Rich, I'm one of the non-pilot viewers (subscriber) that you mentioned and watch all of your videos. It's my Saturday morning routine. I have always been interested and fascinated in aviation but have never taken steps to pursue a license for various reasons. I have many friends and family members who do fly which is probably as close as I'll get. Thanks for the excellent videos and content.
Same here, Rich. Into my forties, and looking at getting my RPL. Only reason I didn't start sooner is being short-statured and requiring pedal extensions for the rudders. Looking at flight schools in Australia that help people with disability to fly. Thanks for your channel, Rich!
Yeah, you got it. I'm a big fan and I especially like it when you do the breakfast or lunch stops. Maybe consider featuring more of the video inside the retaurant for a more rounded experience for us viewers.
Fullerton Municipal had a Flight Service station in 1972 when I was working on my private. I remember going there for weather briefs and sometimes to just hang out. Lots of history back then but I know I'm a better pilot for having learned to safely operate out of that field. Thanks Rich! Another well produced video!
Thank you. I got to visit a few FSS’s for wx early in my flying days. I think ABQ was the last one I got a ex brief from in person. Thanks for watching!
I agree with everything you said Rich, not only about the plane but being older 50 plus, learning to fly and using a 182 to do so. I still have a ways to go but really enjoying 5MC and appreciating everything that my 2008 T182T has to offer. Great airplanes...
This is a great follow up to the A36 video you put out the other day. Two really great family haulers. Your comments about Cessna not producing much, was spot on. Cessna not spitting out aircraft like they use to isn’t a bad thing in my mind, we are lucky to live in a time where there are a whole lot of great options in the single piston market. Cessna scaling back production just makes sense.
I do wish there was more demand for airplanes in this class to be a catalyst for higher production, but based on current demand, I agree. Thanks for the message!
@@FlyingwithRich You nailed it in the video, we need to get more people flying. More flyers typically equals more owners. I think a lot of people are overwhelmed by the idea of getting a PPL so they never try which is really unfortunate. There is a whole section of society they are missing out on. I’d like to see more videos like this from you, highlighting the ability to take a short hop and grab a bite to eat. Sort of the RU-vid version of the $100 hamburger.
The last flight I did with my Dad was in a C172 from Long Beach into Fullerton airport probably in the late 80's. But another great video. I really enjoy this channel. It's one of the top aviation channels I look forward to watching. Thank You!
Nice treat. Fullerton Airport was the home airport for my Dad and his other pilot buddies. I was working at Ford Electronics (commonwealth & dale) back in the 80s and a self-described “Hangar rat”. I’d catch rides with many pilots who just wanted some company and out for a fun flight. Now, in my early 60s, I enjoy your channel and videos like this one which brings back those memories. Thanks. PS. Avionics sure have come a long way since then.
Thanks for the message - it seems airplanes and airports always imprint memories whether you are a pilot or not! Avionics are a different world today for sure!
Another awesome video Rich! Always great footage from Martius! I'm planning to do a discovery flight in January at 55yrs, should of years ago but hey...On a basic GeoFS Sim with keyboard and mouse only, finally made a good landing in a C152 after 10hrs on Sim. Must thank you guys as I picked up heaps of knowledge from your landing approaches in the videos. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2024! Cheers from Australia 🛩️🎄🌅🏄🤙
Rich, always enjoy watching your videos. And, I respect your vast knowledge of GA aircraft and experience in so many. Keep up the great work. This air sled is a nice one! I got hungry just listening to you describe the food. Grace & Peace to you, Chuck (NE Florida). : +)
Doing my training at 47yrs old in a 182Q. Finished with all my requirements and Prepping for my checkride now.Planning to buy one in the next few months. I think the 182 platform will serve me well for awhile. Looking forward to visiting many new places and neat restaurants like Wings cafe soon…enjoy the videos!
Interested in flying! Enjoy your videos, relaxed, mature personality, good Instructor Pilot attitude!! Keep making videos, I learn something on every video!! Thanks!!
Someday I hope to upgrade my 1967 Cherokee 180 a T182T. Two doors, high wing, great useful load, and nice performance. I have a couple hundred hours in older model 182s (flying skydivers). You are right about an airplane opening up a new world. I call my Cherokee my magic carpet.
My desire to fly a GA aircraft ranks right up there with having a root canal BUT I would not miss one of videos. They are interesting, informative and educational. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
Rich a nice "Cafe" run with that plane might be to Big Bear.... and that radio tower near Fullerton 🤔... I asked them to remove it 40 years ago , ...OH Well. Thanks again for the ride along.
Always enjoy your videos Rich. I am a Skylane driver (182N), an earlier model and have been to Wings Cafe often. Great little spot. You might want to give Hemet (KHMT) a try as they have a nice little restaurant you taxi up to with good food as well.
I was one of those that got started later. Always money and time got in the way. My wife actually was the one who told me to go do it because she didn't want to live with me when I was old and couldn't. I was 47 when I got my PPL and fly out of Fullerton Smoke Eagles Flying Club. Time still gets in the way so I don't go as often as I'd like, but keep hoping to change that. By the way, Wings Cafe is awesome for breakfast and lunch. Food and service is always great. Thanks Rich. I like the restaurant review added.
The 182T is awesome all the way around. It’s the Honda Accord of small airplanes. It’s not the fastest or highest-performing in its class, but it does everything so well and is so reliable. I’m on the waiting list for the new 182T that Cessna just introduced.
I’m 51 and started watching GA videos on RU-vid during the early pandemic just out of boredom. Your stuff is great because the content is diverse. How do you know how to fly that many planes? Is it just like jumping from a Ford to a Chevy? I would love to learn about learning how to fly. I can’t see myself buying a plane but at 51 still want to learn.
Watch all your videos Rich. C180 pilot in the PNW and look to get down your way this summer for Catalina visit. Keep up the great content and restaurant reviews.
I don’t think too complex. Insurance will be significantly more expensive. Get a good instructor with experience, and don’t be in a hurry and I think not an issue, but higher performance more complex airplanes will have impact on your training so important not to forget that.
Don't know how you do it Rich; discussing all that info while aviating, navigating and communicating in busy terminal areas, and often in more complex aircraft: Awesome. Just missed you perfomance info on this one... Is the T's performance similar to the naturally aspirated 182's below 10 000? As always, thanks for taking the time to share.
Great hearing you talk about getting a PPL later in life. Got mine recently at 52. The only downside is the cost. I have learned and should have realized before, that its a "rich man's" hobby to some extent. Sure, you can find a cheaper old aircraft, but throw in storage, maintenance/annuals and insurance. Cheap, it is not.
Learned to fly out of Fullerton back in 86 from AFI which I understand they are no mas. Hopefully will start flying again after all this time enjoy watching your videos right now looking for a partner to go in on a Cirrus SR22T wish me luck.
Me too! I noticed AFI looked closed down - sad. It was a pleasure to know Bill Griggs (both of them). I’ll never forget delivering a new 172S to Bill Sr. and how excited he was at probably 75 or 80 to be flying around the pattern in a 172! I hope I’m the same way!
Hi, First, I must outline that I enjoy watching your video, all your videos. Informative and inspiring! My question is: since a brand new (2023) 182T will cost little more than 700K $ or 770K $ as you mentioned, isn’t this 2013 aircraft quite expensive at 610K? Ok for very low AFTT but a 10 years (almost 12) motor! I don’t know at what price this aircraft was paid and if it is significative!
Thanks for the message. It sold at a price very close to asking price so in my opinion that’s the market. We can come up with all kinds of ways to value or de-value airplanes but the real value is what someone will pay and the other will sell. You can’t get a new T182T for a while so that drives used prices up too.
Rich the Turbo 182 T prices are still going strong on these models but unfortunately out west is where they dominate in higher elevation Airports and getting over high terrain
I’ve done dozens of practice VOR approaches to KFUL in everything from C182s, Mooney M20Js and Ks, Bonanzas, and the Saratoga to the C441 but I’ve never landed there.
I also am a non pilot viewer. My dad was a pilot and owned a Cherokee 180,loved flying with him as a kid. Now 50 years later I regret not getting my license.
Love watching your vids. I totally agree with you on getting your license later in life, I finished mine a year ago and I'm working on my IFR rating now. Can't wait to be able to afford my own plane someday, I'd trust you in a heartbeat with that purchase. I'm up in Northern Nevada and would love something to use around the west coast. Any tips on buying your first plane for a new IFR low-time pilot to get experience but be safe while flying around our mountains? Thanks
That’s great! Lots of good options on aircraft. I think the pre- 1986 182s are a good value, great utility and a lot of upgrade options. Thanks for watching!
Would it be possible to talk about the type of missions the owner(s) have/had for their aircraft(s). How far they usually travel, is it just them flying, 2-4 people with them, business or family/pleasure, owner flown or owner not flown. I know you said this owner got his PPL and instrument in this one then got 525 type I believe. Would like to know how they were using the 182 before the jet and what were some reasons for the upgrade to the jet? Thanks!
Family business owned aircraft in the past - strictly business use. Purchased a 525 4 years ago and then the 182 for Matt to train in, build some time. I fly with them and CEO also an experienced pilot, and Matt will crew it as well. They use the Citation strictly for business travel.
So this is a Great plane and all, but the engine does not turn 2,700 RPMs, and thus would you not get 300 hp, or maybe this engine just makes 285 hp , so what can we do to get full RPM and full power?
I think you have to put in a different variant of the Lycoming 540 to get 260HP (not sure available for turbo) at 2700 RPM. Older 182s can get upgrades to the Continental 550 for 300HP which I really like. We’re doing one now so will have some videos coming on it soon.
I have always wanted to get a PPL. Not sure I can pass the color vision. Though I can differentiate colors I was told I am color deficient. I struggle with the Ishihara test though my optometrist tells me I pass. I am not sure if the requirements for PPL are more stringent.
If the airlines don’t take me because of my age, I’m still going to stay in aviation. I’m going to put in an application with OCR! I’ll see you at age 54 with my 1500TT and CFII! Peace!
Always wondered how the food was at the airport restaurants you’ve been to, now I know. Nice 182, I bet that was a Chinese surveillance balloon checking it out. 😂
RPM controversy gets some people excited! Peppers,Onions, Mushrooms, Jalapeño, Avocado, some kind of meat - normally sausage for me, and some spicy salsa.
Well over half a million for a nice 182, and what, 1.5 million for a new Baron? Unless you're a corporation, who can do this?? And you haven't even reached turbine status with either........
Great airport, however the flight schools at KFUL are not so great. To Bad the old flight school that was good closed down. Now they have two flight schools that are an absolute joke.
I had a 2004 182T, first year with G1000. NOTHING has changed.....except the price has doubled. No improvements, sadly. Overall, it is a great platform but the value is questionable. At least for me.
My stepdad had a buddy named Lee Crum who owned a gun shop in socal ( accuracy gunshop) and had a 170 based at Fullerton...he used to fly to AK for hunting and fishing trips. When I was learning to fly out of Torrance in 84 my instructor would have me drop into Meadowlark for some short field practice and a cheeseburger basket at the Cafe and a chat with Art Nerio...I feel fortunate to have been able to experience that before it closed
Being mainly a Cessna pilot, i would love to own a 182T with G1000. It has enough extras for me to be content with the way it is. BTW, I like the restaurant review at the end even if your lapel mics were swapped as far as left and right goes (camera facing you) LOL 🙂
