For the finale of our 2018 Nissan LEAF FIRST DRIVE REVIEW, MotoMan takes the 2018 Nissal LEAF SL Electric Car fitted with the Nissan Pro Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving function out onto the roads of Norther California. Yes, he demonstrates the sorta self-driving functionality of the B Segment Nissan LEAF but also an unusual twist to this semi autonomous driving system from Nissan engineers . . .

Probably one of the best systems to get your attention. I love that the second alarm is the same as a terrain warning in a Boeing aircraft

I would describe this as a c-segment car, i.e. Nissan Sentra/Pulsar, VW Golf, Toyota Corolla/IM/Auris, Mazda 3 etc. But great review!

Nissan are excellent with their safety features on their cars. We are really impressed with our Qashqai. Loads of safety features i wouldn’t expect this sort of car to have. I love their sensible approach to safety without taking the fun or control away from the driver.

Volkswagen has been offering such a feature for couple of years now. But it's just the acc + lane assist in their offer. Available even in VW Polo. You don't need to call it "Pro super extra mind blowing pilot" to make it work.

This was an awesome overview of ProPilot (you obviously played with it a lot before hand and found the limits. Nice job)

Thank you! That said, would not say a lot in this specific case - rolled into it with a bit of off camera testing that morning as well as A LOT of testing of all the other systems as you may have seen in other episodes.

I think you misunderstood what the car was telling you with that warning. There was nothing wrong or difficult for it to handle. It will steer for you and keep the distance to the next car (and, in the case of the SL, will check all of the blindspots, etc.), brake if needed, etc. But you need to keep your hands on the wheel. If you take your hands off, it will start alerting you about it and will eventually stop (and even pull over, I believe), because it does want to make sure the driver is still there and can take over control, should it be needed. So, as long as you keep your hands on the wheel, it will keep doing all that for you without any alerts.

Limemill hum, what's the point of using acc if you need to keep your hands on the wheel? I want to relax my eyes and my arms, so if I use the acc I will keep my hands on my lap.
@Limemill
@Limemill 6 лет назад
MOISES F IZURIETA they will probably update the software as they go along at which point they may let drivers take their hands off (but they'll probably make you sign a disclaimer or something). And it's not your regular ACC, it's pretty much a full autopilot: it keeps you in the lane, keeps the distance to the next car, turns, brakes, etc. Besides, with a range of 250 km it's not like your hands will go to sleep on the wheel: you'll need to make a 40-minute stop at a fast charger every 2.5 hours or so if you go on a long trip. Anyways, I'll post here once I've tested ProPilot.

I know.. He keeps going on saying "oh man, this car is amazing, look at all these magnificent warning signals telling me something is wrong, isn't this wonderful! Ooo here's another alarm going off, look now the car is slowing down, all to tell me that something is wrong. I have no idea what that is, but something is wrong and it's telling me, what a time to be alive!" (rolling eyes as he hits into a tree or the car pulls off to the side till he puts his hands on the dang wheel. O_o

great de-escalating implementation! this is what this current level of tech should do if it detects that the driver is no longer paying attention

I have a question on the pro-pilot that I haven't been able to find the answer to. I have a daily commute in heavy traffic. In stop and go traffic, adaptive cruise control makes sense, but does the automatic steering disengage if you are on the freeway, but only going 5-10mph for stretches at a time? Thanks!
@donnolin2032
@donnolin2032 5 лет назад
The automatic lane keep assist only works above 17 miles an hour. It works very well at freeway speeds.

Hey Motoman, if you put tension on the steering wheel, such as hanging something off it to simulate your hand resting on it, will it then keep going and stay in the lane? Because that's how you trick the Mercedes system into keeping going.

I wonder why they can't make the car go over to the lane on the right which is usually a breakdown lane when the pro pilot shuts off. I think it would be much safer that way.

It should always be referred to as automated driving. Autonomous is misleading and not accurate. SAE defines it more specifically.

So what about NISSAN using predatory battery replacement practices for gen 1 battery replacement. Priced so that your car is worth nothing as the battery cost is in most cases worth more than the car. Buyer beware. Note: In buying any EV include a one liner in your purchase contract: Purchaser will be able to purchase a replacement battery for $XXXX or less at their discretion not the manufactures. Protect yourself!!!

A good 3 part review on the Nissan 2018, how about popping over to Germany and reviewing the New Sono motor. which is a completely deferent car to current EVs!!! and affordable. ( $19,000 (exchange rate 20/12/17) )

It's definitely not a B segment car. It's a midsize hatch (similar to a loaded Toyota Matrix).

It has the makings of an autonomous car but nissan is being very careful to avoid lawsuits and appease regulatory bodies. And they are right, systems like these can still fail, so best to make sure people understand that it is not an autonomous vehicle lest they take it as one and find themselves in a ditch.

Propilot is a $2k option. It is not for good drivers or new drivers (because they need to learn how to drive properly). It would probably be for drunks and dangerous old people, and maybe young drivers that want to play chicken. Also, in a small fender bender, the tech in the bumpers would need to be repaired$$$??? Big NO for this one

S-Class was not the first car with ABS. ;)
@artokiiskinen1058
@artokiiskinen1058 6 лет назад
Well, that is correct. But the W116 was the first production car to use a system that is similar to current systems in design and construction principles. Sort of grand daddy of modern ABS.
@SvenQ45
@SvenQ45 6 лет назад
Arto Kiiskinen Yes but the Nissan President already had a 4 wheel electonic ABS in 1971.
@Phillandben
@Phillandben 6 лет назад
You will find that the British Jensen Interceptor came with four wheel drive, Dunlop Maxaret ABS and traction control in the 1967 model year but I believe it was Mercedes who used the equivalent of the four channel ABS system in common use today which was the first to market as standard.
@SvenQ45
@SvenQ45 6 лет назад
Yes I know about the Jensen Intercopter. Was this not 2 wheel ABS.
@Phillandben
@Phillandben 6 лет назад
No it worked on all four wheels but wasn’t a sophisticated 4 channel system like today. It was a mechanical system so would think it was maybe even a single channel system due to its centralised nature. It was primarily used on aircraft at the time until Jensen adopted it for use in the interceptor.
