I have a manual Toyota 86 don't even know why I'm watching this LOL

I went from an 8th gen Si to two VWs and now an M2. The Si will always hold a special place in my heart for how fun it is for the cost.

I can’t help but wonder how much more fun would the 86 be with the same torque as the Civic Si (an additional 41 lb ft). I like the Civic’s blue paint better than the 86’s blue; it’s less consistently good looking, but has more potential to look good.

The 86 automatic in Standard mode using the shifting Paddles you'll fall in love with the car. Then on the interstate put in in Auto and Drive to save fuel.

Love the Civic for it’s practicality and features plus it’s a blast to drive and is easier in daily commute thanks to the turbo you don’t have to downshift as often to speed up

My 2019 Brz is my dream car and I bought it for 25k US back in January. Best car purchase EVER! Drives like a dream! (It’s my daily driver and traffic with the 6speed doesn’t suck that bad for what it is plus I can just romp on it once the traffic clears and glide through the gears 👍👍👍

Got my Si 3 weeks ago and have been watching StraightPipes for about as long (the Type R video from a bit back pulled me in actually) and now they come out with this. Let's just say I am happy.

I prefer the front of the Civic, but the rear of the 86.... Overall I'd buy the Civic Si

I have a '19 Si sedan, and at 6'3" with 35" inseam I can sit behind myself. And the trunk is huge. Car is the size of a previous generation Accord, yet very sporty and light. It's definitely the way to go at this price point.

I just picked up a 10th gen Civic Si Sedan. I love it! It's great for daily. It comes fully loaded with everything. If I wanted a Sports car I would of gotten a used 370z and slapped on some bolt-ons for the price of a new (outdated) 86. The car being RWD or FWD doesn't make a difference 90% of the time you drive. Only when you push it to the limits or take it the track is where it matters. Coming from a Nissan 240SX and an Infiniti G35, the Civic Si handles corners like a champ.

I just got the Civic Si a week ago and am really enjoying it. It is really forgiving to people new at driving manual as well.

I have a turbo charged 2017 Civic sedan, and I love it. Having SI would be even better!

Pretty sure the Si doesn't turn off traction completely with just one click. You need to this sequence : 1. Turn car on 2. Parking brake off 3. Press and hold brake pedal 4. Turn traction control on and off 5. Parking brake on 6. Release brake pedal 7. Turn traction control on and off 8. Press and hold brake pedal 9. Turn traction control on and off I've tried this in a 2018 model, which will make the VSA lights turn on and the "off" light blinking. Unless they've changed this in the 2019 model

I think, unless you're going to be tracking the car often, or you just REALLY want RWD, the Civic wins hands down as a daily driver, even against the BRZ in manual. Just simply 5k cheaper, more torque, better fuel economy (probably), more cargo and rear passenger space, interior amenities etc. If you really wanted a RWD sports car for 35K I would get a Miata ND at that point lol

I always prefer RWD, but manual FWD over automatic RWD any day

First of all, who in the world would buy an automatic 86? Those cars shouldn't even come with anything other than a manual transmission. Second, FWD Maunual for sure. #SaveTheManuals

Came back to this video now that I’m 18 and have money to buy a car and a used Auto 86/BRZ is as tempting as can be for a daily, once again cheers for the video lads

Shame I just found this video, my adopted sister just got her hands on a 2020 Civic Si, whereas I got an auto Oceanic 2019 86 GT this past Fall as my first car, in an auto, and I don't regret it one bit. It handles smooth, it turns like a dream, and the only things I've considered changing (or already changed) were the stock "nav upgrade" head unit (stupid idea to put such a slow 2005-era HU in a brand new car, jfc) for a wireless AA Pioneer unit, and a set of Tein coilovers to smooth out the road bumpiness. A great daily for an awful work commute (40-50 miles daily in DC traffic) and for shredding those curvy, hilly rural roads that I take instead of the highway. Only thing I dislike so far is that Audis and Teslas like to pick on me over my "speed" deficiency. I try to pay them no mind, though, let their asses get pulled over for trying to race me, lol. Actually considering the manual if my work commute changes, though. I understand the concept and have applied it in practice, but I didn't want to deal with that in a daily. Great car, even in an automatic, and I hope others see this.

17:10 reverse was kinda trippy lol...it's like when you're parked and the car beside you reverses and it feels like your car is moving forward

I was cross shopping a 2014 BRZ and a 2015 Civic Si Coupe. I ended up going for the Si. They are both super slow compared to what I was used to, but the Si felt faster to me. The handling was surprisingly close between them. I mainly went for the Si because the sound system was better, it would handle better in winter, and it had better space in the rear seats. In both cases, I had the long term goal of Supercharging it, and once Supercharged, the BRZ would probably be a LOT more fun. But I wasn't willing to sacrifice passenger comfort and winter drivability. Plus, something about having the last ever VTEC Si seems special. It has the k24 engine, which is just peppy enough to be fun, and once supercharged, knowing it will maintain that rev happy, VTEC characteristic just appeals to me. I could have gotten a newer Si for pretty much the exact same price, but making a new one make more power would involve a bigger turbo, which would create lag. And that is not what a Civic should be about. Both of them are super disappointing compared to my heavily modified WRX in terms of driving dynamics and power, but I couldn't justify replacing all the shit I kept breaking on that car anymore lol

The BRZ automatic gear ratios are more for fuel efficiency than performance while the manual version is more geared for performance (The reason why the manual gets worse average fuel economy than automatic)

The price difference 😬. You get wayyyyy more out of the civic.

I had a manual Toyota 86 a couple of years ago and I loved it. Btw! Civic "Si" has to stand for "Send it", right?

I haven’t driven either one but the 86 looks so much better than the Civic. But the radio in the 86 looks like someone went to Best Buy and bought the least expensive head unit that fit, that car really needs a refresh. But to me Miata is always the answer.

The 86 had no chance. They didnt drive them hard so the wheels dont make enough of a difference. This is a really poor comparison

What a great comparison and a great idea. For me it would be FWD manual all the way! As much as I like RWD there is just something about rowing your own gears in a car with a good manual that can't be beat and Honda makes amazing manuals AND Honda knows how to make FWD cars. To be honest, not having a manual is what I really miss from a lot of "modern" sports cars and super cars. It is no accident that I am a FK8 Honda Civic Type R owner. People just need to learn how to drive manual. IMHO I believe manuals also help save lives because when you are in a manual it forces you to focus on driving and to use both hands when you are driving. I can't tell you how many people I have seen texting or using their phones while driving automatics. You just can't do that in a manual. If Honda stops making manuals it would be a huge loss to the automotive community.

On the phone slot, I had gotten my Galaxy S3, the next day my FRS. The phone fit perfectly. The current larger phones no longer fit, so blame the phone companies for that.

I've owned my FR-S for nearly 7 years and have never - EVER - had anyone in the backseats. I just don't know any circus contortionists. My Miata has more backseat room.... *crickets*

I'm kinda a fan of the gt86/frs/brz just cause they are the sports car we noticed most people use for drifts

I've been driving a brz for the last 5 years, and sometimes I feel like it's time to go for some other car, but I just can't find the right replacement for it. It's such a good car, and it's really fun to drive. It would be a waste to spend money on something else because for sure I'd regret it !

As an auto brz owner the paddle shifters offer a great experience when you want manual control and chuck it in auto while stuck in traffic. I’ve never had a more fun car to drive!

Eh I went from a 5 speed manual to a auto FRS and it’s a ton of fun. Sometimes I get auto, sometimes manual, just depends on what I’m looking at and how it feels. The auto FRS saved me $10k, I got it for so cheap, and it’s a blast I love this car by far my favourite car I’ve ever owned.

Forgot to mention that the Si's seat goes up and down, for height adjustment. I have the first 10th gen Si (2017) and I'm 6'3"

Great video guys. I think its fairly evident that the Toyota 86 is meant to be in manual. Not that its bad in automatic, but the manual is better. This comparison is fair, but I think there are some better comparisons. In my opinion, I think an interesting comparison would be the manual Toyota 86 TRD edition vs the Honda Civic SI HFP. Although, we're still comparing apples to oranges with a rwd vs fwd car. I think the Toyota 86 TRD vs the new Mazda Miata would be a good comparison as well. RWD coupe vs RWD coupe. The Toyotas interior seems refreshingly retro to me at this point. Missing some of the gadgets we now expect in 2019 cars, but thats ok with me.

I daily drive a 2018 Civic Si with full bolt ons ... I dusted a 350z earlier no problem . Same thing with an EcoBoost mustang's

The Civic Si isn't as disgusting to look at as the Civic Type R so I guess that's a notch on it's belt...

I scooped up a 2020 Si Coupe - drove 2 hours one way to get - one of the last around in black. Very happy. Not so much power as to earn regular speeding tickets. Feels oh so good in the twisties. Cheap on gas, even premium. The perfect mid-life crisis car.

I love the toybaru but it's just too damn expensive for what you get when compared to the market... For that kinda money it should have the WRX motor in it..

Owned an automatic 86 for four years, added a Jackson supercharger after 30k. It was a great car, still miss it. The supercharger only added ~60hp, ~50tq, but that's all you really need in such a light car. Own a Stinger GT now because I need more cargo space, and I can honestly say I had the same amount of fun in my 86 that I do in the Stinger. BTW, you need to hold down the traction control button until TRAC OFF appears and stays on. You'll have a much easier time sidewaysing your 86. You really can't hold a drift for long with just the standard traction control off option, stability will kick in ~2-3 seconds into your drift and set you straight. Learned that the hard way on an exit ramp, straightened me right into a guard rail. I shed a manly tear for my baby, won't lie. Might look into getting the Stinger GT-S with AWD/RWD decoupling after it's been out for a year or two, really digging the Stinger. Would be nice if they made a Stinger coupe and kept the liftback, I'd be all over that. AWD is almost always quicker, but you do miss RWD, even with the Stinger's rear-bias, close but no cigar.

did I see you guys filming in GTIs around Rattlesnake Point Conservation area a few weeks ago? I saw someone with that same camera set up cruising up a cool little corner by the park that could be the NEXT cliche corner!

Chose the SI, Rally Red Coupe Ktuned 240 hp 310 tq all while getting 38 mpg on the highway, doesn't have that go cart feel of the 86 but it carves corners just fine.

My 09 Civic SI was a great little car, with the factory "aero kit" and 6 speed Manual, car had clean simple lines. Not a bunch of plastic up front. Also not a fan of the taillights, I think the SI gets uglier every year.

Love the lighter blue on the 86 since it reminds me of my FAVORITE color, Grabber Blue on Ford Mustangs. Not quite as vibrant, but still a pleasing color.

I got the Si but for sure love the 86. The Si is the one to get if you are looking for an everyday car.

Love your vids. Owning a '17 SI now, and having owned rwd sports cars, surprisingly the SI is one of the most fun cars to drive. The chassis work is so tight. And yes, sport mode does sharpen the handling and steering noticeably. Since the basic chassis is so good, the SI handles really well in normal mode. That is why you didn't feel the difference right away. One huh? moment watching your review: how did the 86 sound better? Not from the video, where you couldn't even hear it. Not close. Maybe it sounds better live. Not that either car's sound is making Fiat Abarth owners jealous. If they can hear their exhaust over the screaming plunge of their resale values. The 86/BRZ just seems like someone said 'hey, let's build a 280 ZX again.' Which is fine. I enjoyed that car too. And it had less lag from its six cylinder NA engine than the Toybaru twins. If a sports car is ever better with an automatic, then you are looking at a design fail. Great athletes are called 'clutch' players for a reason. Mic drop.

I own a 2019 SI. I installed an intake and hondata +9 PSI reflash. .5 lowering springs. To say huge difference would be a understatement. On that note, the 86 with a turbo would be a monster.

Can you explain the " push to STAR " please? Other her than this I think you 2 are a breath of fresh air and mostly right on with your opinions and your choices for your subjects.
