Just did a CVT fluid change and referenced your video. Thank you so much! Great and very informative, ended up doing the the funnel/tube fill method via the side port - way easier than removing the air box and whatnot. I used 1/2 tubing, which fit perfectly Of note - I jacked the rear of the car up to get some more fluid out - ended up with 4 qts fluid removed. For future viewers, make sure you measure the fluid you took out so you can put back in what you took out, don't just blindly put 3.5 qts back in
I found that after filling to the level hole you must put the plug back in, start the car and shift through all gears then fill again to the fill hole. Mine took about 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart more after the shifting. I *think* that this was refilling the torque convert when you do the shifting routine.
For 2018 Honda Fit EX CVT engine the manual said to put 3.6 US qt (3.4 L) HCF-2 transmission fluid. It also say if you use manual transmission you use MTF fuild, and you put in 1.5 US qt (1.4 L)
From my experience with a 2005 Honda Jazz (UK) or Fit (USA): If you notice juddering when pulling away from rest, change the CVT fluid as soon as you possibly can, before more damage is done. This may cure the problem. If the juddering gets bad, you may need to have a new first-motion clutch fitted. Ouch! The handbook recommends putting the transmission into neutral whenever stopping, for example in heavy traffic.
This is true for the older Fit/Jazz, the 2015 on has a torque converter instead of clutches. In the newer ones they do not recommend shifting to neutral for long idles since the transmission electronics takes care of that.
I have yet to do this, but if fully filled, the transmission fluid should drip from the top hole, and it is 3.6 qts, not 3.5? Again I have not done this my self, and I found the video very helpful.
Well mine didn't go quite that smoothly. I have a special hose with a screw cap threaded to take the quart bottles and with a twist valve. It's too short for that long and congested route from top to bottom but it got it to work for the first bottle. On the second bottle, I broke the thing by tightening it down too much and sheared off the flange where the rubber seal sat so it was leaking. Next bottle I really screwed up by trying to combine a funnel and this hose and fluid went many places. Then I realized I could cut the bottom off one of the bottles and screw it into the hose as a funnel/hose combination and that worked great. HOWEVER, at 3.5 quarts I had some spill from the fill hole so I guess it's a shade under or I had some amount still in the sump. I am coming up on 50k miles but I reckon with doing it myself, I am saving a lot of money and there may be benefit in doing it a little earlier.
Not really. It's a lot easier to fill in the top with a long rigid funnel. Take out the side plug, but fill from the top. Add three liters, then slowly add the fourth until oil begins seeping out the side hole. It's a lot easier to fill in the top with a long rigid funnel.
@Jesse Shoemaker where the air filter is you can see this plug underneath. it has a weird little hook on top of it. you can look up videos of cvt fluid change on a civic 2015 or newer to get an idea of where to look. since they have similar layout.
Thanks for posting! Saves a ton of money. Also I recommend using Amsoil Synthetic CVT FLUID!!! Huge difference on quality of cvt fluid!!! Dont forget to start it up and with go through each gear for about 3 to 4 seconds down and up all the way each gear!!!!
Did anyone one lease feel a slight “popping” sound from under the driver seat when you let the car run in first gear? I followed everything exactly how this gentleman did. However, soon as I added the oil and cleaned everything up I didn’t start the car right away and let the sucker warm up and transition the transmission from park to L for lower gear. I waited over night and then start the sucker up. Maybe it’s the oil trying to get settled in?
I just realized my Fit has 60k miles and I haven’t done any CVT oil change, I definitely won’t do a CVT flush but should I change the CVT oil? Car feels fine
Scott, I don't think that is the fill hole but it is the check bolt for checking your fluid level. There should be a yellow plug you can just pull out on top of the transmission and that is where you fill it. I'm no mechanic and don't have the fit but it is how it is on my 2014 civic and accords.
Some vehicles are different. Most videos have it on the side, probably due to how congested the engine bay is. My sister has a 2016 Fit LX I am going to change fluid on. I doubt, but fingers crossed it is on top like my Hyundai Accent.
Nice video! thabk you a lot, but as far as I know the CVT gear box has two filter one inside and another outside. Could you tell me somthing about this filter, how much do I need to wait untill change both filter or just one?
I think the filter might need changing if you find a lot of stuff in the fluid you are swapping out or a lot of metallic gunk on the magnetic tip of the drain plug.
@@oldtwins You beat me to it. I use ramps in the front, jack stands in the back. If I have to use all jack stands, I use a jack as the "fifth leg adjacent to me to keep me safe.
HELP ! I have a Honda fit 2015,and i been driving around for 2 years (miles only 6000Miles / 9000KM) should i change my CVT fluid ? i use the car everyday. but it was only a very short trip. Thanks ! ow and should i change my engine oil from 0w20 to 5w30,since i live in indonesia (climate about 35-40 degree celcius). Thanks and HELP !
The fluid I am changing is the CVT fluid it is not gear oil. I use Honda HCF-2 for CVT transmissions. It should be changed every 30 to 40 thousand miles. That is what Honda recommends.
Slide them closer? The ones I use are for trucks, and I use them for my Hyundai Accent. Jack up the Fit high enough to run them under the wheels. Obviously, keep an eye on the bumper.
Used these for my fit RhinoGear 11909 RhinoRamps Vehicle Ramps (Pair, 12,000lb. GVW Capacity) . Bought when I first bought my car and oil changes were $80. I said nope and I'll do it myself forever.
I have the same car same year and model, this cvt transmission is garbage, reverse and first gear has a delay of almost a second when shifting from park. I can't wait to trade in this car.
hey buddy, my 2015 honda fit run 100K and I found my CVT transmission leaking. should I just check the side hole to see whether I need to add new fluid?
HCF-2 IS THE NEW MODEL CVT FLUID IT SHOULD BE IN THE OWNERS MANUAL THERE IS OLD MODEL CVT CANNOT MIX IT CAUSES PROBLEMS IT SHOULD BE ON THE BACK OF THE OWNERS MANUAL
Scott Leker Thank you for the quick reply. My 2013 Honda Jazz (Fit) is making a grinding noise. It’s had two cvt oil changes. Car is now roughly on 60k miles. After sales support for CVT here in South Africa is very poor. One dealership told me it’s a wheel beiring but the noise is clearly coming from the CVT. It is especially noticeable when the transmission pulls and also when it brakes against the engine. I am starting to question if the dealership ever replaced the oil. How would I even know.
I have been told to only use Honda fluid in Honda CVTs. Same goes for Toyota only use Toyota fluid in Toyota CVTs. But if it is a stick shift you can safely use any brand as long as it is the correct weight.
Hi I'm from indonesia, actually i have a car like yours. I wanna ask you a question about the transmission oil. how many litre do you need to change the oil?
Hi, I have Japanese model 2014 Honda Fit hybrid. I'm using 5W30 engine oil with 72,000km driven (declaring just for context). I have 2 querries: 1 do I have to change CVT oil as well as gearbox oil? Or is it just one of those for my car? 2 what gear oil specs are recommended?
Filters are also essential to check and replace. They are usually located one at the front of the transmission (warmer/strainer) where 2 hoses coming from the radiator and get bolted to the transmission. The other filter is inside the transmission oil pan.
Removing the airbox is a little more complicated depending on the model. This method looks to save a bunch of time. I don't know if he changed it warm or not. I have only seen people change CVTF warm. I would also use a torque wrench.

Scott Leker thanks a lot mate, i live in small place, which is my car only get up tp 9000 miles and it was alrdy 3 years, and the shifting just so smooth, i think i dont need to change then
