Royler Gracie characterized this as the beginning of "the modern era of submission grappling". Thousands of Submission grappling tournaments around the world use elements of the ADCC format and rule structure. To date, the great majority of ADCC champions have had experience studying the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, whose rules are the most similar to. However, there have been notable exceptions to this, such as Japanese Sanae Kikuta(Judo/Shoot Wrestling), South African Mark Robinson (who was a champion in judo, Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling, Sumo, and power lifting), and American Mark Kerr (Collegiate/Freestyle Wrestling).
Just started BJJ this past week. As someone who has no idea of what they're doing and got folded like a gordita seemingly at will, watching this blows my mind.
Is that Orlando Sanchez in the thumbnail and with the red on at 0:28? He used to teach me in Pasadena, and when I rolled with him, he’d play with me like I was a toddler. It was hilarious to both of us, because I could literally do nothing.
Went to one of these events in Nottingham once. Was awesome! I remember everyone running past Rickson Gracie in the stands to get autographs from another fighter. Rickson looked at us and smiled and said “He must be famous!” 😂
Lister Dean I mean, you could well be! And if you are.. I must say thank you! You’re a great athlete and you inspired me! But that’s ONLY if you’re the real Lister 🙌🏽😁
@@friendofilah1929 yes for sure my man, wishing you well in UK (I assume that's where you live) that was a good day, last time I won ADCC before that was 2003 so I had a few years off because of bicep surgery. take care
How is it that a guy like Caio Terra who's won no gi worlds about 8 or 9 times in a row, NEVER gets invited??? I hope they finally added him this year.
Richie Famus what is this type of grappling? It basically looks like bjj, but that’s coming from a wrestlers POV. What do the rules consist of? Is it submissions only? Or what
@@huntersneed9994 Its basically bjj. The ruleset heavily favors wrestling because they penalize for guard pulling. But you can win by submission, points or ref decision.
@@huntersneed9994 submission grappling (so any form Sambo,Judo,Catch Wrestling, Luta Livre,Ju Jutsu, BJJ whatever name you can come with), clash of styles, but today everyone refer to grappling as 'bjj' unfortunately. And the name of the tournament is Abu Dhabi Combat Club held once every 2 years and you have to either qualify or be invited by the sheik
Just people focusing on their craft. A high level wrestler could beat the hell out of a boxer. If they get in a clinch, they could easily hit a takedown, then ground and pound. That's why brock lesnar did relatively well in mma. His striking was very very under developed, but his wrestling got people down and he'd just pummel people. He like 150 wins in his college wrestling career and only like 5 losses. Case in point: Just because high level grapplers focus mainly on strictly grappling based competitions, doesn't mean they won't wreck someone in a fight.
2016's New Star Player them being able to do so doesn't mean they are doing so you first have to fight to call yourself a fighter. It's like I said I got a gun and if there was a situation I'd shoot thefore I'm a killer even though I never did kill and shoot. Also many people are terrible at mma but good at grappling Brock did mma training and is a fighter he fought in actuality not in a what if if he did he could he actualy went out there and got pain.
Yugo King “Grapplers are pretend fighters who are scared to get hurt” This comment is dumb on so many levels. Grapplers have a higher chance to have a career ending injury than any kickboxer or boxer. So many grapplers have their ACLs and MCLs completely destroyed due to high level competitions, I would rather take a liver kick or a punch to the face than getting my knee or elbow ligaments fucked. Typical meathead comment from someone who never trained a day in their life and is making visual assumptions
Glad Gordon won, also keenan is really good I felt sorry for him.Cobrinha is a legend.Cool to watch john danaher coaching his master renzo...i think garry tonon a bit overrated he can win EBI but he fails to lift up to expectations in ADCC.
I think he was coaching tom deblass. Also, garry is very good. He lost to some AMAZING grapplers. Kron, buchecha, cyborg, lucas lepri and vinny. All of those guys are killers, ad 3 of them are much heavier and stronger.
Well a japanese PRO WRESTLER did go from pro wrestling to ufc to SUBMISSION GRAPPLING. His name:SAKURABA. So yes sometimes pro wrestling CAN WORK IN A FIGHT. Look at Severn (UWFI 1992) putting a TRIPLE suplex(only found in pro wrestling) and a SLEEPER HOLD on Anthony Macias. Or Shamrock(Pro Wrestling fujiwari 1991) doing all those catch wrestling that he LEARNED FROM PRO WRESTLING in UFC. After all pro wrestling evolved from catch wrestling. And luta livre also evolved from catch. In fact Luta livre is a BRAZILIAN VERSION OF CATCH.
The grappling seems so much harder than striking. It’s really humbling when a good grappler grabs onto you. I only know how to punch. Never been hurt by punches, but sure felt the pain of leg kicks and slams and stuff. Brutal. Those guys are scary man.
@@knoxherrington299 the Humility of your comment I have respect for. But the reverse can be said, I wrestle a bit looking to get into Submission grappling but I traded punches with my pals growing up so I thought I could take a punch. I did it with an amateur boxer 20lbs less than me. (He let me go first and nodded saying I had hard hands).. Then he hit me. My god. It was sharp and felt like an explosion pushed into me. My arm was numb for atleast 5 minutes after that.
@regular_dude It has nothing do with testosterone. I've been in martial arts since 6 and this shit is gross. You are weird if you like to roll your face on hairy, sweaty chest

Its every 2 years now, I believe. It is essentially the olympics for submission grappling. Any form of grappler can compete as long as they win the adcc trials or get invited. The winners get the glory, 10k for first place, 5k for second, 3k for 3rd and 1k for 4th for the men and slightly less for the women. The absolute division winner gets 40k, 10k for second, 5k for third and 1k for 4th. There are other special prizes too. So as far as rules go, its basically the same point system as most grappling events, 3 points for guard pass, 3 for back mount, 2 for mount (mount and back mount are usually 4 points) , 2 points for a sweep (normal) or 4 points for a sweep that ends with you already past the guard (still 2 points normally), 2 points for a takedown. They also penalize for guard pulling (so it encourages single and double legs, foot sweeps etc), disengaging and passivity and forces the action a little bit. It also incorporates every style of grappling with a ruleset that heavily favors good wrestling. The structure is, for all the weight divisions for men, 16 man brackets, so to win, you have to win 4 matches in a row but submission, points or decision. For the women the brackets are 8 people, so you have to win 3 matches to win. Every year also includes a super fight between the previous superfight winner and the previous years absolute division winner. Its just amazing.
conner hartman Wow my fried thank you very much. ADCC is basically the Olympics and World Cup of Grappling wow. By any chance are you going? Wow that is just amazing.
@@demz6365 how can you say that. They should test them for steroids. You are uneducated , steroids are not only the ones you see used from people who lift heavy weights ! The anabolic steroid adapts to the user
do these athletes get exclusive rashgaurds? I'm not talking their sponsor logos but for example @ 3:49 I've never seen this phalanx design for sale before
