Even though it doesn't come with backup camera, aftermarket kits which are pretty nice are available. I had one put in, set me back $650 with the camera integrated into the mirror. Great high resolution camera. See the folks at Cartoys. Also, Panasonic supposedly has a kit that will integrate the backup camera into the infotainment screen, but I haven't seen anything on internet yet about it.
Just because its small doesnt mean you have good visibility, with the roof up the view over your shoulder is severely limited, a backup camera would be a nice to have for sure.
For those who think it is too slow, just get it tuned. On the Mazda 3 forum there are guys with the same 2.0l skyactive engine and tuned it to output around 170-180HP at the wheels. The stock tune on the 2.0 is around 130-140 whp. I have a 2.5L with a tune and am around 190-200 whp. The stock tune is around 155-160 whp. The tune for a '16 MX-5 is around $600 for all the equipment i.e Tactrix cable and software. So with the tune you get a much faster car without sacrificing anything. My 2 cents.
People who need a backup camera for a car this small shouldn't be driving but they're federally mandatory sadly starting in 2018 I think so it'll come. Congrats on the new car! Looking forward to seeing how it treats you! Definitely one of the best cars on the market right now I wouldn't mind driving and owning, I don't have anything to prove.
+Kye Moser if you can't support automakers giving you value for you money instead of nickeling you for every feature that should be standard then ur an idiot, plz back up camera and auto sensing wipers should be a given not a fee for fuck sakes that is why you don't pay msrp sticker price it's call negotiating for what the car is really worth.
+Brandon Cross The cost of adding mandatory equipment drives the price up. Even if you do negotiate the price down, it'd still be higher than it was before the equipment was made mandatory. A camera on a car this small is ridiculous.
Great review! The guy told you everything 'average Joe' would want to know and didn't bother with a fancy studio, screen graphics or or off-putting music. Defo subscribing! (And want an MX-5 now!)
I just test drove this exact car earlier today; same color even. To say I was impressed is an understatement. VERY nimble but super compliant on less than stellar pavement. The only thing I didn't care for was the leather seats. It was 95 degrees today, and even with the air on high the seats never cooled off enough to stop my back from sweating. I've got to go back and test drive the Club.
11:38 That's always been the Miata cupholder spot! Since the NA and NB locations were 100% in the way of shifting we all put our drinks behind our seats on either side of the back of the center console wedged between the seats and the wall of the shelf up there lol!
I'm hoping to get my MX-5 soon as well. Its a great bargain; affordable, low insurance cost, great handling, reliable, and just plain fun. Its a very smart choice for anyone looking for a good sports car.
I heard that the power that goes to the wheels can go up to ~142whp from the dyno. Very similar to the mazdaspeed miata that had 178bhp which generates around that much power to the wheels too. So this naturally aspirated engine without a turbo can give that much power, reduce friction from the engine to the wheels, which is why it's really good.
Great review Mr. Bey. Nice to see the MX-5 in a color other than Soul Red Metallic. Normally this is more of a weekend car, but with good mpg and ride compliance, why not a daily driver? As someone who's owned 3 Mazdas, including an RX-8, this is still on my wish list. I currently have a 2016 Mustang GT, but there's no substitute for light and nimble handling, and a nice 30 ft turning circle does wonders in narrow streets.
haha...I agree with all the cute comments but my neighbor has one of these with a fold down hardtop and it does look surprisingly sleek for such a short car. I actually never realized how short it was till I saw this video. Funny how neighborhoods are...I have a 911, neighbor next door and has z4, and now a Miata across the street. Nice car.
+Ara J We feel that a smaller turbocharged engine would be a better fit in the Miata's engine bay. The larger 2.5 would be less rev happy and it won't sound as good as the smaller 2.0L. Hopefully, Mazda decides to bring a Speed version in the coming years.
+Damein Jomtup Jaywalter Throw on steel rims with winter tires and you will be surprised at how grippy and in control this car is in winter conditions. With proper throttle control, its quite easy to use the RWD to help steer your way around snowy corners, especially with the narrow tires that fit these wheels. They have much more bite. I personally have far more confidence in snowy and slippery conditions with RWD vehicles for these reasons. FWD cars are safer for people with little to no driving skill, but for someone that knows what they are doing behind the wheel, the RWD is the better performer in all conditions, aside from the obvious AWD of course. The thing about the MX5 is that even a novice driver could use this in winter, because the car does not have enough power to surprise the driver by breaking its wheels loose, making it far more forgiving under harder throttle applications and also easier to correct in the event it does break loose. Hope that helps. Search MX5 in snow, and I'm sure you'll find something either here or a forum.
Great review (Thank you). I've seen your other car reviews and after seeing this one was glad because I was debating weather getting an used Miata i.e. NB/NC/ND vs a new 17 or 18 model. I chose the later (2018 Soft top, manual, GT) and am loving it. At first while car was coming in to dealership I thought I had made the wrong choice because the loaner automatic 2017 GT miata was driving so good! Lo and behold, I drove the MT one and wow, I think I made the right choice. Thanks again bud.
Yea , the manual transmission is so much better for driving. Light clutch / easy shift pattern make it easy for someone to learn to drive a manual transmission. The reviewers always say get the manual transmission !
I subscribed to your channel. I like the review on this car and others. They only review I wasn't crazy about was your review on the Mazda 6. It has more pep than just about all the other normally aspirated 4's in the family sedan class and I don't think you gave it enough credit for that. Good job on this review sir, thank you.
Great reviews! I recently started watching and all this information is exactly what I need for comparing sporty cars that I'm considering. Keep up the great work!
+peter455sd Why would I cry? I don't own a miata and I probably never will. Its just funny going back and forth with so called alfa males who let the car they drive decide their life's fate.
+bikephil aww do you have insecurity issues? It is usually the case when a guy feels the need to reassure themselves by calling other people out....typical
I pick up my Sport model tomorrow or Tuesday. A white one. I chose the Sport as it doesn't have the TV on the dash, the rest of the package will be perfect on the twisty backroads of New Hampshire. The smaller wheels and tires will actually be more fun on the road, they'll allow the car to be more dynamic, move around a bit.
CONGRATULATIONS on the new ride. love it! I'm really impressed with this and the 3. Now.. bring us back the Rx7 or 9. or whatever they're going to call it. But bring it back.
Got my Sport Monday. What a cool little car! The last roadsters I had were Alfas, a 1959 and a 1973. The ND is an amazing leap forward. I look forward to some track days, I learned a lot about riding from taking a few Ducati track days. I am thinking there must be some aftermarket cat-back exhaust systems that would enhance the sound from the car, other than that it meets and exceeds my expectations. Lack of a back-up camera has not been an issue, the car is a toy compared to my Audi A6 wagon.
Excellent review Sofyan. Throughout the video, I was able to tell that you were incredibly satisfied with the purchase of your new Miata overall. When I also watched the live-stream of the vehicle being revealed last year, I even thought Mazda did an incredible job with how they designed the vehicle, from both the inside and outside, all around. In addition, congrats to you on the purchase of your new Miata and I hope that you'll be able to have some fun with it as well :) - Michael
loved your review, love this car. i'm thinking about taking the plunge, but i'm bothered by the relatively low residual value of Miatas. i'd have to drive it through Ohio winters, and if the ragtop issues in snow/salt are just too much of a hassle, selling it in a year or two would result in a big loss. i don't want it just as as "fair weather toy". maybe i need to move to SanDiego.
Great choice!! In Japan, the backup camera is an optional for the Roadster. It's plug and play so let me know if you really want it, I can arrange the parts for you.
Good review. I drove the club with Brembo and the BRZ back to back and liked this a lot more. Not because the Miata was any faster or better performing but it just felt more fun. Definitely a car measured with smiles more than HP/TQ.
hi i've heard the steering is very light, can you give a comparison on how light it is? i've drove a honda civic 2010, would you say it's even lighter than the civic? thanks!
Thanks for the review. I'm now looking for a used '16 model, which is a bit hard since the car just came out. I just can't stomach the off-the-lot depreciation, but I guess I can pay a bit extra for the first year-depreciation, which is always more than the years after. It's so rare and nothing looks quite like it, after all, having just come out, that's how I'd justify it.
+Redline Reviews, about the cupholders, isn't there a cupholder by the passenger foot area next to the gearshift/brake lever? I've seen dealer pictures, and theres a cupholder there.
I really like the angle you use to film the test drive portion of the video. Specifically the angle that captures the back of the headrests and the view through the windshield. What kind of set-up did you use to secure your camera equipment for this angle?
I just got mines, kinda disappointed about there not being a spare tire, now can I get one from a regular car or what. I don’t like the tire sealant with the little compressor. What if my tire gets severely damaged.
Did you get a new muffler for your miata yet? I recently added the Goodwin Racing Roadster Sport muffler and it is a perfect sound. I added quite a few vids to my channel of the muffler. It frees up some power as well!
Hi, Thanks for the great review! and since you are a reviewer and an owner of the new Miata, I want to ask you ... can this new Miata run on 19" wheels?? Can they be fit on it??
At 11:29 you mentioned the "stupid" location of the cup holders... and that they were removable.. You forgot to mention that they are also removable because the one nearest the driver side can be relocated to the front... on the right side of the center console... You will see a "slot" and it was designed to hold the cup-holder. So while in its current position it may be a bit awkward, they did think to have a slot up front so that you could move one over there in easy reach of the driver and the passenger.
Sofyan! I just got the ND MX-5 GT 2 weeks ago and I still really suck at shifting (hence my 1st to 2nd gear is still really jerky and rough most of the time). Could you tell me at what revs you shift it to in each gear? Thanks!~
I'm a relatively new manual driver and I drive a manual '16 Accord Coupe and my tip is to not pay attention to the revs, but listen to the engine. You can't let the engine roar too much (unless you want that). And the jerkiness? That has nothing to do with revs - just your timing with the clutch and throttle .. So definitely recommend practicing with your car. Can't help you too much since every car has different clutch weights and other attributes :) good luck!
It sounds like you're trying to shift at the minimum clutch point. I recently just switched from a 2008 Miata to a 2014/15 Focus ST, so I had to press the clutch all the way down before I shifted. Just press the pedal down until you become comfortable enough to find the clutch point.
To be honest with you, I have had two manual cars and I don't look at the tachometer when shifting much, I just listen to the engine to know when to shift, you gotta be able to listen and tell when it's time to shift. Also, depending on how fast you want to accelerate, you will shift at different rpms
I live in 4 season Illinois close by Chicago. I have a 2016 Club Soft Top as my daily driver. When the colder weather hits the winter tires Michelin X-Ice 3 go on it transforming the car into a really fun driving car in snow. Remember it has 50 / 50 weight balance front to back side to side. There are days in winter I ride with the top down & its heater cranks out the heat. Just keep the windows up ! A 303 Fabric Guard Treatment every year keeps the top in good shape. Also that 303 Kit comes with a convertible cleaner so every spray wash in the stall I use a brush with that cleaner. Looks brand new after 3.6 years of daily use. If the snow is over 6 inches I'll wait for the plows before I drive. Don't want to mess up the front splitter ( stock height car ).
I really enjoy your reviews. Yours and Saabkyles reviews are the most in depth and well made on all of youtube imo. Just wanted to tell you I like your content :)
+MrGovenator1 A final ruling on it was issued in March of last year, but all vehicles under 10,000 pounds will be required to have rear visibility technology, including backup cameras, by May 2018. (www.nhtsa.gov/About+NHTSA/Press+Releases/2014/NHTSA+Announces+Final+Rule+Requiring+Rear+Visibility+Technology) - Michael Land
Congratulations on your new car bro! But idk I would rather get an old s2000 this Miata still looks girly for my taste but again I guess is personal opinion.. Enjoy your new ride!
If they release a retractable hardtop version I will insta-buy it. I'm considering buying the current soft-top, but the lack of a hardtop option is seriously damaging the spousal acceptance factor.
Awesome review Sofyan. Your ILX reviews helped sway me towards purchasing a 2.4 last year. Now I want an ND. Do you like it more than the ILX? Is it your DD?
+Nicanor Mandin The two cars are like day and night. You can't really compare them. The ILX was way more practical, while the ND is way more fun and feels like a toy, instead of a transportation device. Personally, I do like the Miata more but doesn't mean I didn't like the ILX either. I just wanted a car like this and I'm at a point in my life where I don't need the extra space. The Miata is my only car [personally] but I have access to other cars from other sources. -Sofyan
+Redline Reviews I wanted to ask when are you planning to review a 2015 or 2016 Subaru Forester? You did one on a 2013 Forester and it would be awesome to see the 2016. My Uncle owns a 2015 Limited and is thinking about trading in for a touring it would be awesome to see a touring model or maybe an XT.
If it's the same head unit as on the other cars as you mentioned I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't just have a back up camera put it, I'd imagine it'd be plug and play. Also, sounds like someone was PISSED! That was a long honk! I'm surprised you didn't do a retake on that part.
Yes , that is what I did in the 1st week of March 2017. Got a good deal on a Club with the Brembo / BBS pkg. The RF's were just coming out then & were sold before they got unloaded off the truck carriers !
+Steven Lebbing I guess I'll find out! The car came with factory summer tires so I won't drive it when there's snow on the ground. What I'll probably do is get another set of wheels and use those as my all-season wheels and have another set for the summer. -Sofyan
I have a 2016 MX-5 Club Soft Top with the Brembo / BBS pkg. In Illinois by Chicago the winters can be brutal. I bought wheels with winter tires balanced delivered to my door from Tirerack.com. Thru 3 winters this car has been great to drive when the snow flies. An awesome car as long as the snow is under 6 inches ... if its deeper I'll wait for the plows to come. I think there was 1 day so far that happened. BTW I have Michelin X-Ice 3 winter tires on 16 inch rims to give extra sidewall for the potholes. Car is stock height.
Will you be doing lots of updates and other videos for this car? I'd be really curious to see what the experience of driving this all-new sports car is like. If you do, will it be on this channel or your own channel?
