Gav Zell planting the 2019 winter crop in northern NSW Australia.
Pulled by a Baldwin the 214ft airseeder plants a hectare a minute.
This paddock was last sown in 2016 and has been fallowed since due to drought and lack of stored soil moisture.

With only 600HP pulling, it wouldn't go very fast in their soil conditions. To make that unit productive in US soil conditions, you'd need at least 1,000 HP. Even then, it is only 500HP per 100' of seeder. That soil looks really light and dried out. Easy to pull there. And Welker doesn't actually farm that much land.

@@SomeTechGuy666 it acctually looks like it might have been re-engined, all the other photos I've seen of a DP600 look shorter in the nose and have a single stack, and from what I'm reading on forums and news articles he's been running tandem master/slave JD9T's since 2011, and the baldwin is retired

Welkers do not farm much when considering there are farms in the US and Canada that produce over 50,000 acres. Welkers produce what? 5,000 acres? which is average for their area.

Like how evenly does the product go down, how much product, seeding depth, how many acres per fill, turning it around in headlands, hydraulics to lift and lower (flow?), do you pull it in anything but dry sandy soil, how big are the carts? Etc etc. Cool to watch but the detailed info would be interesting.
@jamesbarbour8400
@jamesbarbour8400 Год назад
Sure would. The Balwin tractor must have sat nav fitted to control accurate bout width matching. Driver is way too far away to see the end of the machine. In addition to the volume of oil flow required to lift the unit, the volume of air for those two seeder hoppers must also be pretty substantial. As big as the tractor is, it's certainly got its work cut out. Would be interesting to find out how an empty hopper or blocked distribution head is flagged up to the driver.

It is a vast flood plain of the Darling River system and very deep alluvial soils. Good years they can grow 6 tonnes/ha but in a drought zero. I’m from southern Australia where we use lots of fert and didn’t believe it but a quick look in their airseeder that had wheat in both bins proved the point.

I have a theoretical question for you guys... so obviously that Baldwin was repowered. I hear rumor it has a QSK19 (about 800hp). And that seeder runs at 6mph in the field. Since they went thru the trouble of dropping a new engine in that tractor why not install something closer to 1000hp and run that rig at 7 or 8 mph?
@TheMetalButcher
@TheMetalButcher 5 лет назад
Need a disk drill for those speeds, or at least I've heard.
@Hick25
@Hick25 5 лет назад
hp of the tractor doesn’t regulate the speed that you can seed, the implement determines that
@WillKenly
@WillKenly 5 лет назад
Interesting! but why would that type of seeder need to run slow? I know direct seeding takes a lot of force which is why I assumed power was the problem. But the whole rig was custom made for them so why not plan to run it faster and size all of the necessary components larger?
@Hick25
@Hick25 5 лет назад
Will Kenly i’m not sure mate
@leftlink_
@leftlink_ 5 лет назад
@@WillKenly Normally the speed limitation while seeding has multiple reasons. First being wear and tear of the parts in the ground, the faster you go the more friction you have. That means more heat that softens the materials, which increases wear. Next thing is seeding depth, which is best if it's constant, at higher speeds there is less time to adapt to changing ground. And at higher speed the force pushing against the seeder in the ground is higher, and due to stone safety mechanisms(don't know the english word) , that impacts seeding depth as well. And the force on the connecting beam between the seeder and tractor is higher as well, which is probably pretty high as is. So, all in all, going faster might look faster, but I think due to yield and maintenance cost, its more efficient to go slower. Edit : And I forgot the most obvious reason to not upgrade the engine, you probably wouldn't get the power to the ground. Either the transmission will fail or the tires will spin.

@landlifem5872 5 лет назад
Big bud shouldn't really be in the description as it may confuse some. Baldwin was just an Australian built tractor, I'm pretty sure Baldwin was mostly involved in earthmoving gear, but did build tractors for a time while there was a demand for large powerful tractors that big brand names didn't build. Other Australian built tractors built in similar Times was Waltanna an Upton.
@kaharry055
@kaharry055 5 лет назад
Great video. That tractor has been really looked after or very well restored to look like that. Also GPS wasn’t around then so a few upgrades too. Baldwin was (or is?) a railway engine manufacturer so they had experience with building heavy machinery. In the late 1970’s & 80’s large scale farming in Australia expanded and there was a need for big horsepower tractors and big equipment. They weren’t available from the usual brands at machinery dealers then. At the time blade plowing was one of the methods used and required heavy duty high horsepower tractors. I don’t know the numbers but there wouldn’t have been many of these built. I remember seeing a Baldwin on display at Ag-Quip near Gunnedah in the 80’s.

@kadendonnay2663
@kadendonnay2663 5 лет назад
@@timothylessing4774 So if they still had the KTA 1150 why do they have 2 air cleaners and 2 exhaust stacks? Plus KTA's don't put out enough to pull that rig properly unless they are turned up to 750 which drastically shortens their life in severe service applications. Are you positive it is a KTA yet?
