
@@cashlessracing It's pretty much like doing the whole Cam Sprocket job + you have to take out the camshaft bolts and camshaft housing and that's it i guess.
Only use the Mercedes oem parts, or you will be doing it again. Mercedes updated the cam phasers. They have new part numbers. Aftermarket phasers will fail in 10-20k miles.
4.5 hours?! It took me from 10 in the morning to 10 at night. Thermostat seized in the cover. Tensioner had to be reset twice. Alternator was a PITA. Cam adjuster took time to align properly. All in all, s*** ****** *******. It was worth it.
Juan Serrano no dealer experience, however I’ve taken a few classes to learn their system, we also have a few subscriptions to work instructions for the European vehicles. You can find almost anything on the internet so I’m somewhat self taught
How long did it take you to do this job from start to finish? We have the first one at work and due to having to order the timing tool it feels like the job is taking way too long to finish.
Mehta brand would you recommend going with for the new phasers? The oem mercedes are over $800 each. Cardone brand on rockauto are about $400 ea and BBR on autohauz are $175. Any suggestions? Thanks!
It looks like you are confident and competent in this repair and my local mechanic says he is not. I'm pretty sure my 2009 CLK 350 needs this repair. It runs fine, but is throwing the right exhaust cam adjuster continuous retard code on cold start and the magnet and adjuster did not solve. How do I get into contact with your shop to schedule an appointment?
@@marcgreenmountain6062 I changed out camshaft position sensors, and both magnetic cam solenoid, have sprockets coming in. The tensioner I need is for the actual chain correct not the two for the sprockets?
I have a 2005 C230 Benz fixing a blown head gasket. I have done everything, but stuck at the cam cradle assembly. To remove the valve assembly, I need to remove the cradle assy, but the oil pump is a pain the ass. Is the oil pump in the back screwed into this cam cradle assy? Any info about the C230 will be appreciated. Thanks
Hello I brought my car to a shop with crank no start. They said it was the camshaft adjuster so they installed a new one along with a timing chain and coolant hose. Then the car still wouldn't start. They then said I have been engine valves. What do you think happened?
How many miles were on the car? I have a 2013 with 70k miles, no problems yet. What symptoms would I expect when the camshaft phasers go bad? Great video by the way. Keep them coming. My daughter has a 2005 c240 which I as able to bring back to life with all the repair videos but videos on my late model c250 are few and far between
Rattle noise at start up, vehicle will also crank longer when starting and the check engine light will be on. The code will come up as a camshaft position sensor.
Hi there just asking is there a special type of wrench you used in holding down the camshaft while you tighten the camshaft gear adjusters with a torque wrench? Thanks
hello. need to replace my fuel control module on 2012 s550.Do i need to reprogram the new fuel control module @ the dealers or its plug and play..thank you
What is the torque specs for the phasers, is it 90 or 130 nm? i see engines 271.8 and 271.9 and am thinking mine is 271.8 which is a 2013 benz c250, and should go with 90nm, is that true? also, is the spec on the tensioner 40 nm?
I need help, I’ve replaced my camshaft sensors, and camshaft adjuster magnets, but after about ten minutes of driving I still get ticking as if it’s a diesel, do I need to recalibrate the timing or what’s the deal?
then it was not because of the camshaft sensor and magnets sensor, it's the cam adjuster(s) that is faulty. One way to test it is to turn the crankshaft clockwise slowly, if you hear the knocking sound (slapping/jumping) at some point, then confirmed.
How can you tell which cam adjuster magnet sensor is Bank 1 when standing in front of the car? I had a scan done and it says to replace the Bank 1 side. Which is causing cylinder 3 misfire.
The Euro Mechanic It's a 4 cylinder turbo 1.8L engine. It has two adjuster magnetic solenoids in the front and I'm getting a code P0304 and P0303 to change the bank 1.
@@rodrigoguevara6941 there is only one bank on a 4 cylinder engine. p0304 is misfire #4 and p0303 is misfire #3, the order of the cylinder should be 1-2-3-4. Number one should be closest to the drive belts
The Euro Mechanic, I am currently looking at prices for a set of camshaft phasers and I noticed aftermarket cams are one-third of the price of genuine Mercedes cams. Do you think its really worth going with genuine Mercedes parts considering the genuine cams failed at only 73,000 miles? The brands I am considering are: bbr Automotive $430 per set, Cardone $800 per set, Mercedes $1,700-2,000 per set.
The Euro Mechanic is it possible to install them the wrong way? By that, I mean to install the intake cam on the exhaust and the exhaust on the intake side. Could that be done if the mechanic didn’t know what he was doing?
@@marcgreenmountain6062 how much would you charge on this same car to replace or align correctly the camshaft timing chain? My c250 has a p0340 code and it has power loss and a hard rattling startup
I have a 2012 C250W. Regular maintenance as scheduled by Mercedes dealership where I purchased the vehicle. No issues ever. Car has been taking longer to crank over the past week. No noise, no rattling, no loud sounds coming from anywhere. I was still able to drive it. My check engine light came on. 66K miles on vehicle, overdue for maintenance, I took it in to the dealership for maintenance and diagnosis. Codes a/t techs stating I need a timing chain repair, which costs $6800. I can't see how? No rattling or loud noises. The car takes a little longer to turn over, 3 seconds, compared to the 1 second it usually takes. I get regular maintenance and oil changes every 10K miles, a little over sometimes due to my work schedule. I'm just stuck at what I need to do. Don't want to put $7K into a vehicle that has been running perfectly fine for 6.5 years. Help? Suggestions?
I bought a used 2013 c250 with 48k miles now has 70k. Spark plugs are to be serviced at 60k (my mpg jumped to 35.6 cruising on a freeway trip after that😀) and the transmission at 70k. Note these c250 turbos have A89 low friction trannies, ATF IS BLUE! plugs my help with the hard starting.
Some good points but as a DIY you raise more questions than you answer. Your video does not allow me to complete this procedure without further instruction. For example what is the torque on the phasers? How does one know when this repair is needed? What is the typical mileage on these cars needing this repair. What exactly needs to be removed? the special tool? What’s it called? I know there are actuators and magnetic solenoids related to the phasers, what about those? What was the purpose of the blue paint marks. Sorry but this video is a thumbs down. I’ll have to keep searching.
That job looks expensive. Hell, the OEM parts alone cost a few months of car payments. Moral of the story, don't buy a Mercedes but lease instead. "Easy money boys. Easy money." Lol
I just had this job done on my C250 and I don’t know what my mechanic did wrong, but now I got bent valves and possibly other engine damage. The engine ran for about 30 minutes after installed the new Cams then seized. The mechanic claims the after market Cardone Cam-phaser are at fault. Could this be true anybody?
they prob didnt replace the timing chain tensioner and the chain became loose. and allowed the timing to jump which caused to the valves and pistions to contact. which results in bent valves
The Euro Mechanic I ordered the tensioner and personally gave it to him along with the two Cardone Cam-phasers. He blames the after market phasers, but I have my doubts because he wasn’t even gonna change the tensioner if it wasn’t for me that told him to do it. He said he only needed the phasers, but I brought him the tensioner anyway. What a mess🤦🏻♂️
Great video. Is this a petrol C Class? The engine looks identical to my 1.8 petrol SE. Just had noise coming from engine - Been at Mercedes all week, they said it needs camshaft tensioner. 5 hours quoted!
Was the timing cover a pain to remove for you? I’ve removed all of the bolts in the front. But it doesn’t want to budge. Almost feels like I’m going to break it.
