Okay, Not too bad, But since I own a 2017 honda civic sport touring 1.5L turbo engine model, And I change my own oil and I have 45 thousand miles on the odometer so I've been under this car quite a few times im gonna call you on a few things you didn't mention to your audience 😁 First thing is the fasteners that hold the skid plate on! The two in front are Phillips head screws,But the other six (two on each side and two clear in the back) are not screws, They are called Zeus fittings! They have a large standard head screwdriver slot on them and you only turn them a quarter of a turn while pushing up slightly so it will clear the locking device at the end. And second thing is the crush washer does go on one way! As do any washer used in automotive across the board. One side is rounded and the other side is cut precisely flat! And the rounded side always goes out towards the bolt. There are some things that it will create a problem. One that comes to mind i seen it happen on was the kick starter gear on a KTM motocross bike, the tolerance was so tight between the two gears that if you put it on with the rounded side down it would make about two laps around the race track and then sheer the outer edge of the teeth off and lock up the engine! It did it twice before we figured out what was causing it. And years later a very good mechanic i worked for in a transmission shop told me always pay attention to the way the washer is installed on everything! Third thing, You never just pull on a tool when loosening any bolts! Always make sure you have no play between socket and bolt and then smack the handle with impact to break any bolt,drain plug,Ect... It sucks when you twist the head off of a bolt! And the last thing is that you didn't slide the splash pan / skid plate up and back on the four tabs that align and hold the plate in place! It is easy to get frustrated with that damn thing and crush those under the splash pan and when that happens the Zeus fittings will not completely lock in and vibration will work them loose and you know the rest! Now here is a couple of tips for your audience that will save you a lot of heart ache and money! First thing is, get something that you can spray the rubber pieces such as CV axle boots and steering components that have rubber dust boots on them and make sure it won't break down the rubber as petroleum will do! But you need to keep the rubber pieces soft and pliable. And this car is a low rider! And you need to keep that in mind when pulling up to the parking curb at places you park at! It takes very little pressure to crush the core support up into the inner cooler and cause it to leak! Or the radiator itself!😉

Hey Fish....getting back to you about my Lab results. Background I bought a "17" CRV. The car now has 7,180 miles on it. The sample oil was the vehicles 2nd oil change and had 4,710 miles of use on it. The Lab did find fuel mixed in the oil, 1.3% of volume, amounts of 2.0% or above are problematic. Though the amounts found are not troubling at this time they suggest I keep a close watch on it due to the known propensity for dilution with this engine..other than that, based on the oil analysis, the motor got a clean bill of health, meaning no abnormally high levels of wear. Take care.

Before you put the skid plate on you should start your car's engine for a short period to see any if you have any oil leaks. If you have small leak you wouldn't see it with the skid plate on. Put skid plate on afterwards if no oil leaks.

Great Video! Clear and exemplified directions. I discovered from another online tutorial that the screws that look like phillips head aren't actually phillips. They are J.I.S. (Japanese Industrial Standard) which have different radius and angles. If you can remove those screws on the shroud with a phillips, good to hear. Some Diy'ers have complained the stripped out the notches and had to drill them out. You can find J.I.S. screwdriver sets online for about $13 U.S.C. FYI. Thank you for the Vid!

Good vid....I add that the under-car cover has two types of fasteners: 3 are Phillips head screws and the rest are quarter-turn screws. I also added a Mishimoto compact oil separator to the PVC to intake manifold hose to hopefully prevent oil vapors from allowing carbon deposits to build up on the intake valves. My separator only cost around $150; beats having to go through a decarb process at a dealer later, IMO.

If you are planning on keeping that vehicle for more than 4 years, then add a 'Catch Can' to the engine, so that the oil vapors from the PCV system won't lead to intake valve carbon deposit problems after 100,000 miles. Direct injection engines have that problem, that is why Toyota is now using engines with BOTH direct injection AND port injection to 'wash' away those nasty carbon deposits on the intake valves.

This is the second video I've watched about doing an oil change on the 2018 Honda CRV 1.5l engine. The pictures in the thick owner's manual are not very clear, so I wanted to see a video of someone doing it. I use the thick owner's manual that you have to order, as the thin one that comes with the vehicle is very basic and about 20% as thick as the larger one. Now that I've seen where everything is the oil change will be as simple and probably easier than the other two vehicles my wife and I own. I don't understand people who pull the filter first. I've always found that pulling the filter second is less messy when most of the oil is drained first. I will take a gander while I'm under the car to see if pulling the drain plug first provides no advantage due to the position of the oil pan and filter. Then again, I'm in a 50+ year habit of the drain plug first and it makes a difference on my other two vehicles, so why confuse my nearly 70 year old brain! I also let my oil drain overnight as the last of the oil to drip out is about the dirtiest oil in the engine. Just being particular and maybe it is overkill, but I like the oil nearly 100% clean after I change it. Thanks for this video, it will lessen my fumbling around on the garage floor.
@wannabetowasabe
@wannabetowasabe 5 лет назад
What bugs me is that both the thin and thick owner's manual don't list maintenance intervals. I guess I will have to order the service manual to find them. The owner's manuals don't have any information for the DIY or "shade tree mechanic. Every maintenance procedure given contains wording that you should not do the maintenance on your own. Well, guess what Honda, some of us live over 100 miles from a dealership, have been maintaining our cars all of our lives and your "have the dealer do everything (including changing light bulbs)" is a crock of $@*&.

There is no "break in " oil in the engine. The oil life indicator calculates when the useful oil life has expired. "A logorithm is used that takes into account the number of times the engine is started, the length of each trip, the temperature of the engine coolant each time it is driven, the amount of stop & go driving, the amount of idling, the amount high-speed driving, and--of course--odometer mileage and elapsed time." Having said that, you can change the oil any time you wish and the video is helpful instruction for those that have not changed oil before.

I am waaaay older school than you and believe me, I have a hard time with the oil life monitor things, just as much as with the maintenance reminders but hey, they are there for people that do not pay much attention to the schedules and, as always, idiot lights are better than gauges and schedules :) One thing, I will be changing to synthetic oil on the first oil change. Synthetic because the turbo runs so hot and spins so fast that I think (no science, just gut feel and mechanical experience) synthetic will flow better and cool better than regular oil in all temperatures.
@fishycomics

We all own cars that do not have oil remonders. our 1991 corolla. Also the Crv is with Gh Honda full synthetic Ow-20. old or new. we are wise to know when to change. our oils.
@pete9866
@pete9866 7 лет назад
Are we discussing a 1991 Corrolla or a 2017 CR-V? Actually, the recommended oil is not fully synthetic. The Owners manual says "• Genuine Honda Motor Oil • Premium-grade 0W-20 detergent oil with an API Certification Seal on the container." and "Synthetic oil You may also use synthetic motor oil if it is labeled with the API Certification Seal and is the specified viscosity grade."

@fishycomics
@fishycomics Год назад
The Orange Plastic, does not help at all, the metal criss cross is the better, now you do not need to take my word f or it but what the best Method is. if its difficult to see a paper fold it and then place on open and you see the actual oil stain and level

@@fishycomics - thanks for the reply I’ve tried that method too and although it does work to some extent it’s a little non-precise so to speak and hard to read sometimes as well. Too bad oil levels are just easier to measure either through instrumentation or having an overfill bolt that you just fill to when you fill up the car!! I actually have a precise amount of oil that I put in every time so I don’t even really need to check the level anymore when I change the oil for it’s always consistent

I would change out because you have 6 months on her, and seems you are very easy going on the V, 3500 mi. i for sure it is broken in already if asked, I changed my sis's out because I we have a Love/hate relationship I hate her because she got a crv, I love her because she's my sis. and honestly I am happy I did not get one (lol) and I take care of the car as it's mine, I get to driver her wahoo!. I change the Oil and filter, and rotate the tires, because the next schedule will be Oil. filter and tires. and then one after is oil only, I personally find this a sales gimmic this maint minder thing. that is my opinion.

FYI. There is no more break-in oil for vehicles. Break-in oil was in vehicles along time ago. You’re dealing with a 2017 why would you think that has break-in oil ? All these new vehicles come with synthetic oil from the factory. I recommend looking in your manual. I change my oil every 7500 even through it says every 10k. Also don’t you want to start the vehicle and look under to see if there’s any leaks before putting the cover on ?

I'll add another comment - instead of jacking the vehicle, I run the CRV up on a couple 2x10s. The 1.5 inch raise is enough for me to slide far enough under the front of the vehicle to reach all the removable pan fasteners. Another comment: had to go buy a oil filter removal tool - couldn't get enough purchase with my strap wrench to unscrew the filter - only $6 at Advanced Auto.

What is the reason for draining oil filter first before the drain plug?
@fishycomics
@fishycomics 6 лет назад
I did it because I wanted to do it that way for this video as well my other new Toyota corolla one? the plug is first or the filter,, both ways the oil drains exactly, comes out exactly. I found it easier to do the filter first, get it out of the way and may have given better air and drain flow during the change?. While the Oil is draining I can clean up the filter area and waste a little less time, on the car. All in all the Key word of my work is the Uncoventional way of doing things. If I do things piss poor then I will get scolded here. since I do a mighty fine job helping out, you'll see many people are grateful etc... I use my own vids as notes why you may see a few of the same oil changes and htey hit over timed a ton of comments and views, and that means the world to me I appreciate the excellent answer it is by far a top 5 question for this clip t hank you. I hoped I explained it clearly and as simple as it sounded No difference, pople may beg to differ?
