LIPH battery is one of the most tolerant class of batteries to use in your motor vehicle. With new technology rolling out, it is becoming safer to begin adopting this techonology and reap the significant benefits in the form of larger cranking amps and significantly less weight. It has become safe to the point that oem industries such as Ducati and Honda started adopting and selling motorcycles equipped with lithium batteries at the dealership.
If you go on to forums and ask which lithium battery brand to buy, I can bet you the majority would said Shorai. While Shorai has been around for almost as early as lithium batteries became available for motorcycles, there are several reasons why they are no longer the best choice and why OEM industries such as Ducati and Honda did not sign a contract with them to supply higher end model bikes with their lithium batteries. For a disposable commodity such as a motorcycle battery, you do not get the best value (and technology) with Shorai per dollar spent. Instead, Ducati and Honda have adopted lithium technology from Skyrich batteries which is owned by the parent company HangZhou HaiJu Holding Ltd. and the makers of other big name battery brands such as Deltran Battery, WPS, Shido, Magneti Marelli etc. All of these newer batteries incorporate an intergrated circuit and battery monitoring system (BMS) on board the battery so charge/discharge is monitored safely and ensures the cells are balanced. Shorai, on the other hand, still required a dedicated balance charger. With that said, however, all lithium batteries are still less robust to abuse and misuse compared to lead acid. Extra care must always be taken when using lithium phosphate batteries.

Just bought one of these for my 2007 Ducati 1098. :) I had bought a sealed lead acid battery and it came leaking acid. Got it replaced and it was leaking too. :( neither one would hold a charge even though they were on a battery tender. Ducati uses a security system that put a constant drain on the battery so for storage you need to have it connected to a tender and plugged in. A big problem with the 1098 is the bazillion small screws that need to be removed to get the bodywork off just to get to the battery. With the correct lithium charger I am hoping this one will last. Thanks for your video! :)

Awesome! Try not to leave the battery in the cold and when placed in storage, do not exceed 60-70% of the battery charge to prolong the life of the lithium cells.

I've used Shorai for 10+ years with excellent service so I wouldn't use another brand. I have looked at other brands and the Shorai has a quality look and feel to it that others don't have. Yes, others look cheesy in comparison. Can't judge a book by its cover but it's a good sign. I also have the Shorai charger. It has a store mode that keeps the battery between 60-80% charge which prolongs battery life. For what it's worth, the plug on the Shorai charger has separate pins so it can balance the cells. This type of plug is very familiar as R/C batteries use this same type to balance the cells in battery packs. It's critical for peak performance, ask anybody with R/C battery experience. One last thing; common to lithium batteries is the wind up then the pitch. Turn on your ignition for 7-10 seconds before hitting your starter.

Thanks for the video. I am ready to get a battery for my 1974 Harley Sportster, I went to electric from kick start only. I put a modern starter on it, 1.4kW that requires around 250cca, I have been looking at Anti Gravity and Shorei but I saw this video and now have to check it out. According to the main manufacturer HuangZhou lithium batteries, the BMS on board these batteries should be able to handle normal charger PROVIDED it doesn't have desulfating mode. However, reports have started to surface primarily from riders who ride daily to and from work in all sorts of weather that the BMS isn't the best quality. One user reported that after 3 years of constant use, the battery appeared dead. Taking apart the battery and balance charging each cell with a dedicate RC lithium balance charger brought the battery back to life.

@@FIFTYmil Thanks for that information mate. I also heard not to charge with chargers that charge over something like 14v, my optimiser/trickle charger charges up to 14.1v, I think it might possibly be best to get a charger made for Lithium batteries to be safest? I guess they don't have a balance cable/socket like Shorai as they don't need balancing in newer technology? I think it would be ok to charge for a little while on a conventional optimiser/trickle charger if kept an eye on, and taken off once charged enough and before it's charged to much. I won't be leaving it on overnight for sure :)

Okay, cheaper charger but what it makes it better than Shorai? Shorai makes 4 stacked cells for better cooling. Does is have circuit board for overchanging and dischaging the battery. What is the max voltage that it can take from a regulator. What Shorai, EarthX, AntiGravity makes smaller batteries that fit custom cafe racers and bobbers. Places where you cant fit a standard battery.

@UhYeahWhateverDude 5 лет назад
Lead Acid chargers do not charge LI batteries to the same voltage, and should not be used on a LI battery anyway, as the charging algorithm is different. If you didn’t ruin the battery, then it didn’t start the bike because it wasn’t charged enough.

You are misleading people in this video. You're literally describing the Shorai charging process at 2:17 The Shorai battery only requires a dedicated charger when the battery is very deeply discharged. I personally would prefer to charge my battery from a very low state with a quality balancing charger like a Hyperion (~$200) than the built in BMS on a $100 battery. That being said I have used the same Shorai battery since 2011 and I have never needed to use a balancing charger, just a simple $30 battery tender on the rare occasion that my battery was a little low.
@FIFTYmil
@FIFTYmil 5 лет назад
Sorry I disagree. The same method (using a battery tender) is shared across all lithium battery manufacturer as a marketing approach to ease of use as batteries should be considered consumables that has a life expectancy or 3-4 years average. The difference is the presence/absence of a bms which can significantly extend the average life of the battery by maintaining proper input voltage and cell balancing. A bms can also protect a battery from gassing out in the event of a voltage regulator failure found commonly in sport and cruiser bikes. That is why the newer generations of battery such as WPS does not need an additional cell balance port on their batteries and/or requirement to purchase an expensive cell balancing charger. This does not take into account the higher asking price of a shorai battery from the start as well.
@kitkeyser
@kitkeyser 5 лет назад
What you said in the video is "there is no longer a need for a dedicated charger." You are implying that it is impossible to charge the Shorai without a dedicated charger. I would encourage you to do some reading behind the chemistry of lithium batteries. Lithium iron phosphate (Shorai) batteries are generally safer and have a very constant discharge voltage (when compared with other lithium batteries). Any decent battery should start out with balanced high quality cells and this will greatly reduce the need for any sort of charge balancing (especially in the case of Lithium Iron). You may not be aware of this but the presence of a faulty BMS can cause a complete battery failure. There are many documented battery failures that have been attributed to this.
@FIFTYmil
@FIFTYmil 5 лет назад
Sorry, not once in the video does it mention that you can not charge a Shorai without a dedicated charger. That was implied by your own interpretation. As you suggest that WPS and Shorai use different batteries, before we proceed to discussion please state clearly what batteries do you think a WPS battery uses and how it is different from the batteries used in Shorai batteries.
@kitkeyser
@kitkeyser 5 лет назад
@@FIFTYmilYour words are "because it's STILL using a dedicated charger" "so there is no longer a NEED for a dedicated charger, you can just charge your battery on a battery tender or on your motorbike as long as there is no desulphation mode." I encourage you to listen to the words in your video and rethink your response. When you say the word NEED that is not even implying that is straight up saying that it needs a dedicated charger.

I am more concerned with the quality of the cells on a battery than the inclusion of a BMS. Not saying either battery is better or worse but to actually know which battery is better than this is a topic that should be covered. A low quality battery will require a BMS where a high quality battery with better cells may not need one. A cheap Chinese BMS is not expensive, while a quality Japanese battery cell (which is what we are paying for) is very expensive vs a low quality cell.
@FIFTYmil
@FIFTYmil 5 лет назад
You raise a good point. It is possible that despite the same casing used and coming from the same manufacturer, WPS uses poorer quality lithium batteries than oem backed Skyrich. However, this video illustrates that for the asking price of a WPS equipped with BMS, it is much better than other more american known brands like Shorai without BMS which is nearly double to triple the price. A battery with good quality cells can be easily ruined without a proper bms and proper care far quicker than a battery with a average quality cells but with a proper bms and good maintenance care. For example, if you plugged in a 20V charger or have a faulty voltage regulator on your bike to a Shorai (without bms), it would probably overcharge the battery that same day and stop working immediately (imagine while riding on the road). In contrast using the same charger on a battery equipped with bms might save the batteries from being overcharged. Regardless poor or good quality battery they all suffer from the same weakness found in lithium batteries to cold, overcharging, undercharging, and excessive heat. Some other points 1) Shorai does not indicate their source of battery cells therefore we don't know if they are good or bad quality cells 2) Neither does Skyrich (or WPS in this video). However, we know that they have signed a contract deal with oem companies like Ducati, Honda, BMW and Yamaha. Shorai, on the otherhand was unsuccessful. This speaks volume about the size and magnitude of the respective companies working with oem motorcycle manufacturers.
@kitkeyser
@kitkeyser 5 лет назад
Shorai and WPS/Skyrich use different Lithium chemistry. We are talking about Lithium batteries with different chemical properties so yes there are many differences. Again I would encourage you to research battery chemistry. Lithium iron phosphate batteries have a advantage in chemical and thermal stability as well as offering a longer cycle life. A defective BMS (I would expect a higher failure rate from a Chinese product vs American/European/Japanese) will cause a catastrophic battery failure. I would expect a voltage regulator on a bike to be more reliable than a cheap BMS made in China. That said if we assume the failure rates between the two are even then your point is still invalid because at some point one will fail and issues with both will be unavoidable. Do you have a 20V charger that can be connected to a motorcycle battery? I have never seen anyone with one so I would say that would be a very rare occurrence. Other points: 1) I would agree that it would be good to know the source of the battery cells but we know more (albeit only a little) about the chemical makeup of a Shorai vs Skyrich 2) In no way whatsoever does a contract deal with an oem constitute a higher quality product. I will say that yes this definitely adds to the credibility of a manufacturer but it does not represent how 'good' a product actually is. A large part of the decision making at the oem level boils down to cost, if it gets the job done at a lower price point I would expect an oem to choose the most cost effective option. 3) I appreciate the effort you put in to find more about Skyrich/WPS. I was considering one of these batteries for my dads snowblower since I've had success with my Shorai but decided against it mainly because of the cold weather performance and cost vs lead acid. I'm definitely not against the Skyrich battery and might give one a try if I manage to kill my Shorai seeing as there is a large price difference between the two.

@@FIFTYmil I appreciate you for calling me out on that. I assumed wrong as most listings for the batteries only said Lithium Ion Polymer technology, which is a very generic statement. Knowing the battery chemistry and that Skyrich is providing this information makes me much more interested in trying one out. The other parts of the response are still valid though.

Second point : Voltage regulator failure rate is extremely high on motorcycles, particular sport bikes and some cruisers. It is well documented on nearly most forums. Personally I know it is a common issue amongst Suzuki GSXR, Ducati 1098, and Aprilia RSV4. In the event of a VR failure, the presence of a BMS would be added insurance. A shorai, which costs significantly more than a WPS/Skyrich and without a BMS makes it not a financially good investment. Third Point: Indeed 20V chargers are not commonly available for cars/motorcycles, but it is quite frequent that consumer level chargers are not precise with their output voltage to drive down the cost of chargers for consumers and because lead acid batteries are less sensitive to voltage fluctuations. On the other hand, anything above 14V is quite detrimental to a Lithium battery especially when there is no BMS. Fourth Point: There is no credible source stating that OEM decision largely boils down to cost. Therefore that is merely your opinion. The legal implications, lawsuits and warranties/recalls associated with a battery failure would be catastrophic to a company's reputation, stocks, and finance. Imagine the news heading: Ducati Bikes have batteries that spontaneously explodes

I do agree, specific technical information is quite hard to find. However, even with the best BMS, if the cells are subpar the battery will have a short lifespan.

Wondering why no mention of Antigravity batteries. Seem to be the standard on most forums. Thanks.
@FIFTYmil
@FIFTYmil 4 года назад
That is a very good point. When this video was made (3 years ago), Antigravity was not well known across multiple forums I visited(eg. ducati, suzuki, honda, kawasaki etc.). That was because they were significantly more expensive than US-based brands including Shorai - with no significant advantage. Due to a smaller population using Antigravity, consumers (on often those who purchased Antigravity) could be biased to believe that failure rate was less than Shorai. It was evident that Antigravity struggled in the market and needed a re-design. With Antigravity's new design (RE-START) and reduction in cost (made in China), they have certainly become more popular. However, their casing and model nomenclature are identical to Deltran Battery Tender company. Except Deltran was already in the market 3 years ago and received supplies from Huangzhou batteries - the mother company of WPS, OEM supported SkyRich Batteries (ducati, Honda, Kawasaki), and many others. This begs the question, are all these different branded batteries (WPS, OEM supported SkyRich, Deltran, Antigravity, etc) now coming from the same source?

Shorai makes a dedicated charger for thier batteries but you don't need it .I would say that's a maketing scheme .....I bought the Shorai battery and optimate 1 duo charger that can charge. 12v +12.8v (lithium) 12v AGM 12v GEL 12v STD 12.8v LFP This charger was recommended by my dealership

its been a while my friend! but not a scooter
@FIFTYmil
@FIFTYmil 7 лет назад
It's been a while indeed! This applies to scooters too. The best part is scooter lithium batteries are considerably cheaper too but you can still reap the benefits of lighter weight and more cranking amps. Might be a good alternative to ditch that heavy kickstarter assembly once and for all
@FIFTYmil
@FIFTYmil 7 лет назад
I reckon it would be anywhere between 5-10lbs saving PLUS the fact that lithium can deliver electricity more instantaneously ensuring a better spark. This might not be noticeable on a larger engine but on a 50cc carbureted engine a better spark could be that final bit of power you just need.

Very helpful video , thank you👍 I'd like to do as you did and find a wps battery that is the most powerful that will fit in the stock location. What website did you use to get the wps battery dimensions?
@FIFTYmil
@FIFTYmil 4 года назад
On the ebay website, it lists the dimensions. You can also find the measurements on the WPS website as well hope that helps!

Active battery management electronics are the most important thing to have in a lithium motorcycle battery because it keeps the cells balanced. Many of the top brands do not have this.
@FIFTYmil
@FIFTYmil 5 лет назад
Exactly. Shorai being one of them.
@evstudios9309

so how did it perform after 3 years? Still in the bike?
@FIFTYmil
@FIFTYmil 4 года назад
Yep, still in the bike. Regarding the motorcycle, however, it has seen much less use on road and mostly trackdays during the summer. The battery is removed from the motorcycle whenever it is parked for long periods of time.

Very cool. More and more brands are popping up it seems sharing the same oem manufacturer (and probably different quality). Ideally I wish I could get the same brand as OEM ducati which is Skyrich but it is not available for sale in Canada unless you go directly to the ducati dealership to purchase it.

I use antigravity, made in USA. but they work on all my wife and my bikes. The key is make sure your charge system is good BEFORE putting in a lithium. This is probably the biggest issue, people don’t follow instructions. On my FLH, the battery is 1/3 the size of stock , but puts out 480 cca.

It is published on their website. I have taken apart one myself and found the internals to be the same as the parent company skyrich. Here's a video illustrating the BMS: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fKYU16Iivw4.html
