Ive been asked a number of times if I still like this scope as a budget oriented option. Ive now got about 2yrs worth of shooting behind these scopes and give my updated review! FAV Scale 4.0/6.0
FFP is more for accurate hold overs and ranging your miss. Milling a target is not a priority to most folks. Being able to hold over on all magnifications is priceless. You can shoot a match without dialing once.
Appreciate the honesty. Like the video - Bought one awhile back. It's quality. Comparisons will be made, but agree that for the money, It's a darn good scope. It's great on my RPR, and does every job I have needed it to do so far.
The very first VX-1 I had I mounted on a 308 remmington 700....first shot to second shot it jumped about six feet to the left and hit the guy next to me's target...i dialed it right, fired, hit the center...four shot jumped all the way over again....it seems the teeth were stripped out. I called Leupold and started to describe my issue he cut me off and said "yeah we have had that happen a lot, just send it in" . Awesome customer service and it was all handled so I can't say enough about them....but the fact he new EXACTLY what was wrong and said it "happens a lot" suggests to me that "you never hear about it" is just because people are not talking?
I agree with you I've also noticed that once you get past 18x the clarity starts to go down and the clicks are not as audible or tactile but for the money it's a good scope and if you pick up one used off of eBay like I did it's definitely worth the money. But if I was somebody who competed in PRS I think I would eventually spend the extra money and upgrade to something better with a true zero stop and better glass quality. But for a hobbyist/ Long range hunter or someone just getting into the sport it's a good scope for the price.
@@TheHide I must had fotten lucky with about 5 other friends when we got our scope like yours. All of ours are clear at full magnification out to a 1000yds. Now I'm not saying your lieing by all means. I had 2 vortex scopes both the new gen2 viper. One was clear as a whistle and other started getting foggy looking at 16 power
Excellent follow up. Considering an Athlon for the rpm due to arrive next week. Also. The vx3i lrp was setup by Trident Armory on my norma. Dialed in at 750 yrd zero. Got to make a 2 hr drive to range it. Will be in touch h to see if I get the same tracking results as you. Keep shooting and God Bless
I just sent a Leupold back for warranty a week ago, but I get what you're saying and generally agree with everything (not that I'm an Optics Expert). I would like to state that the Leupold I sent back was made in the 1980s and I got it in trade a couple of years ago. They are going to fix it or replace it. That is fantastic customer service. It seems like Athlon is attempting the same warranty model, which I think is great!
Have one on my Savage Mk.2 rimfire. Performs well, very accurate. Clean out the excess grease in the turrets to make clicks feel crisper. Replace grease with a light gun oil.
Thanks for the review. Based on your experience, it looks like i did right on buying this for a budget .224 Valkyrie build. I am receiving it today. I was looking for an inexpensive platform to get me familiar with long range optics and learning the mil dot system. I also wanted a ffp optic to range find with. Decent ammo for .224 is pretty inexpensive as well compared to 6.5 creedmoor. I was going to purchase a 6.5 creedmoor long gun this holiday season but think i will wait till next year and save for nice optic. Im interested in seeing how tactile the turrets are when my optic comes in. I have seen recent reviews that state they have a decent tactile feel. I'm wondering if mushy turrets have been fixed since 2016. I am happy about the lifetime warranty. If they are mushy, im going to call customer support. I'm also happy that from all accounts it holds zero. UPDATE: I got the optic in last night and it appears they either fixed the mushy turrets or i got lucky. I wouldn't go as far as saying they removed all the mush if you compare to that luepold, but each turn has a nice tactile feel and a quiet clicking noise. Obviously not going to be as good as a 2000 optic.
Appreciate your comment about FFP vs SFP! I was set on SFP but with several comments on the web that FFP is way better has messed up my searches.. so going SFP and out to 1,000yds + what in your opinion is the better optics with a $700 budget ??
I would take a look at the Nikon FX1000 and the Burris XTR in your price range would make a great optic! I will say as far as SFP vs FFP goes unless your actively ranging off your reticle every shot, I don't think FFP is needed.. Spend the money youd put in that and get better glass or other features you may use. Thanks for watching!
I totally agree with you. I bought a Helos (which is the same scope with locking turrets) last year and feel exactly the same way. You can definitely do better as far as glass quality but it tracks true and it will get you shooting. If you have the chance, look at the Tract toric 30mm scopes. I just bought one and I think you'd be pleasantly surprised. I have a Leupold mark 4, nightforce shv and an ATAC-R and the Tract is every bit as good if not better at a lower price point.
I've sent back 3 Leupold's and they came back perfect with the old caps replaced on all three to boot. Once you get over 10X on most any 50mm objective, they will all fall off a bit...some just fall off a little more than others.
Every bushnell i have owned was horrible. I will admit i have bought a bushnell in well over 15yrs, because they sucked. So i buy once cry once now. I do own 2 Athlon scopes and so far i am happy. I own high end burris, trijicon, aimpoints, eotechs etc.... I have an old Pentax lightseeker (high end burris XTR) that has been beat to hell and never had to resight it in. The 2 Athlons i own are on my daughters 17hmr, and one of my coyote hunting AR is the Athlon Talos.
Appreciate the review. I agree that you have to define what you’re needs and expectations are taking the price point into consideration. Is it as good as higher end glass, no, but your not spending $1500 either. It is all relevant.
For me, FFP is not a must. The Athlon Midas Btr 4.5-27x50 is SFP; an upgrade in Athlon line; Athlon glass (HD); Much better Eye Relief (3.9 inch vs. 3.3 inch); can now be purchased for less than $400.00 rather than the $709 MSRP. That being said, I haven't gotten it yet because that FFP Nikon Black FX1000 6-24x50 is what I have targeted as my next purchase. Being on the short side, I have learned to stay away from scopes with less than 3.5 inch Eye Relief ( my Athlon Talos 6-24x50; near constant 3.0" ) at any point in the magnification range, unless I'm mounting it on a rimfire rifle. I'm also staying away from scopes where the Eye Relief has more than a (0.7 inch) swing from minimum to maximum magnification. The Bushnell Trophy Xtremes spoiled me.
Yea i just believe FFP is oversold as an option to shooters. I just rather not have it and have a bit better glass than options Ill never need. Thanks for watching!
FFP works really well for doing holdovers. Other than that if you are just out there to target plink and not shoot in matches it is not needed and SFP will work just fine.
theitalian556 could you still use SFP in matches for ranging if you have it dialed to full power on like a 4-14? Or would that be to Much power trying to think at the range always seems like I'm at full power anyway
I'm new to these kind of optics. One of the reasons i got ffp was for hold overs. I'm glad you commented this. I'm sure its not important in a long range match where you have time to dial everything in but using the reticle for quick corrections is important to me.
Yea it really boils down to what your wanting to do with the optic and how much your really willing to spend. Me for what I do I just can justify having a $2k scope to just mess around here at The Hide and shoot a couple matches a year. Id rather use that money on other stuff. Thanks for watching!
Howdy, just came across this video and your channel. Subscribed! I just picked up my M1A just like yours except in FDE. I am looking to get the same Argos for it as well. Can you tell me what size rings you’re using? Being new to M1A, can you put a scope mount on it or only rings? I just installed a Sadlak mount, but I’m not sure what height rings to get to keep the scope low. Also, what size lens caps are you running?
I mostly agree with you. The argos is my 1st endeavor with ffp. I really like it. I have been looking at getting another Athlon, the Midas tac. The capped windage and zero stop elevation knob look good to me. It also has the HD glass so I'm hoping the clarity at higher magnification is better. Have you seen it or used it?
Yea i just think FFP is oversold as an option. Most guys will never use it as its intended. As for the Midas no I haven't really looked at any other Athlon products after the endeavor I had with the Ares I had. Other than the Argos or maybe the 4-16 Talos I probably wont be getting in any other Athlon Products... Thanks for watching!
it's funny, i have the exact same rifle that I'm looking for a scope for. Trying to decide between the Athlon 8-34 x 56, Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25x50, or the Sig Tango4 6-24x50. This would be my first FFP. Now you have me second guessing. All my other scopes are SFP. My budget is $1000, and I want at least a 24 power x 50
I can pick one up for 289.99. I have a vortex diamondback tactical sfp 4x12x40 and am happy with it for hunting. I'm upgrading my second hunting rifle and am thinking about this scope or another diamondback. Any thoughts?
@@richardlee4438 I personally dont care for Athlon as a company but I know a lot of guys like their products. For the price spent they do hold a lot of value.
Yea it would probably do ok, just know that its kind of a heavier scope so you may want something a little lighter weight if your going to be toting it around a lot in the field. Thanks for watching!
LOL. You said Leupold. I just bought an $800 Leupold and it sucks in comparison to my new Argos. In functionality and CLARITY. don’t compare apples to oranges. I’d have to spend nearly $2000 on a Leupold to get a better scope than this. At which time I would just buy an Athlon Ares or Chronus. Which makes your statement about this entry level (for a FFP) Athlon scope “their best scope” extremely odd.....
@@TheHide He is not wrong. see above about my first VX-1. The fact that companies like Vortex and Athlon stand behind their products is great, so does leupold when their stuff breaks...and it does. Many companies can and do say "pound salt" when it comes to gun stuff, its not a negative that they say they don't.
@@Johnyrocket70 SWFA makes great scopes but you're not going to get a feature to feature match until SWFA's 5-20x50 scopes, which sell for $1,300 - $1,500.
Hello Friend. Sadly I currently reside off the grid and have not been able to upload for some time. In previous comments I mention a ruger precision in 6.5cm and the leupold vx 3i lrp 8.5-25x50mm. Both are here . I have used 4 factory ammos you have fired in your reviews. Here is my question. Is the Athlon Argos ffp scope the nest bang @ the 300 price point for general site in and basic testing to 500yards? Reason I ask, I'm not about to be swapping this leupold around for the sake of testing. YOUR OPINON MATTERS!. Honest reviews are hard to come by. Thank you much and keep doing what you do.
If your in the market for a sub-$400 optic it really is tough to beat the Argos BTR. For what your getting the feature, glass and reticle are well worth the buying price in the Argos.. I've shot the Argos here out to 600yrds with no trouble at all so I'm sure it would serve you well. With that said, Id still take my Leupold over it lol. Thanks for watching and the support!
The reply is much appreciated. Ditto on the leupold lrp. The RPR 6.5 CM is banging couples and triples same hole. Not about to be swapping the scope out. As you have stated getting a tax driver is hit or miss with factory guns. I'm going to go for that Argos. Preciate the opinion advice and your time. God Bless.
