I have a full options 1.2 CVT model year 2015 driving in the Netherlands. Now after five years and 60.000 miles I can say, zero defects, not even a light bulb broke. Interior is holding up perfectly. No squeeks or rattles anywhere. Exterior has no rust at all. Original brake pads. No oil consumption I can measure, It needed 2 tyres and 6 wiper blades and the regular fluid changes. Got on average 50 mpg during that time. I love it and will keep it until it eventually collapses. That moment may be very far off.
Only think I had to do was to get my CVT flushes from a Mitsubishi dealer, oil change and two of my back tail lights but I think LED replacements for the back are nice.
stop telling every one. if every one figures out that Mitsubishi has been quietly building the worlds best car for the last 10 years the price might go up.. keep it secrete tell every one it's awful. remember what happened when word got out about the metro? how before every one knew you could get a car that never brakes and crushes hybrids for under 500 bucks? stop telling the truth.
um, I really think u had better do your research regarding how this car has failed road safety/crash tests.....just that engine noise is beyond frightening. If you consider this "the world's best car" you must have been living on Mars sir....suggest you test drive a GOOD small car...any GOOD small car such as a Honda Civic, Keo Forte or Soul, Toyota Corolla, Honda Fit..........
@@barbarajanesowak882 Lady you should do your research. The IIHS gave the Mirage an overall good safety score with it only performing poorly in the small frontal overlap test. A test that is new and is a weakness for almost all subcompacts.
@@kylemas2005 there is no way I' feel safe driving that on a highway, sorry...the engine so lacks power and when you push for power it sounds scary as if it will blow up...the steering totally lacks control/stability and feedback, the car feels wild on the road and is so cheaply made, you can in some models see nails sticking out. sorry.....i have seen and driven in this car. i do plenty of research, you have no idea how prepared I am when I purchase a vehicle. Mits products are now rated very poorly, you can research various accredited sites to see this....Nissan quailty has also fallen way down. There are far safer and superior options used, such as as civic , corolla, forte, soul, etc.....you'd get more stability, and a much safer ride esp. on highwaysss or in winter. While plenty of people are on tight budgets in this terrible time including yours truly, i think the mirage would be the last possible choice for a new vehicle, considering the options that abound.

Also there are no nails in a Mirage lol. I think you mean exposed screws. Thats an aesthetics issue not a safety one. The cars you recommend costs upwards of 50% more. My 2017 G4 Mirage sedan was $11k out the door price, a Corolla is double that. Are there cons to the Mirage? Sure. The off the line speed is slow maybe taking you an extra, GASP* 4 seconds to get to 45 mph and race to the next stop light. The interior is louder than most other cars on the highway, but I can still hear my podcasts just fine. This is solid, reliable a to b transportation that JD Power, an organization that you obviously respect, just placed Mitsubishi 6th in reliability in 2020 over 25 other manufacturers.
Great review. I've been following Mitsu since I owned a Spyder convertible awd turbo. That was a super car. Mitsu's are very underrated and CR hates on them for some reason. Please do a year by year follow up! If my wife forces us to move back to wackofornia, I will get one of these to offset the $2.00 gal higher gas prices.
If you want your new cars to last forever here are a few tips I've learned over the years. Make sure you always keep the entire underside of the car coated with something oil based. Even if you don't get salt on your roads, it will prevent rusting. Run full synthetic oil and use an oversized filter if you can. Install a secondary 1 micron oil filter and filter magnets to keep all of that junk out. Install a oil catch can to prevent vapors from mucking up your intake. Use a block heater in the winter. If you're up for it, get a engine preoiler system installed. This will lubricate the entire engine up to pressure before you start the car. That is when most of your engine wear occurs, as it only takes 30 minutes for all the oil to drain out of bearings.
Thanks for your awesome 3 part review. I owned a 2014 ES CVT in Kiwi Green for 4yrs. It was a great little econobox that made up for its to-be-expected noise and lack of power with great MPGs (40mpg city for me) and some very nice creature comforts that I genuinely appreciated, such as auto climate control and speed sensitive wipers. Both great features here in Florida. I took it on a few 800 mile round trips. It may be a bit loud and slow, but I found it tolerable and it cruises very nicely for what it is. I miss that car and I'm toying with the idea of buying a new 2018 GT hatch. In my area, they're selling the GT for about $12k, versus $10,500 for SE. Not sure the fancier alloys and projector HID headlights are worth justifying the extra $1500, but man it looks good with those upgrades. Plus, they seem to be more rare.
Heated seats! too (that is the best part). I just wish they kept the manual option on the SE. Why a "GT" name would include a CVT standard? i don't get it? Should have called it "LX".
I wouldn't mind buying one of these a few years used for a commuter car. Great for inching along in traffic where you don't need tons of power. They sell for 5,000 dollars after 3-4 years used.
I had a geo metro some time ago and really loved the simplicity of that car, took me anywhere for 11 years. I have been looking for another 3 cylinder car and decided on this one. Been viewing all the you tube reviews and I must say yours is the best review I have seen
Viewed all three parts of your incredibly interesting and unbiased review of the ES. Great! I compliment you and wish you well with these little critter vehicles. I'm VERY tempted to go with the '18 GT hatch version, but I only wish Mitsu offered a sunroof option. I can have one installed aftermarket, or maybe even through a Mitsu dealer's service department, but I speak for myself on that. I subscribed to your channel and hope you decide to make followup reviews of this vehicle as time rolls by. Keep us posted, please! Looking forward...Peace...
Mr M Follow up? Looking forward to that. Btw: from what I've been reading online, doing research, installing sn aftermarket power sunroof isn't a good idea. sigh... I have no idea, though, if it's worth it. ♐
Believe it or not, these are one of the best cars you can buy for....depreciation! Buy one new for $13,000, drive it for five years, put on 125,000 miles, and sell it for $4,000-$5,000. Rinse and repeat!
That was always in the back of my head while driving my kids around in traffic. Had one more and the mirage had to go. In a 21 Corolla now. Not a lot less mileage but a much safer feeling car.
I have the mitsubishi mirage, only that it's a 2015 model, released in 2016. Had it for about 4 years and counting and the car is still good. Very efficient and I love it. Wish I could show you a picture of my car :)
I own a 2015 CVT with all the options (except infotainment screen as I find that unreliable, outdating content fast and unsafe). I love the car for what it is. A cheap workhorse that does what it is supposed to do. Bring me from A to B in relative comfort, reliably and cheaply. I also drove 500 miles in one day in it partly in bad weather.. I was tired after that, but by no means exhausted.
I just learned about these things a few days ago, and though I'm a Subaru nut I'm pretty tempted. Lots of people, including you get them for $10K or even less. Seems that most dealerships price them that way, or at least it doesn't take a lot of haggling? Willing to bet they just want them out since most people in the US aren't shopping for this kind of car. Thanks for your review!
Questions: How does the Mirage handle on snow/icy roads/streets? Is maintenance inexpensive at a Mitsu dealer? Has maintenance been expensive for you? If you would take a moment to reply I sure would appreciate it. Thanks...♐
AladdinSaneNYC handles great in the snow! It has very thin tires and it's not heavy so it gets going fine and if you were to slide it stops sliding quickly as it is light weight plus has traction and stability control. I do my own general maintenance so I have not had it to a dealer yet.
Just drove 1,000 miles road trip to Nashville in my 2018 Mirage. Now have 52,000 miles on this buggy. Gas in Indiana was $2.05/gal. Its like driving for free. Ultra reliable car.... great CVT. Doug DeMuro is an a-hole!
@@pryme2013 I called ahead and made sure the Lane Auto Museum would be open. I didn't see the tornado damage on the route the GPS took me. The tornado path was probably 1 mile north of where I was!
i wish you would describe its ride quality over rough pavement. i've heard people say it is bumpy, while other reviewers said it rode smoothly over the bumpy stuff.
It actually rides pretty smooth over bumpy roads! Especially for a small economy car. It's due to its roots in other areas of the world with terrible roads. It's pretty softly sprung. Due to it's very light weight though it gets pushed around in high cross winds.
@@pryme2013 thank you, that helps me make a decision, where i live in mason county washington, the roads are cratered in a way that made your roads look glass-smooth in comparison. a late model chevy impala i test-drove, bucked and bounced and rattled over those glorified goat paths, which was discouraging. my 1997 honda crv was built to handle them but it is getting up in years.

Yeah I have the SE models with manuals which were still available in 2017. They discontinued the manual in the SE in 2018 though. Yeah a six speed would be nice to get the rpms a bit lower on the freeway.
@@alansmilealot when you have AC on high it very slightly changes the shift and you sometimes feel a slight surging feeling at 65+ mph with ac cranked.
@@pryme2013 im thinking about getting one or a used 2011 Mazda 3, I want a little more pull for my daily but the gas mileage does seem pretty good on top of the 10yr/100k warranty. I don't think Android auto is on the es which I do want. Idk I have been repairing my 94 Corolla myself but new parts are weak in quality and more costly than they should be.
Thanks for the videos. They are great and are just what I needed to address my one concern about a Mirage; and that is it's tractability on the road that has really been the only consumer sore spot that I've found from actual drivers/owners, because I'd be driving one much like the areas you're driving in the videos; mostly along state routes; two lane and four lane, more hilly than your area, with speed limits from 45-65. And so, for me, it would be less of a city car than it would be a rural commuter car, but it would put in some city miles, as I live smack in the middle between one town of 32,000 and another town of 4,000; and I work in town of 1,500 in which I drive only through the town of 4,000 to get there, and other than that, it is a very rural commute. It's 58 miles round trip. And I've been thinking that I could sell my near-valueless 2007 Saturn Aura (which is a great car by the way; I just don't like driving automatics and I don't need a mid sized sedan these days), and then get a 2017 Mirage. It's going to be at least a year though. I've got to not only get the Aura sold, but also a 2015 Fiat 500 6-speed automatic paid off that my wife just bought that we owe just over $3,000 on. I've also got a pickup truck, and I'm in year three of that loan, and I'm way ahead on payments, but there is a poison pill for paying it off more than 24 months early. I'm down to around $8,000 loan balance on the truck. So I've got a regular cab pickup; sort of a basic, but with a little 2.7L V6 Ecoboost engine that gets 24 mpg; and a two-door tiny hatchback that's so far getting around 36 mpg versus a rating of 33 highway, and I really, really want a 4-door tiny hatchback manual shift, great fuel miser as my next car. You could say I've got small car fever, but we're going to need four doors, as we have pets. And what really gave me the fever was finding out how cheaply I could get one of these cars through the shopping experience of finding that neat little Fiat 500. Technically, the Mirage is the highest mpg, non-hybrid in our market, but that's using the city and combined ratings and not looking at the top number that can be had looking at all three ratings. If you include all three ratings, looking for the top non hybrid score, the Chevrolet Cruze 1.6L four cylinder diesel, compact sedan; 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic both come in at 52 for the highway, and it's rating is also likely underrated, but it's also got a hybrid-like price. So with money as no object, and if one were to exempt the reliability worries of a modern diesel, and if one were to exempt the extra service and maintenance costs and fuel costs of a diesel, and if one were to exempt the extra hassle and cost of diesel exhaust fluid, then for my purposes, the Cruze diesel is the number one fuel miser available today. But the Mirage is so far ahead on value that it's not even close, though the real-world mpg is close. The one great thing that makes the diesel so appealing though, besides it's great mpg, is that it has over 230 ft-lb torque at 2000 RPM, but it's price difference and all the other factors does not make up the difference between the choices, and I really don't need or want a sedan, so the Cruze is definitely out. My dream car then is a used Ford Fiesta with the 1.0L Ecoboost, but it too is just way too costly for a three-to-four year old car as compared to a Mirage or a Versa or another Fiat 500. I'm admittedly biased against anything Nissan, and another 2-door hatchback won't work, so Mirage is the car I will eventually get. As I sit here today, April 6, 2018; Ford and GM just announced yesterday that they plan to end (at least for now) their subcompact model production for North American sales. This means, if I understand the announcement correctly, there will be no more Spark; no more Sonic; and no more Fiesta in the U.S. and Canada from 2019 forward. How this will affect values in this segment, I'm not sure, but as a wannabe buyer into this segment for a 1-4 yr old subcompact with a manual transmission for cheap, I'm hoping it doesn't make them more collectible as they go away; because it is also notable that the EPA just announced the day-before-yesterday that they plan on rolling back the slated fuel economy standards, and they are also suing to make the California ARB's plan to count CO2 as a pollutant, illegal. And so, when you couple very low sales of subcompacts in this country the last few years with the need to no longer have low-cost, high mpg cars due to a roll back on some very tough standards coming up by 2022 and low gas prices; then I think two of the big three are signaling to the others, that it's time to go back to a market without city cars. It's ironic to some extent, because I've started seeing more and more new Spark's around town where there is a local Chevy dealership, which is the only new car dealership in my nearby town. I just recently got subcompact fever; as my wife bought a Fiat 500 Pop. It's built by Chrysler in Mexico. It is 3 1/2 yrs old; it's rated 12th out of 15 subcompacts; and so value is low for a poorly-rated car, in a poorly-rated category. This just caused an aha moment for me. I started looking at other subcompacts, particularly ones with low resale value, and I started looking at the Mirage hatchback. It's rated 15th out of 15, but I started looking specifically at the WHY, and that's where it got real interesting, because I started seeing this dichotomy between professional reviews and consumer reviews; and now this review has settled it all for me. If I can't find a three to four year old Fiesta with the 1.0L Ecoboost at a good, acceptable price (which I don't think I will), then the Mirage 5 speed is the car for me, but that will also be a tough find.
Mr M , I just drove mine from Greer, SC to West Tennessee, and then on out to Denver Colorado a couple weeks ago, I started a new job. Including all running around and the trip, I spent $127 on gas for an 1,800 miles trip @ $2.389 per gallon.. had to fight some seriously high winds in Western Kansas and into Colorado, and at one point, floored it and held it there for about 5 minutes... 110 mph was all she had with that wind and a bunch of gear in the back.. averaged about 33 mpg altogether averaging above 75 mph for over 1,000 miles... It held up great and never complained...

Tony coffee that could be a problem then. The car does not accelerate super fast and I would not be comfortable driving this for extended periods at that speed. I drive 65-70 as that is the speed limit and wouldn’t want to run it past that as it’s revving pretty high already. It’s at like 3,500 at 70 with the manual. The cvt turns slower though I’ve heard
Mr M that's kinda the same reas9n why I didn't get the Nissan versa. The highways I drive the limit is 60-70 , but some are 85.... I have no idea why that don't have a 6th gear or even a taller 5th..
Thanks for a great review. I'm taking delivery of a 2020 to take some of the miles off of my WRX. I drove one back in 2016 and settled on a Chevrolet Spark: a car that I never really loved. I liked the looks of it but it's 5 speed gearing was REALLY tall in first and second gear and while it was reliable, it was never inspiring and I really had to baby it to get anywhere near 40 mpg. Well done, I hope that you are still enjoying you Mirage, and I look forward to an update about maintenance, and your impressions after 3 years re: oil changes, effects of Fluid Film on keeping rust away, etc. Best to you!

joe b Yeah I recommend driving a 5spd. I drove only a cvt locally before setting up a deal on the 5spds k owing I'd like them, and I did. Good luck with your purchase
Manual is definitely the way to go for any of these small econo cars. Too bad I HATE driving manual (find it tedious) and I also sit in heavy traffic most of the day. Both of those mean I only buy automatics and I try to shy away from CVTs, they just aren't robust and will fail much sooner than a normal automatic would. Wish they just offered a 4-speed automatic.
At what speed does your fuel economy drop off? It seems like you do a lot of 2 laners (so do I) but a commute for me would involve some 4 lane 70-75 mph. Is that kind of speed possible? How much does fuel economy suffer at that speed?
Mr M I don't understand why so many hate on this vehicle. If they don't dig it then why voice so much negativity. Wow, I am just amazed at the dozens upon dozens of naysayers. ♐
I am kind of curious, to start, I'm a car hauler and I see these as base models at some of the rail yards, and I'm wondering if they offer other options for starters, a dome light for the back seat, floor lighting, and if its possible to get things like a bigger alternator, and if the Rockford Fosgate system is a dealer installed option
Hi, the dome light is right in the middle and the car is small so it lights up the back too. No floor lighting. One engine choice in the U.S. the 1.2L 3cyl. No reason for a larger alternator in a small eco car. The features available in these cars a impressive especially for the price. You can get them new for 9-11k all day. Not sure about the Rockford. Check out mirage forum for more answers, some people have that stereo.
Update: I bought a 2019 Mirage ES hatch in Mercury Grey Metallic with the 5 speed last Monday, February 25th, 2019 in Mesquite, Texas. Nice peppy little car, it will handle 75-90 mph quite well. The Mitsubishi all weather mats do not cover the dead pedal so I only use the OEM Mitsubishi all weather ones in the back seat and I ordered the weather tech floor liners that cover everything clean up under the pedals and wow were they worth it. After 1 year they look brand new each time you clean them. They run about $125.00 for the 2 front on ebay or amazon. Oh and yea I am kind of a fanatic with the accessories lol and Mitsubishi offers plenty of them. I think the Mitsubishi roof racks give the Mirage a sporty utilitarian look its neat. An orange one at the dealer had them installed and was sharp!
If you look under the Driver and passenger seat there is a vent, when you have it on heat or AC for your feet that blows cool or hot air for the passengers. Just a little tidbit that the car offers.
Yeah it's part of the HVAC, I remeber Doug DeMuro talking about it and he had no idea what it was other than it looked cheap and "out of place". How he qualifies to review these cars and with such a large audience without knowing these things is staggering.. I don't even drive regularly and I knew that it was for HVAC.
Only one major big downside to this car. It's safety. The worst car you can buy brand new safety wise. Not because of it's size, but because of it's safety structure, they didn't put as much money as they do with more expensive cars they sell because their margins are lower on these lower volume cars. You don't want to get into an accident in this car above 20 MPH. It's rated as the most fatal car in many cities. I've seen articles where the car didn't have much damage at all and the person passed. www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/Mitsubishi/mirage-4-door-hatchback/2015 www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/mitsubishi/mirage-4-door-hatchback/2020
Yeah it's a tiny car so it will not be as safe overall but it only does terrible in the small overlap test which the majority of cars don't do great in. So dont hit an immovable steel wall on just the edge of your car.
@@pryme2013 Yea, several older cars don't do well in small overlap, but a majority of brand new cars today do very well in it, so It would be a poor decision to get a brand new mirage over a brand new of any other car when you can get a similar priced car that does well in small overlap, but not everyone necessarily cares about safety when they buy a car, so there's that. The good part is that they are tightening regulations on mini/subompact cars safety wise, so Mitsubishi is going to have to greatly improve it's safety or they'll be forced to stop producing it in the US. The last gen nissan versa also didn't perform well, but this new gen 2020/21 versa got 5 stars in most categories and performed well in small overlap, and gets 45-50 MPG, and costs $11,500 for the manual, so there is hope the mirage will improve.
One dealer, the one that is a 3 hr drive for a Mirage, told me it can be added 3rd party. Not sure it would be the same switch as on the G4 SE standard. The salesman said he will ask. The car had been sitting for months. So the battery was not just in need of a recharge, it was dead. We took it out and the lights flickered the whole drive.
I have a 2015 hatchback and have had it for about four to four ad a half years and have loved it. I have even driven from Fort Worth Texas to San Francisco Ca and back with no problems at all. Oil changes and Break pads are all that I have Had to do. Over all I love mine and it's a basic 2015 model.
djkenny Hi Dj, I like almost everything. I wish the shifting was a little smoother as it moves through the gears, especially more noticeable as the weather has started to get colder. I have always wished the fog lights had the ability to just stay on vs having to turn them on every time you turn the headlights on, but overall very happy with the mirage as a good city car.
What is your thoughts on a yearly to bi yearly big road trip with that car? Like OR to CA, 700 miles each way... or all the way another 600+ miles from the bay to San Diego style? 2 kids in the back...
djkenny you could do that no problem. It would be very economical too. Would it be the most comfortable and quiet vehicle to take? Not a chance. But you have to ask yourself something. How often do you do those long drives? If it's a once a year thing you could even rent a minivan or something and keep the miles off your own car and have a more enjoyable family road trip.
Kinda funny.. It is the near 2nd reason I want a reliable new car. I plan a trip once a year to Loreto Baja MX. With 2 kids, the flights from my city would be cost prohibitive, but I could drive to San Diego for about $130 in gas and wall the bboarder bridge to $150 tickets. Flying to and from where I live is $600+ each way, each person. Or, $2000+ every year. Instead of maybe $1000 between tickets and food doing the road trip.
djkenny baja would be cool I've been to Encinitas and TJ but that's it haha. If economy is your main goal the mirage is hard to beat. My last city car was a 08 Elantra and I enjoy this car more. And it easily beats the Elantra in mileage.
