I was worried about range anxiety. I have a 40 mile round trip commute and a 16 e-golf. It has never been a problem for me, even when using only the included level 1 charger. I charge during the 5 hour off peak rates each night, paying only $0.096/kWh. I end up getting about 6.5 kWh overnight, and that’s about 35 miles of range. By the end of the week my morning range is approximately 65 miles, plenty for the commute. I also have free charging options at work (level 1 and 2). I’ve only used the level 1 so far. My wife still has a Jetta SportWagen for longer trips. If the car is a local commuter, there really isn’t a need for more than 80-100 miles of range if you have a garage for charging.

I don't know why we did not get the GTE instead in Canada with all the cold weather... the hybrid was the best choice in my opinion... the egolf when it's -25°C can drop to around 90km of autonomy with a full charge... the only thing missing for electric car is large battery banks... when the egolf get 60-80kw battery back, we will get 600km range, 300 maybe in cold weather and we can get extreme performance from such a golf, it could crush many petrol car in performance... but nope... instead we get 38kw battery, weak range, so-so performance... I do drive a 2016 golf tsi, I love the performance and under the right condition, I can do near 700km with one tank of fuel but usually, I get around 500-600km range, 0-100 in the 7ish sec. This is what I would like to get with an electric car... But by the time my lease is ending, I think there will be no more egolf and it will be replaced by the ID line of electric products... I read many new battery technology are happening in labs but none of these batteries are to be found in any products... it's like it's too soon for electric cars... Hybrid, the golf GTE, would be the best choice in my opnion... electric but backed up by petrol engine, nice performance (pretty close to a gti) and no range anxiaty like in this video title which is totally false... a car giving me 90km range in cold weather at 37000$... as much as I want an electric golf, that's not going to happend for me...

No matter what produces the fuel/energy, you can always have range anxiety (in the right circumstances). I used to ride my GPZ900 back to my Army barracks on a Sunday in the early 1980’s. In the UK in those days, most fuel stations were not open 24/7 (with many closed on sundays too). Journey 280 miles. Range with a full tank about 100 miles... yes range anxiety existed then. And a few times I ended up pushing to a fuel station and waiting till morning for it to open.

Drove this back to back with the 2017 Leaf, i3, and Bolt...this has the most utility, highest quality, most comfort for 4 full size adults, and least quirky...also well priced.

@alexstern3583

Unfortunately I don't know how much our energy bill went up because we moved into our house the same month we leased the EV, but most people see $12 to $50/month extra. The Soul EV is supposed to get 108 MPGe so either way it's more efficient than any gas car. Also in most states you can get a discount on your bill if you tell them you have an EV.

Serious question here: what’s to stop someone from unplugging your car or fooling with the charger at a charging station or retail place that has chargers? Do you have to babysit it all the time?
@EverydayReviews2022
@EverydayReviews2022 6 лет назад
Good question - Answer is that the charger locks in when you lock the door of your car. You can't pull it off

Not everyone that buys a hybrid or electric car wants the strange looks that it comes with. I know looks are subjective but why can't electric and hybrid cars have the same cool look as the sport model or internal combustion engine counterpart? Update: although this was addressed in the video, it still has the look of an electric vehicle. which isn't always that flattering - I think they are still trying to distinguish it with a different type of styling.

Studies have shown that even though the e-golf does not have a liquid cooled/heated battery, the degradation is actually quite good. Overall, though, I would choose liquid cooled over passive cooling if available.

Yeah, in other word: waiting for a VW that can compete with a Chevrolet. Oh, did you forget? VW lied about their emissions and how good (resp. how bad) their engines are. And you still trust them? Really?
@davetravels9273
@davetravels9273 7 лет назад
+manoman0 In real-world tests, GM's diesels, which are mostly sold outside of the U.S., have been found to be very similar to VW's. It should also be noted that VW's NOx emission levels have been found to be amongst the lower ones, mercedes is the best (the E220 cdi is in fact the cleaneast non-bybrid or EV in the world), then BMW, while FCA, Nissan-Renault and Volvo are the worst. The difference is that VW, Mercedes and BMW sell most of the diesels in the U.S. but just about everyone does outside of the U.S. However, it doesn't really matter where the emissions are produced, we all share the same atmosphere in the end. BTW perhaps you didn't hear that GM and FCA are also under investigation by the EPA (though they will probably not be hit as hard under this administration) and Renault-Nissan are under investigation in Europe (but will also probably not be punished as hard, due to their financial weakness).

They are not limited in Ontario. They may have pre sold their allotment but my saying they are limiting number in Ontario is like saying that if 1000 people wanted E Golfs, they wouldn't sell it to them because they limited the numbers. Just like any other model, especially one that is new to the market that doesn't have a sales history, the manufacture in this case VW Canada will try and predict demand and order that amount but also being conservative since they don't want unsold cars having around at dealerships. Same thing happened when the Golf R came out. My friend missed out on the online pre order but just put a deposit on one yesterday and he will most likely get one from the first batch. There will be more cars than just the pre orders.
@smartelectriccar
@smartelectriccar 7 лет назад
My friend works for VW/Audi. The corporate policy is to limit EV Sales in Canada. It is more profitable to sell in Germany than Canada for these cars, so they deliberately limit. New orders are 8+ months away or more now that the first batch of 250 are spoken for. The other example is the e-tron which sold out 300 cars and dealers stopped taking orders.

Does it have what kills batteries in an extremely hot climate, battery cooling / battery management/ heating and cooling with that the battery will last an huge amount of mileage/ km more than a petrol engine. I live in what can be an incredible hot climate, this car has to have battery management/ cooling like a Tesla

@JustWasted3HoursHere
@JustWasted3HoursHere 4 года назад
EVs are not for everyone. They only meet the needs of 95% of the population... ;) But seriously, the average person actually drives less than 30 miles per day and you can fast charge at a charging station if necessary on those rare occasions when you need more range. But if you find you regularly need more than 100 miles of range, then there are higher range EVs out there (any Tesla, Audi e-Tron, Jaguar i-Pace and so on). Most people who take the EV plunge find that range anxiety disappears quite quickly once you actually drive the car on a regular basis.
@bnkwupt
@bnkwupt 7 лет назад
Very nice video, and I'm glad to see the new model getting more range. I just have one issue with the video, which is what do you mean "it doesn't look like an electric car?" What does an electric car look like? Do you mean it doesn't have a bizarre or quirky design like a Nissan LEAF, a Think City, or some hopped up golf cart? Electric propulsion doesn't have to fundamentally change the way a vehicle looks. Take the Kia Soul EV, Fiat 500e, e-Golf, Toyota RAV4 EV, the Chevy Spark... they all look like their gas-powered counterparts, which are all normal looking cars. I guess what I'm getting at is "electric" is not a synonym of quirky or unconventional. It doesn't make sense to describe a vehicle as looking like an electric car.

Cooper 2004 you do realize that electric vehicles have almost no maintenance costs right? Brakes last longer, no oil changes, no transmission fluids, no radiator fluids, no gasoline which means no fuel pumps. Also, they’re digital dials because there are almost no moving parts lol, even if they did put dials in there it would be “fake” dials. Digital screens are more versatile either way you can have more information and more accurate information at a glance. You must be getting old or something if you want to keep dials around lol learn to embrace new technology

What's odd is that this car with 36Kwh battery only goes around 200km but the IONIQ with a less 28kwh battery can go 220km? Yet the IONIQ is a bigger car? efficiency? And the ZOE with an extra 5Kwh at 41KWh can go 280km? it gets confusing lol
@kej84

That is because 36Kwh is the gross capacity of the Golf battery. And 28KWh is the net capacity of the IONIQ battery. The gross capacity of the IONIQ is about 32Kwh. And the IONIQ is extremely efficient.

Wheww! The one thing holding back e-cars is fixed on this. It looks like a gas car! Man the stigma of having a electric vehicle, especially one that is designed to be more spacious or efficient but makes it look different, is now over. Thank you VW.

Actually these reviewers know plenty, but at the top of that list is they won't keep getting luxury vacations paid by the car companies if they are the least bit critical. If it didn't work that way he would have at least mentioned how VW treats the suckers that buy their cars when they have a problem warranty or otherwise.

@hugopnabais

(not every single day) sometimes yes, sometimes even more than 400km, so the 200km range would be an anxiety problem! And when I need to drive over 200 km I don't want to stop and wait 1 hour to refill my batteries! Last week I did a working round trip of 700Km without stopping to refuel with my diesel! If I needed to refill my tank it would take less than 10 minutes!

Electric won't beat gas or diesel powered cars until we start seeing ranges of at least 500km at affordable prices. My 1.8t golf gets 600km from a full tank of gas, and that's mixed highway and city driving. If I did exclusively highway Maybe 650km-700km
@johnmacward
@johnmacward 7 лет назад
At this stage it's more a moral question of keeping our planet alive than how much range someone can go. Driving 600km straight is simply insane and virtually no one does it without numerous breaks in between.
@eastcoastdriving5598
@eastcoastdriving5598 7 лет назад
You're traveling someplace where it's not far enough away to fly at least in a practical sense, and while it takes less then 10 minutes to fill your car with a tank of gas, just using the e-golf as an example it takes 30 minutes just to get an 80% charge, and I don't know about you, but a range of 200km is not good enough for me, there are days where I easily drive more then 200km in a day, my normal commute to and from work ads up to 60km.

John Ward moral question is why are 40,000 kids digging cobalt for our EV and cell phone batteries and helping to destroy the rainforests of Africa - lungs of the planet! #vehicleobesity us consumerism gone mad. 16 year old Audi still gets 100 mpg imp after 1/4 million miles and can run on waste.

John Ward I wouldn't mind an ev, but a huge issue for me is my house doesn't have a garage or carport. No way in hell will I leave a car plugged in in the north east where it rains/snows just as often as it is a clear day.
@TekAutomatica
@TekAutomatica 7 лет назад
East coast Driving long range commuting requires high energy density. A 30kwh battery weighs around 1/3 tonne. It will get you a reliable 100miles in winter when new at low highway speeds. Compare that to the weight of 1 gallon imp of diesel for same range in a 16 year old Audi a2 1.2tdi or Lupo ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GkU5OjMw0Os.html

You can have a nicer interior - it costs you range. And exactly this answers why the Bolt has more range, much more range and lower quality interior. Volkswagen can't do it better. That is a fact.

"You can have a nicer interior - it costs you range" Can you explain that? "And exactly this answers why the Bolt has more range," The Bolt has a 60kWh battery (Golf only 35kWh) "Volkswagen can't do it better." The Golf is a converted ICE-car, there is not that much room for a big battery.
@manoman0
@manoman0 7 лет назад
You cannot have it both ways: Range AND perfect materials in the interior without higher costs. Not possible. Not for GM, not for VW, not for Tesla. Those applauding the germans for making so fantastic EV's or PHEV look twice....they are more "Schein" than "sein" and for sure not better. Please excuse me if my initial comment wasn't clear. And yes, I might have been a bit hard on the VW e-golf. Just a bit.

I was the same way at first, but they've grown on me, I just wish they were bigger diameter. In fact they look awesome as 18's with lower profile tires, but they are high quality, easy to clean and very distinctive like the C shaped Tron-like LED running lights. I've had my eGolf for almost 3 years now and Love it! And I came from an R32. It's a nice dynamic drive, high quality interior and very solid build. Charges super fast on CCS, and feels much quicker than the numbers say. And for me a big advantage to the eGolf is that it can seat 5 and still has a full size trunk. Can't wait until they give it 200+ range while running on standard performance tires.

Thanks for the correction. That's certainly better than 83 but still absurdly low. I feel like the tech for pure EV is almost there, they just need to get the pricing down/expand the market for cars with 250-300+ mile ranges. Hybrids running with 600-700+ mile range seem more feasible in the interim.
@jimmyw7530
@jimmyw7530 7 лет назад
Agreed, I would love an EV for our second car. Until they make one that can match our little Skoda that gets an average of 42mpg (5.7 l/100) and over 700km to a tank it is indeed unfeasible.

WHAT IS THIS "No Range Anxiety" WHAT????? Is less than 120 miles on a single charge not a big compromise. IF this was a HYBRID e-golf with a base Electric range of 120 Miles then that would have been a great car without range Anxiety since refueling would have been an option. BUT THIS IS JUST AN ALL ELECTRIC VW with a shitty 80 Miles to boot. No wonder why half a million people are just waiting for a TESLA MODEL 3 - it will have a range of 200-Miles minimum and costs less than the golf. Hahahaha - No Compromises???? What crap is that Everyday Reviews???

@kevinisawake
@kevinisawake 7 лет назад
FIXED - thanks. But still, 120 miles full electric cars are rubbish if they are not hybrids. Full electric cars should have 200 miles minimum range for any manufacturer - that's all I am saying. Its an OK start for them but I will wait for the 250 - 300 mile Model 3 for cheaper price.
@jadendesveaux7452
@jadendesveaux7452 7 лет назад
Kevin CCIE for some people 120miles is just fine but I will agree the public will start getting behind EV's once they have at least 200miles of range like the model 3 that's why it has 400,000 preorders people are open to EV's they just have to have that highway long distance travelling capability.
