Michael Kushneruk a lot of times when it’s self ventilated we just make a bigger hole to allow for a larger exit for Heat and smoke. This provides for rapid fire knock down and allows interior crews less of a thermal layer inside the building.

So lets risk the lives of our fellow firefighters to make a bigger hole. Just my opinion not bashing any one.

Michael Kushneruk I understand your view. This job is dangerous and risky but we make educated judgement calls to reduce the overall risks to our firefighters and civilians who are still inside this super heated atmosphere. Unfortunately this job is filled with high risks all the time, even just responding with lights and sirens to all calls has high risk, but we do the best we can for our community. Oh I know that this job is a dangerous job. Hint y I asked about ventilating when it was already self ventilated. I mean with everything today of how it is built it increases the ability for anything to happen so much higher then 15 years ago. It might just be being taught different and everything.

Zach 507...I'm not a female but it seems like a progressive department like Stockton's should be recruiting some.

We use to have some female Firefighters but have retired after long careers. I know the SFD aggressively try’s to recruit females and and folks from all walks of life but for some reason we don’t get the large numbers of females who want to be Firefighters applying to Stockton.

I concur with Zac. The fire doesn’t care who you are. You need to be strong to do this job. I’ve seen male and female fail the physical agility test. Stockton is progressive by providing the best firefighters for their tax paying citizens. (Their videos prove this time after time) When someone’s trapped they don’t care what sex, nationality, or religion you are. They just want out. To do that you need to be strong. Any place that lowers the standard to meet someone’s inability to originally complete the task is doing a disservice to the other members of the department and to the community. I’ve worked with men and women who are top notch and can do the job. I’ve also worked with men and women who can’t do the job. Women just don’t make up a huge number of firefighters. This really needs to stop being a topic or concern of being unfair to them. It’s not about being fair. It’s about providing a service to save lives. I’m gonna be too old someday to keep providing the service that the community expects. Therefore I need to accept it. And that’s ok with me.
