In this lecture Dr. Peterson talks about saying "No" to things, corporations instruct you to do. "No means no". This is exactly what he did in regards to the C-16 bill. Respect!

He's a legend

@@jessemontano762 off topic a little. But I like to ask questions.. so here goes: is "legend" technically a term for a presence in the past tense? While a "legend" is still within its current realm of existence, would it be "legendary"? Or would legendary refer more to past tense?

I have said the same thing many times! He had a sense of humor and the horrible things in the world didn’t get to him yet. His focus on trans, climate is a noble aim, but I think he is a bit more angrier (rightly so) but I think it effects his lectures sometimes. No matter what in life, we have to keep things light, and laugh. It’s so important for our psyche

Agreed. It’s great to get the ideas prior to his exploding fame. I’m listening to 2015 for that exact reason.

@@gary_michael_flanagan_wildlifenot always light. Without me travelling the dark a yr ago, this assumption isn't correct. Not to say going to dark is necessary for every lesson. Just for transformation. I can imagine that sounds very general, yet a lot of people here have in-depth situations, and others more fluid surface at any point in experience. Hope this makes sense 🙏

I have been binge watching these lectures since I found the 2016 ones and realized there were only two up. My background is in appield mathematics, but I am addicted to self improvment and understanding my place in the world.As such I am fascinated by the social sciences. I would love to just have a conversation about the things I have thought honestly, but for a basic question, is it possible to "socialize" around ideas? I moved a lot as a kid, which meant I didn't have many friends. People were a mystery and this lead to years of social anxiety. However, I feel that I compensated with books when I was young, and concepts became my friends. Ideas became just as dynamic and interactable and maleable as people might be to a more "normal" person. If I felt rejected socially I would retreat to my science, where I felt personal fulfilment and value. As a result, I tend to have to work at relating to people and doing social things, whereas I will start creating mathematical models for things just as a matter of fact. Is this something that is documented, or am I noticing something that the scientific community hasn't yet? Thanks!
@ansarallahi
@ansarallahi 7 лет назад
it would be great if there were some online community where people could meet to talk about these things! so many of us need to socialise around ideas, we simply have no one to talk to, not as a consequence of not being able to socialise but, sometimes just because you cant find anyone with the same interests. Ideally id like to see a local, face to face community.

These lectures have been extremely insightful for any "self-improvement" I have tried to undergo. All of that self-help bullshit books that I'd been exposed to previously really neglect the psychological underpinnings of why we actually do the things we do. They always take a facile, unsubstantiated approach to the topic, neglecting a large amount of the necessary nuance.

'The archetype shines through the woman.' And the 'guy has to be able to see the individual.' 'Otherwise the woman wont want to have anything to do with him, or play with him like a spider plays with a fly.' That is pretty much a summary of the 'games' people play with one another, because they lie to themselves and each other about who they are and what they see.

Arguably, in terms of Jordan's language, the issue with video games may be that it makes it harder to see the world shine forth, because they effectively are a second map onto of another map, and one in which it is more feasible to get lost and confused within in, so much so that perhaps in the future, as games advance, one forgets there even was a real world at all (Baudrillard discusses this, about the loss of the notion of the real (or reality principle really) and the hyper reality of a system of signs whose signification is really nothing

Carol Jensen I started smoking when I was 10 (1947) and by the time I was 60 I had started to cough. Well, I figured it was the paper on the cigarette (I've never smoked filter cigarettes) so I found cigarillos, the small cigars, and smoke 3 a day. It made me healthy again, so I pass this on to any smoker who is bothered by coughing. The reason I started smoking when I was 10 was that I found a place to have a clubhouse so the boys I played with and I smoked and played cards and generally had a ball.

This was making me think of video games, and their appeal to attention, right before that guy asked a question, was thinking why I could not focus on my homework, I was thinking in context of him stating that we through Darwinism based thought that we focus on what is most helpful to fitness, that possibly, it was due to that being the most equitable use of resources, in contrast to other options(however weighted they maybe by societal norms, {though at partial loss of equity in the probable value, previous success[assuming they were implemented in favor of sucess of newer generations, and not a substructure, created by those high in the dominance hierarchy to protect their position in it. thought this is possibly unlikely since the first critique of that would be that it would undermine, the society , and only a psychopath, which is noted to be an anomaly, would as prof. Peterson has said, "would cut the rungs of the ladder below him, as he moves up"}).

Here are a couple of modern representations of the 'Great' Mother (so you will not be accused of any bias): Liberty Leading the People, a painting by Eugene Delacroix en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Leading_the_People#/media/File:Eugène_Delacroix_-_La_liberté_guidant_le_peuple.jpg and The Motherland Calls, a gigantic statue on top of Mamayev Kurgan (kurgan meaning hill or memorial hill in Russian) www.giganticstatues.com/the-motherland-calls/ Among other things, both representations share holding a weapon and standing on top of dead bodies, and the statue is actually standing over the place where the worst of the fighting occurred during the Battle of Stalingrad.

Prediction: in coming years more of your lecture will be devoted to differentiating between what constitutes leisure and what constitutes being in an optimal state of engagement with your interests not because people sway too far in the former direction but because their conception of the latter will map onto things that are considered both. Examples? Being an expert at snapchat. Judiciously moderating a subreddit. Campaigning with the guild for real money.

Nietzsche is a bitter root It's one thing to notice what attracts you, but you have to think about it because all attractions can not be good. Impulse shopping has nothing to do with Being... (sale in aisle 11) The idea of sacrifices is too calculative, looking for the unfounded psychological truth to worm its way to the surface. How about LOVE, the greatest demand but on you by a God. With love also come fear and respect. Great insight into love and the archetype that shines forth in gaze of the one who loves. The face that launch a thousand ships is that archetype. And the person who cannot handle it is in a fairy tale. But to stay in the fairy tale is be immature and underdeveloped or suffering from under worth. But what can be worth more than a goddess? Yourself. Love yourself is the message. The greatest demand put on you, and if you can do that you can love others in a way that isn't harmful.

48:27 3 or 4 acts of infidelity and the relationship is screwed? Isn’t 1 usually enough to do it? I’m wondering about the severity of infidelity implied here. Here’s where philosophy goes astray. I like Peterson, so don’t get this wrong. The mere fact he has a problem distinguishing between the virtual reality of video gaming and the conflict and learning within the natural world points to a problem. He is equating “gaming” as an ultimate reality, but if we don’t play inside the rules of natural reality there is of course the self-evident issue that the rules of the virtual world - being designed by humans and/or GAI - can go badly wrong and lead us down a dead end...quite literally. The skills of gaming are only of value if learned and followed by the creator of the rules, so the question is, do we want our game-master the creators of software or the creator or the universe? There is, I would think, a clear distinction.

"stupid rules, arbitrary management, counterproductive decisions" -- in another lecture you mention having helped develop competency/personality assessments for employers. You may have already heard this line, but I'll throw it at you like a dagger: those assessments, to the job-seeker, are hell. You have to break your honesty-intuition and submit to filling out answers you think they'd like to see because guess what, if you're honest, A JOB IS NOT HAPPENING. That model--pre-application assessments--forces you to use instrumental language. So...you get to live with having helped shape that added bureaucratic layer of mental-emotional fuckery in the process of getting a job. (I'm joshing you, it's not THAT bad but then again....it really, truly, absolutely is.)

At about 1:35 he touches upon sacrifice but doesn't go deeply enough. Think Abraham and Isaac. Perhaps 1800 BC, God wasn't breaking new ground here. Child sacrifice was widespread and for good reason. If one wanted to be blessed by God sacrificing that which was most valuable to you would be the logical way to earn his favor. And sacrificing one's first born was the ultimate.

Nothing about the great mother in this lecture, Peterson always focusing on being successful in western meaning.

We're supposed to have social justice, like the other primates do, but we seem to have perverted it? Is that where the SJW goes wrong, they're attacking and supporting the wrong behaviors. 'Wrong'. ?

If you have no teeth, and someone bites you, then you can’t defend yourself. You are prey to everyone with teeth. The principle behind growing teeth is that if you can show people that you can defend yourself, then you’re less likely going to be bitten in the first place.
