Since 1992, Subaru has been injecting its rally heritage into the WRX and dropping grin-inspiring goodness into a street legal, dare I say practical, package. Here's our family friendly look at the WRX.

Great review, nice to see a different perspective on reviewing a vehicle like this. And I would totally agree that I would love to see this in a hatchback again.

As a family man and owner of my second WRX (2012 then 2015), and I think the steering wheel, seats, manual transmission, and handling are the big highlights. I've been getting very respectable MPG; 29 combined on average with some spirited driving. The only drawback in my opinion is the noisy cabin. I highly recommend the new WRX for a family friendly sports car.

psychofunksoldier02 the only thing holding me back from the WRX is the cabin noise, is it really that bad? I'm coming from a GTI coincidentally enough...
@FamilyWheels

Yes, it's really quite noisy - as proven by our decibel reader test

i drive the CVT because i hit heavy traffic every day during my commute in rush hour. it's actually not as bad as people say it is. gives the car two different personalities - makes life easy when you're sitting in traffic and the paddle shifters are very responsive when in fun mode.

I too have a CVT and it is superb. Sport Sharp is 8 speed....sport is 6 speed. I is super, super fast shifting. It is just sublime....frankly for me after 20 years of sticks is "better'...that from a hard core guy who had a track car and can heel/toe. This is just really nice. Add traffic, it is super. :)

I've had an auto BMW 320xi for a few years. While I appreciate the eight speed auto (especially in traffic), I really miss a manual. Next car ... a manual!

Hope y’all don’t plan on modding your cars bc the cvt can’t hold any power without blowing up and most tuners don’t tune with the cvt.

You deserve more subs and views, by far the best objective car reviews on RU-vid. Appreciate your enthusiasm for manuals and honesty about the cars. Subarus are a little pricey for fit/finish and interior quality.

Nice review ! From a family use point of view, you need the Subaru Levorg in Canada, which is basically a WRX wagon. Myself and my family, we own a Levorg 1.6 DIT 170 hp here in Belgium, and we are enjoying it very much !

2 year old update, because I loved the video as I'm in the same spot. Wanted a fun car, have a small family, etc. I find the room in the passenger front seat is better on this car with a rear facing child seat than my wife's CX5, I love the steering wheel, it is noisy. Great watch. PS, I have a 2019 if that changes anything.

I have been impressed with the gas mileage with the WRX. I have a 2017 base model and in mixed driving I average 26.7mpg. I have owned the car for about 10 months.

W Scott how's the reliability?
@wscott9779
@wscott9779 7 лет назад
DoubleD 613 So far it has been great. Though I think they may have to issue a recall on the throw out bearing on the clutches. Makes Whirring sound when you first crank the car up after it sits for a while/overnight then it goes away. Only does it when it is really humid out (humid alot in FL). then once warmed up it goes away. This seems to be a common complaint.

Its quite reliable. I own the car for about 2 years, 38000 miles. Its on stage 2 since 1k Miles. So far no problem. Change oil every 5k Miles using Subaru oil and filter. No other cost.

I hate people that say the hatchback wrx is the more versatile car than the sedan wrx. I find that comment absolutely false because the sedan wrx trunk has a deeper design which initially means the sedan wrx could fit more objects. I know people are going to argue if you fold the rear seats down on a hatchback you could fit more objects than the sedan version can but that argument isn't absolutely true unless you stack the objects all the way up to the roof liner which will initially be dangerous for the driver due to the fact he/she can't see out of the rear window. Also if you were to fold the rear seats down that would mean you could only fit two people in the car now including yourself which would make the hatchback wrx a far less versatile car than the sedan wrx.

Kevin Lam Hi Kevin. For people with dogs or tall items like a chariot, the hatch is indispensable.

Have to agree with you FW. I grew up in Europe and we consider a hatchback to be the quintessential family car.

You also have to think of the opening of a hatch compared to the opening of a truck. Totally different and way more versatile with a hatch.

...sales on the hatch were less because Subaru asked for MORE money on them; not much, but more nonetheless; so, people naturally gravitated toward the cheaper option...

The hatchback body won't fit the new frame....I appreciate his candor, but it's not a great review, kind of incomplete. The frame isn't an Impreza frame. As an owner of the '16 Rex, I think he's right on in a couple of places. The car is a blast.

Hey guys! I'm from argentina. Here in my country, cars are way more expensive than in the US and prices are so distorted. That being said, I wanted to ask if you would get a Subaru WRX 2016 (we don't have the 2017), when its actually the same price as a BMW M140i or an Audi S3 or a Golf R (this one it's like 5k cheaper than the WRX). Whats your opinion??

From the side it reminds me of a BMW. I wish there was an option to go stealth with that hood scoop. I'd totally make it my daily driver and give unsuspecting road users a surprise when i zoom past them.

The hood scoop isn't just aesthetic. It also functions as an intake. But I hear what you're saying!

@davidst-laurent8294 7 лет назад
Hi Paul! Thanks again for another good car review. I had a WRX Sport-tech 2015 cvt for 1 year and a half before moving into the US. Like you said , with kid sat in front seat position no problem, but forget about traveling with a seat in rear facing position, even with the most compact car seat. The trunk space become smaller and more frustrating with the sport-tech model; subwoofer, speakers and wires are exposed and you really have to take care of it when you put big and thick luggages or large suitcase in the trunk. Finally there's the trunk release button ;) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WYJhXYXjofI.html Regards! NB. I've never regretted the comprimise of the CVT. This car is a winter beast!
@FamilyWheels
@FamilyWheels 7 лет назад
Thanks, David. The vid you posted mentions the proximity key. That's only an option on the Sport Tech in the WRX so perhaps there's a release function on the highest trim but there definitely wasn't one on our tester. Even read through the user manual to make sure.

Wow! 20% of buyers want a CVT for this car? I would never had guessed the percentage was that high, probably has to do with the changing generations and the death of the manual in general. I'm enjoying my brand new 2017 in manual and I'd NEVER go CVT.
