When going downhill, put in lower gear like 4-5 gear on Cruise Control BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY Drive it in SPORT MODE. It charges the battery to full faster. Also, drive it in SPORT MODE on flat roads as well. Idling is when I have a problem with my 2017 Optima Hybrid doing the same thing. I am replacing the Hybrid Battery with a new one(Not OEM but has a 3-year warranty. Hopefully, that does the trick for me. I am at 115,000 miles BUT the engine was replaced FREE of CHARGE under Warranty at 99,600 just making the cut of 100K.
We got our battery replaced free, but not before I had to call corporate and start a claim. Dealership wanted yo charge us 28,000 because apparently the transmission, engine ND hybrid battery were done....while they had it in their shop, a rat went inside and chewed the main wire harness. Car was totalled. Turned into a 10k repair which the vehicle insurance would cover. But man, that kia dealership was the worse. Love the optima too. Very comfortable and great on gas..
Did you ever find out what the issue was? Just happened to me and I had it towed to the dealership. I feel like a lot of hybrid users are having the same issue. There was a recall for the BMS sensor which seemed to have fixed the issue for a while then it went off again this time my car was hesitating as I pressed the gas.
I did not. I kept driving it the way it is. It's done it again from time to time. I just avoid letting the charge get very low, as long as it stays charged it doesn't happen.. when did this happen to you??
Mine is 2018 Kia hybrid as well. The speed just decreases by itself and if you’re not lucky it will just stop by itself immediately currently dealing with this right now
I just got mine back. It happend to be the hybrid battery.. kia has an extended 150k mile warranty on hybrid batteries so it was replaced at no cost.. unfortunately tho we can't even drive it. While in the shop it sat for a long time that rats nested under the dash and there's a horid smell. Now we're waiting to go through insurance to take it to a shop so they can remove the dash, remove w.e is under there and re install
i just got that check hybrid system check engine light yesterday. i was going up a steep hill, like 100mph, but i drove it home an hour away just fine. plugged in my OBD scanner, no codes. restarted the car, lights went away. checked the 12v battery in the back with a load tester. showed 11 volts with the car off... ima test it again with the car on and AC on. because i bet it drops lower.. its probably the original battery that came with the car and im at 100k miles on it. sometimes my headlights will flicker and I'll get a "low headlight" warning. ive been through 3 sets of LEDs... im sure i need a new hybrid battery too. but im tryna save up for a vacation rn 💀 i just gotta get me another credit card 💀💀💀
My car has done in from time to time mostly if I do a long drive I have a 2015 Kia optima just did it on my way back from TN might have some correlation with all the mountains and high terrain I went through not sure. Is there a way to charge the battery???
Not that I know of. Other than just driving it very calmly. I try to charge it as much as I can by braking from a long distance, coasting through flat roads and slightly pressing the break on downhills. It hasn't done it to me ever since this day.... I purposely drained thr battery back down to that 1/4 line again while I was home. Just to try and see what happens if he loses full charge. Except it didn't do the same thing again.. I'm thinking maybe there's a faulty connection with the bms..
I beleive with your year. Your fuse link is what tends to go out. It's an easy fix. Look it up on RU-vid. Might just help with your issue.. just be careful and fully watch the instructions. Don't ever want to mess with a lice battery
Did you guys also have the cruise control on? I see this guys does and mine just did this, long distance drive in the mtns, I also had the cruise control on. Wondering if there is a correlation.
Driving in SPORT MODE helped. I would also like to know, mines 2014, also used bought @ over 100k miles this the 3rd time it’s happened but mine usually says to pull over and turn off. After some time sitting …like no driving it went away but I usually take it right to Kia. I don’t think they know what the cause is. The replaced my motor, they cleared old codes but now I have to take it back a third time.
Yours maybe the fuse to your hybrid system. I've seen other videos that explain the same issue u have with the same warning. And they replace that fuse. Seems to fix the issue. Look up "kia optima hybrid fuse"
@user-it6bx9tt5h it was at no cost. Hybrid batteries have an extended 150,000 mile warranty. As long as it passed the test for them to replace it. I have no clue how they determine if it's eligible, but mines was. I had first reached our to kia corporate. Because the dealership didn't want to assist with the warranty. They quoted me 12k to replace it. Follow by another 16k for engine and transmission. Which it did not need. The techs were pretty clueless.
i fixed my problem. had the same stuff. almost 100k mileage. around 33 or lower average mpg. i measured the 12v battery in the trunk. 11volts Off with load, 13.5V with car On. normally that would probably be fine, but since its a hybrid, i think the inverter and other hybrid parts would add more load to make the battery "weak" i saw a reddit about a prius guy replacing the 5 year old 12v battery. he said if the 12v is weak, the main hybrid battery will try to charge it instead of bringing power to the wheels.. and when i be driving, i watch that little yellow bar hover around 40-50 mpg but my average mpgs will still drop.... anyways, went to autozone, they installed a new 12v battery. and my MPGs went up from 32/33 to 40-45
That's insane. I too thought about replacing the battery but my issue was a bit different. One of my battery cells would deviate in charge so I knew something was up with the hybrid battery. It just went back to kia after 20 miles of driving from when they had fixed it. Waiting to see what they tell us next
If it helps anyone, we are having this same issue and hey just diagnosed the car with a bad battery monitor system module. Part # 37513E7000. This part (we are told) acts like an alternator in a regular engine and charges the hybrid engine battery while driving. The error code comes up if the battery is not charging when driving. Ours is a 2014 kia optima hybrid ex. If that helps!
Ours happend to be the entire hybrid battery. I was unaware that the battery would be under extended warranty, and kia covered the repair. But the cars been in for 2 months now. Hopefully we hear back soon.
