Just a quick video on a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 that had an intermittent starting problem. When it was brought to me, and I first looked at it, it started for me several times in a row without any problems at all.
The owner said a lot of times it would take 4-5 tries, and sometimes he would just wait a few minutes and try it again and it would work. The battery tested fine and the connections were all solid and free of corrosion. He said that you could hear a click when attempting to start the engine, so the starter relay and solenoid were working, but the brushes in the starter motor were probably just worn out or a bit gummed up. He said that once he tried tapping on the body of the starter a few times and did finally get it to start, but it was still giving him problems and wouldn't start every time so he decided to have me change it out rather than risk getting stranded somewhere.
The starter used in the video was purchased locally at O'reilly Auto Parts.
Tools needed:
10mm socket and/or wrench to disconnect the battery and to remove the starter heat shield bolt
13mm or 1/2" sockets and/or wrenches for the main starter terminal and for the starter bolts
A socket extension will help to reach the bolts on the starter.
T-15 Torx bit if you plan on removing the inner fender liner like I did.
A Hook or pick tool is helpful for the connector on the signal wire.
The signal wire connector is a bad design and is problematic on this vehicle. Partially because of the non-intuitive design, but also because of the proximity to the exhaust that causes the plastic to become extremely brittle.
The little plastic sleeve covered with heat shield tape is supposed to protect the plastic connector, but it is an afterthought or a reaction to the problem of the heat getting to that connector. It doesn't work as well as it was designed to as even the plastic tube like shield also broke from the heat.
I recommend buying the replacement signal wire pigtail and plan on changing it when doing this and crimping it on. Or you can also just take out the center part of the old connector (on the vehicle) by prying it out with a small flathead screwdriver and pulling it apart and then snapping the connector end on from the new pigtail. You can do this on the truck, remove the wire from the broken connector and then putting a new connector on without having to splice the wire and use a butt connector crimped in place.
The torque spec that I found online for the starter bolts is 33 ft. lbs.
Thanks for watching!

Good sir, you earned a like from me! Having watched this video BEFORE I attempted the red tab slide out, I ofc broke mine, picked up another from the dealer and had him show me the correct connect method … he broke it too!

I don’t know if this matters, but loosen the right bolt all the way (in the camera angle) first before loosening the left bolt. For some reason, I think it just has to do with the weight balance of the starter… but pulling the right bolt out last seems more difficult than removing the left one first. It just hangs weird and the threads catch everything on the way out.

The red tab is a secondary lock to prevent the connection from becoming undone. Not critical for the repair, but ensures the connection will stay secure.

Just broke that clip and half of the connector housing. It's just terrible how they make these things so cheap and flimsy

My red tab broke and the wire won’t stay connected to the starter. If I get a red tab will it resolve this issue

I just put a new one in my 2014 Sierra, Duralast Gold, my question is should the new one make any sort of grinding noise when starting the truck? Maybe it needs to break in?
