2015 Ford F150 Very Noisy Fan Cause & Fix 

I have never left a youtube comment before. But, I had this exact problem and thought I would give this video a try. I thought it might just be the climate because I am in Las Vegas but I replaced the expansion valve in my 2013 F150 according to this video and my loud truck is now as quiet as ever. I am extremely appreciative for this video and I hope the original poster sees this and knows he did in fact help somebody. The replacement only took about 15 minutes after having the freon excavated professionally. Kind of an awkward place to get to in the truck but not too bad. Again, this video was great.

Fixed my loud fan problem, finally had enough of going through drive-thru’s & the person not being able to hear me & waking up the neighbor’s when turning the truck on at 4:30 in the morning to head to work. Replaced the expansion valve & now have a nice quiet truck. Thank you!

2013 F150 5.0 this did the trick for me at 60,000 now at 125,000 doing it again.. when I took it in for evacuation my mechanic suggested I replace the AC accumulator/dryer.. essentially it’s a filter housed in your AC condenser that filters your freon.. pain in the butt to remove your condenser for the filter change but hopefully worth it to keep the expansion valve from gumming up contaminants.. motorcraft part YF37512.. thanks for the video

I took my truck to a mechanic that specializes in ac and did the exact fix. Expansion valve was the problem. I didn’t have the tools to properly evacuate the lines. It has been about 9-10 months now and my 2014 5.0 f150 sounds great.

....... if you are working the cooling system on a F-150 with the V8 from about 2011 to 2017 or so and you install a new THERMOSTAT be sure to install a new 180 degree F or 187 degree F THERMOSTAT ..... the original Ford factory THERMOSTAT is a 190 degree F THERMOSTAT but if you re-install a new 190 degree F THERMOSTAT in your 2012 or 2013 F-150 with the V8 then the 2 electric radiator fans will run continuously after the engine warms up ...... the electric radiator fans will never cycle off ..... over 200 youtube contributors have observed this now ....... I learned the hard way myself but by watching youtuber's comments I learned how to fix the problem ...... I had installed a brand new 190 degree F THERMOSTAT and sure enough my fans ran all the time ...... I searched youtube and found the answer ..... I hope this makes things easier for my fellow do it yourself guys ..... posted by Jent.

Make sure you check your coolant level first. I thought I had this problem but after adding the right amount of coolant the noise went away. Hopefully I don't get this issue later on. 👍

Just bought a 2013 F150 Limited. I knew this loud fan noise wasn’t normal! Plus I’ve had to change out the AC resistor twice in less than a few weeks so I’m kind of happy I’ll be flushing the AC lines out n starting fresh. Very good video. Thanks man!

With my 2011 it was the AC system. I bought the truck used and notice the insanely loud high speed fan. Hooked out a manifold gauge set and saw that the low side AC pressure was at about 38-40 lbs psi and would rise. I had some freon removed down to 30 psi and it made all the difference in the world. AC is much cooler now and the fans do not kick in as much. They will cycle now and then.. but definitely turn off, its not that constant ongoing noise. Happy camper

Update and a little more detailed info...After watching this very helpful video and after trying a few other options I was hoping this was my fix. I live in the hot and humid Deep South. The fan would kick on any time the outside temperature would exceed about 83 degrees (which is most every day between April and October). The thing sounded like an airplane landing. I replaced the pressure sensor on the high side ac line, but no luck. Anyway, I don’t have the tools/desire to evacuate the Freon and refill, so I ordered the expansion valve from my local dealer. When I got the expansion valve (and the washers), I took it to the dealership and had them install it. The service manager gave me that “oh you’re one of those guys” look when I walked in with a part and a specific request. He did admit to me that they see this fan issue a lot. He said sometimes a simple ac system evacuation and refill will fix the problem. A few hours later he called me to tell me they evacuated the system and ran a new pressure test and the pressure was still too high, so they replaced the expansion valve (I was tempted to say I told you so) and that fixed it. They charged me for 1.5 hours of labor. Still a relatively cheap fix. I drove the truck to the beach last week with temps in the 90’s all day. Everything works great. When the fan does kick on as designed, it is much quieter and only runs for a few seconds. I asked the service manager if he thought Ford might recall the expansion valve, he said it was highly unlikely since it’s not deemed a safety issue. Thanks again, I love having a quiet truck again.

Thanks for making this video, my 2017 F150 had the same problem, out of nowhere 2 months ago it started doing this, at around 37k miles. Dealerships will try to tell you it's normal because they think you are confusing it with the normal operation sound when the fans are working hard. So I'd bet most owners will have to solve this issue on their own. Part# still the same btw, which means Ford hasn't even bothered correcting the issue from factory since 2014.

My 2013 F150 5.0 Litre was stuck on high after the engine warmed up. I changed my water pump and thermostat and it started. Took Ford two days to figure it out and it turns out it was a bad thermostat. Yes I did install a new one but it was not the Ford OEM one. After the swap the coolant flew through the system and it was good to go. $180 CAN at the dealership.

2016 F150 same loud fan and the A/C was kicking out because of it. Changed this expansion valve and it is back to normal. My 14yo and I did it without removal of tire but he has small hands and arms. Thank you!

Nice!!! Just took mine to the dealer for this same thing. Of course they told me it was normal just as you stated in the video. Found it odd to be normal when I've never recalled this ever happening since purchasing the truck in 2017. Stated out as a noisy fan issue during operation of the A/C while driving (idling at a light for example). Then I began to notice the fan was noisy as soon as I started the truck in the morning after sitting in the garage all night. Thought it odd to be "hot" at first start up. Thank you for this info. I will get the items needed to do the repair.

I had experienced this issue and for me it may have been a combination of a loose high/low side caps that leaked all the freon out of the system and the switch that you unplug in the video was giving a 15-20+ psi reading difference compared to a manual gauge on the high side. Replace the sensor switch and tightened the caps and put freon in and they said it was good to go.

Perfect presentation/tutorial!! Little bit of editing, and this would be professional grade content. More you tubers in general, especially DIYers need to deliver this way. Any dummy should have no problem. The pictures, are somehow more beneficial then video... I'm not even by my truck as I watch and I can picture everything perfectly!! I have a 2018 Platinum with the 3.5EB and have this VERY issue! Just noticed it the last few months. The straw that broke the camel's back, though, was when I was in a store and the clerk (near the middle of the store) mentioned how loud my truck was. Drive-thrus? Yeah, right! Gotta yell just to get my order through. Def saving this vid but my truck is still under warranty so I'll give the dealer a chance to fix it. Thanks for letting us all know we aren't going crazy! haha

That was helpful.....2019 F150 XLT 25K already replace a tranny with a 2022 one, did the Phase recall and now the fans are running lke crazy...Dealer cannot find the issue......Phil now i have more ammunition to talk to them about this crap. THANK YOU for the info......shiny side up!

Great video. My 2016 F150 V8 had a very loud fan and I changed the pressure switch and thermostat. Neither helped. I took it to the shop and my high pressure freon read 300psi when the truck was off. I had too much air in there and no idea how that happened. They took the air out and added freon and now it sounds very pleasant and easy on the ears lol.

I have a 2013 f150 had the same issue my fan motor was super loud especially when I'm paying at the window so what I did was washed my radiator really good several times on both side did notice lots of dirt was in it. And next day I test drove and it worked!!!!

Thank you for the video. I struggled getting the expansion valve, so I took it out an cleaned it with brake cleaner and a q-tip. No longer issues with the fan. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

Phil- thank you for the information you have provided. I replaced my AC expansion valve. It fixed my loud fan. It was a little challenging getting the valve to line up with the screw holes, but I eventually got it. Thank you again !

Just wanted to follow up with my progress. It was definitely related to the A/C system. I just bought the truck a couple months ago and hadn't needed the A/C so when.i went to use it o. The first warm day.i got nothing. I took it back to the dealer where I bought it. They said they evacuated it and recharge it. I have had no.ploblems since then so it is definitely A/C related. I didnt have to change the expansion valve or pressure sensor. Thank you for all your help.

He did a really good job for somebody who’s not a mechanic I take it that’s not your every day job but you did a good thorough job. My friend has a 2017 expedition and those fans are so loud I can hear him at the end of the street but this gives me something to look at appreciate it

Thank you soooo much for making this video. My fan decided last year to constantly run so for 6 months I drove with the sensor unplugged baffled at why. I even changed the engine block thermostat trying to find the solution. Once I watched your video I knew exactly what the problem was and it was an easy fix! Thanks again!

I have a 2015 f150 XL and was having the same issue, unplugged the ac pressure sensor and plugged it back in and it seemed to do the trick. No longer have the problem. Let’s see how long it lasts 👍 thanks for the video

Thanks for the video Have a 2013 F150 and cooling fans were stuck on high when a/c was on. I was ready to change out my expansion valve as you describe, but decided to change out the pressure switch first since the part is around $30 and you don't need to empty out the lines to change the part. Changing the switch fixed my problem, but without your video I would of been out a lot more $$ taking my truck to a repair shop to troubleshoot. Thanks again.

Hey, thanks for the video. Fellow Canadian here (Nova Scotia) .. I have a 2014 and mine just started doing this but not only when I turn the AC on but also when the heater is on too. When i shut off the climate control all together it's fine. But when the fan is screaming I unplug the pressure sensor it goes away like you did in the video. So all my symptoms are the same except with the heat on as well.

I have the same problem with my 2016. 2 months ago my fan started running high all the time ( if the heater control is turned on ) I just unplugged mt sensor and the fans shut off. so nice to hear it quiet again even if only for a few minutes.

Thank you for this video. Had the same issue with my 2016 and followed your directions and only took an hr. Using forscan I could see my system was under ~350lbs of pressure so I knew it had to be the expansion valve.

Had this issue in my 2013 f150 for about two years. Tolerating it for a while until I changed my ac clutch, water pump, coolant temp sensor, expansion valve, all the o rings at the T/Y hosing and some other things. After changing all these parts the high speed fan still kicks on after driving for a little bit compared to turning on as soon as I crank the truck. I have this truck for four years babying it so I know it’s not “normal” The only thing I didn’t change and arguably returned was the CHT. Cylinder head temp sensor located behind the engine block. That’s my Friday’s assignment.

Had the same problem on my 2013 F150. I tried replacing the AC pressure sensor and thermostat as other videos talked about those being the solutions, but that didn't work on my truck. I had my friend who's a mechanic take a look and he changed out the AC expansion valve and condenser. There was something in the condenser the was making the pressures super high. The AC/defroster has worked fine for now. Thanks for the video!

I had a similar issue with my 2016 Limited. My fans were running on high as soon as turned my truck on. Funny thing was my interior thermometer on the radio was reading a false temp. Exterior temp at the moment was about 98 degrees, but radio was reading 118 degrees. I unhooked the ambient temperature sensor and immediately my fans had turned off. Looked in to the plugs and wiring and noticed there was rust build up and water build up. Cleaned all my connections and blew any water off and bam! Problem solved.

Looks like a big pain in the ass. My truck is only loud when the a/c fan is on. Once I turn off my ac a few seconds later the loud fan noise stops. I'm thinking this might be a "normal" thing. I haven't had my Truck in such hot weather as we've had recently so I wasn't sure if I should worry or not. I have a Ford F 150 and haven't noticed it until today but thanks for the information.

Mine come on when I have the ac on and it’s over 94 degrees outside and the stay on but once the outside temp goes under 94 they stop?

My AC seems to blow fine and cool it's just the fan noise that annoys me. Definitely gonna unplug that harness you mentioned first and see if it stops it...

I had an issue with hi fan running hi all time and hi temp while idle. This is normally indication of fan 1 not working. In my case it was a bad plug on Fan 1 motor side.

I just replaced my expansion valve on my 2010 F150 a few days ago before seeing this post. There are a couple of ways to check to see if the expansion valve is not working correctly with a manifold gauge. As Phil states your high pressure will be extremely high and the low pressure will be low. Also when you turn your vehicle off the low & high ambient pressures should equalize in a short period of time - 20 minutes. If after a hour the high pressure is still a lot higher than the low pressure your expansion valve is probably pugged. I still have an AC problem I'm diagnosing, but I had an expansion valve problem that has been corrected. Now I found when I turn on the AC the radiator fan does not run at all for several minutes; then the high speed fan comes on for a few minutes then kicks off again and this cycle repeats. The vent temperature drops about 20 deg f, but should drop 40 deg f. I'm in Houston so it is hot here. Also the pressures only seem to respond when the high speed fan is running, and my compressor clutch is running all the time. I will be checking my relays & pressure switch. Any other suggestions appreciated. It is my understanding the fan should always run when the AC is on; can someone confirm? As a side note, when my AC initially stopped cooling I added a can of Freon without checking the high pressure and it started blowing off the high pressure relief valve as Phil's. I had the system evacuated and the correct amount of Freon installed and there are no leaks. So it seem to be some type of control issue now. I did not replace the receiver/dryer cartage that is built into the AC condensed as you have to remove the condensed to do it. I will be replacing the AC condenser though, it has the power steering fluid cooler built into it, and my power steering cooler is leaking.

Replace the thermostat the pressure sensor, Check the air conditioning system (lines) and recharged it. Fans are operating fine now no ( loud high sound from the fan)

Add me too this list 2017 2.7 litre. around 117000 km. high speed fan runs as soon as truck is started..can get them to stop if i unplug ac pressure switch with truck turned off and then restarted..im just driving around with it unplugged till i get the expansion valve. Include my 2019 XLT Ford-150, Which is still under manufacturing warranty and local dealership could do not fix, Their words " Could Not Duplicate " and I was told this is normal after 6 weeks of Ford of Murfreesboro dealership having my truck!!!

Did your ac work at all? I have what i think is the exact same problem. Its a 2016 f150. At some point the ac system gets blocked high side pressure goes crazy high compressor shuts and fans come on like a jet. But i can let a tad bit of pressure out of the highside line and the fans go off and ac starts working. Just wondering if the expansion valve flakes out and causes pressure so high it wont go away. This is the only video i can find that has the same problem as mine, great video Im going to order an expansion valve and change it and see what happens

Do you have to dip the expansion valve in the oil also or just the gaskets/fittings?

Wait, is it a "loud fan"?? As far as I see and with mine it is just that the other fans or radiator fan is kicking in as if it is overheating and running off and on. With mine it will run on hot days until I get in the shade or am driving somewhere. Seems like saying "the fan is loud" is a little confusing and doesn't fully describe the problem. It is a fan cutting on that shouldnt. Those fans should only be cutting on when too hot as far as I am aware.

Same problem with my 2014, F-150 from the get go, fan kicked on always regardless of outside temp. Took it to dealer and they said it was normal.... bastards!

Great video! My 2013 is doing this and I suspect it’s the same issue. I understand an a/c system fairly well because I work in a natural gas cryogenic plant in Texas and we utilize liquid propane in a system similar to an a/c system to super cool the gas. The propane system is very similar just much bigger.

We replaced the thermostat, Pressure sensor and Air conditioning lines and recharged the air conditioning system it operating fine now

Good morning Phil, would you happen to know if by replacing the expansion valve help the ac compressor wheeling noise it makes go away while engaged, or is that a different issue. My fan kicks in on high right after that and stays on. 2011 F150.

Randomly one day my A/C started blowing out white fog. Lasted a few minutes. Thought the Russians got me. Then I realized it wasn't blowing as cool as it use to. Then that loud roaring started everytime I turned on the A/C or defroster. I'm hoping it stops after I get my A/C recharged. I hear that can cause it. Low coolant can also cause it. Then there are much worse issues that can cause it i.e. bad evaporator.

I have that problem with my 2017 expedition. I know both models share the same platform. So they should be located in the same location? I guess theres one way to find out? Any suggestion?

Hello there great video. I unplugged the sensor on the high line and the fan still continue running on high so this means is not the ac expansion valve right?

Would this cause the ac to blow warm?

whew first of all thanks for the post. i just put in a new radiator thermostat belts and hoses 2015 f150 5.0 120K all of a sudden my fans were running very high most of the time WTF.....then i found your post hmmmn is that my problem? there seems to be a complete lack of direct solutions for f150 issues especially from the dealer. by reading various posts previous to yours i replaced 2 fan relays and a temp unit...........nope not the problem then i ran into a comment on your post where a guy put in a new pump and thermostat (aftermarket).he put in a new thermo from the dealer and it solved his fan issue..........wait how could the be my problem thermostat is brand new Right?........i had an aftermarket thermo in mine.............hmmn so due to complete frustration i decided to get a thermo from the dealer and put it in this morning...............well il be ##### it worked, just got back from a drive and no noisy fan, moral of the story? buy parts from the dealer they are made to specs that the engine requires i guess the aftermarket thermo wasnt allowing enough coolant to flow and it was getting too hot. (PS i did do the high pressure ac sensor test and that wasnt it) but my problem is solved. that was a costly exercise. my problem wasnt same as yours but your post led me to the solution. thanks

Does this only happen when using the AC? My 2017 sounds like it’s revving high (but no increase in RPM’s). It’s winter now. And I haven’t used the AC in months

Thank you for your video. My 2016 has the same fan issue with the fans running from startup and on the highway, even in cold weather. I have noticed that the fans will shut off if my air system (defrost/ac etc) is turned off. Moments after turning the air system on the fans turn back on. Did you ever notice turning the air system affected the fans?

My fan on my 2016 was running on high for long periods after my water pump was replaced, once I started using the AC the problem went away. Not sure why.

I recently purchased a used 2016 F-150 and all was well until today. When I turned the truck on the fans immediately started blowing at the highest capacity possible. I thought they would shut off after I started driving but after 45 minutes of driving they were still on full blast. I feel this is very unusual since it’s 35 degrees outside. The fans only stopped once I disconnected the temperature valve on the high pressure line. This is the only video I’ve been able to find that seems to highlight my problem. I’m wondering if this fix will also work for me or could it be something else. (Tried replacing the temperature valve and reconnected it to high pressure line but fans continued after the replacement)

Mine 2016 does that here in Florida. Wasn't like that when I bought it a few months ago, but it wasnt summer like it is now either. Seems like it kicks on anytime the truck is over 90 degrees and I run the AC. It will kick on as soon as the AC compressor starts (seconds after starting the truck). It will also kick on if it's a little cooler, but only after driving it a bit. I don't hear other f150's doing that in my area so I can only assume I need to replace this. To those reading this, does anyone else have similar experiences? did you get it fixed? if fixed, was this the issue.

i have 2013 f150 ecoboost, as soon as i started it up the high speed cooling fan runs continuously loud whether AC on or off. it just started. i unplugged the switch and the fan shuts off. any insight? thank you in advance

I have a ‘16 f150 with the same issue, and everyone indeed tells me the same thing that I should have that checked out, but living in the heat of Texas I’d figure it’s normal? It’s just bothersome that the fan is way too loud!

My fans are on high 80 % of the time or more my ac works but just found out my heater doesn't work I keep reading comments so the expansion valve or high pressure sensor is the fix?

I mean, I have to ask..... couldn't you simply drain & refill the coolant? How do you know the expansion valve specifically was the problem?

Hey Phil, my 2014 f-150 has just started doing the same thing. The first thing I noticed is that my AC is not cooling like it should. My AC has already went out once. So it's not a relay or a coolant temperature sensor?

Can you just turn your AC off to see if those pressures are what’s causing your fan to come on? You don’t need to undo the sensor.

Hi...i have Ford Figo second generation, The problem is that when i turned on the AC the radiator fan runs at high speed , Although AC is working fine and its cooling the cabin ( i just start the engine and turned on the AC and the radiator fan runs high speed) ..... What is the issue? What can be done so that radiator fan should run at low speed at start when the engine is cold...
