The Alfa Romeo Giulia (Type 952) is the highly anticipate return to rear-wheel drive dynamics from the Italian manufacturer. The range consists of three core derivatives, the Giulia, Giulia Super and the fire-breathing Quadrifoglio.
The model we tested here is the entry-level 2.0-turbo Giulia but don’t let that dissuade you from seeing what we have to say about it. Even in its base specification, the drive remains engaging and exciting, with just the right amount of luxury, tech and convenience.
It enters a tough, established D-segment that is dominated locally by the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes Benz C Class and Audi A4, without forgetting the alternatives that already exist, such as the Lexus IS200 and the Jaguar XE. As such, there’s a set standard that the Alfa has to maintain in order to be relevant in our market, yet we believe it strikes a well-adjusted balance between luxury, comfort, performance and driving experience.
An all-aluminium 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder, petrol engine that produces 147kW and 330Nm torque powers the Alfa Romeo Giulia and helps it sprint from 0 - 100km/h in a sprightly 6.6-seconds while managing to return a combined fuel consumption of 5.9l/100km. It manages to do all of this while still providing enough space for fours adults and their luggage.
While many will regard the styling approach taken by Alfa Romeo as conservative and demure, we happen to think that it is an instantly recognizable shape, and looks considerably more purposeful when you lay eyes upon the Quadrifoglio.
We fell in love with the Giulia and it seems that many have as well, the Giulia has been nominated as a finalist for the WesBank Car Of The Year for 2018.
