For those who don't know, this is a recreation of an Oiran Procession. The Oiran used to be the highest ranking courtesan in a brothel, and thus very expensive to hire. Men who had a lot of money and wanted to show it off, would hire the Oiran to come to them for the entire night, and they would do so in the most showy way possible. The really tall sandals (geta) were meant to make her visible from any point in the crowd.
In many cultures High platformed shoes or chairs have been used to signify status, especially in urban areas. Persians, Turks, French, Chinese and many more . Her step pattern is quite intriguing. The tallest platform shoes I’ve walked in were 3” but I’ve also worn 6” spikes. So I’m curious the mean behind the bending arched stepping.
@@Frugal_granny The pattern of walking is for show, but it is rooted in practicality as well. The geta are so tall that it was difficult for the Oiran to lift them off the ground and not lose balance, so they dragged them instead. Since the entire point of the Oiran Procession was to be as attention-catching as possible, they came up with that slow, sensuous movement in figures of eight. Rewatching this video it seems this particular performer was lifting her feet off the ground, even if not much, but others I've seen drag the geta fully. It's possible modern materials are lighter than the ones used originally.
don't get me wrong this is beyond impressive and cool but when the short started i burstcout laughing bc i thought the people in the background were yelling "oh daaaaaaamnn"
So much expertise and craftsmanship and training on display, every part of the outfit, every movement. I imagine being a peasant in medieval Japan, seeing a procession like this would be like seeing living gods.
@@kristinburton4953 once you're an oiran you'd get to choose who you slept with and many of them didn't take custom at all, but basically nearly all women were subjected to being told who to sleep with in feudal societies anyways.
All together, the clothes, hair and adornments can weight up to 30 kilos, about 66 pounds, so yeah, it takes a lot of practice to be so graceful and make it look easy.
@@anyjenyup but also no wonder a lot of Japanese men agree sleeping with a prostitute when you have a girlfriend or wife is not cheating. Japan glamourises the oiran like crazy in the past
I'm curious about what the shoe would have been since foot binding was the norm for so long a period I do not think it would traditionally have been between toes flip-flop shaped ties. Or am I mistaken?
What a beautiful procession! They all must've worked very hard to prepare & it's paying off!! Those shoes are incredible & the woman's ability to walk so gracefully is impressive!
El pueblo japonés es un misterio..tienen..mucho..que contar al mundo 🌎 , y debemos observarlos, ..gracias..por..existir...viva Japón..olé olé y olé..😮😮😮😮❤❤❤❤❤
Gosh this whole procession is so beautiful and what an exhausting workout! To constantly be dipping like that would work your legs so hard, while wearing all that heavy clothes and hairpieces…what an effort and how gorgeously executed!
id love to go see this in person and just silently enjoy it 🥹 its beautiful how they keep tradition flowing like this, i hope that in the future its still not lost because its so precious to their culture
I hope so too, bad news is that now places like this are probably closed off to tourists and foreigners due to the law that recently passed 😢 (that law was created due to the highly disrespectfully and destructive behavior of a lot of foreigners, like leaving trash on the ground, harassing Geshias by touching , following, filming and taking photos without their consent)
I love seeing this! Japan has fought so hard to keep traditions alive, and the younger people who choose to train for years to perfect these traditions are commendable.
Culture is so invaluable in each country in the world,if we had the same type of costumes, languages and cultures, wouldn't the world be a boring place to live in,this is beautiful and intriguing, the wailing sound is kind of scary though, but then again that's beautiful culture, what more can I say...❤❤❤❤
I used to love to see the beautiful Japanese women wearing their kimonos in my neighborhood back in the day... I used to also enjoy myself so very much in the Japanese tea gardens.... and watching such beautiful performances.... Plus working in their beautiful gardens.... Which was such a pleasure.... Thank you for having such beautiful influences in my life... And I cannot forget the most beautiful teachers.... Maybe meet again!...
Oh but that’s why platforms were so much fun in the 70s!! They were actually just flats, elevated 2-3” all around, unlike killer spike herls! But I wouldn’t trust my ankles nowadays. Not as limber as when I was 20.😉🤣
@@SoundofSilence492platforms made a big come back at least here in Brazil! They are so comfy, i cannot handle high heels anymore, the thing is im 24.. 😂 im retiring early
@@SoundofSilence492it is the arch that helps. I have good arch strong legs even though pain in knees. I used to run in platforms, stilletos, clogs. Still can wear them at 63.👍🇨🇦
Her outfit is very beautiful, I like the expression on her face and I like how she's stepping in style and in sync with those platform shoes she's wearing! 👏🏾😄
That’s sad, because kimetsu no yaiba heavily over sexualised this tradition and didn’t even represent it properly. Most westerners should already know about geisha (unless they’re truly uncultured). Geisha aren’t just prostitutes like that demon was made to seem like. They were highly trained entertainers and this lady is the highest ranking one (she has a whole different title), this is the process of a rich guy (this is likely a recreation) asking for the highest ranked girl and how she would make her way to him for the whole night. This never happened on a daily basis and only one girl in that brothel/area would have such a high ranking.
@@KawaiiKermitBut it didn’t though…. It quite literally showed nothing sexual all we knew was that guys paid for the night with the top ranked one and it was far from cheap. To add to that the others in the brothel didn’t do anything either you had what that one drunk dude that probably slept with one but besides that the entire beginning of that arc was the dudes being trained to be graceful which obviously didn’t work out lol they were cross dressing and investigating a demon. Passively mentioning the fact that they sometimes slept with people isn’t over sexualizing something. Not to mention Daki is Daki…. We’re not gonna pretend she was holding up their standards anyway right even the building owners gave the best girl whatever she wanted and forced nothing. We only heard of the arranged marriage.
@@KawaiiKermitdemon slayer…barely touched on it though. To be honest it was barely a factor . I understand what your trying to say but in the end demon slayer didn’t reallly do much. Also…why should westerners know? Do Japanese people know every bit of western knowledge. It’s not like this is taught in American schools. In the grand scheme of it all, it’s nice to know but completely irrelevant to most people.
So cool that they do reenactments of this! I've read about the parading with clients down the streets and how a 10 minute walk would turn into a 1 hour spectacle and I always wondered what special way of walking they used and what it looked like. I would love to visit and see a reenactment in person one day.
I absolutely love the Oiran recreations 🫶🫶🥺 History is my favorite hobby and Oirans have always fascinated me and saddened me. The recreations are always a privilege and joy to see.
Yeah, is there any context, here ?? Or do we just guess at whatever we think might be going on ?? And what about that big red paddle-thing that one man keeps holding up ?? Is he going to hit the woman in front of him over the head, with it ??!!?? If he determines that she has in some way, disappointed, him, yet again ????
This is beautiful. She is talented and must have practiced. Using her foot muscles to keep the platform sandals on, walking gracefully in a high platform, wearing many layers and making it look effortless! ❤
Thanks for taking us back in time. Only Japan, can keep ancient traditions, indigenous customs, glamorous old processions, and spiritual connections and reverence for nature alive and well in the modern era.😊
So beautiful! But what's most impressive to me is the toe grip on the shoes. How much strength it takes to grip the strap between the toes and maneuver the shoe at angles like that! It's absolutely amazing, the whole procession is!
