I have a 2012 2WD. I do agree the ride is great, could use at least an extra gear. The gear shifter is a little wobbly but the location is great since it gives you the huge storage area. The 3rd row has adult sized headroom and unlike many others you can slide the 2nd row fore and aft. The 3rd row seat bottoms could use more cushioning. Getting 20-21 MPG combined is pretty easy, just stay right under 80 on the freeways and you will be running 4 cylinders.
Two basic principles to remember: 1. Form follows function (remember the VW microbus?), and classic style evolves (how about the 911?). 2. Simpler is better. After looking at all the trendy yuppie mobiles out there, we came back to this classic, well-evolved vehicle. Great review.
@Jonathan McCully I am not sure of the 2013 Accord, but I had a 2006 Accord and now I own a 2014 Pilot Touring. Both are extremely smooth and reliable. The Pilot is much more comfortable than the Accord. The Pilot is heavy and hugs the road like anything. Most bumps and rough patches are not even felt. The Accord is much lighter and you can feel that on Highway speeds as well on bumps. The Accord of course has better gas mileage than the Pilot Good luck with your purchase
I appreciate Honda for sticking with the boxy look of the Pilot. CUV/SUV's from other manufacturers look like mini vans. Great review Craig. Really entertaining. You make it look effortless.
I love our 2012 EX-L. i love the fact that it drives so honestly and feels small behind the wheel. lots of the other cars have electronic power steering, my ford touch crap freeezing, this is hydraulic, offers nav when you want it and is a really solid car. its a great buy.

Wow, the rear glass opens independently of the hatch? Brilliant.... the Explorer / Expedition had that feature 15+ yrs ago. The Pilot is great, but c'mon man......
needs more gears, but no complaints as to how it functions... jeez, cheaper to make less gears and cheaper to maintain. if it performs great, why need more?
It is interesting how this gentleman uses the terms "pretty wide aisle for third row access" when in reality it is one of the least wide access in the segment. 2. He leaves out the main competing vehicles - Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia - which provide more interior space, and sell more than the Pilot. He definitely throws in few nuggets of things that are not great but covers them up with other goodies that pilot has to offer. All and all - perfect marketing pitch......
