2015 Nissan NV200 Compact Cargo - Driven Review

One of the best parts about my job is the ability to try out cars and trucks of all different shapes and sizes. I get to experience fast and rare machines like Lamborghinis and Nissan GT-Rs, but I also get to test things like the Toyota Prius and Nissan Versa. Nothing could have really prepared me for what showed in my driveway the other day though. The new 2015 Nissan NV200 cargo van.
With just two seats, a rubber floor and no headliner, this was a true workman’s van that was created to make the lives of small business owners across the world easier. I’m never one to shy away from testing a car though, so over the next week I spent as much time as possible beating the Nissan NV200 as hard as I could. I drove it through muddy fields and rough gravel trails, I filled it with hay and horse feed, and I even tried to put some random things inside of it like a motorcycle.
Despite everything I threw at it, the little panel van just begged for more. It’s a smartly designed machine with solid fuel economy, intelligent details and a face only a mother could love.

Excellent review; thanks! I'm planning on buying a nissan nv200 soon myself because I'm an independent courier; I'm a delivery driver and these Van's work perfectly for what I do for work; especially when it comes to fuel efficiency in town. great review once again; thanks.

My NV was the regular one. But had cruise, Bluetooth, etc. don't need navigation. It was $22,000 OTD. I was going to have the rear windows installed, but during the 8 week wait, decided I'd save the $400. I drive this vehicle everyday in SF Ca. With the huge increase in car burglaries here.. the less windows the better!

Wow, this has a lot of utility. I'd love to have one of these as a replacement for my Toyota Tacoma run-around truck. Especially since no manufacturers are making reasonably-sized small trucks any more. Even better if they bring over the EV version.

Same as below. Mine is a 2010 model which now has about 85,000km on it. I’ve had it for two years now and i can’t fault it. It is large enough for me to camp in and carry my bicycle, plus I can move between the front and rear compartments with ease without getting out of the vehicle. It is also small enough to use as a runabout. My one has a 1600cc engine matched to an automatic transmission which might not be the world’s most powerful vehicle on hills but the payback is a fuel economy of 40mpg (65kmpg). Disagree with the presenter’s comments re steering and handling - it steers fine and is sure-footed on unsealed roads. It is also nice to drive.

BAD REVIEW: From the get-go you smirked at what you were driving. This excellent vehicle does not merit your smirking at it. It drives very well almost to the point you hardly recognize it is a cargo van. It is really a very nice everyday vehicle both on and off highways. Because it IS a cargo van, we can hardly make jest about it having “only the front seating”. We own one and absolutely love it’s maneuverability and comfort. Bad untrue review.

Why would anyone review a brand new vehicle. I'm looking at a 2015 with 110k miles on it now . It would be more helpful to review a used NV 200 now to see how they have held up.
@Moeferd

Reviewing new cars reduces variables. It's also the way the industry is set up. Car makers send cars to huge fleets managed by third-party companies who get those cars out to journalists. They send new cars, since new cars are what they build. It's also impossible to do a "proper' review on any sort of decently used car. I can find you two of the exact same cars, from the exact same year, with the exact same mileage, and those cars will be completely different. The way people use (or abuse) their cars can dramatically affect how said car will perform and function. I agree that having a car with some age on it would make a great informational review, but it's not exactly a fair or level playing field to do that. The system we have is far from perfect, but its the only one we have.

I had a 2013 I bought with 98k miles. Drove it around the country 5 times and traded in with 135k. The van never left me stranded and was great on gas. The downside was the transmission had a shudder going up hills. A/C also had to be recharged. Even with the issues I’m getting another one (this time lower miles) because there’s nothing better available. The transit connect is too poorly made for me to consider it and I do t want the cost of a bigger van.

No business need, I have a NISSAN LEAF for daily commuter and hardly manage to get my SCUBA gear with two tanks, and metal detection gear. Oh its a 2013 so the range on the LEAF sucks! NV200 need an option with second row bench seat so wife and kid and travel. Is is very utilitarian no questions.

Thanks for your comments about the cargo space not accommodating 4' by 8' sheets of plywood. Too bad van seats don't have a space under them so that sheets could slide under the seats. Maybe you could put plywood vertically between the two front seats? Or you could put plywood up on top of the seat headrests up front and set the edge of the plywood at the bottom of the tailgate. I think that plywood would fit that way too.

I bought an nv200 new in early 2015, worst mistake I ever made! With 500 miles of the odometer it began to GUSH oil from a fitting that was left loose at the factory, picked up a nail in the tire and of course it could not be repaired but come to find out the nv200 uses a propriety tire so you can ONLY get them from the dealership and it was almost $200 for the tire not including mount and balance, these tire are the smallest pos tires I have seen on a modern vehicle. Then the domelight fell out of the headliner and hit me in the head while I was driving which meant another trip to the dealership service department. After that I ran the tire up on the curb when parking in a very tight spot, bent the wheel, the steel wheels are insanely thin gauge steel. Ended up putting a small dent in the lower panel under the doors in between the front door and the slider, keep in mind this was a small dent, well the paint is so poor quality that the paint split and cracked down to the sheet metal for about 12 inches in both directions! Finally with 10k miles on it the thing start smelling of hot coolant and started losing antifreeze with no obvious leak. Traded it in for a Ram Promaster city and couldn't be happier, the promaster city is superior to the nv200 in every way, the Ram has way more power, better mpg's and far better handling all with much improved fit and finish.

Bad review, agreed. "It drives a lot like a panel van." - four times nonetheless. Acceleration is a separate handling characteristic than steering, braking, parking, driving through McDonald's drive through. I don't think it handles like a "panel van" at all, in the traditional sense of the term. How about accessing narrow rural routes or driveways crowded with overgrowth? Saying (numerous times) that it handles like a panel van is not only needlessly repetitious and wrong, it is woefully unhelpful. Dare I say, "pointless". I'm absolutely certain that the handling characteristics that you did NOT mention (once) are much more important than the one you did, acceleration, are much higher on a potential buyer's list of priorities. In summary, if I take a risk watching any further commentary from you and hearing "panel van" one more time describing this unique and efficient vehicle with unlimited potential, I would then risk the thoughts about jabbing my eardrums with an icepick I had hearing you say it the second, third, and fourth time in this weak review just so I wouldn't have to hear it again, and again, and again.
