The WTF ruleset is horrible. Allow punches to the head. Penalize falling down. Stop interrupting the bout every 6 seconds. Allow sweeps and throws. Allow elbows and knees. Allow people to spar with the skillset taught by TKD, not just a tiny subset of those skills.
@PieceOfCandyPS
@PieceOfCandyPS 6 лет назад
What the fuck are you on? And when did tkd teach you to throw, sweep, elbow and knee someone?? U basically wanna turn tkd in mma? I bet ur obese ass hasnt even stepped in to a ring before.
@fourhorsemenmechanix757
@fourhorsemenmechanix757 5 лет назад
@@PieceOfCandyPS I don't know what the fuck kind of pussy McDojo shit you've been learning but REAL Taekwondo contains punches, elbows, knees, sweeps,throws, wrist locks, intricate footwork, and devastating kicks. Traditional TKD has more in common with mma than it does with this leg fencing crap in the olympics.

It seems like the guys making the rules at wtf hate the side kick.
@Cephas44
@Cephas44 7 лет назад
Liquidcadmus the high usage of cut kicks/side kicks is the reason why wtf Tkd sparring is boring to the audience.
@AlexWongTKD
@AlexWongTKD 7 лет назад
Lol its more of the cut kick or front leg kicks where people hold them up and just fling their leg out for points basically, its aimed for trying to eliminate that happening so much
@Liquidcadmus
@Liquidcadmus 7 лет назад
I didnt see much use of the side kick or front kick in WTF matches. actually most ITF fighters traditionally criticized WTF for not using the side kick or linear kicks. The use of side kicks has become abused in ITF and open point sparring tournaments though. some matches nowadays are pretty much two people on their side stance trying to go in with side kicks. it can be pretty boring to watch, in the 90's it was different, fighters used a huge variety of kicks and punches, matches were really exciting to watch. I think that some fighters used the side kick really effectively and now most coaches are focusing only on trying to copy that style because they think it works for them. but I dont think forbidding certain techniques is good, and is a silly "solution" to making matches more fun to watch. competitors/fighters should just improve on counter measures to such tactics and diversify their arsenal of techniques. good competitors use more than just one or two tools.

I began TKD 1n the early 1980’s and fought national and international tournaments. We didn’t have Head guards, gloves, foot protectors and the hogoo was lined with bamboo, almost every session involved full contact elements to it. I trained alongside some pretty successful athletes over the years such as Kathy Walker (Now hook), Amanda Broadbent (bronze in Barcelona), Sarah Stevenson silver beining) and was trained by Master Sykes a former Olympic coach. I took a substantial amount of time out of TKD due to ill health, and to focus on my classroom career (teacher of mathematics, ICT, and physical education). Now after a lengthy absence I am back as a coach/instructor as I am far too old, out of shape and battered to strap on the hogoo now lol. Just pointing out a couple of things through this post.... (1) Taekwondo is a profound life experience through which lifelong friends are made (2) Taekwondo is most definitely a lifestyle (3) Taekwondo is very much an emotional support package in times of need, offering inner strength beyond measure (4) Taekwondo can be used to not only break bones and win tournaments and trophies but also to break down and transcend barriers be they Social, emotional, spiritual or cultural. I enjoy your vlog, it is informative, well produced and inciteful. Keep up the good work. Best wishes for the new year from the East Coast All Stars (uk).

I had a competition late March with the new rules, and I really enjoyed it. I think the new WTF rules are definitely a step in the right direction! Also, it really bothers me that taekwondo is classed as "only kicking." I agree with the people who suggest that punching should become a bigger part of TKD, but I also wish they'd understand that just because we don't punch in competitive sparring, doesn't mean us TKD practitioners don't know how to punch! Punching and blocking and numerous other hand techniques are a huge part of my training.
@AlexWongTKD
@AlexWongTKD 7 лет назад
Awesome, good to hear! And yeah I know what you mean TKD is more than what is shown in competition and sparring, I also train in Muay Thai as well so I can punch if I need to lol
@FernandoFerreiraLittleDragon
@FernandoFerreiraLittleDragon 7 лет назад
You can punch because you do Muay Thai? That just proves what they are saying, in TKD punch should be one important part of sparring. Sparring is the ultimate test to your skills, before reality... I am glad TKD has sparring, but it should be more complete, punches are still not definitevly settled, a headache to the rules makers...
@911Salvage
@911Salvage 7 лет назад
Taekwondo should allow leg grabs. That'll force players to deliver meaningful devastating kicks instead of playful ones.

Thanks for your views, Alex. Love your work. At my club, the sparrers are all madly working on ways to adjust and take full advantage of the new rules- especially coming out of clinch- eg push - trap arm - crescent, push - punch - jumping back-kick. We are also trying to break habits like the low-feints you describe. There is a lot of opportunity there, and I feel that overall, it's going to improve the sport. Having said all that, I am just a red-belt, and whilst I do compete where I can, I am by no means an expert here.

as a shorter guy, the new cut kick rule is great. there have been a few games where i had to go against taller opponent and all they did throughout the fight was holding up the cut kick as a shield to prevent me from getting close(basically blocked me from even raising my legs high enough to kick). it's an unfair advantage. of course there were ways around it, but it's just annoying when the whole 2 minutes if the fight, that's all he had to do to win the game. lol

wondering, can you push without following up? I havent seen anything specified here. Like if you push to make distance and see no opening, is that okay?
@AlexWongTKD
@AlexWongTKD 7 лет назад
From my understanding you can push as long as you aren't pushing your opponent out of bounds or while mid kick. But that part hasn't always been clear to me even at scrimmages I've been to it seems to change slightly. But pushing to make distance from my understanding to complete okay!
@kritisharma587

we have been told that pushing before kicking is allowed but only pushing and no kicking counts as a penalty even if it is not pushing out of the boundary line.

hi alex! im already 16 years old and im not really flexible, im planning to enroll in taekwondo this summer because i want to learn it, do you think its alright? even with my age and with my poor flexibility??
@xyfurion
@xyfurion 7 лет назад
Claude Loverez Definitely go ahead and join. I am a first Dan Black belt and still kinda stiff; much less flexible than I want to be. The way to increase flexibility is to stretch everyday until you feel some pain. Make sure to increase stretch length as you progress and feel less pain. Use a wall bar / railing to stretch your legs by putting your foot on it and stretching wide in a way that you would use to kick.
@seveneye7614
@seveneye7614 7 лет назад
Claude Loverez you'll become flexible with the time for sure, "just do it!"

Stretch every day, but first do a warm up. Do several exercises of your choice (but that includes legs, like jumping jacks or skipping rope, etc.) designed to get your heart beating faster and your muscles used to some work. Only then stretch. There are a couple of tricks to stretching. One is don't rush it. Do it while watching TV or something so it doesn't get too boring. I used to do it while watching another classes train. The trick is to relax, sink into the stretch to the point of discomfort, 'not' pain, stop and wait. You relax as much as possible and wait for the discomfort to go away. When the discomfort is gone, sink a little bit more into the stretch until the discomfort comes back. Stop, relax again as much as possible. When that discomfort goes away, move to stretch a different muscle group. Always stretch both sides equally. ALWAYS relax as much as you can whatever muscle group is being stretched. NEVER tighten up to resist the stretch. NEVER go to the point of pain. Absolutely NEVER let anyone else stretch you. They do not know your limits, they cannot feel your pain, and if you are relaxing so the stretch can take, if they push past your pain point they can damage you, VERY badly. If your school 'insists' that you have other people stretch you, find another school. I am deadly serious. Stretching to develop real flexibility takes a good half hour to do properly if stretching everything you should stretch. You will be amazed however at how easy it is to develop awesome kicking ability when you are super flexible. Stretch like I suggested most days of the week and inside of a year you will hardly recognize your body in terms of what you are capable of.

Rules can be important for fighting sports, to keep things safe, fair, etc.. Unfortunately I find these sorts of rules to run highly counter to the needs of self defense. Someone who trains so as to be effective in sport fighting is in many instances training some really bad habits when it comes to actual self defense. I suppose to some degree this can be countered simply by being 'really good' at your sport fighting, such that in a self defense scenario you are simply so badass that the handicaps you've saddled yourself with for sport, are simply overwhelmed by your awesome skill. I think for a lot of people though, they have to seriously consider what they are training for. If they are training to win fighting competitions, go all in on the sport rules and get badass. If their training is primarily for self defense, it might be wise to eschew a lot of the sport.

Under every MA video someone comes up with this "but in the street there are no rules" bla bla bla..."rules are for winning competitions" and more bla bla bla...so annoying...This video is about the RULES of Competitive TKD and not self defense...don´t take it to the heart. It wasn´t meant to be mean towards you just in general..have a nice beginning of the week

@Liquidcadmus
@Liquidcadmus 7 лет назад
I train both in TKD and in Kickboxing. so I can try to give you a short answer. the biggest differences between TKD in general and kickboxing are the use of low kicks and how the punches are used. TKD has karate style punches, and the technique is designed for bare fist application. Kickboxing has the punching part directly taken from western boxing, using boxing gloves. the technique, distances, defense, etc. is very different between boxing and traditional martial arts. Also TKD has a huge variety of kicking techniques, where kickboxing focuses on just a few kicks.
