Junior UCF quarterback and American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year Blake Bortles leads the UCF Knights to a 11-1 record and a Fiesta Bowl appearance in the 2013 regular season.
Not much of a highlight reel. A lot of dump-offs, alot of missed tackles, alot of YAC. This is more of a WR highlight film. Don't know if he is starting caliber.
As a wide receiver, I have to disagree with some of you guys comments about how he throws awkward passes to his receivers. The truth is he is i throwing the ball to were he knows is his and receivers only can make the catch. The worst thing for a receiver is a quarterback who over throws him. What I see from Blake Bortles, is tremendous poise in the pocket and spectacular accuracy, despite what some of you may say; and those qualities along will help him progress and succeed in the NFL.
also his numbers and highlights are almost all because of poor competition and receivers making great catches and breaking off short passes for touchdowns, I don't know who draws up plays for them but good job writing plays that don't require him to read a defense, but that won't work in the nfl
most of these highlight are short passes that the wr made something out of nothing or a great catch.. the wide receivers made him look better weren't great throw. plus didn't play good teams. just think he's not better than manziel or bridgewater and maybe not better than tajh boyd not saying he wont be a good QB but he's raw and a project
***** Why the fuck did you have to call me retarded? Think about who you may be talking to on the other end. You have no idea what someone else's life might be like or what they might be going through. Treat people with kindness. Just because you're behind your computer screen and not face to face doesn't mean you shouldn't treat other people with respect. Would you say that to someone out in public face to face? No. You wouldn't. Grow up.
***** And what do you mean take my own advice? I didn't treat you disrespectfully. I didn't insult you. I told you to grow up. The reason I said that is because when you grow up, you respect people more because you understand the importance of it.
***** & you're a punk bitch. Stop trying to act like you have any better an idea of what draft day is going to look like than the next guy, and get a life. If you're older than him then I feel sorry for you, age hasn't taught you anything, usually a sign of ignorance and stupidity.
***** I'm 28. How old are you? If you're older than me, then that's pretty sad, because you're a prime example of how shitty some people can treat others.
everyone always says about these dang quarterbacks "OMG HE'S THE BEST, SEE A BRIGHT FUTURE IN THIS YOUNG MAN" The only "Sure Thing" I see in this draft is Teddy Bridgewater, Matthews, K macks, and Anthony Barr
Despite what all you dudes say I like Blake Bortles and I wish him the best. But I've been around football too long and these are highlights and I still see some weaknesses in his game but I still think this kid could be stud in the NFL. Not a star but a stud in his own right. He won't be a perennial Pro Bowler, he will not be in the Hall of Fame someday, I just think he'll be an efficient and hard working game manager who will need the right OC, a damn good left and right guard, and running backs who can be his secondary protectors and who can actually block. He is not a first-read passer, he likes to scan defenses for what seems like hours for the right and open receiver; in the NFL he will get his ass kicked if he does that even with a Joe Thomas, Michael Roos (in his heyday), or Jake Long blocking for him at LT. Like I said, I wish him the best and I hope he does well. But he needs work as all underclass or senior college quarterbacks do. Give the kid a chance he might surprise you.
I see a lot of accurate passes, and he looks off the secondary very well. Great awareness as well. I hate Ben Roethlisberger,...But, Blake reminds me of him. My beloved Browns should definitely take this guy at #4!
Sure, he hasn't played against the best college teams, but that doesn't matter to scouts and GM's. They are focused on your skill set and what you can bring to the team. Bortles has an awesome skill set, a rocket arm, and shifty scrambling when he needs to. If the Jag's drafted this guy, he would automatically be better than Blaine Gabbert because he doesn't get scared in the pocket.
at any rate not knowing him ... watching preseason how did he not go #1. clowns are dime a dozen . give me some face paint.. lmao that would be kinda scary rushes by a bunch of clowns. he seems to have the IT factor . others before keep saying big ben... i has a felling he may end up an elway
Regardless of the fact that he plays in a weaker division, Bortles stands very strong in the pocket and can elude the pass rush and still deliver the throw downfield..he might not be worth a number 1 overall pick but I believe he will be the most nfl ready of all the qbs in this draft.
as a vikings fan i would cry if we draft this kid, i guarantee he's a bust if he goes in round one, my biggest observation from his highlight video's is that he doesn't go through progressions at all, he stares down his receivers and doesn't look past his first read. maybe if he get's put behind a good veteran who is willing to teach him and has a good qb coach he could eventually develop into a good quarterback but he is definitely not ready to start
Nothing special, All his receivers have at least 2 yards of separation. No tight windows to throw to and the level of competition compared to someone like Johnny Manziel in the SEC is a huge factor in determining the right QB
Steelers.... draft #11 please.... oh my fucking god he is amazing. I came here to see if the jags would be good but i think these receivers are just BEAST
I like him a lot hes got great potential, the only thing I dont trust is the competition he went up against, I mean whose in the American conference besides Louisville.
I gotta agree w/ alot of you. I watched this reel twice. It's decent, but I concluded A) His wrs were wide open on at least 75% of these plays and B) They picked up a ton of YAC. Plus I hear he didn't have any pro-style plays in his playbook FWIW. He might be alright, but I'd much rather have Johnny or Teddy.
#9 and #11 definitely make Bortles look amazing so I wonder how Cecil Shorts, Allen Robinson, Marquise Lee and Mercedes Lewis will make him look. Mike Brown sucks but Ace Sanders has promise....When Toby Gerhart is your main horse in coming out of the stable and a former QB is your 2nd or 3rd string RB you may have issues somewhere down the line.
Liked how on at least 4 of these plays, BB looked off his primary and hit the secondary. Did not see Manziel do this at all. If Manziel's primary isn't open, he pulls it down and runs. BB also looks durable at 230. Down side is that he doesn't seem to be quite as accurate. Nonetheless, Browns should get this guy. Hopefully the Raiders will win their last game and the Browns can pick ahead of them. Won't help if Texans pick him up.
Blake Bortles is a product of a stat/hype train, and should only be considered a project at the next level. He did really well in college, but how do we know that will carry over to the NFL? Those throws won't do him any good in the NFL. Scouts are REALLY overlooking his throwing mechanics. What's worse is that you won't be able to find out what kind of player you're getting until you throw him in with the wolves(NFL defenses). How does he react to a closing pocket? Can he throw in tight spaces when required? Can he go thru his progressions? Can he read defensive coverages? None of these questions can be answered from this level of competition. Almost all of these passes were thrown to open guys, or guys who readjusted their routes to catch the ball.
I'm not trying to bash or hate on Bortles, but I really think he has very limited upside, he would not be a safe pick for the Texans, I'm a Manziel fan and I don't even know if he would be a safe pick. I think that they need to play it safe and Get either J.C, Bridgewater, or Robinson. Bortles= Major risk with little upside, Manziel = Major risk with a possibility of it paying off big, Bridgewater = Safe bet with a consistent QB
Blake is going #1, just wait and see. There are way too much delusional Blake haters on here that haven't even seen him play. Dude brought UCF to a Fiesta Bowl win against Baylor, who came very close to compete in the National Championship. People need to stop hating and give props. And btw, Manziel is entertaining, but wayyyy overrated...
Will probably go #1 Bortles fits the prototype better than Manziel between bridgewater , manziel and Bortles. Bortles I think is the best suited to the pro game. from hearing him speak he appears to be very leveled headed kid. It would be ideal for Bridgewater and Manziel to go to a team has a good core of veteran who can support a young quaterback. The trend of playing rookie QB's has increased the pressures on players and coaches alike.
I want to see him make tough throws into tight coverage.....any QB can make the throws displayed in this video. Good video, and at least he can find open receivers, but I wan't to see him throw someone open.
He needs to go to a team that can provide the same type of structure that Pittsburgh and Baltimore provided Roethlisberger and Flacco respectively. If he was to go to a situation similar to the ones that Gabbert had in Jacksonville and Locker had in Tennessee he will likely be unable to recover. Or even the situation Andrew Luck had in Indy for that matter. Bottom line I don't believe he's the type of transcendent prospect that will have success regardless of where he ends up. On the other hand he's certainly not the type to be a guaranteed bust.
I dont see him being the first pick but in this video he clearly is a good qb. Everyone saying this is a wr. video and he dont have mechanics ti be in the nfl. If yall looked at manziel video before this one that would make since. His has magic in that this dosent have. But as a NFL qb I think he has it. Yes his wr. are very good, but thats there job to get open not to sit there and let the qb get them open. Next he dosent go crazy he knows how to sit in the pocket and let things develop around him like a NFL qb back in the day. I myself is an SEC fan and i dont think hes played a caliber defense even close to NFL but once he gets there he will have a better line wr. and backs. I think with a little nfl type qb coach this guy can be great. First pick maybe not but 1st round def.
I like Bridgewater more than this guy. To me he just doesn't wow me and I ended up wondering who #11 was after watching this. Seems like his receivers definitely help pad his stats with YAC
I just hope the Vikings don't pick him. He doesn't seem to have the arm strength and those floaters are not going to work against NFL defenses. He is pretty much Ponder 2.0. I would pass.
This guy just doesn't look like an early 1st round pick to me. I'd say his upside is comparable to good Matt Shaub, and his downside is bad Christian Ponder.
I hope he is somehow still there when the Cowboys get their turn at the podium. This guy looks like the real deal to me. He looks the part of a franchise QB. Romo is about done because of health and age. Would love to move on with this guy.
guy needs a mentour just like every rookie but i look and see a more athletic brett farve. he will go in the first prob but if he could land in a spot where he can sit and learn he could be dangerous. if im the pats i mighy be willing to take this kid early and let him learn behind brady if they aint sold on mallot. or arizona would be a better fit derek car might be the rout arizona takes latter on
This kid has good touch on the ball and great accuracy. I would like to see him go to the Vikes. Just would want to see him check through his reads more.
he wont get away with some of the plays he made in the ncaa (like Johnny Manziel) when he gets to the nfl but he can throw pretty good on the run and his arm is ok
i don't like his throwing motion looks a little odd. also he throws the ball to hard needs to learn how to put that touch on it. Just needs a little time to grow.
Nothing happened to Manziel. People just moved on to the next big thing. Manziel was just as studly in 2013 as he was in 2012 and will go in the first round.
his receivers are doing all the work his release is eh & this is weak competition. take Manziel Texans or you regret it I would say Clowney but yah need a qb and I wouldn't risk it on the other rounds not everybody going to find a Brady, Wilson or Foles or else everybody would pick random qbs in other rounds.
Dustin8569 noooooooo Tebow was a college QB. and plus you can't write nobody future in stone besides I didn't say bortles is a bust I just think manziel is more the style now Cleveland is doing a seattle they got a defense on the rise they got ben tate and heavily underated Terrance West who I think gonna be a cross between Marshawn Lynch & Alfred Morris big stong back with speed and cut ability and they o-line is underappreciated and they just got another steal in bitiono for that o-line. the only thing that might hurt manziel is the lack of Gordon unless snead or shaw breakout but. bortles still has is in a pickle he only has marquise lee that's it and he gotta face Luck & Watt/CLowney twice that's easier then facing a struggling decline ravens defense and aging extremely old members of the dinosaur steelers who 80% of the defense will be gone in 3 yrs including big ben.
Can we all just realize this guy has only been starting for 2 years! How is he even considered a first round pick? He just does a simple flick pass to whichever receiver is open, most games he flops the first half then has to make a comeback to standoff his stats. Nothing against Bortles, I would go as far as saying Aj McCarron is better than him.
John Chaney Check the stats asshat, Bortles didnt beat anybody, Louisville defense just gave in after we were pounding UCF 28-7. I guess Aj McCarron is better than Johnny Manziel because Alabama beat A&M this year. Bortles is just a medicore QB who runs the same pattern everytime, he is not first round talent.
nhobbs5597 I think he is regarded so highly because of his upside and potential. I do definitely see huge upside in him and he can be really good, he just needs to sit behind an elite qb for a few years, like sitting behind brees or brady before they retire. I personally think bridgewater is the best qb available
John Lowe No Teddy Bridgewater will begin immediately wherever he goes, he shows every thing of an elite quarterback and was the no.1 pick for the longest time until people started throwing in Johnny Manziel and Blake Bortles into the mix.
