I got one of these last friday. you're right about it being fast. Let the brakes off on a descent and you're flying! Definitely more of a plow machine compared to the stumpy but for steep rocky stuff it offers heaps of confidence.
Guys, we miss you!!!!! Thought you were going to be making millions of videos this summer with the good weather. Give us something, hehehe ;) it doesn't have to be demos of new bikes, just watching you ride is freaking great :)
do, I almost quit RU-vid at the end of spring... I've been back out filming with 6 videos already filmed just waiting to be edited and uploaded. Glad to be back at it and will start uploaded at least 2 videos a month. Thanks for the support!
Great review. Having owned a carbon enduro 29er for a 2 years, I can safley say that it is super efficient at going fast over rough ground. It's reasonable nimble, yeah, doesn't pedal all that well (fsr), but it's not bad. The problem with it being efficient at dumbing down the rough ground is that, after a while, it seams a little boring and not that involving. It's a brilliant race bike where times are important, but after riding the hightower, I descided that it was a better bike for all day epic rides. Pedals really well and is more nimble/direct/involving but still fast.
Hi man, love your videos. It'll be great if you could post an instructing video on riding techniques and how to fall. I personally crashes two days ago and had almost all my body x-rayed because I hit the breaks the wrong way, ending up flipping in the air and crashing on my elbow and shoulder.
Interesting I've got one of these! 29er Ali frame ! Total weapon , comfortable at nearly 50 mph ! Almost tempted to get the sworks jobby ! Tough call? Will be uploading a review soon on it!
MTB yumyum I'll be up there pioneer week, taking my oldest daughter (she races for her HS) to tour UofU and BYU. Maybe we catch a ride 👍 you can try out her Top Fuel :)
You stated that you set up your air pressure as your weight / 7 for the front and your weight / 7 - 2 psi. I find that very interesting. I have been wondering and playing with PSI settings on my bike. Can you explain the reason for that equation? I assume wight is in how much you weigh with all gear on.
Rody, great question man! Yes it is assuming the weight with all the gear. Stans has suggested running your rear wheel at your weight/7 + 2 and the Front tire your weight/7. I have found my sweet spot with just lots of testing. I started with what they recommend and went with more psi and then tried it with less and just found that I like it with -2 in the fron and weight/7 in the rear. Again it's just testing it and finding what you like.
Hey fellas, I was watching the video with Jason ripping most of the time on his HT, can you do another one on the HT lookback after a few months of riding? You both ripped!
There is no doubt that the wheelset will help but again something with a little less travel, slightly different geometry and lighter bike is going to be a better ride up hill. If your wanting to do some all day rides this bike is going to push your limits for sure.
I have been watching your reviews on various mtn bikes . I am looking for a full suspension bike that is great on the climbs ~ I have a 2006 Santa Cruz Nomad, which has been a great bike, but I need something lighter and that I can climb better with ~ I was looking at a couple of 29ers , such as the Yeti 5.5 sb 2017 which I test rode in Moab and I liked it , wanted to test ride the Ibis Ripley LS 2017 but there are no shops that carry it ~ I see you rate the Rocky Mtn element as a great climber? Would you say that it is the best bike you have ridden for climbing? I think you liked the Ibis Mojo HD for climbing too? I ride in the central jersey and Philly area. Look forward to your feedback?
Coming from a Nomad to something like the Element would be drastically different. If it's a 29er you're after and want something that climbs well and will still maintain that plush feel you're used to, I would look at the Santa Cruz Hightower or Hightower LT. Both climb better than your Nomad and will likely both descent better as well. Good luck!
Nice ride. I'm waiting for mine 2017 comp 29/6fattie in green color (basic model), already have plans to switch to 40mm stem* and Magic Mary 2.35 on front and High Roller 2.2 on rear wheel for muddy/rocky terrain, might replace the dropper post to save some weight and hope the 28/42 gear ratio will be helpful on steep climbs. What exactly is the reason it's not a good climber? Maybe a shorter stem will make it even a worse climber?
Yeah, part of the problems is how heavy this bike is but it has super heavy tires that just didnt roll well... the geometry is just more focused on the descents and not the climbs.
it climbs, let say well tecnically, and if you can phisically hold, really good fit, the problem is that for long rides 4 hours or 5 after cumulating tonnes of feet of climbing you feel that you can not stand it longer.. i find as well that is not a very agile bike at low speed....but for fast descending, roots, rocks, jumps and shorter trips it is really a bomb. so it really comes to your kind of tracks and trips.
I just got this exact bike! I did cancel my stumpy order to go with it based on the new 2017 seat tube angle and geo in general. I know a Stumpy would have been possibly a better all around mountain bike but I felt my strong thick bull legs with mucho endurance can handle climbs with it. Did a 3 mile down then climb back up other day and I'm way out of shape. I agree its stupid fast!
Hi Jason. I'm planning a business trip to Salt Lake City and plan to bring along my rig. If you want to do a review on an Evil Following, you can ride mine! Love your channel!!! Thanks for all the hard work you do my friend!! Bill
Hey Jason, I should be there in the next 2-3 weeks! I'll keep you posted! Thanks again for all your hard work. I've watched all your videos...several times :) Cheers, Bill
hi, incredible videos and advices.. I have an enduro 29 comp 2017 and i am finding really difficult the 4 hours enduro ridings with a lot of steep climbing and steep descents, here in spain ( north in the Basque Country and pyrenees) ...at the end i feel it is too heavy.... you have demoed the ripmo and the 2019 stumpjumper....which one would you choose? would i find a real difference?. any other 29 ..or sugestion?
At the enduro comp price point pretty much everything is going to be about the same weight. If it feels too "heavy" go with a carbon frame and or wheels
MTB yumyum do you think the seat tube angle on Hightower will be getting steeper on next years model? Also do you think bb is too low? I hated my 2012 stumpjumper 29 for that reason constant pedal strikes!
Funny, I had a 2012 Stumpjumper back in 2012... stupid low BB and got a lot of pedal strikes. The just redid the Hightower and really dont thin Santa Cruz will change anything on this bike for another 2 years... that said, I rarely got pedal strikes on my Hightower... like almost never. I think the bike is excent just how it is! Also, the Hightower is 30% off right now at Competitive Cyclist... here's a link: bit.ly/2lY2uDl
MTB yumyum it seems that Parker really liked the enduro. But, seems like you weren’t a fan. I have the same bike and am selling to get either a bronson or transition patrol. Do you have an opinion on either of those compared to the enduro?
If you get a sec checkout my channel. I ride Northeastern Utah, but have some other areas coming up at the end of the month. I'm no Nate Hills but I ride some sweet trails.
