This is an excellent and detailed tutorial. Those changing the oil must understand your car either needs to be on solid ramps with the emergency brake on or on jack stands as you will still be lying under the car to get at the drain bolt and filter. Safety first!!! One minor detail: the Honda Filter states tighten 3/4 turn after gasket contacts base. You stated 1/4 turn. I know not to overtighten the filter but in 40 plus years of owning Hondas I have always tightened the filter 3/4 turn after gasket contacts base. I am a purist: after the old oil drains out I add one full quart of oil to the oil filler hole (with the drain bolt off) and let is "chase" the dirty oil and sediment from the bottom of the oil pan. Dealer never bothers with letting it all drain out. Forty years of owning Hondas and never had an oil burner, I am a 4000 miles or 6 months person.

Nothing purist about sticking to oil change rituals from the 1970s. As long as it's not a turbo there's absolutely no need to change every 4k or 6 months since modern synthetics have shelf life of 5 years. As long as you're using a decent filter the oil can last 15-20k before it begins to break down but you should change between 7.5-12k depending on your driving habits to avoid deposits

Note: You can leave the driver's side bolt in the rear of the cover underneath and take out the rest of the fasteners and just slide it to the side to get access to the drain plug and you can still drain the oil without getting it on anything. Makes things a little easier.

Great video, so far I used Pennzoil ultra, idemitsu, and now using Amsoil signature series. Been using Honda filter just because I am under warranty. I put 10 miles on the Amsoil but seems a little smother, I love Pennzoil though, haven’t used Mobil one, probably next oil change. My question is if I can only use 5qts rather then using 5.1 if it hurts my engine on not using the extra .1? The Amsoil is so expensive and don’t wanna buy the extra qt for 15 bucks if I don’t have too but if I have too I rather spend the 15 bucks rather then risking something. What do you think?
@ThatDadMike
@ThatDadMike 2 года назад
That's a good question. I would just check the dipstick and make sure it lands between the low and high marks. Worse case, you buy the 6th quart and just use a little each time you change the oil and get several oil changes topped off with that extra quart. In the two oil changes I have done, 5 quarts has worked perfect. I imagine it is because there was always a little left in the engine.

@ThatDadMike
@ThatDadMike 3 года назад
Great question! I researched a lot before doing the first oil change and it came down to the viscosity index (VI). Mobil 1 had the higher VI by about 10 points when compared to my goto synthetic brand Castrol. From what I read, the lower the VI, the more the viscosity is affected by changes in temperature. The higher the VI, the more stable the viscosity remains over temperature fluctuations. Mobil 1 had the higher VI so that sold me on the Mobil 1.
@bigdavedayday1581
@bigdavedayday1581 3 года назад
Any name brand synthetic oil will do just fine, just make sure get the right viscosity, in this case its 0w-20. First number is 0 viscosity when oil is cold, then turns to 20 when oil gets to operating temperature.

@@ThatDadMike hey dude so I did change my oil and I believe I added too much oil, about 5quarts. And the oil is sitting on a high mark of the dipstick. Is that bad?
@ThatDadMike
@ThatDadMike 3 года назад
Hi Yusuf, if it is over the fill marks on your dipstick, I would take some out. Too much oil causes a lot of problems so it best to be safe. The manual lists the following oil capacities but when the oil is changed it is possible that not all of the oil drains out so you could actually use a bit less than these quantities: 1.5 liter engine - 3.7 US quarts 2.0 liter engine - 5.0 US quarts The easiest way to take some out is to slightly unscrew the oil filter and let it drain a bit and then retighten the filter. Check the quantity on the dipstick and repeat if necessary. When you are all done, check again for leaks and make sure the filter is tight.
