Agreed. I've always been a fan of the Spaceman too and respected him for being genuine, loyal, and unafraid to tell it like it is instead of being a sell-out and an ass-kisser like so many people allow themselves to become for the sake of career advancement.
Hope Bill is OK, just read he collapsed while warming up for the Bananas! If you don't like this man, well, you honestly need to take a long look in the mirror my friends. I mean, you have to be a pretty damn miserable human to not smile and respect the Spaceman, who was never afraid to fight for the little man, the underdog and to speak out agaist those who would keep the people down! He was a pretty damn good baseball player as well and truly loved the game!
As far as I am concerned this guy was simply just another kid who refused to ever grow up and wasted his God given talent. Yeah I know he was a great pitcher....hell I remember his entire career....I also know the guy could have been a damn hall of famer if he had ever learned to grow up and be an adult. Even today the guy is the same as he was back then at 35....still a kid who never grew up. This movie is just like the stories of guys who once played with him. Just another guy who could have played longer and who knows how truly good he could have been if he ever bothered to grow up and be a man instead of trying to be a little kid and expecting everyone in the world to feel sorry for him. Right now he is telling people that he will sign autographs to Cuba....when from what I have been told everyone out there that writes to him for his autograph knows they are not making a donation to Cuba...they are donating money to support this guys drug habit's is all. This movie was an ok movie but it just reminds me and reinforces what I felt back in 1982....what a talented pitcher ....too bad he wasted that talent. No one will ever know just how great he could have been. He is lucky he never ended up dead at a young age or in a violent way.....with the way he lived his life. The only thing that changes from watching this movie as far as my thoughts on him is now I know instead of just a waste of talent...that he was also a pathetic excuse of a husband and father which makes me think the guy got what he deserved even more.
