2018 Jimmy Awards finalist Darian Goulding, from Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards in Chicago, IL performs “Proud of Your Boy” from “Aladdin.”
I went to the Jimmy’s to support my brother (Go Noah!) and sat next to a bunch of older women who all grew up in New York and watch pretty much every Broadway and other shows they can. When Darian sang in the medley (as Beast) they kept whispering about “that voice!” and how great he was. When he came on stage to sing his solo that didn’t recognize him at first because he was in costume before but as soon as he started singing “Proud of Your Boy” the lady next to me gasped and said, “he’s the one with the voice!” The entire performance she was leaned forward and enthralled trying to make sure she heard every bit of his song. I just wanted to share that story because it was so sweet and indicative of how great Darian is. In a group of incredibly talented young performers he was someone that stood out to everyone watching and he has a very bright future ahead of him.
Andrew Barth Feldman I feel like watching this must boost your self confidence because you know you had to beat *that* to win. Jk, you were freaking amazing. But a very late congrats on your win, and, ya know, getting cast as Evan Hansen. Break a leg when you open soon!
Soooo this is my favorite broadway song out of the all that I’ve heard. Whenever I do any competition or audition I try to add this song. I’ve always been biased to Adam Jacobs because his voice is insane but Darian just made me CRY!!! He didn’t do too much. The end he was just still and didn’t too too much with his voice. There was an honesty and a break in his voice that literally broke me. Bro that was 🔥, I can’t wait for your broadway debut, maybe I’ll meet you sometime if I make it there myself. You’re a star!
