Can't wait for more updates on 2018 Tiguan or any other VW Tiguan...You need to tell your mom or dad that a video you made 5 years ago actually makes sense today. Tell them a random guy, Paul Jones, bought that car in 2024, and called you a visionary, since mainstream could not deliver like you did, five years ago. I watched this in 24 minutes or 6 times, taking notes, I don't have the right tools now, but I know exactly what to expect for this upcoming oil change in 29 days, and I already have the right questions to ask them, from your video. Hats-Off!
Thanks so much for posting this! I have been waiting for someone to do it! My dealer has some incompetent staff and I don't want my mileage to hit 10k before I do the first oil change but I don't want them doing it lol.
Subaru too, but dry start issues and timing chain noise there as air displaces the oil during cooldown. Better to have the filter at pan level withh no antidrainback valve - in some cases. Cheers! - Sandy
Thank YoUUUUUUU This was sooooo easy...I had to buy the 32 mm socket and oil pan but sill less than half the cost of the local dealership. Quick Oil places are not set up to do this so I ventured out. Easy brother!!!!! Thanks for making a point to click the oil drain plug. So I owe a cold root beer if you ever get to Chattanooga.
It’s so much easier than I thought. The dealership and other automotive shops charge so much to change the oil. They say it’s bc it’s foreign, I don’t see what the big deal is to charge $169 to change the oil. I know the oil cost more & you have the filter, it just seems like they take advantage
Thank you SO much! I really appreciate you sharing this informative and comprehensive video... I decided to not change my oil drain plug this time but will the next. Keep up the good work!
Thanks to this video I dumped my oil on the side of the road after over filling my engine. Just wanted you to know how helpful this was thank you so much
Bought a 2021 this past august and at about 3k miles currently. Thinking about changing my oil at 4500 or less! When buying the car dealer told me that oil change is at 12k miles!!!
Great video thank you so much! I just changed my oil for the first time. I decided to use Valvoline European Vehicle Full Synthetic 0w20 oil and K&N oil filter. Do you think I should get similar performance with those 2 compared to oem?
Thank you so much for this video! Straightforward. I am about to change the engine oil myself soon. It seems that you did not use a jack to lift up your car. Will lifting my car a bit with a jack and a stand be easier?
Thanks good video, quite a bit of oil in these engines at 6 litres! Who has a 32 mm socket in their home garage? Did you purchase that specially? The drain plug and sump pan being plastic is a surprise, how tight is the drain plug meant to be?
I did buy the socket specifically for this. They are easy to find online, I got mine from ESCTuning. I think a 1 1/4" socket will also work. The drain plug just turns like 3/4 of a turn and locks in place. It just has a rubber o-ring to make the seal.
I have the same car I went to buy the same oil and it tells me it won’t fit my car and on castrols website it says they have nothing for my car? Help??
You will find people arguing online for ages about whether or not to fill the oil filter housing/oil filter. In my opinion, if it's easy to fill the housing or spin on filter I would do it. There are plenty of cars where this isn't possible, but I've never had an issue either way.
What type of engine oil temperatures are you seeing in 70F+ weather when cruising on the interstate at 75mph? I feel like the 0W20 weight oil isn’t thick and durable enough for these engines. Why did VW change oil specs, for other than mpg related things? I, and I’m sure you do too, care more about longevity and reliability than a small increase in mpg, 1-2mpg if even that.
I typically see 205F-214F. I've been tempted to run 0w30 or 5w30 just to see what it does to MPG. The car now has heavy all terrain tires so I'm losing MPG anyway lol.
Eh. Some people say yes, some say no. It is plastic, so it could get brittle over time if you re-use it multiple times. I would replace it since it's only a couple dollars.
Specs should be on the oil cap or a sticker in the engine bay. You can get the oil from the dealer, but I ordered 6 individual bottles from ECS tuning.
All you have to know is: VW 508.00 / 509.00. Castrol , Motul, Fuchs and Liqui Moly have this spec available. Watch out - some VW/Audi dealers may try to use up their bulk 5W40 VW spec 502. Unless you see the oil going in from a bottle - I wouldn't place much trust in some dealers. They can even fudge the Repair Order line item. -Sandy
Pretty recently. They recommend it for the Gen 3 "Buddack" cycle TSI or EA888B engine. Probably for better fuel economy, but the oil fill cap is labeled 0W20. I plan on starting oil analysis once the engine is more broken in with 25-30k miles on it. We'll see if any notable trends emerge.
In the Garage DIY Thanks for the answer. I did not know they went down in viscosity that much. Perhaps they don't expect this engine to be pushed hard? Well, it's good to follow the recommended oil by the manufacturer. So you did the right thing even tough I would be scared to pour such a thin oil in a VW.
@@danielfl.9347 Yeah. There is a lot of debate on the forums about which oil to use. Like is the EA888b really much different than the regular EA888? Idk. I'll just wait and see what the oil analysis looks like...if wear numbers are higher than normal I'll think about switching.
@@danielfl.9347 Only 0.5 cP and 3 cSt lighter than an ACEA A1/B1 5W30. And that is at 100deg C. It will be "thicker" at somewhat lower operating temps. To compensate, Bearing area and speed is adjusted, pistons have moly wear pads on the skirts in the thrust areas. OIl pump redesigned, And Light oil circulates faster and removes heat from critical parts more efficiently. The turbo spools faster off the bottom. There is a bulletin now from VW/Audi warning about damage or failures if not using this oil. Don't Improvise. Lease instead :)
I personally haven't. I know two people that had pieces of the hose break off inside the oil pan while trying to extract. I also know a lot of people that do it without issue. It's much easier and less messy for sure. It always leaves a little oil behind of that is something that would bother you.
Oh yeah, easily. Honestly it doesn't feel like you are tightening it enough when the torque wrench clicks. It seems to hit the correct torque before it "feels" like it should.
All the tools most likely. The oil filter housing might be tricky. It's a 32.5mm, but a 1 1/4" socket should work too. The drain plug might also be a little hard to find and so is the oil. If your car is still under warranty I would suggest using the VW/Audi spec oil 0w20 (508/509). If you aren't under warranty or don't care about it I would use a good quality synthetic from your local auto parts store from Mobil 1. Same viscosity, 0w20. I ordered all my parts from ECSTuning.
Thanks for the great video! Do you know if it's ok to use 5W40 oil? I went to Costco and they said the only oil they could use was 5W40. When they lifted my car, they saw this oil drain plug which they had never seen one like this before and they didn't want to do it because they didn't want to break anything. I showed them the video (that you use only a flat hand screwdriver) but then you use a new oil drain plug which they don't have. Do you know if it is mandatory to change it? Also where do you buy it? Thanks for your help! Lol
Thanks! I would not use 5w40. The only places I have found that have the proper VW 508/509 oil is either at the dealer or online. I bought my stuff from ECStuning. You don't "have" to replace the drain plug, it's just recommended.
In the Garage DIY I’m just gonna throw my two cents here. 5W-40 is viable option and even suggested by VW if 0W-20 is either unavailable to you or you live in warm/hot climate. Castrol Edge Professional would be a top choice if 5W-40 is to be used. VW Technical Bulletin 2012855
I just cracked the oil plan (plastic!) and had to limp to a advanced auto parts. Drained the oil out and put epoxy to seal the crack and limped home. Now I have to find a way to order the oil pan and replace the whole thing. Any ideas where to get one other than the dealer or how the hell I should access the front screws on the pan? They’re covered by some plastic
Do you have the Tiguan classic or the newest MQB model, like the one in the video? These engines are only rated for 0W20, my manual states this exclusively.
I ordered it from ECStuning. They don't have an oil change kit with this oil (even though they have kits listed for the MKII Tiguan the oils are 5w40 not 0w20) so you have to buy 6 individual bottles plus the filter and drain plug. Hope that helps!
@@InTheGarageDIY Thanks for the video! If I'm not mistaken, I think they are selling this kit now on their site for this model Tiguan. www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/oil-service-kit/g052577m2kt1/?gclid=CjwKCAjwvJvpBRAtEiwAjLuRPSRZzNedcwLLMU6xHzqpLiYlQGBVrw2VESk7UzO9mcHESQ0X-NkkQhoCPHYQAvD_BwE
I went for the first time engine oil changed yesterday. I confused about how 6 liters motor oil was added to the engine which capacity specification for an oil change with a filter replacement is 4.7 liters ( that’s the official answer from google) By watching your video, you added 6 quarts, around 5.7 liters for perfect result. So it’s normal capacity in reality for every time oil change, right?
In the Garage DIY More than helpful~❤️❤️ it’s not easy living in Europe without speaking local language, and don’t know the simplicity of working on vehicles😅😂
@@charlieyoung1528 You might also confirm that yours has the 2.0L ea888B engine like this one if you are in the EU because I know they come with a different selection of engines over there. All 2018+ Tiguans in the US have the same engine.
Plastic oil pan? Crimony! Looks like a BMW short cut. Cheap plastic crap. I’m going to see if there is a conversion kit for a metal oil pan for mine. Yikes 😱!
you don't even bother to clean the oil filter bracket, by the way the oil was still leaking you already put the drain plug back on. the old oil must be allowed to flow in order to empty as much as possible
In the Garage DIY my mom’s lexus has Direct injection and it is making the clicking sound ( which according to the dealer is the sound of direct injection). One more question: do u feel the car is underpowered when passing or accelerating?since it only has 184HP...
@@jtomtl The power is fine for what it is. I haven't struggled to pass anyone and the power hasn't shown to have an effect on drivability. We do tow a 2000lb camper from time to time. It pulls it just fine, but I definitely plan passes more carefully when towing. Realistically though I don't drive fast enough while towing to be passing everyone. It's been a great car so far ~30k miles.
In the Garage DIY awesome, it explains why the Tiguan is selling so well for VW despite almost all reviewers are saying the engine is underpowered. It’s a family hauler:) Thank you for answering the question, really appreciate it. Enjoy your VW
@@VeryScaryLarry2024 Interesting. I love the fact you can change it from the top without spilling any oil at all. Makes it really clean and convenient.
What a piece of expensive crap! This vehicle looks big and "robust" , but wtf, full plastics, even the oil pan, engine is full of plastic, and it has a timing belt and not a chain. This is why vw are rotten scoundrels! How can you sell this ? It is criminal. It won't last long.
Like everyone else. Like ford with the 5 liter Coyote Engine? Yes, yes, and yes. So ... Have you looked at ANY new engine designs lately? Boy, you are just a bundle of "All Joy" :) Cheers! - Sandy.
