*Caution. I am not an expert. Just a guy who drives an EV : )*
Summer EV range is the best.
Here's a few tips to get the best range out of your 60 kW battery in the Chevy Bolt EV!
US Conversions:
12.5 kW/100km = 5mi/kWh
50km/h = 30 mph
90km/h = 56 mph
130km/h = 80 mph
17 C = 62 F

I like listening to all the ambient sounds in the background. I heard birds, a dog, and of course the interestly unique sounds of the Bolt.

Ah well, I Drive it like I stole it because it doesn’t burn out the motor, brakes etc. You only live once and I enjoy driving without restrictions on myself, staying within the boundaries of the law of course...Long trips? Then I care about consumption on the battery and would be sure to employ some of these tips...thanks for sharing Chris.

Good information..im a U.S. driver. I get 15.9 kwh/100km or 3.9 mi/kwh. Lol, im terrible with the efficiency. Its hard to stay at 70mph. Good thing the Bolt stops me at 92mph, lol.

Attempts to destroy efficiency are definitely much more fun than conservation... not so handy on road trips, though!

Chris, excellent points. They reinforce my findings with a new 2019 Bolt. Note: your comment at 9:30 refers to max efficiency at 50 km/h. The manual sez 89 km/h (55 mph) Manual: "In Brief", "Driving for better efficiency", "Acceleration / Braking / Coasting" (2019 Manual, page 30) Don't know if this is a change from your 2017 Bolt. Another advantage is using Cruise Control. An ICE vehicle going downhill can continue to increase speed above the set value, depending upon slope and choice of gear (hard to get the optimum engine braking with an appropriate speed ... seems like you wind up going too slow (low gear) or too fast (high gear)). The Bolt in L will go uphill at the set speed, and it will come downhill at the set speed while using regen to hold speed down, charge the battery, and spare the brake. I haven't found a hill that is steep enough to increase speed over the braking from regenerating. The Bolt is awesome !

To Scarlet Begonias (below) : Better economy in SPORT mode ??? That is against all logic. A clear explanation is required here. Thanks. Besides, using the brakes pedal from time to time is a good idea if you you do not want ending up with rusted brake disks; which has happened to several people. Important tip, I guess...

I am on Vancouver Island and currently getting between 14.5kwh and 14.7kwh per 100 km. That is a commute of about 100 km return. Excellent range and also slightly better than advertised! Of course everyone will face different terrain, driving styles, temperature etc. so guessometer is definitely that! I always drive in L and Sport mode.

It's actually not using 1kW when "idling". If you hook up torque pro, you'll see that it is actually drawing about 700W (with A/C / Heat / seat heaters disabled). If you turn off the vehicle, but plug it in to charge it goes into a mode that uses about 400W. I have a 2.9kW charger which actually delivers 2.5kW to the battery (400W is used by the systems required to enable charging to take place), so you'd drain your battery in about 85 hours (3.5 days) if you let it "idle".

Quick question how long will the battery keep if the car is off. Obviously it monitors for the key and powers the alarm etc.
@homomorphic
@homomorphic 5 лет назад
@@davidbeaulieu4815 I can't actually measure it's "off" consumption wirh torque pro, since it does power down the OBDII port when the power is off. My guess is that it is about 50-100W.

I think you'll find AC is not as much of a hit to range as heat. But let me know your experience. Otherwise, same old same old... roll down the windows when possible, keep it at 60- 65 mph on the highway. Even acceleration. Correct tire pressure. Don't pack around stuff in the car that doesn't need to be there. Drive in 'L'. Have fun😉👍
@mcamodell
@mcamodell 3 года назад
I live in AZ. We see 50c temps. The biggest key is to smoothly control your energy driving in L. The longer you are in regen, the better, so coming to a painfully long stop is best. A quick accel to 5+ over the speed limit and a LONG slow deceleration, aiming to stop at the next intersection, nets the best technique and highest efficiency. Tires at 44 seem to be best but it depends on the tires your running, start at 51 and depressurize 3psi every 100 miles or so, down to about 28, to see what gets you get the best range.
@PhxElecAuto

Driving in L for Lots of REGEN is very good you didn't seem to mention it. Keeping acceleration low is good and slower speeds. It all adds up. Good work.

Based on data from many users on a Bolt group I belong to, I don't think you'll quite be able to make the trip in winter with winter tires (depends on the exact temperature you see, and whether you use cabin heat) unless you are able to charge at work.

Hello Mohammad. No. 15kWh/100km. Is fine. My lifetime on my Bolt was 18kWh/100km. Summer driving around the city... I could get as low as 12.5 kWh/100km. So you're in the zone. Enjoy your car🤟😀

The Bolt tends to round up on the power used or power getting. Most of the time the Bolt only uses 200 to 300 watts when it's just on. ODBII connection helps you see what it is really doing.

On the open highway I find that my efficiency is better on " D" - Sport Mode and when I come up on traffic I switch to " L " - Sport Mode to begin the single pedal driving. I used to drive in " L " all the time, but my efficiency has increased since then. FYI, I drive like an old lady.

It's not really using 1KW sitting there, it's using somewhere between 0.5 and 1.5 KW, or possibly between 0 and 1.0 depending on how they round to the integer display.

Also depends on your 12v battery's condition. If it's low or tired, the DCDC system will easily run at 1kw to try to bring it up to peak

Good information! I would like to mention that an easy formula for U.S. drivers to convert KM to miles is use a factor of 6. For example to go from 300 km to miles, multiply X 6 = 180 miles. Real simple! And you don't need a calculator to do this!

Thanks for the video Chris. Good points. No need to convert to US...I realized what a pain in the xSS that is. I get 14.7kWh/100km, and I feel like I can’t get much better without pissing-off the people behind me. (Or thinking “damn slow electric car”!) When I accelerate, I try to keep it below 20kw,, I think it’s important to reiterate the fact that you don’t HAVE to drive like this...we don’t want to scare people away from the electric car. Just drive without a heavy foot, and let up on accelerator long before you stop to recoup energy. I tend to watch the street light pedestrian count-down timer, and time it perfectly if I can. And people, all these techniques also work for gas cars by the way!! ;-)
@cpF01
@cpF01 5 лет назад
Agreed. I just drive the Bolt like a normal car. I don't feel like I'm 'hyper-mile' -ing or anything like that. Anything under 15kW/100km, I would say is great. 60kW/15kW = 400km range, bettering Chevrolet's advertised 383km. The magic number for me is 12kW/100km, taking me to that mystical 500km range!! : ) I've never achieved it, but I think it could be possible.

I have a question. What happens if you have to leave your bolt for say 2 to 4 weeks while on vacation with a full charge. Will the battery be empty from phantom drain when you return?
@jamespeterson7100
@jamespeterson7100 5 лет назад
Well the reason I ask was I thinking how it would be to leave an electric car at home for say 3 months during the winter. I live in NH. Wouldn’t think it would be good to run an electric battery all the way down for that period of time.
@cpF01
@cpF01 5 лет назад
Hmmm good question. Maybe someone else can answer. I'm not sure. I've heard that about Teslas but I've never really experienced 'vampire drain' with the Bolt. I've been on holiday for 2 weeks and just left it in the garage. I guess if you were concerned, to be safe, just plug in at level 1 'trickle charge' if possible. If not, just don't leave it with for 2 weeks at a very low state of charge. I mean, all cars, ICE included have, I guess, a vampire drain, at least to their 12 volt battery, Bolt would be the same. But I haven't experienced anything with the 60kW high output battery.
@desiv1170
@desiv1170 5 лет назад
@@jamespeterson7100 I just leave mine about half charged, not full. You don't want it to sit full for a long time. That said, there is very little drain. You come back and it will still be close to where you left it. Also, if you are going to leave it for a long time, you should probably disconnect the 12v battery. That will just about totally kill any vampire drain. When I left mine for more than a month, I lent it to a friend. ;-) Never left mine for more than 3 weeks and never needed to disconnect the 12v battery.
