In this video I test ride and give my opinions on the new 2014 Suzuki V-Strom DL1000.
Suzuki have made a number of radical improvements and changes to this machine which before now had remained basically unchanged since it's inception.

Great review MrAus!!! sad to hear about abs not being able to turn off I would like to take that beast off-road... hopefully they make that a on or off option on later models and this is for sure going to be my next bike after hearing the review and first thoughts!

Thanks man. Yeah it seems like such a simple omission to me. I don't think it would have been too much more difficult to have included the ability to turn the ABS off. Maybe I am missing something? Hopefully they will add it with the next upgrade. Cool, I look forward to hopefully seeing you on the Strom!

Thanks mate, it was a lot of fun. The KTM Super Duke was amazing as well, but this is more my style. :-)

Good review. Nice they have included a few things that a lot of people want, like a gear indicator and especially the 12volt outlet. The engine whine sounded ok - a but like 2/3 of a Triple R whine, lol!!

Thanks mate. Yeah, straight out of the box there are a few more options that the older models just don't have. But very few V-Strom owners would keep the bike stock standard, most would be adding a few accessories straight away. The whine was nowhere near as bad as one journo said it was! But then other reviews I read did not even mention it at all.

Thanks. Yeah, they are very different from the previous model. I didn't like the styling when I first saw photos about a year ago, but it has definitely grown on me now to the point where I prefer it over the old model.

Thanks! Yes, I wish I had the funds to go and get one now as well. I might see what the price is in a year or so, some second hand ones with all the accessories I want might even start appearing on the market by then as well.

great review buddy!! sounds like you enjoyed the extra power.. I wonder what the testing was like in the wind tunnel.. I have tried the DL650 windscreen in all positions and it doesn't seem to make much difference either..

Thanks man. Yeah, I didn't notice much difference on my 650 when I changed it and it is a lot more work than this one. The difference on this was only slight, but it might make a bigger difference after hours of riding.

Good stuff, It would be nice to test ride some bikes like what they did there here, 1000cc's and over rock!!! I would like to try the GSX1250s.

Cheers mate, yeah it was an awesome day. We are very lucky to have a large dealer group here who have the ability to put on days like this I guess. The GSX1250 would be a nice bike to cruise around on at high speeds for sure!

Excellent review Bill! Nothing like a "real persons" take on a model. Question is; Cost wise I think the adventure model 650 comes in a bit less, or same as, than the basic 1000, so is that a better option?

Thanks Brian. Yeah, that is a good point. The extra power of the 1000 is nice but do we really need it? And I have read that the new 650 performs remarkably well off road too. I am keen to test the new 650 at some stage as well.

I wish mate! If I had the funds available I probably would! I may consider looking around for a slightly 2nd hand one in a year or so though if there are any available. That is how I bought my current bike. Only 3000km on the clock and it had all the accessories I wanted already added! Apart from a centre stand which was not much more $$ to add. I do like it!

That bike's a year old?! Well, 1000 CC, that seems like too much. The clearance would be helpful. You keep mentioning other people's reviews, use your own opinions. I feel like swapping the handlebars makes sense. Just mod the bike until it works right.

+Adventures in Real Life I have no opinions. Other than that I think 1000cc is is not too much. It is just right for this bike. And no, it is not a year old. I just took it back in time with me to ride it. It was really a 2015 model.

The one thing I don't like is the bike requires premium fuel. other than that it looks pretty nice. I will stick with my 2013 vstrom 650 though

jeff ferguson Really? You don't like that? I have always put premium fuel in my bikes. From my 1991 CBR250RR to my current 2008 V-Strom, I have always used premium and most riders I have ever ridden with do the same.

***** It is proven that if your bike does not require premium fuel and you are giving it premium fuel , you are literally throwing your money away. Higher octane does not equal higher hp as many believe. It only serves a purpose for engines that need higher octane. It reduces engine "pinging" in those engines. Ask any mechanic if you don't believe me

Aussie 1 Here in Canada on a 20 liter tank as the new vstrom 1000 has it would be exactly $3.00 every fill up.

Me too. I liked this a lot. Also the Africa Twin was a great ride. But this is more in my price bracket. But then I'd still like to clock up some more Km's on the trusty 650 as well.

For me the ugly, cartoonish, Cyclops bird face kills the look, but I think that silly beak can be easily removed. Also, while it clearly has great low and midrange, I'd like to see it shifted a bit more up top. I think all and all they've done a pretty god job with it, but I'll have to test ride one myself to really know what I think of it overall. As a side note, the OEM panniers, even the slightly larger left one is not large enough to fit a full face helmet into, which is a shame, because had it been only about an inch 1 or 1 and a 1/2 inch wider it would have.

I don't mind the look of the beak now, but I thought it was pretty ugly the first time I saw it sometime last year. It has definitely grown on me. I think you would be reasonably happy with it after a ride. Yeah, the OEM panniers are smallish, but you could always put a top box on for the helmet. The positives of the panniers are that they sit in fairly close to the body and do not sit way out crazy wide like they did on the previous DL1000's. I guess larger aftermarket ones will be available for them too at some stage if not already.
