I just wanted to say that I still have this system in my truck and am happy with it. It was over a month when I filmed this. There are other options slowly approaching for 2020 and if more Titan folks started showing interest then the companies would follow. Maybe 2020 I can field test a couple other products for a better review or opinion. As for now, would I buy a Rhino-Rack system still? Yes. Because if I needed something like this for storage, they’re still the only ones in 2019 that have something.
Hey Mate, looks like the underbar strip wasn't installed at the either side of the leg. Its a thin plastic strip with measurements on it. Cut it to size and fill the gaps under the bar. That whistle comes from that hole/s not being filled. At 8:11 it appears it hasn't been fit. When you buy the bars, the strips are inside the crossbar itself, with the vortex rubber for the top.
Just installed the same Rhino Rack yesterday and the exact same whistling is driving me crazy. I've had various Thule bars (in different shapes) in my other vehicles and no whistling ever.
Hi Chad, I feel your frustration! Last year while traveling to Idaho, I bagged my first pheasant. With my 2013 Tacoma! Took out front grill, horn and ac condenser. After I had the damage repaired, I picked up a high-pitched whine that was horrible. 2 Toyota dealerships, one tire shop and a shock shop all failed to diagnose. I had replaced my trashed OEM grill with a nice billet grill and that was the culprit (but that took months to determine). Finally, thanks to my camp buddys' assistance, I had to place a sheet of perforated stainless behind the new billet grill to get the whine to disappear. Sure felt good when the whine (as well as my whining!) stopped. Glad you got it fixed!
I have an 18 Pro 4x and I thank you for being a guinea pig for us 2nd gen Titan owners lol. I really want to do a build like this someday so seeing this information out especially on RU-vid is legit! So thanks again and I look forward to watching more videos!
Andy .... Thanks for watching and commenting. I do like this rack system and I think it’s a very good system but with a couple other companies coming out with “Prinsu-style” systems for 2020 and that Rhino-Rack has their platform system, those may be better options. I don’t know the costs though.
Just bought a Jeep with a roof rack that has this exact whistle swear it’s driving me crazy thought it might’ve been the cabin air filter nope this is the exact whistle lol thanks I’m trying this tomorrow!
Thanks for this information. I have the same problem with my 16 Yukon XL. I have the 3 bar vortex system $ man The Whistle after 40mph. I’m going to try this. Just sucks when you spend $800 for a 3 bar system and have to tape it. Other than this i love the rack.
It's funny that you said you couldnt find anything about the whistling initially. I was searching just for roof racks for my Titan and found a video demonstrating this same rack. The guy showed how the ends come off each side of the rack where the track is visible. There is a rubber insert there and he says if you put anything in the track you need to cut the rubber to fill the gaps or it will whistle. This makes me believe the whistle comes from the gap and if you are getting the rack 2nd hand its likely the rubber insert intended for the gap is missing.
I am glad you fixed it. However, I disagree with your theory, I also have the same rack. And yes I did have the same whistle. Think of how an actual whistle works....you blow air across an edge. The edge cuts the air causing the whistle. The whistle you were hearing was not caused by the air flowing across the rear of the bar, it was caused by the air traveling across the track /groove and that edge. The reason it stopped when you placed your hand at the rear of the rack is because you disrupted the flow of air across the edge. I fixed mine by simply placing a 1" wide strip of black gorilla tape over the groove, top and bottom. NO tube was used! I agree that that after spending $450 on a load bar system, we as consumers should not have to do this. A simple fix by #RhinoRack would be to include long strips of the rubber filler strips to close off the entire groove allowing the consumer to cut where needed to attach accessories. Hey Chad, On our work trucks the extension ladders also create the whisle from the end of the steps as the wind pass over the hole. I bit backing rod into the hole and it stopped. Hope they find a better fix or the real problems.
Great video! Very tactful, and well presented. You're doing well trying to film in manual on your camera! Its definitely not an easy thing, and takes constant adjustments. A lot of people don't have the patience for it.
Like a rattle you can’t find well no deers will run in front of ya check molding around windshield on top ? Just a thought hope you figure it out as always be safe
I haven't had any road noises since getting the rubber strips on my Rhino-Rack. As for the Guana RTT, I don't hear any noises. Wife and kids agreed because we discussed it on our road trips. Now, I haven't driven the truck with just the basket. I do have the Guana RTT up there and maybe that helps. Can't say for sure though.
