An in-depth video account of my 2014 summit of K2 to raise awareness and research funds for Alzheimer's Disease. I, Alan Arnette, became the oldest American at age 58 and the 18th American to summit K2. We summited on my birthday, July 27, 2014.
The video starts with our arrival in Islamabad, then the journey via planes, and FJ Cruiser's to the "end of the road" at Askole where the 80-mile trek to K2 Base Camp begins. Hiking over the Baltoro Glacier is an adventure in its own right.
Once at Base Camp, we visit the Gilky Memorial to remember those who have died in these mountains. The climb on K2 begins at Advance Base Camp with a steep 1,000-meter (3,000 ft) climb to Camp 1. After acclimatization rotations as high as C2, the summit push begins near the end of July.

Not sure if anyone else has commented on this already, but what touched me the most is how you showed respect to the sherpas by putting their names first at 27:46. Thank you for this.

Yes, I agree. The climbers have to climb, but the sherpas carry the food, set up the gear, everything, just so the climbers can climb. I wonder if anyone counts how many times the Sherpas summit.

The most inspiring K2 summit expedition was done by four Catalans in 2004. They went up the Magic Line; climbed successfully only once before. They had no Sherpas help! The four men established their own routes, safety lines & advanced camps. They went up & down dozens of times to build & stock up camps 1, 2, 3, 4. None used oxygen. Four men doing everything from base camp. Only 1 of the 4, Jordi Corominas, summitted K2 at night, by himself. He would then descend down the other side of mountain, via Bottleneck & Abruzzi ridge. Alone, at night, without existing safety ropes, or oxygen. He made it back! One climber (Matta) succumbed to Peritonitis after returning to base camp. Here is there amazing & tragic climb. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BMxkv_3GcBc.html

Not only that, McDonnell would climb & free the three men who were entangled in their ropes, hanging off the mountain. (2 Koreans & a Sherpa). Minutes after freeing them, an ice avalanche took McDonnell. Sadly, the three men he freed, plus another Sherpa, would get hit by a subsequent ice fall. All four would perish!

Thanks to folks like you, Alan, I can see some of the most amazing feats mankind can accomplish from the comfort of my own bed. The son of my cello teacher Galen Rowell attempted the K2 climb. He spent a week on a ridge above 20,000 ft in a blizzard. He didn’t make it to the top but he didn’t lose his life on the mountain. Galen Rowell took pictures of my hand position on the cello and bow that is in his mother’s book “Prelude to String Playing.” Galen Rowell lost his life in a plane crash.

Much respect Alan. My grandmother recently passed away due to alzheimers. Thank you for bringing attention to this sad disease. Climb on brother. Much love from Oklahoma.

Amazing video; also, such a respectful person. Kudos to giving honour to the Sherpas by naming them first in the list of summiters at 27:46 . Respect from the UK to you, Sir.

Kudos to you sir for giving recognition & thanks to the Sherpas who went up with you and your team. Far too often, they are marginalized and treated no different than the tools & equipment used to make the summit. Cheers!

@@AlanArnetteClimbs Awesome! If I may, how old were you when you made the summit in this video? Incredible feat. I’m 44 & in the process of building up my skills etc for a potential crack at Denali in 2025, don’t know if I’ll run out of time before I can take a crack at a mountain like K2. Well done!

58, I’m the oldest American to summit K2. Didn’t know that at the time but still hold that record. Crazy. Glad to help you on your quest through www.summitcoach.org. Set up a free call.
