2017 VW Passat GTE Variant Plug-in Hybrid - Start-up & Test drive (POV)

Driving scenes of my VW Passat GTE from the driver's point of view (onboard video), recorded with a camcorder (installed on a tripod) and a stereo microphone.

- Automatic transmission: 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox
Due to the electric drive the Passat GTE is a very quiet and comfortable car. Driving makes a lot of fun, especially in town. The battery range is 30-40 km, in winter only 20-30 km because of the electric heating. Charging at home (230V/10A) takes up to 4 hours. On long trips the petrol engine consumes 1-2 liter (per 100 km) less than my old Audi A4 1.8 TFSI (see • 2013 Audi A4 (B8) Avan... ). The engine stops whenever the accelerator pedal is released, it never idles. Most of the braking energy is recuperated (not destroyed). The electric motor uses the gained energy for start-up and driving slow, i.e. whenever the petrol engine would be inefficient.

Not sure why this video has so many dislikes. It shows everything clearly etc. Good job! Although, I do have a question. How does the constant switching on and off of the engine affect its reliability? In a sense, the engine is cold, you drive in electric and require power. Engine wakes up from cold and supplies the power, isn't this bad for the engine? Same with turbo, does it circulate the oil in E mode?

My car isn't old enough (3.5 years) to say that the engine is reliable, but I haven't heared yet that the GTE's petrol engine is less reliable than other VW engines. But I've heared that the GTE's 1.4 TSI has some constructive modifications which makes it more robust. Additionally, the first time you switch to hybrid or GTE mode, the engine idles half a minute for warming up, before the clutch closes, so it doesn't supply power immediately. The only thing you should avoid is a kick-down with the cold engine, because it revs up immediately, even in E mode.

Nice video! Can you please explain me how A/C works after cold start with e-mode? Is the heating or cooling with A/C faster than heating or cooling with A/C after regular cold start on petrol? How much km is shorter autonomy with e-mode when you turn on A/C and drove all the time? Thanks in advance!

For cooling there is an electric compressor with 1.5 kW max. power (consumption). For heating there is an electric heating unit with 5 kW max. power, which is used only when the petrol engine is cold / off. The A/C takes about 5 minutes to warm up / cool down the cabin, no matter whether you start electric or on petrol. If A/C is on, the electric range can decrease by 30-50 % in the winter and 10-20 % in the summer (depending on driving speed etc.).

It mainly depends on your driving style. My overland consumption is 5...6 Liters/100km in hybrid mode (save battery, no highway). The slower, the less. Assuming that the battery is charged every day (7 kWh => 35...45 km e-mode, used for the slowest parts of the route), the resulting fuel consumption declines to 4 Liters/100km or less.

@@dragospahontu The overall consumption of the last 6 years is 3,4 Liter/100km plus 7,7 kWh/100km. The average fuel consumption in "battery save mode" is 5,7 Liter/100km. Average speed is 70 km/h (much country road), maximum speed mostly 130 km/h.

If you don't drive faster than 130 km/h, the fuel consumption is 5,5-6,0 liter per 100 km, so the range of the 55 liter tank is 900-1000 km. The battery expands the range by 30-40 km.

Mit diesem Auto bin ich so zufrieden wie seit Jahren nicht mehr: Da 9 von 10 Fahrten Kurzstrecken sind, kann ich meistens rein elektrisch fahren. Das leise Anfahren und Gleiten wirkt irgendwie entspannend, nichts brummt oder vibriert. Der 85-kW-E-Motor reagiert zügig auf Gasbefehle und erlaubt eine dynamische Fahrweise in der Stadt, ohne den Anwohnern durch Lärm oder Abgase auf den Keks zu gehen. Nur außerorts würde ich mir mehr elektrische Leistung (zum Überholen) wünschen, aber momentan gibt es nichts Besseres unter den Plug-In-Hybriden. Von den Schaltvorgängen des DSG bekommt man so gut wie nichts mit. Durch die hervorragende Laufkultur und das komfortable Fahrwerk (DCC) kommt ein erhabenes Fahrgefühl auf, wie bei einem S-Klasse-Mercedes. Meine Bedenken bzgl. der (Verarbeitungs-) Qualität des VW waren unbegründet, bis jetzt kein Knarzen, Klappern oder ähnliches. Die einzige Reklamation war ein defektes Kommunikationsmodul (für Remote-Funktionen), welches auf Garantie getauscht wurde. Jetzt läuft alles. Der Akku muss täglich geladen werden (im Winter 25-30 km Reichweite ohne Vorheizen), aber das tägliche An- und Abstöpseln stört mich nicht. Zur Tankstelle muss er nur noch selten. In den Tank gehen 55 Liter rein, das reicht für über 900 km. Obwohl der GTE relativ schwer ist, verbraucht er auf Langstrecken 1 bis 2 Liter weniger Benzin als mein alter Audi A4 1.8 TFSI, der rückblickend im direkten Vergleich ein brummiger Vibrator mit harter Federung war, also gefühlt 2 Klassen unter dem GTE, würde ich sagen. Die Investition hat sich wirklich gelohnt, und Stand heute würde ich den Passat genau so wieder kaufen. Wenn man die Vorzüge eines E-Motors kennengelernt hat, will man nie mehr zurück zur „alten“ Technik.

@@engldengerschorsch Bei mir wurde es dann ein Golf GTE der nun knapp über 4 Jahre alt ist und 92000km auf der Uhr hat. Bin noch begeistert wie am ersten Tag. Bei den jetzigen Spritpreisen sowieso. Meine 40l im Tank reichen etwa einen Monat. Da ich größtenteils nur zur Arbeit fahre von Memmingen nach BC sind das schon mal 1600-2000km für die 40l Benzin. Ich kann aber auch bei meinem Arbeitgeber laden und daheim lade ich auch jeden Tag. Ohne laden verhält er sich wie ein Benziner mit 660-700km Reichweite pro Tank bei humaner Fahrweise auf Langstrecke. Reichweite elektrisch ist bisher nach wie vor bei 35-40km im Sommer ohne Klimaanlage und Heizung.

Can You choose between using the regular motor, and the Electric motor? You dont have to charge it to makes it drive like a full eletrical car right?

Yes, you can select the motor (the driving mode) by pressing a button and you can select the E mode (electric drive) at any time you want, unless the battery is empty or the current speed is above 130 km/h. If the battery is empty and you don't have the possibility to charge the battery at home, you must select the charge mode to charge the battery while the petrol engine is running. If you drive 10 km in charge mode, then the battery range increases by round about 5 km. That means: At most one third of a long distance can be driven in E mode. But the fuel consumption increases to more than 10 liters per 100 km while charging the battery. 1 liter fuel is transformed to 3.0-3.2 kWh electricity, that is round about 35 % efficiency. For this reason you should use the generated electricity (the E mode) only in the city, where the efficiency of a petrol engine is much lower that 35 %.

It's a petrol plug in. You can charge the battery at home, but you can also charge while driving with petrol engine, like any hybrid car can.

Yes, it's possible to drive in GTE mode without ever charging, but I have no experience with fuel consumption in this situation. I guess that the consumption would be near to a 2.0 TSI Passat, which has less weight and complexity comparing to the GTE.

Hey guys, what happens when I start the car in the winter and I drive in E mode but then when going out of town I turn hybrid and the engine kicks in at speed for example 100km/h. Isnt the engine cold and doesnt it hurt it to start and rev to 3000rpm straight away ?

When it's cold and you switch to Hybrid mode, then the clutch keeps open and the engine idles half a minute. After warming up, the clutch closes and the engine begins working, so you have no problem. Additionally the GTE engine has special parts which are more robust than a standard 1.4 TSI engine. When it's cold, I would recommend to start the engine at begin (if you drive more than 20 km), because the electric heating reduces the battery range enormous. In Hybrid mode, the heat of the engine is used for warming up the car.

No, I don't, unless the battery is full, then charging isn't possible. Is the car breaking while in B mode? Is the state of charge increasing slowly while driving in charge mode?

While in B-mode (or when breaking) the graphics in the bigger screen (Energy flow view) is showing the flow back to the battery, but the number under Consumption menu is just showing --. I haven't tried the Charge mode. I will do that next time.

Fantastic. It really looks like VW is winning the catch up game. Interesting is still has a g/box, even in battery (ev) mode. The petrol engine will always need a g/box. I have to ask, when will they put a bigger battery in. One that can do at least 200 km. Good video. Hurry, I want to stick to German cars.

To reduce the costs and the required space, VW has placed a small, disk-shaped electric motor between the petrol engine and the 6 speed AT. So the gearbox is used even in E mode. This construction enables a dynamic acceleration (in E mode) at low speed by using the 1st gear, otherwise there's an effective E boost at high speed (GTE mode, 6st gear). The capacity of the battery will certainly grow in the next years, but 200 km is not realistic for a plug-in hybrid vehicle, where the combustion engine handles all long distances. But there are some electric vehicles with a range of 200 km and more, f.e. the e-Golf.

@@dragospahontu There have been no serious problems in the last 6 years. Engine and gearbox are still working fine, the capacity of the battery is more than 90%, there are no software problems so far (infotainment, navi etc.). Only the original break discs have a short lifetime, if they are rarely used.

@@ColorcircleLive Seeing your last comment is not too old, I am considering buying this car (used of course), with all inspections made by VW (service book available) and no reported issues, is it possible to know how good the battery life is still, can you check that via the menu from the car? The car I plan buying has 140thousand km currently. Thanks for your reply in advance.

@@polvorin15764 The battery capacity is not displayed in the menu. The only way to check this is a test drive with full battery and checking the range. Over the last 6.5 years, the electric range of my car has decreased marginally (~ -10 %), but normally I don't use the full capacity (the SOC stayed between 20 and 80 % most of the time), which should increase the lifetime.

Approximately 5000 km. There's no possibility to check the total engine-off kilometers of the car. For estimation I calculate the total fuel consumption, divided by the average consumption in hybrid mode (6 Liter/100 km) => engine-on kilometers.

Depending on the speed, the battery range normally is 30..40 km, in the winter only 20..30 km because of the electric heating (power up to 5 kW). You can drive some extra kilometers, if you preheat the car before starting (by programming a departure time). Air-conditioning before starting the car is also possible.

I don't know, maybe to warm up engine and battery faster. When it's cold, the performance of the electric drive is reduced, so warming up makes sense.

1:00 the battery level = 33 km 1:17 the battery level = 32 km 1:24 the battery level = 31 km So after 10 minutes of driving the battery level went from 33% to 13%. Its a great car but the battery capacity... (not yet). I will wait some years until the battery technology is a little better before i put a lot of money on those cars.

You can deactivate it. There is a control button at the dashboard. If you press it, then the display (plastic plate) is moving down, so you can't see it. If you press the button again, then the HUD is moving up as you can see in the video at 0:21 (start-up).

In EV the speed is limited to 135 km/h (real 130). Acceleration 0-130 takes about 20 seconds.

Yes. The GTE's "Hybrid" mode is a kind of battery hold mode: The electric drive is rarely used, and sometimes the battery is charged (while the petrol engine is running) to keep the battery level. In charge mode the petrol engine keeps running all the time, even if you stop the car, and the battery is charged continuously. If you drive 10 km in charge mode, then the battery range increases about 5 km, but the fuel consumption can exceed 10 liters per 100 km.

schönes auto aber wirklich sparsam is das ganze auch nich im hybrid modus, du schleichst für ein 7-8liter schnitt ziemlich durch die gegend. wenn ich jetzt mein E36 18is nehme mit 140ps der Bj92 is. Wenn ich die kiste echt Sportlich bewege dann hab ich meist 8,2 im Schnitt.

Der hohe Verbrauch liegt an den Steigungen am Anfang, an den 1841 kg Leergewicht, am kalten und nagelneuen Motor, und 1x habe ich ihn auch ein bisschen getreten. Auf einer längeren (Landstraßen-)Tour nimmt er erfahrungsgemäß 5,5 bis 6 Liter (bei leerem Akku), also rund 1-2 Liter weniger als mein alter A4 Avant 1.8 TFSI, den man von der Größe her eher mit deinem E36 vergleichen kann. Nur auf der Autobahn spart man absolut nichts. Dafür genieße ich die herrliche Ruhe im Auto innerorts (E-Mode).

Es kommt einfach immer aufs Fahrprofil an. Mit meinem Passat B6 (1.6 FSI) brauche ich im Schnitt auch nur 7,5 bis 8 Liter, allerdings fahre ich am Tag 2x eine Strecke von 10 KM. Hätte ich den GTE, könnte ich vermutlich auf meiner täglichen Strecke rein elektrisch fahren und würde überhaupt kein Sprit brauchen. Wenn man allerdings Langstrecken Fahrer ist, fährt man mit einem 2.0 TDI gerade auf der AB bei höheren Geschwindigkeiten immer noch sparsamer.

Yes, it's possible: Press the GTE button after starting the car, then the petrol engine is working most of the time, and the battery level maintains 50 %, so e-boost is available too.

The all season tires make a lot of noise, especially above 80 km/h, which is a problem for electric cars, where you don't hear the motor. But in principle the Passat is not louder that my old Audi A4 or a similar car.

@@ColorcircleLive bec of batteries car is heavier than normal 1.4 tsi passat, may be just may be they wiped out some sound insulation material from hybrid car to make it lightweight and that's why there is more tire and wind noise than normal 1.4 tsi car.

To be honest the quietness of electric cars is a myth..all you hear is the wind noise and rolling wheel noise, even with modern 2.0tdi you no longer hear engine working, nevermind petrol units, all you hear is just the wind noise, and road surface. So I wouldn't be able to tell you drive electric or quiet TDI. They only advantage is obviously no co2 emission, and reliability. But then your reach is poor in electrics.

​@@marcobrancorsini2479 It's not about the speed limit. It's about the fact that driving an electric car triggers a fear and a range anxiety to all drivers, making them drive like a 76 yrs old man. All I wish is that all electric car drivers to drive like they did 5 years ago, when they had petrol or diesel.

@@TheSweetVillain Oh don't you worry. This is a hybrid and I found the perfect way to recharge the battery while I'm going more than fast enough. I'm either at 40% throttle and 160km/h recharging the damn thing or at like 200 fucking flooring the shit out of it lmao
