When it comes to hot hatchbacks in the U.S., Ford reigns supreme with its ST line. The Fiesta ST and Focus ST are very similar vehicles, but also widely different vehicles. I expected the Focus ST would be the clear winner... then I tested both and to my surprise I drove home in the Fiesta ST. Incredibly fun to drive.

The Fiesta ST weighs under 2800 lbs while the Focus ST is over 3200 lbs. Compared to the Focus the Fiesta is more nimble and has a more 'raw' feel to it, more connected and direct. If you primarily do city driving I would recommend the FIESTA ST, if you spend a lot of time on the hwy and less time in the twisties get the FOCUS ST. That's my recommendation after spending lots of time with both vehicles.

Both cars are very close in performance stock vs stock, Motortrend times were within 0.3 and 3 mph in the 1/4 mile I believe. It really isn't about the numbers when comparing these two cars. The biggest positive difference between them is the overall driving and steering feel of the Fiesta ST along with the lighter weight (500 lbs) compared to the Focus ST.

I own both (2013 Focus ST & 2015 Fiesta ST). From personal experience; if you don't need a lot of luggage space, don't bother with the Focus. You need bigger parking spaces, the maintenance is more expensive and you'll anyway end up leaving it in the garage because the Fiesta just has that gocart feel to it. The Focus does feel more planted though.

Got a Fiesta ST 5 days / 500 miles ago. For me it has better rear visibility than the Focus. Also with the Focus to fold the rear seats down you have to lift the bottoms, fold them forward then remove the headrests. With the Fiesta they just fold flat. No biggie if you don't plan to haul much but I do. I'm in my 50's, decided to get a new car but none of the various test drives got me excited until the Fiesta ST. It makes me want to drive, something I have not felt in years.

I was stuck between these 2 as well. Ended up with the Fiesta mainly because of the handling being a tad better. Installing a Cobb Accessport & Cobb rear motor mount this week. Can't wait!

Forget speed. Cornering while driving on mountain roads is my thing. I'll stick to the fiesta st, which is the more nimble of the two.

same here. the focus was slightly better car than my stage2+ jetta (240whp). better around corners than my jetta for sure. but i found the fiesta to be a lot of fun. so i got one lol. wish i couldve found one in green envy but molten orange is good enough for me. chips like a mother though

Drove both and ended up leasing the Fiesta ST 2016 . The Focus is like a GTi and the Fiesta is like nothing I've ever driven. I own a 2004 STI and have wanted a Focus RS since I bought my SVT Focus in 2003. The Fiesta ST is the perfect balance of Hp TQ to weight and I can throw the back end around easier than the Focus.

It was an easy decision for me. The Focus has more power, it's faster, and it's more usable for daily since I found the Fiesta way too small. I swapped the sway bars on the Focus and now it drives much better around the corners. Very chap upgrade worth doing.

COBB - www.cobbtuning.com about $300 for both front and rear. You can just change the rear, it makes tons of difference.

Incorrect! The FIST comes in at almost 500lbs lighter which puts the power to weight ration exactly the same if not slightly better, and the FIST scales way better as soon as you start adding mods. Not only are FIST owners now getting 300hp and 318+lbs of torque out of the stock turbos on x37 Hybrids running E30, but there are documented international tracks where the stock FIST actually beats the stock FOST. So don't kid yourself. The FIST is a very capable beast. The FOST is just to heavy for its power output.

What's incorrect? Stock the Focus is faster there is absolutely no question. I drove both, a lot. Check the official 0-60 and so on. I don't care about mods. Most people won't put past the basic bolt-ons. That's why I said for me the choice was very easy. If you are buying a car to heavily mod just get a Mazda Speed. It has a bigger stock turbo. I liked the Fiesta if the Focus didn't exist was probably get one. But it is too small for daily driver to have enough utility, it's quick but felt very jumpy and did not feel as glued to the road as the Focus did. When I pushed it at times I was concerned it might fly off the road. If I was getting it as a second car I might have gone for the Fiesta, it's a little cheaper and easier to upgrade but I wanted a daily driver.

Todd Stoilov It's not faster because of this thing called science, power to weight ration and it shows on tracks where the fiesta is actually faster than the focus. Yes stock! 0-60 is more so on the Focus because the extra weight lends itself to less wheel spin on the Focus and wider stock tires. Focus has 235s the FIST has 205s. Put them on the back roads in a real world situation and the FIST is actually faster in the tight stuff.

In my experience both brought a smile to my face. Fiesta ST feels faster as it is lighter and the Focus ST is more comfortable to drive it has smoother feel and suspension ride. You can't go wrong with either depending on your needs in cargo room in space. Also I think the Fiesta ST has a better look to it than the Focus ST. It's always nice to pass a muscle car with a Hot Hatch and leave them in aw.

test drove both cars yesterday, the Fiesta was ok,but when I got in the focus, I couldn't get the smile of my face. hands down I pick the focus. I'm still smiling, can't wait to get mine in the spring.

I have a mk3 focus SE, the rear seats fold totally flat when you lift the butt piece and remove the headrest and its incredibly useful, no way ill ever buy a car without this Ill look for the ST in the future if they put Android Auto instead of the awful sync that i have right now

The capabilities of these cars are very similar...it comes down to what you need in a car. I drove both, the FiST may have been a TINY bit more fun when driving it hard...but I went with the FoST because I needed the bigger car...It's still an awesome car that punches way above its price point.

Wow- well done! And, definitely needed! Ultimately, the difference is beween stop lights, or, the corners, and, that was clearly shown. As a 'driver', I want the cornering, but, in Kansas- stop light to stop light is where the wars are won. Thank you for highlighting the differences (and, similarities!) and, presenting 2 awesome, available cars to potential buyers.

I love the Ford fiesta St I got a 2017 Ford fiesta se sedan sport version dual clutch it's pretty quick weight over power is how I beat most off the line but not long haul I beat a dodge challenger r/t cause he put the power down and fish tailed and I moved dwn the road in my front wheel drive mine handles like a go kart

A 3:30 video that spends the entire first 60 seconds on setup and then draws no conclusions whatsoever?Well that's pretty useless, but here's what you need to know from someone who's owned/driven both (and daily drives one)... the Focus is fast, but feels isolated in comparison to the Fiesta. I live locally to "Autofair"...was this video produced in MA/NH? i live in N. Andover, MA. I'm looking for a Fiesta St. Bought my first NEW of (5 Mustangs) from Reagan Ford back in 96' (AutoFair now), since then have bought an additional 3...been looking in Manchester for a decent Fusion or Fiesta ST. Great informative video, had an 03 focus ZX3 loved it...great performance hatch!

Hey John, Austen here. I am actually the one that built this video and I can tell you that I filmed it all in Manchester and had a blast doing it. Personally I was unsure which one to buy as my everyday vehicle and I thought this video might help people pull the trigger. I was fortunate enough to test the Fiesta ST, Focus ST, VW GTI, Golf R, Veloster Turbo and Civic SI. I ended up going the FiST route considering I do not have a family to tote around and I felt it was way more fun in the corners, not to mention the incredible bang for the buck. This thing has been bulletproof, currently 31,000 miles, besides one set of tires and one set of rear brakes, even with multiple aftermarket parts installed. I drive her hard everyday and she loves it, not to mention the incredible amount of smiles she leaves on my face. I will warn you, the depreciation in the Fiesta ST is pretty bad, but I think we all understand that when we are buying Ford's entry level vehicle, hotrodded hatchback or not. I support your idea of getting a FiST all day long man!

Austen Jacques I tested the FoST and FiST and am also really hung up. No family but for long road trips...this seats seem brutal if you're not on a track. I'm looking at GTI or R otherwise but I love everything about the FiST otherwise. If only there were a sound insulation and soft-seat option for the highway. In Canada for price, both are too expensive as well.

I no longer work for this company, but when I did, our pricing structure was very aggressive, so the money I saved compared to the GTI, FoST, and even the R just made sense to me financially at the time. I felt the FiST was way more bang for the buck even though it lacked certain things. I did not go with the Recaro seat package, honestly I liked the added bolsters but it just didn't make sense to drop another 2k on seats, even though they include heated elements, and exterior heated mirrors with the package. Standard seats are ok and let's be honest, to expect incredible seats from a sub $20k vehicle is a bit far fetched, and with that includes the interior materials. I recently moved to Florida, drove her down 1,500 miles and to be honest, it was not a bad ride at all for myself or my good friend who is 6'5". Back seats folded and trunk filled with the things I moved with. The ride is a bit harsh, but I knew that when I picked her up and expected it to be go-kartish. Sound deadening, before I did any exhaust or turbo work, was actually quite impressive for a car of this nature. Unfortunately now that I no longer have resonator or muffler and have changed the BOV/intake, the sound insulation has become useless lol. I also have a '14 535i M Sport as a daily which gives the option of the "gentleman speed" unless I take the Fiesta, but the noises she makes, the backfires, the pops, the spitting flames....honestly....I fall back in love with her every single time I take her out.

The fiesta is the way to go if you ever plan on racing/ auto crossing your car. The fiesta is the best competitor in its stock autocross class and you can win first place with it with no modifications needed.

It was an easy decision for me, after two Miatas, the Focus was too large and equipped like I wanted was about $4200 more expensive. Previous experience with several VWs excluded the GTI from consideration.

just picked up a 2013 focus st3 . i wasnt the biggest fan of the fiesta interior or how small it felt. i was also used to the focus size because i learned how to drive on a 14 focus. tbh the focus sounds better and the interior feels better. im also a bigger fan of the 13-14 focus's more than the 15+

Two great cars! My son has the Fiesta ST in "Ford blue"(3 doors, we live in Europe)I have the Focus in grey stealth with black rims. We love each other cars! The Focus has a little bit comfortable ride than the fiesta. Regards

If the Focus ST didn't have 40' turning radius and min 20's gas mileage, I would of preferred it. I'd take a GTI over the FoST. My pick is the Fist, if you want something under 23,000 and balls o fun

In the comments people seems to divide between the both. That just tell me its more personal than obvious choice. They are pretty much alike, the Focus is just a bit bigger. If you want more space go for the Focus. If I had the money I would go for the Focus too I think because I would drive around friends and family. But Since I´m single the priority should never driving around friends anyway. Fiesta ST is the best choice for me.

Iv owned both now and 3door fiesta st2 and now stealth grey focus st3 I have to say focus all the way, I loved the fiesta it was a fun car but the focus has so much more space and power feels a lot more settled at high speeds and inside and out looks better, fiesta has better mpg but at the end of the day you don't own these cars for mpg!

And if you pick up a base fiesta for 21k you van put 4k into it be at 250hp and 320ftlbs and dust a stock focus....And not have to worry about your ringlands every time you want to have a romp.

lol 2.0 fragile? The 2.0 is reliable up to 450whp easy... after that you need to get the crank keyed.... around 500 the pistons needs to go imo. The 1.6 is in no way superior.

lmfao I own one and know at least a dozen people with them, no one has had a single hurt engine and the only problems anyone has had have to do with the wire harness recall on the 13s... Complete nonsense. The 1.6 isnt even close to the 2.0 in capability.

I bought a Fiesta optioned exactly like the one in this video. It came down to weight for me. Coming from a Miata I wanted a car that still felt similar to the Miata in handling, and weirdly I think the Fiesta actually looks better. In profile the Fiesta looks more like a hot hatch, while the Focus looks wagon like due to the sloping rear hatch.

I just bought a 2017 Focus ST last week. Traded in my 2015 Mustang for it. I was kind of skeptical on doing it but after having the car a couple of days I'm really happy with my decision. It may be a little slower at acceleration than my Mustang was but it's way more fun to drive. I looked at the Fiesta ST but it was just to small for my liking. The Focus not only has good performance and tons of potential but also has a practicality about it. It's the perfect daily driver in my opinion if you want performance and practicality.

i can relate to that. I work at a ford dealership and I wanted to get a focus st but even the seats that aren't recaro i cant fit in. Im lookin to see if i can special order one with seats that are more flat but if i cant theres a nice fiesta st there that i can actually fit in.

LeggoMySweggo I had the liberty of driving both for a bit when I worked for this auto group. Originally I wanted the focus for the reasons you pointed out but I walked away with fiesta keys. Just more fun in my opinion. 50k miles later and nodded to hell and I’m still in love. Presume you feel the same about your focus. Either way, what up ST fam?!

I'm going to look at a 1-Owner, Race Red, FULLY loaded Fiesta ST this weekend. The Dealer is only asking $10k. I have a feeling, after owning Fiats and Alfas's over the years, I'm about to fall in Love ... :-)

The FiST is 5 door in the states here but no they only have the 3 door. If you do get a FiST 3 door, I will send my 5 door FiST to you in exchange for your 3 door.

The Fiesta is a lot cheaper, because of the horsepower. But not much slower, in that case I would choose the Fiesta honestly. But today I have an Alfa Romeo GTV, but 2 girls in my Alfa was 1 to much. Not enough space.... So when you want to have a lot of girlfriends, the Focus is a better option.

Off the top of my head the FIESTA ST is rated at 26/36 mpg and the FOCUS ST is 22/31 mpg

most people choose the fist because they cant afford the fost its facts. yes the fist has great handling in corners but when it comes to modding the fost will destroy the fist

CosbyDzn not sure I agree with you there my friend. I know many people down here in Florida that traded their focus and even their RS for fiesta. Some of us just like to eat corners and some just like to destroy stop lights ha.

Here in Australia, the Fiesta ST, does not come with GPS or a reverse camera and is only available in a 2 door coupe. in 2017 we may get an auto version, and also get a 5door hatch so YAY

Can someone please give me an estimated life span of a newer ford? I was interested in one of the focus' but my mom keeps telling me not to get an american made car because they aren't built as well as a toyota or honda. Can any car gurus give me their opinion? I'd appreciate it!

53k on my fiesta and zero issues with reliability. No recalls. No failures, except a/c blend door. Modded as well but outside of brakes, tires, and oil changes it’s been the most reliable vehicle I’ve owned. And I’m on number 22 ha ha.

If interior makes a sports car for you then stay away from Ferraris, Porsches, and Lambos as well. Because they have just as thin of plastics and light weight composites. (Eyes Roll)

I own a 2015 Fiesta ST and I agree with you completely! I love the handling but it is too small and I have to always defend this car because people think it's a piece of shit just by looking at it haha.

+Tom Brooks Don't be stupid, you are comparing a Fiesta to a Ferrari. The Fiesta is one of the CHEAPEST FEELING cars on sale in America right now. The interior is literally crap (no offense to the Fiesta owner :D). The Focus is miles ahead of the Fiesta in quality feel, and the GTI is miles ahead of the Focus. Have you BEEN in some of the cars you are describing? I wouldn't describe their interiors as cheap feeling (maybe excluding a few bits here and there in a Ferrari).

+Furkan Turfanda Nah I totally agree the interior is shit because it's the cheapest car ford makes in America. The money went into the performance of the car. Wish I had gotten the focus ST instead because it's a better daily and more room is always better.

If you wanted couch comfy interior you might want to avoid Ferraris, Porsches, GTs, Vettes new and old, Vipers, and any other sports car ever made. Heck I got a 1980 Oldsmobile I can find for you on Cragislist. It has a nice lazy boy recliner couch. Get real! These are sports cars. Not yachts.
