I had a free morning to get the cab, front end and bed off of the 2015 Silverado to give me a better look at just how bad it really is or is not.

Frame is shot, cab is shot, transfer case, tranny, bed, fenders, hood, all shot. What isn't? the inside door handle, passenger side hehehe But seriously, I know there's a lot of things salvageable but all the major stuff is toast.
@vehcor
@vehcor 5 лет назад
@@muskokamike127 The most important part is the engine and there is hope for that. The bed is 80% good. I could probably fix the bedside and I might had the hack not got to it first. There is an interior, rear end, 3 doors, 2 wheels and tires a front diff, rf suspension and lots of little stuff.
@muskokamike127
@muskokamike127 5 лет назад
@@vehcor Yeah I was exaggerating a little bit :-) I'm sure there's a lot of stuff on it and keeping the fingers crossed that the engine is good....I had to replace the engine in my 04 F150 and I could get a low miles entire wrecked truck in the US for the cost of a mediocre rebuilt up here. I was seriously considering it but what killed it was the cost to go get it and import it up here.

I give you a lot of credit for getting rid of that ugly bug shield. The Silverado I bought for the drivetrain had one of those ugly Lincoln style grilles, it has been run over a few times and turned into a target for the little rifle. Some aftermarket parts deserve that kind of treatment. The air chisel is still my favorite too, I'm waiting for them to come up with a battery powered version. Another great video my friend, keep em up.

young automotive tech watching this channel, lots of fun seeing this side of the buisness, love seeing how this comes together(knowing very little about bodywork besides automotive components) and seeing little bits and pieces of measurements and the acadia frame pull video(that was fun, very well made, must have taken quite a bit of editing to get it right) really curious to see the final product(probably look brand spanky new after seeing all the other vehicles done on this channel), also really love seeing pretty much nothing but harbor freight stuff used (i will admit i do have some snap on tools but not many) kinda proves the point to the new guy in the shop that you dont need snap on to make you a success(nor are you a success due to you having snap on stuff), love the great content, looking forward to the next video, hope you dont feel pressure from me to get this thing done tonight, really excited to see the final product, hope it goes as smoothly as you made it seem in this video!
@vehcor
@vehcor 5 лет назад
Glad to have you here. Hopefully the tutorial videos will better explain why I do everything in the other videos. As far as tools go, I have my preferences like Snap-on screw drivers, some air tools, ratchets and boxes. I like Matco wrenches and IR air tools. For sockets Snap-on or Matco. I have one hammer that I use for 99% of mechanical work and it is a Craftsman. The Harbor Freight electric tools have surprised me. Most of what I use at the shop is just borrowed but if I like them, I will buy them. I don't mind using the Harbor Freight stuff but it does not last as long with everyday use but at 1/10 of the cost I would not expect them to. I will say if you have a tight screw, Snap-on screw drivers of any type give you the best odds of getting it out without stripping it. But you are correct, a good tech can make do with whatever is available. I don't buy by brand, I buy what works best for me. At my storage yard I keep a tool set and it is 100% harbor freight. I'm not pressured by anyone. It was more to address the people that think I just stop everything and focus on a build. I usually have 3-5 going on at once. Good luck in the industry, good techs are getting hard to find these days. It should go smooth, I'm sure there will be some surprises but we will figure them out when we get there. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the great videos! I can not stop watching them. Retired Master Tech
@firstnamelastnameisallowed7943
I have been doing body and frame work for what seems like a hundred years now but in reality it's been close to 20 lol. That does suck the truck was doctored up like it was but I can see your vision for sure! Projects like this are intimidating to a lot of people mainly because the old "frames bent itl never be the same" thing people would say and still believe today! I have had cars on my rack that were new, brand new, not hit and they were not square and level. The tech they have our now like you said you can make something better then what it was from the factory if you are willing to work for it. I started on unibody cars replacing strut towers and roofs and major sections that most think you can not do but with the right tools it's all just sheet metal spot welded together. Panel bond aka God's glue I call it from the time it saves is another very useful tool that helps a lot, but the point of this book I'm writing here is that anyone can do this work if you just pay attention, mark things or take pictures, bag up bolts stuff like that and just never say it can't be done cuz that's not true! Can't wait to see you succeed on this build!!
@vehcor
@vehcor 5 лет назад
I agree but manufacturers have spent so much money to brain wash people into thinking, "new cars are perfect and even minimal damage means junk" that people actually buy it. The truck is definitely a mess. The engine is savable. A replacement rear cover and new flexplate and you should be good. That transmission is toast...I think you could get some scrap metal money for it. I know it will be great once you are finished. Good luck and I can't wait to see the timelapse.
@vehcor
@vehcor 5 лет назад
The rear cover is actually cheap. I didn't think cheap and Duramax could be used in the same sentence. lol The trans bell housing and tail shaft are cheap as well but I am concerned with the input shaft so I will probably not risk it. The t/c will make an excellent paperweight. Thanks for watching!

Eh, no point in dwelling on the bad, focus on the problem and come up with a solution. I actually think I like solving problems as much as fixing cars so this was just a bunch of problems to solve. lol I think my only mistake when this is over will be getting rid of my LBZ. It was problem free until a month ago when a gremlin got into it. It was just an ignition switch that took 10 minutes to change but almost left me stranded. I like trucks, they are so easy. Everything bolts together(unless you want to piece in a cab or bed). It is never to late to try a rebuild. A light front hit would be easy. Make sure it is over the frame and everything bolts on (on a GM anyway). Ford has a unibody and Dodge kind of does as well. Thanks for watching.

I get two days at best and occasionally have a guy or two that will help me out. lol Thanks for watching.
@allanjiang9801

One step at a time, I see. Yes, it was a mistake in the beginning, but it's bound to be a long adventure and nothing you can't handle. An LML HD is a solid truck, can't wait to see it slowly straightened out. Poor Allison and MP1626...looks like a bomb went off inside each of them. But it shouldn't be too bad, 1:15 into the video and it already looks 50% better lol. Seriously though, it breaks my heart to see that appalling camo shit on a new F-150 or Silverado. I've seen entire trucks decked out in camo from the hood protector to the bumpers all the way down to a "two-tone" wrap all the way around the truck.
@vehcor
@vehcor 5 лет назад
The more I work on it the less of a mistake it becomes. Had I known about the trans and t/c, I would have bid less and never been able to buy the truck. I don't mind bug shields but camo belongs on hunting equipment not a black truck that never leaves the road. lol The entire job doesn't bother me at all, I planned on all of it except buying the trans and t/c. It is a slow process for now as I get some prep work done and schedules lined up but it will be a weekend job to really get the majority done. Thanks for the support!

Just found your channel it is so informative. Could you recommend what type of body work project a neophyte for a first time?
@vehcor
@vehcor 5 лет назад
Thanks, I most certainly could. I always recommend starting with a light front hit. Straight on, like a car that rear ended another. Front ends have mostly bolt on parts and are a good way to start learning. Very light side hits that only require bolt on parts replacement are not to bad either but it is very easy to get one that will need a little pulling on a door opening. I will have some tutorial videos that explain this a little more in depth. Thanks for watching and glad to have you with us.

@vehcor

Those inspection ports can be handy. It has never been easier to get to the torque converter bolts. This poor truck has had a rough life and it is so young. lol The donor most certainly is a diesel. So worst case scenario I just use the entire drivetrain out of the donor.
@FTWarr
@FTWarr 5 лет назад
Yeah the good thing is it didn't look like any teeth were chipped on the transfer case. I'm sure finding a new cab would be less labor but depending on the donor you could do a cab clip. Serious question. Can you put a good housing on the transfer case and transmission or are these parts complete garbage now? I’ve never messed with big engines but a little with motorbikes and I’ve swapped engine cases on motors that were cracked and damaged.
@vehcor
@vehcor 5 лет назад
Serious answer. I could just bolt on a new bell housing and have the tail shaft housing welded around the trans mount or replace it as well. What does concern me is the input shaft. Since the trans was pulled away at an angle, I fear it may be bent. I think I'm just going to sell it as a core, it is still worth some money for that. Thanks for watching.
