My 2017 Passat had the exact same issue. I took my cluster to a cellphone repair shop. He watched your video and was able to use his microscope and do the repair with an enameled wire like you did. It resolved my issue. Thank you for posting this video!

What an asset you are to that business man! I’m guessing there’s more than one great tech working there! The OE scan tools, the programmers, the decked out electronic repair bench… I can’t even imagine how much money is out on all that tooling and equipment! I would love to learn more about the origin of that shop you work for, Mario. Crazy to me that one shop has so much to give! Certainly enables a talented guy like yourself to have very few limits! Good on ya✊ and thanks for the awesome learning resource!

Can't thank you enough sir! I had the exact same problem and it ended up being the exact same broken trace in the circuit board. My solder joints didn't look quite as pretty as yours but shes back in action! I am far from a mechanic, and probably am lucky I didn't break something else in the process, but that Super Mario confidence inspired me. I don't know how much money you saved my family, but I do know you are amazing!

Never stop talking to yourself, thinking out loud or talking to anyone or anything during diagnostics. These are a few of the most important things you can do during diagnostics. You get your ideas for how to continue like this. Brilliant work finding out and repairing the fault.

Hi. just for interest. The im 608 can change these clusters with used if you have working key. just auto identity the type off cluster. read immo and eeprom data via obd. then just write it back to used replacement cluster and car will start with old key and have correct mileage

Outstanding “logical” troubleshooting! Back in the day when I ran a BMW repair shop, I experimented on my own E39 540i in doing an M5 cluster swap. The needles stopped me dead in my tracks. I swear some of them semi-bond themselves to the holders and are impossible to remove w/o breaking. Either way at $2k a pop, it’s not a repair to take lightly. Great job!

Thank you so so very much. I love the stick-to-it-ness and not giving up. If I could add a possible cause. Wire running to the washer pump from the engine compartment down into the lower wheel well rubbed against the sharp metalwork. Very hard to spot since there is no give in the wire but I found the tell take blue corrosion of copper showing after weeks of scratching my head and eliminating thins. I put two and two and two together finally, since about 18 months earlier I had an on and off washer pump issue. BTW, no fuse on my 2013 for the pump. Speedo had this same trace fried. Fixed the wire, tv repair guy soldered the trace. Everything works. Thank you. Sending you lots of good energy.

Mario. I loved your work on this car. I was elated to see you had a bad trace. As an "old" (yes, 83) USAF aircraft avionics maintenance man, I loved "bench work" that allowed us to check those circuit boards for broken and cold solder joints. Although those "ESD" boards were difficult to work with, it was easy to "destroy" those MOSFET gates. :-) I found your channel via Ivan at PHAD - he was "big" on you, so I knew you must be "the man" - and you definitely are. I've followed Ivan for quite a while - and learned a great deal from him. Still keeping my old -07 Buick Lacrosse, 3.6 ltr running. - have some minimum test equipment, which has really helped. Have the Mitchell diagrams which are fine. The Lacrosse has 172,000 on it now - but I do baby it. :-) Still has the same 3 timing chains and phasers. You are a monster technician and I'll be tuning in when I see your channel come up. Many thanks for making me a smarter tech. AD

Excellent job Mario. The words ‘Power Probe’ were ringing in my head just a second before you mentioned it as a possibility. I think the same diagnostic brain that solved this diag may well have diagnosed the most likely cause of the burnt track on that cluster. You just saved your customer a LOT of money. That’s the kind of fix that will keep people coming to you and your shop. I’m also wondering for other technicians who maybe wouldn’t be quite so brave when it came to having a go at repairing the cluster, might the addition of an external ground have done the trick for this particular job? Anyhoo, top job👍

Good job. But as you showed investment in test equipment is required to get a professional outcome. Also knowledge and technique are also very important. Over the years I have seen far too many PCB's butchered by those who think anyone can do it. it takes time to get to this skill level.

why not bridge the 2 wires externally with a 1 amp fuse, this eliminates any chance of disturbing any thing else inside the cluster. well done

would it be an option to provide additional ground in comfortable spot outside the cluster itself? Let's say if the damage in the cluster would be visible but not repairable? And yes I would question the owner and try to find out if this has happened itself or after some sort of after repair/service at some place. As its always intresting to know.As we all know is not just a " Oh it was just a blown fuse". Fuse blows for a reason. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Arthur, the scope itself is an amscope, sm745t, the articulating arm is also amscope. The scope is trinocular, for the sake of the footage, but it's not required if you don't plan on either filming it or using it in conjunction with a monitor
