APR tuning stage I on the GLI 2014 will make the car a sleeper....

I had a 2010 GTI and when the lease was up got a 2013 GLI. The GLI is a good car and I needed something bigger but I missed the GTI. It just was a bit more of a better car for an enthusiast. Everything felt a bit more responsive in terms of handling and maybe even the shift programming of the DSG (a lot of that goes away driving in manual or sport mode). So I happened to be at the VW dealership for service and since my lease is now up in 10 months, I test drove a 4 door GTI (I originally had the 2) thinking it would be a good compromise in terms of practicality yet returning to the edginess and sort of an X factor in terms of the driving dynamics. To be honest, I was disappointed. In fact, I didn't feel anything substantially different about it than the GLI and in a lot of respects the GLI feels like a lighter car. I even felt that the steering wheel while it has slightly better materials is a step backwards. The power steering is also too light for the car (same as the lightness in the GLI). It's a much better road trip car but there's definitely something missing in the X factor department. Assuming my next car is a VW it will come down to what gives me a better deal GLI vs GTI. I have a feeling if we wait until the next GLI it will only be better and guess what? Every non enthusiast friend loves my GLI over my previous GTI in terms of the overall appearance.

How in the hell was guy chosen to deliver this video? He is comparing a GTI to a GLI and is coming across as having a really bad review of the GLI because of 24 inches and 100lbs. Next video should be him sh*t talking a Porsche Panamera Turbo S for being longer and heavier than the 911 Turbo S... they are two completely different cars numb-nuts. I have a GLI Ed. 30 and love it.

Awesome shakedown and breakdown of the 2014 +Volkswagen #Jetta #GLI Edition 30!! Thank you for explaining to me why there is such a gap in cost between the base model VW's versus the up-scale models like the GLI, really enjoyed our conversation that night at the Price of Whales Pub. BIG Thanks for the shout out George, thank you for all the hours and hours of great entertainment!! ~Felipe (The FONZ)

I really like your approach to identifying all the technical data to real world effects behind the wheel on this one, while still keeping it relatively objective. Thanks guys, keep up the good work!

Too bad that we can't buy the Jetta GLI in Germany (here the GLI would be named GTI). In Germany is the highest gasoline engine for the Jetta 150 HP 1.4 Liter. I agree with you that lease or rent is always expansive, this is in Germany just the same. Nice review. Greetings from Germany.

Seems silly to compare the mk6 gli to the mk7 gti. They're different years and even different generations- of course the gti will have an advantage. The comparison is far more justified if you look at both mk6 models.

This review is fundamentally flawed. He just reviewed it against the GTI. It's not a GTI. It's bigger and a little heavier. It's for people who want a performance sedan who don't want to pay luxury premiums. We know it's not a GTI. People who buy it are not looking for a hatchback.

+euromutt1982 Yea but still disappointed. Remember when they went all out for the MK4 GLIs? This is just not the same GLI it was years ago, not so much more premium over the regular models now. Hoping the MK7 jetta will change that.

I know this is an older video but I feel the need to comment as I am currently in the market for a 2013 or 14 GLI. The video isn't bad however there def seems to be a flaw. Motoman mentions that the rear suspension is an aluminum mulitlink independent suspension. Correct me if I am wrong but the suspension in the back is not aluminum. It is multilink and independent but not aluminum. I was just looking at one today and it is steel.. There was clear spots of the onset of rust. Last time I checked my science book aluminum doesn't rust.. Perhaps you can clarify the statement made in the video.Thanks!
@460nm
@460nm 8 лет назад
A little late, but I was thinking the same thing. In addition starting with the 1.8T SE and SEL models in 2014 all Jettas have the multilink steel rear subframes with control arms. 2013 was the last year to see the 2.5 with the torsion beam rear suspension. That steel is terrible. It is one thing holding me back from a Volkswagen. I don't want to pay $20,000 for a rust bucket. A better question would be whether or not the GTI from 2015 has aluminum or steel.

I think ill keep you updated on my Jetta build. I have a 2014 Jetta S and even though it is a base model, I believe that's the thing that makes it fun. Meaning I can change things around in my vehicle. Sort of make it a custom GLI/GTI/AMAZING VW. I'm stationed in Italy and I'm always in Germany relaxing with friends. Diesel vehicles are very common out here especially vw's. I just wanted to say you def have a new subscriber and that video was awesome.

Disclaimer, I'm Canadian. In your video you suggested that people should not lease cars, What do you feel is the best method of purchase aside from having full funds (or funds within reasonable bartering) up front. Thanks for the great video btw.
@MotoManTV
@MotoManTV 10 лет назад
This is where my passion for cars and my cheapness diverge. NEVER lease. NEVER. I don't care what your fancy tax planner tells you. You ALWAYS pay too much for a car if you lease it. Now, the easy answer: If you MUST have a new car, do A LOT of research, find the best price you can and put AT LEAST 25% of the purchase price + taxes down in cash. That aside, the much preferable way both as a car enthusiast and for financial planning: The 100% down plan on a used car. Buy the most desirable, most reliable & most interesting car you can afford with cash. However, just like with the new car, do A LOT of research. Find 10 copies of the car you want in your area (short of a Morgan Aero Super Sports with a stick, this should be easy to do). Doesn't matter what it is as long as it fits within your parameters. Call all 10 owners, ask questions about the car and if all seems OK over the phone, offer a fair but low market number contingent on a mechanic inspection and reinforce that you have cash. 9 will tell you to piss up a rope. One will accept your offer over the phone. Go see the car and if anything pops up, deduct it from the offer. By then, you will have gotten yourself a screaming deal on a car blessed by a mechanic you trust. Now, here's the trick: Only drive the car for about a year. DON'T put a lot of miles on it. If you put more than 15K miles a year on car - you need a different plan. After the year, if you were reasonable with the miles and took good care of the car, you will be able to sell that car for little to no loss. If you REALLY do it right, you will make a bit on each transaction. In that same time, you are to save money to ADD to your next car purchase. So the plan is that you start to snowball more money into the car you actually want while preserving the value of the car you have. I have done this since my second car (got my head handed to me in depreciation and then some on my first car) and turned a US$3,000 Pontiac Fiero with 90,000 miles (which I loved) into a brand spankin' new Lotus Elise (which I would marry:)) Some disclaimers: This takes A LOT of time and patience. This is not for everyone. Yes, you can buy a new car but be prepared to lose money on depreciation and you absolutely have to love the new car you buy.

@MotoManTV 9 лет назад
Occams Razor In reality, my advice comes from actual numbers - not my cheapness. Take a look at any financial publication you want, they all agree that leasing - while very convenient and with lower start up costs - is the most expensive way to acquire/drive/use a vehicle. Just do the math on the money you spent over the past 22 years. Let's say your payment averaged about US$400/month during that time. The total of those payments was US$105,600. Let's further assume that the cars you have been leasing have been about US$25,000. Now if you bought those cars new and paid cash and only drove them for 3 years each - that would have been about 7 cars - 7.3333 to be exact - with a depreciation of about 50% or US$12,500 on each over those past 22 years (I am WAY overestimating the depreciation as 50% is usually what a 4 + year old car is worth). For a total of US$91,250. Now the main thing to consider is that even after spending that amount on the new cars you still would have a vehicle - in this model - worth US$12,500. So let's say you walk away and move to a place where only bicycles are allowed, you would have spent a grand total of US$78,750 for the SAME cars you leased for US$105,600 - translating to a 34% premium for the convenience of the lease. Now, if you go into understanding that and are willing to pay for the convenience - great. Keep in mind, in cases where service plans are part of the cost of the car - like Mercedes & BMW - you get those no matter how you pay for the car. Where my cheapness comes in is actually NOT the 34% savings. It's the opportunity cost of the money. Let's take that same 22 year period of US$400/month payments - I won't even consider the fees involved like bank charges & wear and tear - had you invested that over the same period and got even a terrible rate of return of 5 % average per year (even with 2008 - markets have returned better on average in that same period) you would have had US$191,741.60 in cash in the bank. So in reality, the convenience charge is not 34% premium over the cash buyer example, rather it's the lost investment income - in this case US$86,141.60.

I totally disagree with the statement that you shouldn't be leasing cars. If you negotiate correctly, if you decide to buy it after the lease, it can be cheaper. Also hopefully you are making more money after your lease ends, so instead of trading your car in, why not get another one? Also, after 2 or 3 years of driving the vehicle, you will know if you want it or not. I mean why buy a car that you aren't even sure you will like next year? Then you trade it in, and have to deal with loosing a ton of money....just saying.

MotoManTV Hey MotoMan. While I understand your logic, your method has too many variables to consider that an ideal approach( maintenance, agreed selling price, time to sell and demand for your car to name a few) . Savings such as 401-K and immediate savings for emergencies should ALWAYS come first before even considering car purchases. The money put towards cars is after that fact. If payments are apart of disposable income, then there should be no issue with leasing a vehicle. We all waste money day to day...if yours isn't on cars, then its something else :)

Ive owned several of the gens, from the 98s to my 14. 2 bone stock, 2 with tunes/setup. While i plan on tuning my 14 gli, I went with it for price. It was much cheaper than the gti, and has mostly all options the gti has. Only difference is gear ratio, body/weight and rim style if im not mistaken. Gti handles better out of the gate, but VCDS and a rear sway would change things. So far ive gotten 32 mpg on my 6sp. Same as my older 2.0 8v Golf. I can't speak for reliability, for ive only driven it 4k. GTI if you need a hatch, GLI if you don't. Stay away from apr. Tunes are blowing out pressure plates apparently, and their exhaust system is a jokey joke joke, for $2,000.

MotoManTV Yeah, but you said "edizione dreißig" which would explain why roninglx was confused, since you combined Italian and German words in your phrase. The word "edizione" is most definitely Italian, and in no way resembles German. The actual German word is "ausgabe" and the entire phrase should be "ausgabe von dreißig" just fyi. ;)

Why are you comparing THAT MK6 Jetta GLI to an MK7 GTI? They're totally different cars. At 4:57 VW has not "all of the sudden" been competing with Hyundai or other crap manufacturers. THEY compete with VW and fall short. VW competitors fall short of quality, durability and "fun" factors.
