Thanks, glad it was useful. I've been working with the manufacturer, as their largest dealer for two decades now. Work closely with the manufacturer, and have enjoyed watching their success as a major player in the sportfishing arena.
One thing you could talk about is how handy the lever drag is when it comes to kayak fishing. Naturally I set my max drag according to the line I'm using, at that point I know I'll never over stress the line unless I add some thumb pressure to the spool and that is in rare circumstances. The bonus is when the fish is close to the kayak I pull the drag off for obvious reasons, if I was mistaken about the fish being ready to boat and the fish makes another run I can get right back on the drag and know I won't exceed the limits of the line like I've done with a spinning reel or star drag. I use those type of reels all the time but never mess with the drag much after setting them. What I really like is the safety aspect of the lever drag with large fish or a shark next to the kayak, I've had to pull off drag pressure to keep from being pulled over a few times, especially when they pass under the kayak and I have to get my rod around the front or back to continue the fight on the other side. With all of that said in favor of the Avet and lever drags in general, my favorite reel is still my Shimano Tranx when fishing smaller fish and spot casting. Surf, pier, boat or kayak my 2 speed SX Raptor is the go to reel. It's whipped a few large Pike and Muskie in short order as well.
Thanks for your input, sure some will find helpful. You should give the Komodo a try sometime, Okuma did a very good job on that series of saltwater oriented baitcasters, good value, too.
MXJ MC reel came in today. Can't express how happy I am with it and most of all how pleased I am with the ordering experience from Chark Bait. Fantastic folks. The reel (at this time ) is on a 9 foot Uglystik Elite salmon steelhead rod, extra heavy. Line rating 20 to 50 pound. Loaded it up with Berkley Trilene big game 20 pound mono. One of my so called ((ultimate )) catfish and gar rigs.
Just got the SX-MC reels in, 'thats right, "reels." I got one for a long time friend as a gift because he has done more for other people than other people have ever done for him. This guy loves to fish as much if not more than I do and we are always giving each other stuff new or used. Yes the SX is a wee thing and a work of art. I am a hobby machinist (got my own home shop) and recognize quality when I see it.

CharkBaitUSA with you being ‘ a consumer’, an avid angler like most of us here, and very experienced in using these Avets in the real world, makes just talking about them a great sales generator! I’m ordering my third Avet from you guys in the morning... torn between the SX and the MXJ, both in Raptor flavor, for a slow-pitch jigging reel. Probably the MXJ, running 30 to 40lb braid. It can double as a lighter bottom fishing setup for Mangrove and Red Snapper, but still be compact enough to jig with all day on a Shimano Trevala S rod.

I have an MXL Raptor and frankly would prefer the MXJ. 50# for the braid would be my call, can load a bit over 300 yds, MXL w/straight braid can do closer to 500 yds! 40# would allow very good capacity. If fishing say 30# and down, the G2 is adequate. If there's a potential for higher drag levels, more appropriate for say 40#, then the Raptor is the way to go.
Thanks for noting. Most manufacturer line specs and probably drag capabilities are incorrect when compared to real world. Not purposeful,, manufacturers make stuff and ship it out, as a retailer we work with what they produce and spend a good deal of our time rigging reels and fishing their gear.
Excellent vid. I have been waiting for a new Avet vid covering all their latest pieces from you since you're definitely the go to guy for Avet. I've purchased all my Avets from charkbait just based on your old vids on them, and I simply love the way they work. Guys on the Florida side tend to use spinners for literally anything they can get away with or that bloody shimano. A great example, I went to a tackle shop in Ft. Lauderdale once to buy some vertical lures. I asked about their policy on them buying used reels, and it became a discussion on reel manufacturers. Well I don't know what the deal was, the guy had an issue with every reel maker except shimano. According to him no one made a product that was good enough to last over time or handle fish day in and day out. Avet and Accurate were breakable according to him and servicing them was an issue. Okuma and Penn were completely trash, Daiwa wasn't on shimano's level and companies like Seigler, once Truth and Release were unreliable because they went through so many name changes. He clearly didn't know it had nothing to do with the performance of the product. Not to mention he claimed he had tested many models belonging to these manufacturers citing they failed or broke. The first thing I thought was is he fishing them too hard and too heavy? Either way, shimano was the only good reel maker period. My thing is this. I have used several brands and gone up against big fish. I can't see the point of having complete devotion to a manufacturer when even though they make a particular type of product, it's not for everyone. I've used shimano's before. I don't think there is anything unique about them except that they are extremely over priced. I suppose if you want to use a Stella to catch a GT on a plug, great. Chances are if you can afford the trip, you can afford the reel. I don't see the point of using one to catch a yellowfin tuna when I can catch it on an avet that's 600 dollars cheaper and chances are they won't have issues anymore so than a reel from shimano
Great point, every brand has their pros and cons, it ultimately comes down to personal prefrence. Trying to ram a singular brand down someones throat is not the way to go. Josh from #jandhtackle says "we are not a brand shop, we want to get you whatever it is that you need, whatever that brand is". Keeping an open mind is important.
Very well said. I have been using my Avet HXW 5/2 for a few months now and for the most part it has been great with some minor things I don't like about it. I hate when you go to a shop and tell them what you are looking for and they try and get you into something that is the complete opposite of what you were looking for.
Matt's Saltwater Fishing I think it's too easy too nitpick when it comes to reels. For instance, I can say Avets have back play in the handle which large in part they do. Some people may make a big deal of it, but it's never affected my ability to catch a fish. I can make a big deal about how my Penn spinning reels aren't particularly smooth even right out of the box, but I think with the way I have used them, they feel no different now then when I first bought them. They still horse in fish. Same goes for shimano. Everyone makes a big deal about the Stella and twin power. I think they're heavy as hell, they're play is stiff and according to the line capacity spec on most of their spinners, they don't hold a lot of line. Funny enough, I think Daiwa makes smoother spinning reels, but their reels are heavy for their respective sizes too. Now in the end of the day, did everything I say really means anything? I don't think it matters in the grand scheme of things at all. If the reel can last several years with regular maintenance and keep catching fish with it still handling the way it did when you first used it, than the reel has served it's purpose regardless of who makes it. Especially now where everyone is making variations of the same thing. It means everyone has something to offer
I completely agree. There is so many options out there at the moment there is literally a reel for everyone. I was looking to replace a TLD 25 and instead of going w/ another TLD 30 I went w/ the Avet HXW 5/2. My complaint about the HXW 5/2 is the clicker isn't as loud as the TLD (nothing like hearing the clicker scream) but I heard about that before I made the purchase and that the first few clicks on the drag glide plate are very light (useless), barely more resistance than freespool. The drag on the HXW ramps up very quickly once you are between strike and freespool. Where as the TLD has a more linear drag curve. That being said the Avet casts like a dream and the TLD doesn't lol. Gonna try and hookup to a Big Tarpon this Summer and hopefully the HXW spanks them like the TLD does.
I'm a professional millwright for a living, the back play in the handle on the Avets is due to good engineering. Backlash in any gear set is critical. Backlash, is clearance between mating gear teeth, that allows the gears to mesh without binding and provides space for lubrication of the teeth. This prevents overheating, damage, and premature wear. Gears that fit tight may feel like they are better quality and more precisely manufactured, but are the exact opposite of what you want for durability.
I've bought so many reels over the years. I'm currently an Okuma guy mainly as i really like the Alijos in most of these sizes. However, if im looking at 150+ pound tuna i still reach for my HXW Raptor. On a private boat to me it's a nicer reel to fish compared to a 30 or 50N if you're tossing bait. In your hand its just a nicer piece to use.
Very well explained. I picked up an Avet HXW 5/2 a few months ago and it has been performing great. It casts great, makes light work of the fish I have caught on it so far. Only complaint for me is that the clicker is not loud and the first few notches on the drag glide plate are useless to me but that isn't too big of deal for me yet.
In my opinion the Avet Raptor series are the best from SX to HX. When I go long range fishing I take one SX, two MXL, two JX, and 2 HX. These reel give me the full range of applications. My favorite reels are the MXL's. Light reel with lots power.
I'm with you. I only own one Raptor so far, would love more but I've got to move thru some of my older reels first or suffer serious shoe shopping consequences by my wonderful wife.
AWESOME video on the huge selection Avet offers! Looking at a still picture and graphs of spec numbers makes it hard to compare one to another. Your video is the absolute best to actually SEE the models side by side, and your narration based on ACTUAL USE of each, and the positives and negatives of all the different aspects is a total gold mine of information! I recently got an Accurate BV-600 2 speed, loaded with 65 lb braid (350 yds.) for capacity, with 200+ yds of 80 braid on top for powering big Fla. Grouper away from its rockpile, with a 50’ piece of 80 mono at the end for a little stretch cushion and abrasion protection. Looking for a smaller Avet to run 40 to 50 braid and short ( 50’) 40 to 50 mono topshot for Snapper, and as a starter jigging reel. I think a JX Raptor would be perfect. I’m in Fla. but will look at your store online to get one, just because I appreciate your time explaining everything that nobody else has thought to do to help folks new to Avets. THANK YOU!
Thanks for the feedback. Unlike some online database sites, we are indeed a bit different. We actually fish, and I do try to speak from experience and offer an opinion rather than regurgitate a manufacturer's bullet points. I have a question ,on the models with no MC cast control, where is the mechanical cast control if they have one? Is there an adjustment for spool side play that also puts some tension on the spool if turned in a wee bit? In other words if I can cast a conventional reel do I really need MC cast control? I can cast the old Peen conventional reels all day without back lashing. This would be for catfish in the SX size and would order from you guys.
They don't work like freshwater baitcasters, the adjustment on the side of the spool is for your drag present. It's not for adding resistance for casting or for centering the spool like a star drag. Different animal/reel. Some will use the lever, advancing up a small amount to add some resistance on a cast. That's not the preferable use of the lever, but is equivalent to a mechanical cast control. I consider myself a decent caster, however I do prefer my Avet's with the MC feature, works very well and can be helpful even if you have an "educated" thumb.

Thank you Sir for your detailed explanations. Based on your input and my local fishing store's guidance, I bought a MXL 6/4. It pulled in quite a few sculpin and decent sized bonito on its maiden voyage, with ease. Next one will be G2 and MC. If I may ask a question, which Avet would complement my MXL, to close the gap as the water warms up and larger fish like Yellowtail, Dorado, Tuna and Wahoo become the target species. Hi there, hope u doin well, I'm from Cape Town South Africa. I'm looking at getting a lever drag reel for myself I currently use a Daiwa Saltiga 50 star drag reel spooled with 30 pound 0.40mm mono line. Rock and Surf Fishing. I cast my bait out depends where I detect bites, but anywhere upto 100 meters. So im looking to get a lever drag reel that will suit my type of Angling, I tried a buddy's shimano talica 25, Tooo Heavy, very expensive n for that price I'd expect a stainless steel drag. Sad to pay that much for a reel n it has a brass drag. Thanks in advance.
I think the HX or HX Raptor will be an excellent alternative. The Raptor produces more drag, making the reel very capable of performing from 100 lb down. The standard version better for say 50-60#.
Local, all around for a 1/2 to 3/4 day'r - MXJ or MXL fishing 20-30#, right now I'd opt for 20# on top and have some lighter leader at 15-20# fluorocarbon just in case things are slow...
I think I'm gonna pick up the MXJ Raptor in hopes of maybe doing a full day. Only want one set up though, think I will be able to put enough 60lb JB hollow on it and fish 20-60 wind-on leaders? How much JB 60 would i be able to fit, or would you recommend something else?
MXJ Raptor is a very useful piece. I'd say more suited to say 40# and down, could go 50, forget 60. Couple reasons to limit the range, capacity & gearing. One reel can't do everything, but an MXJ or MXL Raptor can do a heck of a lot and cover your bases quite well for 3 days and down trips. For schoolie tuna it could be all you need...unless you get into the bigger local bluefin in the 150lb up range - which are catchable with 50# line (I and many others have done just that). For those fish, the gearing and capacity will probably break your heart and cost you the fish. For the vast majority of fish, on the trips you mention, you'll be fine but will have no reason to fish heavier than 40# line and most will be fine with 30#. Wind-on leader idea very good, we have vids and product to make that happen for you. JB's 60 hollow is a good product, but note it's a 12 strand. As such, Toro's 16 strand kills it in terms of ease of use. Toro also has 50# hollow which may be a better call for you. Noting that all good braids are conservatively rated and a knotless connection is 100% in terms of maintaining test, I'd go that direction over 60#. The capacity benefit is greater than bumping up 10#'s in stated test. Visit CharkBait.com to catch the specials...you get hollowcore braid on the Raptors, 300 yds n/c.

I have a question Mr. Mark.How come the Avet SX raptor doesnt come with oil or schematics paper work? I bought one from ya'll it got spool but I was surprised that it didnt come with everything my G2 MXJ came with.Did Avet stop putting oil in Raptor boxes and instructions etc also the handle plate it came very loose I had to tighten it.They are good reels but I am not getting any paper work with them like other reel makers have as Shimano,warranty card schematics.
Avet is inconsistent at best with the sample oil or grease and for schematics they have done a few different things over the years. They've never been much on manuals, the two brothers behind Avet are machinists not writers or marketing professionals. They went from no schematics, to a enclosed mini-dvd, to nothing since same info is being provided on their website. Frankly, the website is the better option for schematic info - it's always current and provides updated info. The sample bottles of oil or grease, if they have they put in and if they don't they won't. One could contact them directly if it's an issue for a person. To Avet, it's less than a secondary concern. They put their time into the machining and assembly, they sell reels. They do not sell grease or oil, that's not their thing and frankly I'd be using products for that purpose which stand on their own merit like Cal's Grease should one want... - These are my thoughts on the matter, my opinion. For direct info you might want to contact them directly.

I'd like your advice on choosing between the MXJ Raptor MC and a regular G2 JX MC. They are similar in drag and line capacity specs. What would YOU choose and why? Thank you!!!
Its a question of the line test you intend to fish primarily and gearing. The Raptor version MXJ can fish 40# very well, but the gear ratios did not change from G1, G2 and the Raptor. So, you're at 6 & 4:1. The JX G2 will fish 40 and 50# very well, and you have a lower ratio on the bottom end at 3:1, 6:1 on the high gear. For most fish of say 50# and down, no big deal, both very capable. But, as the fish get larger that gearing makes a huge difference. I'm saying that as someone who got their butt handed to them trying to deal with a >150# tuna on an MXL Raptor. Had I been fishing my JX I'd have stood a chance, on the MXL Raptor I was beaten up for over 4 hours until finally pulling the hook. At 4:1 I could not turn the fish's head and keep it coming my way. With a ratio more in my favor the outcome could very well have been different...as it was a couple years later on a 150 pounder using a different (though similarly sized) reel.
Thanks Mark. I see your point. I fish local so no 150+ lb fish, but it seems that the G2 JX is a better reel. I am also looking into a 9' jig stick for medium or light surface irons. I don't know what's best. I stand around 5'9 and 170 lbs. What would you suggest? Thanks again.
@@LTTang On a jigstick, both will get the job done well, thinking 40# as typical tossing line class. Personal preference, I lean towards the JX but run my MXL Raptor in this application too. (On a trip with wahoo potential, I'll rig both the MXL and JX for tossing iron on 8 footers - I'm not a big long rod guy typically, got off that when I moved towards more private boating and realized I could always move the darn boat...). On a party boat, larger sportfisher with 30 other guys, no doubt the longer rods hold an advantage, both reels fine, JX is my personal fav.
The 30's are more robust in construction. Big question I'd have is what line test are you working with. That points me towards the correct model. HXW comes both as a standard build and Raptor. So, line test comes into play there as well. I'm thinking high speed based on target species, and in that sense, with resistance, fishing say 80-100#, I'd want the 30 over the HX series. If more light trolling duty, an HX series reel can get the job done at 50-60# and the Raptor more like 80-100.
Outstanding vid, as usual. The only info I need to decide on a LX Raptor and an SX-MC for fishing Yellow Fins and Reds out of New Orleans. The wife says I can't give Mark anymore money til I fix the roof. I don't understand, because it only drips onto her side of the bed. Wth?
I fully understand your predicament Chet. The gal is being a bit uncooperative and unsympathetic to your very rational priorities. I feel your frustration. The only suggestion I can offer is a suggestion to grab her a gift card for a new pair of shoes. That typically provides me a bit of latitude in my own purchases. (Worked again, I got a new/used boat two days ago!)
Should do. The three speeds started off slowly, and over the past couple years it seems folks have figured out their strengths. The "granny gear" makes the reels true stump pullers. On a big fish, there's no substitute for a low, low bottom gear.
Mark I am looking into 5-6 day long range trips out of San Diego for the “upcoming” spring or early summer. I currently own a basic SX MC, and a G2 MXL MC. I figure that covers 20# outfit and 30# outfit since the G2 MXL puts out 15lbs at strike. I also have an International 50 so I feel I have the top end covered if needed. What am I missing would you say maybe a JX as a 40# class? I’d prefer to stay away from the 30’s as I have my East Coast offshore stuff covered!
The G2 version JX covers 40 and 50#, while the standard JX is really a 40# piece. I own two JX 2 speeds, one with MC feature which I appreciate. They are my most versatile reels, cover so many applications, and they've done me well with tuna up to 110 lbs, while others have done far better than that. The G2 is the way to go on that size. Your other missing piece would be an HX to cover 50/60# or w/Raptor to cover say 60-80#. Those two sizes, JX and HX cover a lot of range and offer a lot of what I like to see in a reel. They have very good drags, they cast well, nice size in the hands, reliable performers over many years use.
Appreciate the quick response! I see guys loading 40 even 50lb braid on the SX which I don’t understand so I prefer fishing them maybe lighter than others. I'm a big fan of United Composites, view them as the definitive rod maker, state of the art at this point in time. You'll see a couple videos regarding those USA made rods on our channel. As to the right rod, that will depend upon several factors, line test, your own style of fishing, application... a few things to go over and dropping over to our shop or giving me a call on the phone at CharkBait will prove worthwhite. Can't be covered via text within YT...
Ah, that's the sound of security. Avet's big game reels are not necessarily quite. What you are hearing is the sound of the dogs, part of the anti-reverse system. If a reel is QUIET then chances are it's making use of a one-way anti-reverse bearing. Bearings will fail, when that happens reel handles tend to swing backwards as well as forwards...not so good an outcome. You benefit from having either single or double dogs on any reel made to fish heavy. There is a workaround, which Okuma made use of with their Makaira series which does have both the one way bearing and silent dogs. As mentioned, only using a 1 way bearing has a downside, beware of many of the "bike-maker's" reels in that regard. Check more than just specification numbers, check a schematic when possible.
Just for clarification, the Avet HXW Raptor has the exact same line capacity as the Avet Pro EXW 30? I will be spooling which ever reel I choose with 100lb Spiderwire Blue Camo which has a diameter of .020in. How much line could I expect to get on the reel with no top shot? Thanks guys! I was looking at getting one of these reels for shark fishing, the lighter weight of the HXW is appealing to me as it would be easier for casting the bait out off a pier if needed if it has the same capacity of the EXW.
"Exact same" - no it's approximately the same, approx the same as any 30 & 30N. You can confirm specs from our website or the manufacturers. Capacity numbers in isolation don't mean much, diameters of a given line can vary from supplier to supplier and even then there's no guarantee of consistency. I don't work with spiderwire, can't speak to that line, generally considered more of a freshwater product. Many do run the HXW in the application you mention, you pick up some casting capability, too. The Pro series are more robust simply due to construction and design, better trollers. But, the HX series shines when in the hands vs a boat's rod holders.
Both will do you well, subjective choice. Both reels are really best suited for use at 30# and down based upon drag capability, same for first and second gen reels. Raptors are a different story. At 40#, I'd go JX, if you are fishing the reels at appropriate drag setting for the line test used. For rods, several very good options. Best to take this discussion directly to our website, CharkBait.com and communicate thru email rather than here w/youtube, my response time won't be good here verses work email address which is posted at the bottom of each page of our site.
Really it's a question of the line test you require and then working backwards to pick the right model based upon the amount of drag and line capacity you need for the application. There's quite a range in what I see/hear folks using. Probably 80# braid is most common, with leader which may be above or below that test. Hopefully I can get some advice. I just got a AVET JX G2 Raptor and I spooled 50lb 8-strand braid with 10#mono backing. I plan to use it for bottom fishing and was wondering how much topshot and what weight would be best?
For bottom fishing, the benefit of the mono leader will be abrasion resistance and visibility. Too much mono, you'll have more stretch. Most guys will run anywhere from 10-25 feet of leader, or close to that for bottom fishing.
@@curtisjeffries9812 It's all about application and your experience/skill level. A good case can be made to just fish a fairly short length of FL line on top of the braid, but there are some caveats and considerations. Bottom fishing is one thing, casting, flylining a bait, light trolling duty, lots of different ways to fish and all may influence the length of topshot needed and whether having a longer topshot of mono is advantageous. Ultimately it's subjective to the angler's use/needs.

I turn the handle on two avet reels this week and all of them feel like a coffee grinder when you turn the handle . nothing smooth about it just plain coffee grinder .
Not so useful a post sir. Are these your reels or did you drop by a store? If you dropped by a shop, were they actually trying to sell an Avet reel or switch you to a more profitable shimano reel? I've certainly seen that game played plenty of times at a shop... If grinding, then the drag setting was likely well over intended level and some numbnuts crunched a right side spool bearing. Not uncommon for those who don't know how to set the drag on a leverdrag reel or those trying to break a reel... If these were your reels, when was the last time they were properly serviced? One needs to understand the gear to a certain extent in order to use them properly or have useful discourse about 'em. A drive by slam serves no purpose, other than slamming a very good manufacturer, one of three who are actually making gear for fishermen here in America. Accurate, Avet and Seigler are very good firms who actually give a rats ass about American fishermen. You can't say the same thing about the offshore manufacturers who depend upon china to make what we consume. Learn who your friends are and support them. I'll assure you, it's not the bike maker...but their handles turn so smooth...who cares, what's inside is imported junk with a very limited lifespan. I own several first generation Avet reels, 18 years old, 17 years old, 16 years old. They still perform flawlessly and I've had no reason to replace them.
@@CharkBaitUSA I was looking for a reel on tackle Direct on the internet . I came across the avet reel I also check the reviews on it . They gave it an excellent review across the board . I wanted a surf avet reel for surf casting . while I was at J&H I check the reel out . I asked to see the reel . they allowed me to see the reel . I turn the handle on two reel and it feel like a coffee grinder . I asked why does it feel like a coffee grinder . I don't remember exactly his word but something like it was an old reel . not up to date .
@Ignatius Laurent Thanks for your clarification. Could very well simply be that the drag was set too high. On a leverdrag reel the spool moves across a plane as the lever is engaged. Consequently, if the drag is set too high the spool moves too far, producing a crunched right side spool bearing...
Nope, that was a limited run and no more were made. Avet next produced the Patriot version Raptors for about a year and a half. These do went away, like the Doroado production they were LIMITED. While Avet ceased making the dorado "flavored" reels we initiated a production with Accurate. These are posted on our site now. www.charkbait.com
That's going to be a function of the line test you wish to fish. That's a call for you to make based upon your local application - one better anticipated thru talking to folks fishing where you will be. With that info, contact me at my shop and we can dial you in properly. But, without more guidance I'd be blowing smoke trying to make a recommendation.
We've had a few freshwater folks who target larger grade cats make use of saltwater gear for great effect. Certainly drag system and overall strength of saltwater gear is more appropriate for those heavier fish being pulled from cover. You don't need great capacity, but you do need heavy drag and abrasion resistance on the line. I've seen folks go small, like SX/MX series, and for those more serious G2 and even Raptor models in the JX and HX range. Consider the line test you want to run, that will determine the drag level you need, and that will narrow the field. Get hold of me via email at CharkBait and we can go further...
The SX G2 is perfect for what you are looking to do. The standard SX is a good choice as well if you are focusing on mostly blues and channels, but the drag is a little low for pulling big flatties out of heavy cover.
@@jroyero Yep have been on it several times. Not hard to figure out but it needs fixing big time in my opinion. Too convoluted ,I think there are 18 different SX series reels in one spot and they don't have mono specs for the reels. All I use is mono. They need to separate the reels up into the platforms each are on so people wont get frustrated, I know I was till I figured them all out. By now I have SX and MX series memorized. numbers and all and what they mean. LOL No other company I have looked at offers so many options made in the USA for that price. Not saying they aren't out there I just haven't been to the sites. CharkBait has the mono specs on their site.
Boy that question goes back... Harry had designs for levelwind, spinning and star drag reels years back but never put them into production. Can't speak to the future, but to me it seems like the folks at Avet have a tiger by the tail. So many models, strong demand, multiple versions and colors. .. With so many things going, it's hard to find time to pursue "new" series which are quite different animals. At this time, the top two star drags, in my estimation, are Daiwa's Saltiga series and Okuma's Tesoro series reels. Both are very good, I'd call 'em state of the art.
Sure bet, but it's really going to be a question of line test being fished and line capacity you require for your application. Can't speak to that without knowing what you'll be running on the reel.
@@CharkBaitUSA I fish in naples, fl. Really calm beach so I'm not worried about line capacity. I'm also gonna be pitching under dock pilings for snook, just wanted something that can really horse em out of the pilings
@@caseycoffey1 All reels produce a certain amount of drag pressure, you want to fish the appropriate line test for what you want to pursue and have the drag set accordingly. That's one of the great features of a leverdrag reel, you can really set it up properly if you take a little time with a springscale. Chances are the SXJ will do you very well so long as your plans were to be fishing within it's intended use parameters. The standard G1 will do UP TO 10lbs of drag - appropriate for up to 30# line and my preference would be maybe 7-8 lbs drag fishing 20-25# line.
Excellent products. Too bad AVET marketing is horribly misaligned. No logic whatsoever to the classification of reels. S = small ? M = medium. J, H, L ???? Someone needs organize and market the reels by size with appropriate numbers and NOT letters that are arranged non alphabetically and which offer no clue whatsoever to the size or class of reel. Like I said, great products, but classification system is infuriating ...
Well, I guess that's what these vids are for... Avet did not start out thinking they'd build so many models. When it all began there was only one model - LX, then the JX (J for tossing jigs - on a jig stick - mimicking size of a Newell 332), and then the EX 4/0, MX and SX soon after. Kind of a work in progress, and by the time they covered all relevant bases they'd already defined named product series. No so much to learn, and there are others even more confusing out there. Bottom line, great reels, exceptional value, very good fishing tools to own long term. That's the reality, and I think we can balance some second guessing and frustration against all that these folks have done right. If it were not for Avet, we fisherman would not have the wonderful gear from many manufacturers that we do today. They pushed others to improve, competition does that when allowed to work as it should. Their impact has been great in that regard, huge improvement in all manufacturers products due to what Avet accomplished back in 2003-2007.
Good luck, both are wonderful reels. The Seigler reels have improved greatly, and there's no better warranty on the planet. The little SGN is a pretty amazing piece, I'd consider them an upgrade to the Avet when comparing an SXJ to SGN or SX to SG - when comparing single speed reels. Going two speed, Avet wins. As a casting piece, both are great but for many Avet's MC feature tips the scale in their favor.
Marketing is not their strength, they're machinists. As a retailer, they may not be the easiest line to stock given so many models and permutations. But, from the fisherman's standpoint, it's great to have options available to make the reel you purchase exactly what you need for your particular application.
Never too late to rename the models for next production cycle. Line class, MC, S or 2 speed. Maybe you can make some headway with the marketing team ! Thanks for the reply. I definitely want to get one w/ MC that has better drag and lighter than Abu 7000 .... recommendation ?
