You guys should try to mount a camera under the hood on the turbo vehicles. It would be interesting to see if they glow red hot when you guys are working them hard up the hill.
Thats a beast of an suv. It can tow up to 9,000 pounds easy. That 5.7 is old, but not only is it reliable, it is powerful and very good for the purpose of the suv. These trucks are meant for families who go across country with their Rv’s. Still needs a redesign but I like it
Ashes 2 Ashes the new Tacoma had a bad rear diff issue and I think transmission issue too it's way better for the 2018 year my truck is 20 years old and has had less issues then my 2017 F-150 EB which is sad
Everyone always dings Toyota on their lack of " Technology Features" makes me wonder how in the hell people got by 10 years ago towing. Technology isn't making trucks tow better it's making people lazier. You don't have to backup your trailer now or put down your tailgate just hit a button. This is just more things to go wrong.
I agree, I see people all the time relying 100% on all the electronic shit in their cars. Put them in an older car without that stuff and they couldn't drive anywhere at all, let alone backup or hookup a trailer.
Jeff Borron I agree with u also the way I see it is if someone needs a computer to back there truck up too a trailer they don't need to be towing or driving a pick up they should be driving a smart car.
William Todd That's crazy! People are relying too much on electronic shift in their vehicles? They have electronically shifting transmission, there is no other way to make it shift. I put my truck in drive and the computer does the shifting and back shifting. Do you mean that everyone should be driving a manual transmission?
Jeff Borron that's true I would take reliability over fancy features we don't need. We hear people complaining about no android auto or Apple car play like are you gonne be on the damn screen every time?
Yukons and Tahoe's will constantly break down, whereas the Sequoia will maintain its dependability. I do agree with the aforementioned upgrades comment. The 5.7 liter should be coupled with at least an 8 speed transmission, preferrabily a 10 speed transmission. If you desire more horsepower/torque you can opt for Toyota's TRD supercharger, while not voiding the said warranty. The TRD supercharger addendum will yield 504HP/550 lb.ft., which is mammouth and will eclipse the inferior GM products. Toyota supersedes the inferior GM fragile entities in regards for better bang for the buck, quality, dependability, cost effectiveness and superior reputation. Much happier and more capital retained in my coffers with owning a superior Toyota.
I work for Toyota. I remember when the 2gen Tundra came out in 07. There was a couple of college guys that got into the ECU and were able to coax it to 506 horses without touching the engine, just tuning it
As someone who drives a ton at night, I think you should expand to include the headlight systems. Ford and GM have failed miserably in this category, just check the IIHS ratings. Toyota for their part has excelled, as has their sister brand Lexus. There is more to safety than what you are measuring, and good headlights is one BIG one missing. Recall the midnight Ike with the Ford F450. Maybe all future Ike's should be done in the dark? That would really be the Ultimate Ike!
Put a 4.5L Toyota V8 diesel in it with 516ft lbs of torque, the 8 speed gearbox from the Land Cruiser, rear air suspension and a 3.73 rear axle and you have a towing monster.
There's still plenty around. I doubt they'd be able to buy one, since they run at least $12K, but there's gotta be a viewer who owns one and would be willing to bring it by and do a comparison.
I towed a 26' Toyhauler trailer about 30,000 miles, with the 2000 Ford Excursion 7.3 Powerstroke, wife and I bought new. Often, at 75 MPH, it towed so well, I had to remind myself that i had 7000 pounds on a the hitch! AND, if the trailer started to sway, I just floored it and the 7.3's 500 FT Pounds of torque, just straightened it out! NEVER hit the brakes when your trailer sways!
Don't let the "Three Bubbas" mislead you. Remember, this Toyota will still be hauling loads when those equally expensive Tahoes and Expeditions are all in the junkers. Plus, the Sequoia is SAE J2807 certified for its max tow loads. Reliability and durability is where its at for me. Seems that trailer had way too much tongue weight. The Sequoia's rated tongue weight is something like 750#. Did you see a WD hitch? I have about 700# on my Sequoia's hitch and it does not squat like that. I use a WD hitch, as specified in the Sequoia manual. I have a 2008 and 2011 Seq 5.7....Great American made vehicles!
@tfl If you take a look at 12:54 you can see the independent suspension's negative camber in the rear. This is going to cause more severe tire wear on the inside edge of the rear tire. Also looking at the front you can see how light that tire is compared to the rear. I think the only way to tow with this vehicle would be with air bags to make sure it doesn't do what we are seeing in this frame on the video.
Just turned in my 192500 mile Sequoia after 12 years and four boys in hockey, lacrosse and untold trips through Vermont towing boats and ATVs and then I found a 2021 with 26715 miles…best SUV by far and looking forward to another 12 year plus run now that all the kids are finished college 😊
i am a chevy guy at heart and i think if i HAD to get somethning newer it would be a toyota because of the lack of tech. i curently have a 2001 chevy 3500 dually diesel, i love the fact it dosent have reverse cameras or really any other computer controlled crap. i get out my magnetic "hitchin sticks", connect the trailer, maybe a few seconds more when im on my game in camping season and off i go. i got AC, heat, room for everyone and good towing mirrors, what else do need??
Nitpick trying to make the sequoia seem outdated, is pointless, because when it comes to practicality it out performed every single large SUV and didn't need to downgrade shift. Brake control module isn't a deal breaker. I can get that done in less than 30 minutes. For a few hundred bucks for a top of the line. You have a reliable Toyota v8 with a track record of reliability. You have leather, navigation, sunroof, space, towing capacity and a full size third row seat.
Thank you toyota for making the best trucks and suvs on the market! But please stop ignoring the car market in terms of performance. Crap bring back the Celica! 2.0t and boom you're in competition with the younger market. Even an AWD boosted Camry or something.. Or even better, bring back the Supra and keep it true to the heritage. I digress, I've always liked the Sequoia old and new. Awesome test!
I know, but at a certain point you have to come up with something new.The scion frs/brz would have been amazing..Had it not been so slow out of the box. As far as the trucks are concerned they're awesome. I just want Toyota to adapt the TRD options to other vehicles.
James Wisrik I'm not saying they aren't reliable! Like I said in the original comment I was referring to coupes and sedans. I.e a 2019 Celica gt. If Lotus can use Toyota motors in an Elise, why not use that in a Toyota coupe?
Says it sucks and it’s old. Then says they are surprised. You guys, all of you, love technology wayyyyyy too much. I would rather have something that doesn’t break down.
Add a Hensley hitch. This will solve the Elvis Pelvis issue. I TOW a 8,000 lbs., 30 ft travel trailer with 2010 Sequoia and No sway. 9 mpg here in Michigan. No mechanical or electronics issues. Plenty of power. Very good ride quality. It's handles better than conventional straight axles. Btw.. GM and Ford have finally caught up to Toyota with IRS! Toyota will never try to keep up the electronics with the other oem's. They only use tried and true, reliable components. This is how they achieve legendary reliability.
Reliability is priceless, at the end of the day you know that that truck will do the job and get you back home. I’m amazed that in all these reviews nobody talk about reliability, and when they do long terms reviews they refer to 40,000 to 60,000 miles, probably because is where the average American cars and trucks start to have issues. Put on your American car/truck at least 400,000 miles like I have on mine with no mechanical issue and no repairs to do, than do real long term review, let’s see how well it’s hold. Toyota base their philosophy on reliability and they take it very seriously, due to that changes are slower but secure and safe, so at the end of the day the question is... what is your priority? Gadget, esthetic, reliability?
Ive always wondered why you don’t use cruise control on your way up. Thanks for answering that in this video, makes sense now! Great videos guy love it!!
U guys dog on this engine to much, you take this with 200k miles on it and all it’s competitors it will smoke them all, Toyota is built to last, not be the most powerful thing out there. Even though my 2010 tundra will smoke any new Silverado or ram and it’s got 140k on it
Owen Sanders fan boy alert. It's a nice vehicle, but you can't handle he truth. It's dated and you know it. I'd take it any day but there are better for the price. It's reliable as hell but as far as smoking, I'd have to say your smoking
I had to comment because this is my truck. It may look a little different, but looks are subjective. It might be 10 years old, but some see this as reliable because the bugs have been worked out. But this truck has the numbers where it counts if you honestly want to tow a descent trailer. For starters it has a 10.5" ring gear out back with 36 spline shafts. This is 2500 series territory. The front is a 9" which again is larger than any 1500 series truck as far as I know. The engine is as reliable as a nail. Sure it does not have direct injection but to some this is a blessing as they will not have to pay for valve cleaning in the future. It will also make its advertised power on regular pump gas which can't be said for most trucks these days. It has an amazing Aisin transmission with a warmer and cooler to keep the trans temp the same as the engine coolant temp. I tow my 6500lb travel trailer the gauge never moves. Also, and this is one of the neatest things. It has a transfer case with a Torsen limited slip. So you can run in high or low range and do figure eights without binding. This is amazing for maneuvering your trailer up steep driveways or on grass/gravel camping spots. And yes it does have the center diff lock for true part time 4WD. I also like that the rear window rolls down so my dogs can hang their head out the window. The IRS is also great for towing just get the air suspension or put your damn equalizer bars on so the rear doesn't squat so bad. All these SUV's have coil springs now. They will all squat IRS or not. No I am not a Toyota fanboy. This is my first one. I am a Chevy fanboy if anything. However when I was shopping the Toyota had everything I wanted for the best price by FAR. I bought the Platinum model for less than a mildly equipped GMC Tahoe. There was a $20,000 price difference when comparing feature to feature. Then I read a lot of negative stuff about the big 3 having issues with their infotainment systems so I said forget it I'll get the Toyota. So far so good!
Wildman seems I remember Chevy did a lot of 2500 series trucks without full floating axles Hope you were there to beat on them as well lol. as for the 5.7 it's 1 of most reliable engines out there don't know where you got your information from. As for the 430 gear ratio What's the 1st thing you're gonna do when you put a set a bigger tires on your rig with the set of 345 gears you're going to be change the gears
I have a Tundra and I love it. I got a lot of truck for 7k less than the Ford similarly equipped and 9k less than the Chevy/GMC trucks. My truck is 5 years old and still holding its value better than the others.
The thing you guys don’t realize and you should drive home to your viewers more because most people don’t know. Is that the Chevy Tahoe and the Yukon are both crummy GM vehicles that will not last 250,000 miles on original parts not a chance. This Toyota will go half 1,000,000 miles with an original transmission and original engine with just basic maintenance. I don’t want them to update it with all that new technology because all that crap just breaks later on and you’re gonna have to pay for it out of warranty. What you guys don’t realize is that when you buy a truck all you really care about is reliability and Toyota does that best.
Hey TFL, if you're listening... I guess long term reliability has nothing to do with your rating system totals right? I've literally watched dozens of your towing tests. I love them - you cover almost everything there is to cover. Hats off to you! BUT you rarely talk about long term reliability. Just curious about why? Most Toyota buyers don't make their final decision on tech or luxury gizmos.... They do it because they know it will stand the test of time for years to come. Tell me, are they wrong?? How can that not realistically be worth a few points? It has to be - look at the resale value of a 10 year old Sequoia vs a 10 yr old Tahoe. There's a big difference, nobody can deny that. People hang on to the Toyotas long term because they will last forever. I'm curious... Is it because perhaps you feel the domestic buyers (as you referenced near the end of this vid) don't make their final decision based on that? Just curious... Keep up the great work - I love watching your channel!
everyone is talking about toyota reliability which it’s cool but the lack of designs doesn’t attract a lot of people specially the young people who wanna buy a car that is reliable & looks cool .
I think without a weight distribution hitch set-up your tests are skewed towards SUV's with more rugged suspensions, than ones geared towards ride comfort as in the Toyota. No one would tow a 7k trailer without adding a WD hitch. A WD hitch would flatten out the trailer / SUV angle thus changing wind drag. One thing to check for is measuring off the frame of the trailer to the ground. You want about an 1" less in the front of the trailer than the rear. If your sagging 4-5" on the nose of the trailer, your aerodynamics are greatly increasing drag.
Bryan E Bryan E I'm sure the engineers have it all figured out...but considering probably 99% of these vehicles, 99% of the time, are going to be used around town and on the highway without towing, a 4.30 ratio means a lot of extra engine RPMs (higher wear, lower MPG) during very ordinary usage.
Saying a Chevy is better than a Toyota because it has more tech is very silly.. in 8 years you will be sitting on the side of the road with more tech as the Toyota passes you.
Everything isn't about towing. If you want a towing rig, buy one with a solid axle. An independent is great for comfort. Does toyota brag about this model for being the ultimate towing rig? Probably not.
pelleper my grandfather has a 15 work truck grade tundra with a 8' bed and rides like butter on the roads. Im not saying that the independent set up is not comfortable I'm saying that if it had a solid it would be just as good yet more capable
There is a hill by my house with a speed trap at the bottom. Without a trailer and without tow/haul mode, it still shifts down one when I tap the brakes. I don't tow anything and I call that the "TOW/HAULass" button.
"Sequoia is a true SUV!!! Sequoia is the best SUV money can buy, because it's the most reliable and people will never have an issue with turbos because there's none, and people will never have carbon build up because it doesn't have direct injection like competitors. It's not rice burner with turbo. It's not a Prius with Auto start/stop. It's not a iPhone on wheels that needs to reset by the dealer every 6 months and replaced every couple years because of the issues. It's reliable SUV that can go 500k miles without touching engine or transmission. Also, it's simple, reliable, comfortable and holds it's value better than any other SUV. Great on gas for its size."
Snake Plissken , people who buy Toyota, is because of the quality. Calling someone a foolish because they prefer quality over the problems, not very smart. If it's not broken why fix it? You never owned a Sequoia and probably never owned Toyota, saying it's bad on gas is incorrect. Toyota 5.7 will consume more fuel than 5.3 because it's bigger and a lot more powerful. What you save on fuel economy with new GM you spend on repairs and Oil because they consume a lot of Oil.
repairvehicle I've owned more turbocharged cars than NA cars and never had a turbo fail on me and all of them have been tuned while running higher than stock boost. Maintenance and oil changes are key for turbos not failing.
200,000 on a ford and GM is time to start looking for a new vehicle. My Toyota has 400,000 and is a daily driver and everything still works, including all the buttons, never had any major issue, it just keeps running.
Hey Andre, if the Ike is the toughest tow challenge, why is the SAE J2807 tow rating standard that manufactures use, that sets a minimum speed for the truck-trailer combination (40 mph) when climbing a specific mountain grade - done at the so-called "Davis Dam" grade that climbs eastward out of the Colorado River Valley at Laughlin, Nevada? Cooling systems must bear the strain of the 11-mile trip when the outside temperature is at least 100 degrees and the air-conditioner is set to full blast. I'm a Patreon, and overall supporter of the channel, but come'on, other than elevation... towing in winter. meh. Here in AZ, towing in heat is serious. We have many significant grades too at elevation. ;-) I sense collusion here. And don't take that shit about shifting the SM465. Those things are tanks that last forever, but you can't shift them quick!!!
The Sequoia is a Toyota Tundra but with a SUV design rather than a truck bed...so why would you be surprised it has the same axle ratio as the Tundra. Your right nothing changes with Toyota. Why? Because what they build works, why change something that works? Unlike the other car manufacturers that change shit every year to hid problems from the previous years is why people are fed up with car makers...hell even some change in the middle of a model year making it a headache for parts suppliers. Wonder when they'll throw the 8 speed auto from the Land Cruiser into the Tundra and Sequoia. Why doesn't it have a trailer brake controller? Because many never tow anything, they buy SUV's and Trucks for family sedans that do nothing but shuttle kids to and from all their after school functions and hit curbs at Walmart. So, why put something in that'll never be used by the masses.
Is there midsize SUV Ike Gauntlet? Or large crossover Ike Gauntlet? Like 2018 Ford Expedition vs 2018 Chevrolet Traverse. Or like 2018 Honda pilot vs 2018 Ford Explorer.
Mine just turned 100k miles and runs and drives like new. I’ve only done brakes, tires, and fluid changes. Behind the times for sure but I’m guessing I’ll get 300k our of the motor.
A video on the Jeep Wranglers would be nice. Compare how the 2 door and 4 door tow with the new 2018 Jeep. There’s practically no videos on towing with Jeep Wranglers. It would be nice to have you guys do one.
Mpg score shouldnt have a point standard. You should be awarded 1pt for every 0.2mpg so that the really efficient vehicles dont get "penalized" for being too efficient. Other than that keep up the great work guys! Hurry up and get your hands on the 3.0l diesel silverado!
hmmm, as used here, the unit used for Torque was devised by the Brits, who state it as "ft-lbs", not "lbs-ft". "ft-lbs" is the world norm, so why deviate? the unit results from lbs x ft, or ft x lbs. 2x3=6. 3x2=6. got it? better yet, use metric.
New Grill?? I love Toyota but that grill is identical for the 07-13 tundra and Sequoia. Also the center gauges where climate control are located all also the same as those model years. I know the Tundra is rumoured to have a rebuild in 2021 let’s hope this does as well. They really need to step up their game and get with the times. Very disappointing!
I agree man, they don't like innovating because it can cause reliability issues like the big 3 trucks. The big 3 trucks are ridiculous with new tech and features though.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. This thing will outlive any of it's competition times 3. Gotta admit though, these MPG numbers are quite low. That's definitely something to whine about. Most of it probably comes from the now very old 6 speed transmission. If it was an 8 or 10 speed it would do quite a bit better overall.
Milan Parekh Yeah man I have an 07 Tundra with 360,000kms and love it. I stand by them with reliability and brag them up to everyone but looking at this truck just makes me instantly think they just pushed it out and said the hell with it.
Frank White I agree with you most of the way man I love my Tundra and agree it will outlast any of the others hands down but that shouldn’t change the fact they can add some features and change the interior around. That Grill really pisses me off. It’s like they had an abundance sitting around and they decided to use them!
Frank White I agree with you. However, in regards with fuel mileage, I'm not worried about fuel mileage if I'm towing, or in general with a truck. It's a truck, not a Prius haha! I know it's not going to be good. Now here in PA, I've towed my 4,000 pound '86 T-Bird with my '16 Silverado and was getting 13.5 mpg in city driving with only a 6-speed 327 (5.3), which is very impressive to me. In my opinion, however, I'm more worried about durability of the truck and what it can handle as a truck. Worrying about fuel mileage can stick with hybrid owners haha! But man, this Toyota should have kept a solid rear axle. That squat is horrible, and the amount of wear that rear is going to have isn't going to be favorable.
IMO there’s nothing wrong with the 6 speed transmission. 10 speeds have more moving parts. Yeah you get more ratios to choose from but you can’t beat that 4th gear in that tranny.
So the sequoia climbed a little faster than "18 Armada and Titan? ...and it used about same amount of fuel in your test. The 8 speed transmission from the landcruiser/lx570 in this sequoia will make it a lil better, just a lil.
My wife and I test drive one of these and when the guy handed use a key. My wife was like is this the 90’s? I mean a key and separate unlock pad. Everything felt old and outdated inside too.
zack portner you install your own it's plug and play basically lots of options my dads Tundra has a controller for 3 axles under it and it seems my Fords will only lock up 1 axle on a trailer with 2 sets of breaks
Man, that’s a lot of engine and money for only being able to pull 7,000#. Didn’t it have more capacity when it had a solid rear axle? No brake controller, no Car Play, Android Auto, IRS? Come on Toyota, you’re losing me. I think I’ll by a GMC Canyon Diesel to town my little trailers.
Bill Sprague I don't mind not having tech less issues my Ford is totally full of tech and 50% of the break downs are tech and the others are Turbos or coolant lines
The expedition will definitely be in the shop needing fixed first. So it will win at that I guess. I wish ford would work on their reliability because they make some nice vehicles with impressive power numbers.
