On this video we go step by step on how to change the CVT fluid, filter and gasket on a 2015 Toyota Corolla.
2020 Update, after performing many services. I've come to the conclusion that: You just need to add the same amount of fluid as you took out. which is roughly about 4.1L to 4.3 L [this is replacing the filter] (almost the same amount of the Toyota CVT FE 4L fluid 08886-02505 . In reality its more than 4L, about 4.5L), cycle the transmission P, R, N,D, M(+-) back and forth at 3 sec intervals each, and call it a day.

Finally, a tech that does the job correct. So many do a drain and fill, 1.5 qts witch accomplishes nothing. Thank you for being a professional...

The only reason he pulled off the transmission pan is that there was a leak coming from it. He states this in the video. I don't think that many mechanics do this unless a problem exists.

What I find really dumb is the design of that pan. The drain should be at the lowest point, not up as high as possible in it. I am sure they have some sort of bullsh!t reason why they think that was better.

@@Justin-hz8bh I changed the fluid because my original CVT failed and I had to replace it with one out of a junkyard wreck (reportedly with only 17,000 miles on it). Since I didn't know the history, I wanted to change the fluid. It was a very easy process, other than the fact that I had it all buttoned back up and filled when I discovered that I'd forgotten to put the magnets back in the pan. Haste makes waste! The whole fluid/filter change should take 45 minutes.

@jamesturnure9735
@jamesturnure9735 3 года назад
@@Justin-hz8bh My failure mode was rather dramatic. Driving steady state, the RPM's would suddenly build to almost redline. Would have to shift it into neutral quickly. Lost the deceleration braking function and the car became undrivable. I'd operated it some 85,000 miles in heavy stop-n-go traffic with no servicing of the trans (as it was not called for in the service guide). I chose to swap it out because I had to have the car and had no time to tear the trans down...my suspicion is that the problem was totally in the valve body and likely main metering solenoid controlling pressure to the chain. New trans has been flawless and fluid was clean when I changed it.
@Justin-hz8bh
@Justin-hz8bh 3 года назад
@@jamesturnure9735 Thanks again. My only remaining question the video wasn't too clear about is how to tell when the fluid level is correct? And I'm seeing cvt's for our cars from $200-$1000. How much did you pay, if I may ask?
@jshepard152
@jshepard152 Год назад
I spent a couple weeks collecting the tools I'd need to do a fluid drain and fill on my 2015 Corolla. My one bit of advice is to do it when the transmission is unquestionably cold. Get the car into a level spot and leave it there, then do the drain and fill in the morning. That will greatly reduce the chances of under filling the transmission, which is easy to do. You also don't need this pump apparatus. A small funnel and a couple feet of 1/2" vinyl tubing works great.
@thronemovie9035
@thronemovie9035 6 месяцев назад
if done like this can we just replace same amount which came out and be done with it? ... so no overfill check needed ?
@jshepard152
@jshepard152 6 месяцев назад
@@thronemovie9035 Some people do that. It's not the method I used but I see the logic of it. The one downside is that if the transmission were low on fluid when you started, it would still be low when you're finished. The temperature check procedure is overly complicated but doable.

@Chorizomicks

In addition, when adding fluid. Add fluid until you see drops from the straw. After that, add another 1.2L (specific fluid amount) from Toyota manual. Then you can proceed to fluid and temp check
@yactabay
@yactabay 2 года назад
@@Chorizomicks Car Care Nut just adds half a quart ( half a liter works too) more than he drained out then does the draining while car running and at proper temperature until dripping becomes unsteady. Just add half more and let the excess drain out. It's a fool-proof way. Beats having to take fill plug off again if you under-filled it(when nothing drips out). This video is excellent though and he put in the same amount and still had excess fluid when time to measure came. This and other videos made this job almost effortless for me. Just a tip. It seems only Beck Arnley makes the right aftermarket strainer(filter) for the CVT model. I could not wait for one to come in three days later so I bought it costlier at the dealership.

Toyota dealer said they would take all the cvt fluid out and would not change the filter because there are no replaceable filters to be changed. Is taking all the fluid out is a risky approach? Will it cause transmission slip? Please advise. Thank you.
@DNYautomotive
@DNYautomotive 4 года назад
My answer would be.. if they (TOYOTA) sell the filter, and as a regular oil filter will eventually get dirty, your best approach would be to change it. If you are spending so much money and effort, now will be the best time to replace all filters and gaskets. One way where I've seen transmission slip, its when you force fluid in, with a machine, that will clog up your valve body lines since the passages are really small, eventually making the transmission slip. Your best bet would be replacing your fluid more often, say every 40k miles or so, and you only replace about 4L, for this Corolla it takes about 8L.

Assume there is 10 million automatic mechanics in the US; just think HOW many of them would do what you did to this car? Huh? I would say less than 5 percent. Oh indeed. Most would laugh and scoff at all the wonderful efforts you did to make the job professional and right. For 95 percent ONLY care about their paycheck and/or commission and/or the "gestapo" pressure put on them to "GETTER DONE!". Others would disagree; but I hold to this. It is a horrible thing that is being done to automobiles ALL over America today. And worse are the dealer mechanics. Oh indeed. Only a blind fool does not know this to be fact absolute. Toyota US warranty states 60,000 miles or 5 years of warranty whichever comes first on powertrain components such as engine, transaxle and differentials. My advice would be to check with Chile's law and policies toward new vehicle warranty. if that doesn't work.. check if you can get a used transaxle at your local junkyard. It will be a lot cheaper!

Great video.. question, checking the fluid level will it be through the fill port if it drains out? Or must u remove the drain plug itself? If so it wasn’t clear.. must the fluid flow like that after fill in order to know if it’s correct ?
@spacecoastz4026
@spacecoastz4026 3 года назад
You use the drain plug hole, but with the straw installed. You have to bring the fluid up to a proper temp (including shifting it in gears)...then after that fluid expands any excess will flow over the small plastic tube (straw) and out through the drain hole. If you notice as soon as the excess fluid started to "drip" he replaced the drain plug. If nothing came out, then its under-filled and more fluid must be installed. You also can't allow the fluid to get past the proper temp, or else too much will drain out.
@Cyclingmasterseller
@Cyclingmasterseller Год назад
I saw the fluid in the container that you initially drained, but there was a lot of other fluid that came out after that -- was that also dumped into the same container, because it didn't look like it? If not the fluid fill would be short.

I have 170,000mi on my 2015 corolla. I brought it to the dealership at 107k miles to have the CVT fluid replaced and they refused, saying it could do more harm than good. Now, I'm thinking of replacing the fluid on my own, but only doing 1/3 of the fluid at a time over say 3 months just to ease the CVT into its new fluid. I think doing it this way could help eliminate any issues. What do you think?

To get the majority of the fluid to be new, it would be best to do this process 3-4 times consecutively in order to flush out. Correct me if I'm wrong otherwise you would be left with 2 thirds of the old fluid still in the trans.
@jshepard152
@jshepard152 Год назад
You're exactly correct. Most people get about 2.5 quarts out of 7 drained per service, so about 35%. Still, most people seem to agree that doing that change every 60k miles is sufficient. You could always overachieve.

In the video it says to replace fluid with same amount that was removed. After it was filled( with the same amount removed?)with fluid you removed metal drain plug right away and fluid coming out was overfill? Confused.. is it safe to just put how much to pump in? then if you removed drain plug after, it wouldnt be so much overfill, right? is it neccerty to remove drain plug if you just pumped in what manufacture says? How do you know you have achieved the correct fluid level? How do you go about knowing that after you let the engine warm up and run through the gears at 3 second intervals, do you release the drain plug while the car is still idling? And also how do you know when you have achieved correct fluid level and how do you know if you need to add more fluid if needed?

You could weigh the amount that comes out, then weigh the same to put back. Make sure you put the waste container on a scale first, reset to ZERO, so the container weight is not part of the drained oil.
