2019-2023 Ford Ranger 5ft bed BAK Tonneau cover installation 

The 2020 Ford Ranger short bed requires and extra step BEFORE any of this installation. There is a small plastic bag with 4 steel support brackets, 2 for the front of the cargo bed, 2 for the rear (the smaller ones are for the rear). These must be bolted into the existing holes BEFORE you begin installation. The two rear ones have to slip into a small slit in the rear above the taillight and then screwed in. Also, take care when installing the two rubber tubes in-between the bed and the cab for the first step of installing the top rail in the front, if you drop them, they fall into the BLACK HOLE in-between the cab and the bed and you'll need a coat hanger and about an hour of wasted time to fish it out. Otherwise, plan on about 3 hours and two people to install this cover.

MX4: you're going to need 3/16ths metal shims to stuff in between the plastic side rail and the actual bed rail. I used 12" 'mending plates' from lowes/home depot; they are .17 thick, but that's enough. BAK has a kit for the ranger, but all that contains is more foam, rubber, and some brackets that aren't thick enough to prevent bending of your rail; it's useless.

First off, Thanks for the Video. There is A Lot that I have to say about it though! I Think that the Product Overall is a Very Well Made One and Hopefully I get a Good Life of Use Out of It! If you have just purchased the "Top Of The Line BakFlip Mx4, "Do NOT ONLY Rely Only on This Video of the G2 For Installation Assistance" This Video is Well Done for the G2 I suppose, BUT NOT for the MX4!!!! First off, you MUST NOT attempt to install the bed rails UNTIL you have installed the 4 Black Powder Coated Steel Adapter pieces which come with the kit, 2 for the Front and Two for the Tailgate area! There is also the issue of Shims or "Spacers" and when I read all of the info about these, I did not even know where the spacers were to be installed until I actually Attempted the install myself. The Spacers are Imperative as your Sheet metal bed will only give way to the clamps and NOT Grab if you don't use spacers. I have been a Mechanic for 40 Years and totally wasted my time trying to put the bed rails in first after ONLY watching the G2 @2019 Ranger Video Above!! A Video of the MX4 must be made for those who need the help if Possible! I figured it out but it was a SOLID 6 Hours of pretty good Labor but after being finished, I know that I have a product that is better done than anyone else could have done it ! I used some Stainless shim stock as I worked in a machine shop but you can use any type of Hard Rubber or Metal Shims Between the Bed Steel Rails and the Plastic Rail Covers so your clamps can sit snugly on your installation. The Sheet metal Rails WILL CRUSH id you DO NOT use the Spacers Sorry to be so Long Winded but it was necessary so you do NOT Waste Your Time!! I hope that this was Helpful and Do Not Return the Item as it is of Good Quality but just Needs the Shim Kit and all will be A-Okay. The Stuff is included now and has instructions which are good so go for it!!!!! GOOD LUCK in Your Installation!

I definitely agree with J Johnson below. There are adapter plates and shims required in the install not mentioned in the video. I spent several hours trying to get the adapter plates in due to having a spray in bedliner that was in the bolt holes. Also worth nothing that 4 different instruction pages came from BAK. 3 of which all mentioned similar parts of the installation (shims) and all contradicted each other. Reading through ALL of the materials and deciding what is accurate took a lot of time as well. I ended up putting the clamps on the adapter plates and only shimming the middle even though one of the guides said to shim them all. Hopefully it will all work out okay :) I spent way more time than I'd like to admit as well but it does look great. I opted for the Mx4.

Be prepared for a longer install time for your Ranger vs the 1 hour install many reviews claimed. The bulkhead panel install is not easy. Space between the cab and bed requires skinny, agile fingers with a rather sloppy fastener. If this is a new experience for you, be prepared for several hours to install 4 adapter plates, know that the rails will require a dense plastic shim (not supplied) for the center clamp on either side. After speaking with the manufacturer, I opted to bolt the bulkhead rail so as to get that rail level with side truck bed caps. The plastic shim was approximately 3/16". Since you will likely be on your back for this install, a nice dense rubber bed liner was much appreciated. Contractor, having all the tools, problem solver, call to manufacturer, video views, under achieving directions, Ranger retrofit packages- not wanting to admit, better part of 6 hours spent to install. Looks and works great though!

I ordered this cover based on the relatively easy install. The video never mentioned shims or adapter plates that are needed for the Ranger. I'm sending this thing back!

No-one has answered the question. Are the two drain hoses just left to empty into the truck bed? This doesn't seem right.

I agree with all the comments. Directions are not that good and the video does not show everything for a Ranger. I can't figure out what the four brackets (2 in front and 2 in back) are supposed to do? My truck came with a plastic bed liner and in the directions it says to remove the liner to install them. Seems like a big task. Does anyone of pictures of the brackets installed on their truck? Also, did you install the foam strip on the front rail like he shows at minute 2:27? I thought that was only needed if the front rail was not level with the side rail.

Had a backflip briefly on a Tacoma and it leaked. Switched to Undercover and have that now on my Ranger.

Does that accessory rail come in the kit? Just got one of these and didn't open the box yet. Or is this something you order extra. I have a spray liner in my truck and not sure if the adhesive is going to stick to the bulkhead. But with that it may work. Update, yes it does come in the kit. So should be good to go.

Seems like a really good product (I'm expecting mine to come in today). Do the drain hoses really just sit on the bed, dumping the water into it? That doesn't seem like a good design. I've seen another installation of a BAKFlip MX4 cover on a F-150, and they drill holes in some covers. I don't really want to do that... Also, my bed has a spray-on liner, so I'm not sure how the accessory rail mounting and removing the hole covers is going to go.

Those bulkhead mounts are garbage, just watch the rubber twist up to hold it in place, just bin them and use a couple of rivnuts with some sikaflex or something similar on them and there shouldn't be any dramas, that's what I would do
