I did a short video showing how you can replace a thermostat on a VW 2.0 TSI engine without removing the water pump or intake manifold. It is still a little putzy of a project but way easier than removing the intake manifold. I hope this helps someone. I love learning tips on youtube.

Did you ever use the o ring that came with the thermostat? I got a new housing and a thermostat but the housing already came with a seal (o ring) installed but it’s a bit smaller and thicker so don’t know If I would need 2.

Did you ever replace your thermostat? I got the same issue as you. My car came from Florida last year so I think the thermostat is original because they don’t use there heat as much as we do in ny
@thelitos07

@@tonybristol9132 well thankfully my heat works just fine still. Good luck to you up there, I can't imagine not having heat in NY. Short answer, I have not changed mine yet. I gave an attempt to this guide but I found that I may just need to pull the whole water pump out to get the thermostat. I had to remove all bolts from water pump to get some wiggle room, but still gave me a hard time. You may have better luck

@@thelitos07 yeah, it can still be a tight spot. If you change the water pump, replace all the gaskets. I reused the transmission cooler pipe gasket and it later developed a leak (video on that coming).

It would not fit. I tried numerous different universal fittings but they were all too tight. I even jt tried a long fallen wrench. But you found something that fits, throw it up on the comments. It would be great to not even have to loosten the water pump.

Way too many dealers just throw up their hands and say it's a head gasket when the car overheats. My dad's Toyota had overheating issues and the dealer instantly said "head gasket" when in reality the coolant was very low because we knocked a hose loose while doing the alternator. Pretty crazy.

@@thelitos07 Exactly! Overheating is not the ONLY symptom of a bad head gasket. Thank goodness that I've found an independent european car shop that seems to know what they're doing for 1/2 the dealer cost!

The thermostat that I used fit correctly. It is a little tricky getting it in so it slides in all the way. If not, the housing will not seal correctly. I hope you get it figured out!

Question I have the same car I just started noticing the coolant light flashing yesterday. I put more coolant in and I noticed today the coolant leak in front of car when I look under hood I see it's wet on the front middle bottom of the plastic. What can that be
@bryanfagerstrom4664
@bryanfagerstrom4664 2 года назад
That sounds like the same area as the water pump. It could be the water pump gasket or the transmission cooler pipe which also went bad on mine. I will be posting the video from that soon as well. That was an easier fix because it was more accessible.

My temp light came for the first time since owning the car and when I pulled over the liquid inside the reservoir was boiling like hot water on the stove, any ideas what could be causing it? The light did go away after leaving the car off for a few hours, but after a 14 minute drive the liquid was still boiling with bubbles and all.
@bryanfagerstrom4664
@bryanfagerstrom4664 2 года назад
Check the temperature of your radiator. If its cold, than it is more than likely a bad thermostat.
@AltruisticWarrior

Need to test the pressure of the coolant. Could unfortunately also be the intake/head venting gas into the coolant passages.

Hello Bryan, sorry for bad English, but I will try to explain. Is it possible to change fan turn on temp? Default behavior - turn on fan on about 105c temp. I want to change this value to 95c temp.
@bryanfagerstrom4664

The fan is controlled by the computer, I think you would need a computer to hook up to reprogram the engine management system.

@bryanfagerstrom4664
@bryanfagerstrom4664 2 года назад
I would look underneath on the front side of the engine to see if there is evidence of a leak. A failed head gasket will also consume coolant.

@SirManlyPowers
@SirManlyPowers 2 года назад
The longer end (shaft) of the thermostat goes into the outside housing. Be careful: both shaft ends of the thermostat have a hole that they must fit into. It's quite easy to mis-install the thermostat and still be able to bolt down the cover.
