Great video. Had a President reel that had horrible line lay. Replaced it with a Penn Pursuit III and love it. Perfect line lay and built Like a tank.

When I first started seriously saltwater fishing I bought a Penn Spinfisher V 4000 based on some other reviews I've seen. Then a Daiwa BG 4000. The BG holds quite a bite more line for its size and has held up well. Since then based on your reviews and my experience I bought a BG 5000. Now I'm researching a small 3000 size reel. The Fuego or a Penn Fierce III came up first on my radar. I'm always amazed by what you find inside of the reels you review. Thanks for the great reviews on the things that make a reel worth buying, durablilty.

I can really appreciate this review. I've been leaning towards the new Daiwa Ballistic 6k over the proven saragosa 6k. This really made me feel better about going with a new lighter reel that can still handle Snook, Jack's, and Tarpon.. Thanks!

This was interesting. Haven't had a lot of luck with the Daiwa BG 4000. Had to order a slew of parts today to get it back going again. Your tutorial on the reel was a huge help. This time I am going to go thru those bearings properly. It is my fishing partners reel and I encouraged him to buy it so I feel obligated to maintain it for him. The gears are holding up well though so there is definitely something to the oversize gears. The Penn spinfishers have been doing well. They are at a little higher price point than the daiwa's though. Only thing that has caused me grief with them is their bail trip mechanism.

Most of my reels are Daiwa on mid budget. Got a smooth cranking Shimano Sahara but it's not strong in winding ! Use an Okuma but the gears give a grinding noise after a few months. My old Ryobi Applause is still strong but need a bigger knob to fight bigger fish but his extra bearing Vertigo have a quality issue. The bag is good but a little heavy. Got a free Maguro Venom with good spec from a fishing show and it got grinding gear noise like Okuma. But others are fine. Wrongly bought an Abu magnesium MGX, but can't use on Saltie ! ☹️

Awesome channel with great content! I know you have mentioned that Daiwa has you on their “VIP” list and I hope and pray that they don’t add you to their payroll and your reviews always stay unbiased. Its great to have someone tearing down these reels and exposing the build quality of one to another. This will only encourage companies to up their game and put out quality stuff. Hopefully your channel grows and don’t let any of these big name reel companies buy your honesty out to glorify their products over another. Keep up the great work!

+Fish4Life thanks as always man. I wouldn't say it like they have me. I fellow sol member works for a Jones and company which is a US Daiwa distributor. They sell other brands. I've known him for awhile and we've become friends. He knows I do these vids and that I got them through their vip program. But Daiwa hasn't the slightest clue from what I know. The only kick back I've ever received was when I spoke to crazy Alberto knie yesterday and he offered me some goodies. Be he specifically said he doesn't want any unfair press in exchange. But he knows where I come from so it was nice to hear. If I get picked up by a company I assume all reviews would have to cease due to conflict of interest or some shit. But I'd like to see what I can do on my own. And in terms of the stuff I've bought through vip.... It was all flagship stuff until this order.. And who wouldn't want steez and saltiga reels for 40 percent off no tax and 30$shipping which is what I think I paid
@bigfishcb
@bigfishcb 6 лет назад
Tackle Advisors that’s awesome man. Me personally I have always been a Shimano and Daiwa fan, I own more Shimano reels however simply because their customer service is second to none. I own both flagship reels which I generally use for specific purposes. I own a Stella SW14K which I use for targeting Tarpon and Blacktip sharks from the beach (Florida) and I use my Dogfight when I’m bottom fishing for big Grouper and Amberjacks. I’m a sucker for high end stuff and I’ve dumped a lot of money on gear that I don’t even use just because I need to have it! By watching your videos I’ve come to realize I’ve been investing wisely with these two companies! On the down side now you got me wanting an Exsence! Hahaha!

A few years ago I decided i was don with shim daiwa....bought abu and floogers top of the line....The flooger patriarch for 250 had a gear of lower quality than a shimano saros. And it's multipiece spool with carbon fiber is actually heavier than the new daiwa lt's..lol Every time I tried another product...They didn't have that same feel that the big two offer. I have a stella 10k / 8k pg for jigging and a saltiga 5k for...umm....something i haven't quite figure out yet...lol You're lucky to be in fl........every time i'm down there I spend the next week after i get home on zillow looking up real estate...and kicking myself for not buying 7 years ago. And yeah...that exsence is sweet...i honestly like it more than the stella fi. NO BS

I'm trying to find out if the Daiwa BG 2000 handle/arm will screw into the BG 2500. I'm looking at the BG2500 to use for freshwater bass fishing. If the threads are the same on the inside then i'm going to go ahead and get the 2000 handle and use it with the 2500.
@BassManStrikes
@BassManStrikes 5 лет назад
I picked up a 2nd Fuego LT in 3000 and it's the exact same as the 2500 except with a bigger spool. I took the spool from the 3000 and put it on the 2500 no problem, so if one could find spare spools you can have a 6.2:1 3000 😀👍 Handles are also the same except the 3000 has a t knob which isn't as bad as I thought because it is not super fat like the ones on the BG.
@alexntx333
@alexntx333 5 лет назад
Thank you, Thank you. Those are two questions I needed more info on. I fish in Texas in the Lower Laguna Madre from a Shallow Sport '15 classic boat. love using a t handle knob and really love using 10 pound braid (Power Pro) in yellow and find it easier buying it in 150 yards and flipping it after 6 months, and yes I use a little mono as backing.. Since I fish from a boat I think 150 yards is plenty. So I will probably pick up a Fuego LT 2500 and order a t handle for it, should work.

Could you recommend a 4000 size spinning reel for kayak fishing? I have two Penn Battle 2 4000s and they have served me well although they are still fairly new and get serviced regularly. I bought them because of the seals. My reels get dunked quite often in salt water and I was tired of burning through cheaper reels. I didn't know there were other options out there that may be much better and priced the same. Great channel by the way.

I have been such a big Shimano guy and the last 4 yrs or so i found myself buying 6 Daiwa reels. Nothing wrong with Shimmy, and eventually i will buy more of them, i just cant say no to Daiwa when looking at the specs (and price)!
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
The two companies are awesome competitors....In the past It seems like they have certain price points where they are very different. Some periods one is better than the other. Now it seems daiwa is pushing value. Shimano is offering tons of high end. I wonder what is going to happen when daiwa starts putting monocoque in 150$ reels
@coolvid
@coolvid 6 лет назад
Tackle Advisors ... you’re right, and to combat Daiwa, i suspected the reason why Shimano wedged in the $100 NASCI to the lineup (imo). But you’re right if i need to get a $250+ reel, i would definitely take a hard look at Shimano but not an automatic purchase as it was years ago. But we’re lucky to live in a time with such great gear from many Companies. Thanks for the vids, your effort is appreciated.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
Bingo..they had to put something out....But it's not a bg and the socorro sw....I don't know what the hell the point of that thing is....it's pretty junky....it's like a baitrunner without the baitrunner....but feels even more plasticy. It's great when nothing is guaranteed and automatic. I like the companies competing. It works for everyone
@coolvid
@coolvid 6 лет назад
Tackle Advisors ... exactly which is why i went with a BG instead of the NASCI. I think companies need to rethink how they make reels knowing damn well there are guys like you and Alan Hawk ripping apart their offerings and poking around. I’m not bashing Shimano, i think they’re still a great company with lots of goodies, but the others are leveling the playing field (except Penn uugh) - competition is good as only we, the end buyers, can benefit.

Hi Tackle Advisors. I am new to fishing and i would like to buy a Daiwa Fuego Lt spinning reel but i could not decide between the 3000 series and the 5000 series. The fuego lt 5000 series is about 1.23Oz(35gm) heavier than the 3000 series but has more drag(12kg instead of 10kg). I would prefer to go with the 5000 series but i would want to have an expert view. Please advise if the 1.23Oz (difference in weight) would matter if i go with the 5000 and if 8.82Oz(250gm- Weight of the fuego 5000 lt weight) is considered a heavy reel compared to the 3000 fuego lt(7.58Oz,215gm).I will use it for inshore casting. Thank you very much :) @Tackle Advisors

Penn has the better the better handle and bail, other than that the BG wins in every category. With that being said I still picked up a battle 2. I just preferred the feel of it. Told my dad to go with a BG though because It's definitely the smoother reel.

Quick question ik it might seem stupid but what would you say the average casting distance a typical baitcaster should cast and ik it varies depending on reel line rods ect this is something I've never seen anyone cover ik people talk about distance casting light baits but what's a general average for something like t-rigs or something like 1/4 and 3/8oz baits
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
Hey Josh...Good question. I've said it a million times......90 % of all baitcasters will throw within 10% of one another. Put a Megabass Lin or Antares DC vs a kastking.....and they'll cast shockingly close to one another using the same line lure rod and conditions. It all has to do with how low in the braking you can go. And centrifugal brakes and mag brakes while different and come in at different times....Usually brake similarly enough to be close....3/8 megabass 110 jerk baits...should get to 130 to 150......where as a rapala shadow rap shad will go 170 to 190. Football jigs and spinnerbaits 100-130 for your weight range. I can throw a wacky rigged senko 100-120 feet. And a texas rigged 140 to 160.... I did tons of casting tests over the years...never really posted them on my channel since they didn't really prove much other than how similar they all threw....now for long range saltwater reels that's a completely different story.
@Sasuke64401

Thanks man I appreciate the fast response this just the info I was lookin for looks like I need to step my casting game up lol I normally use abu garcia just got a gen 4 revo sx lookin to get the stx next I can normally get within 80 to 120 with a 1/4oz t-rig
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
You're welcome That is good distance.....easy way to improve it....purge the bearings and and add a single drop of tsi 321 oil. (i'll cut it with alcohol so it applies less oil and apply a single drop of that)....and you'll be good for a few weeks at top performance. Less oil in the bearings is always best for freshwater. No spool tension is needed either. Use only you thumb and the brakes of the reel.

No not at all. But i have a habit of rotating the bail so it locks against the bail trip ramp. That way no momentum can be gained by the weight of the handle. I'm not someone that has ever had that isse on any reel including surf reels. Also the new handles on these reels are very light!

i have question, im looking for a 3000 size reel to match on a ugly stik 5,10 medium , i would use it from the kayak in saltwater it should be about 100-120 dollars, i see so many reviews on everything, basicaly im lost, so many stuff out there, i would apreciate any sugestion, im looking to catch seabass (not striped bass) and bluefish
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
For yakking...and snag pulling.....with braid.....I'd go conventional. I don't know of a 3k sized spinner that would hold up long to that sort of thing in that price range. If you expect to get hung up often. I'd say just go with a cheap penn fierce and grease the sideplate ingress points. And toss it when it dies. In my neck of the woods seabass fishing involves lots of structure and wrecks. And lots of lead to get baits down. If you want a quality reel that may hold up a bit. The shield in that size isn't fully sealed it's not the greatest of reels but it should hold up well if getting splashed and wet often. The BG is the sturdiest of the bunch but offers no sealing and has ball bearings that will become issues. So for what you're doing...I'd honestly lean for something disposable. If you went with a conventional setup. An Avet and ugly stick tiger would be a tank.
@SharkClarkLeon

im planning to fish only in the bay and on calm days, i usualy only do ultra light stuff and im catching my bluefish on a ul ugly stick 7 ft on a stardic ci4 2500 , i dont like baitcasters that much because im throwing 15 too 30 grams poppers and plugs and i wouldnt know what baitcaster to get for that and spinning reels are alot easier to use. so for yaking i feel the same but if baitcaster are the more reliable thing too use than hit me up with some recomendations, and thank you for taking you time to reply im really greatefull for that!

Hey Andy, I think you'll enjoy fishing the Fuego over the battle. It weighs less, fishes very well. And for the money i think you get overall better performance. Hi, you and Alan hawk are masters of what you are doing, and I have same hoppy, I came with some conclusions about gear size and teeth design. The small diameter gearing is mutch better, handle length, always with reel size, handle knobe always ends in the line roller, that means larger gear low torque, larger fish wil stop you turning the handle, also shimano micro modules 2, which dividing turning power on many teeth rather than single teeth in the same space size, Daiwa bigger gearing came with low power torque, this is my idea and will be glad to discuss with you further more, Merry Christmas 🎄🎅🔔❄and happy new year, waiting your kind reply, regards Sam

Good question....It appears to have a different color spool than the battle but they gave it a platic rotor and pink knob....either way it can't be much of a downgrade...and it definitely isn't much of an upgrade....although the rotor may weight less which could mean less rotation start up inertia

Great video. I hate to sound like a dick to everyone , but I'd rather buy a high end Shimano or a Van Staal and not have to worry about any of these issues. Shimano has great service and warranties, and Van Staal builds physically superior spinning reels that last. I'd rather buy a reel once than deal with failure after failure in an inferior product , especially in salt water.

Your reviews convinced me to buy a Fuego LT 3000. Went to spool it and the line lay is to the bottom. It seems like the spool bearing needs to come off in order to add/remove the spool washers but that whole stack on the spindle seems to be locked in place. How did you remove those parts?

I was looking at the pen battle 2 6or8k size , but the daiwa bg 6500 or 8000 looks just as nice . Great price also. According to the specs on amazon the 6500 weighs more than the 8000 Is that a type 0? On the fence on which reel to get 🤔 durability matters most I don't care if the reel weighs 2.5 lbs😨lol . I like fishing for big channel cats averaging 20lbs or slightly more. I wouldn't mind something that could handle sturgeon fishing one day also. Personally 150$ is a good price range for spinning gear

I'm not going to stop ya from buying a gigantic reel. But keep in mind the spool diameter may not play nice with the guide spacing on the rod. I just grabbed a saltiga and saltist 5000 and they are to be used fishing for 20 to 50lb stripers in a 6 kts current....and for tuna 100-200lbs using 30lbs of drag. Keep that in mind. There are a number of things about the BG that make it an all around better product than the Battle. It's not an opinion either. It's a better tool. There's too much to list in the comment section but it goes beyond the gear size.

Tackle Advisors o yes line guide spacing, good call . I never would have thought of such a thing. largest rod I have is a ugly stick 10ft big water , nothing fancy. Would a 6k or 8k in either reel be a bit much for the rod?

Tackle Advisors no instagram. I have a 65 okuma baitruner, it's pretty bulky. My 50 size okuma crapped out this past summer after replacing the handle.. something inside is causing the spool to spin backwards with no drag pressure at all 😖?don't want another because of the less moving parts . I've been going off the line capacity to get an idea of the size . Videos are hard to gage size unfortunately, if I get a larger reel and it's to big. at least I have an excuse to go rod shopping 😃 thanks for the helpful videos and replys, leaning towards daiwa bg

Cant't constructively comment on the matter of size, MAYBE, Penn's main gear are made of something much more durable or maybe not. One thing I agree on is Daiwa's making progress. I still wont buy them because of Magsealed and problem with maintenance, but the fact is, it does look like they've made a nice products this year. Anyway, nice video

That's just it. The only reels from penn I'd consider buying are the upgraded Spinfisher, Slammer, Torque. Everything else is junk....and has been for over a decade since the original slammers spinfishers and z's. Lots of guys have issues with their zinc gears failing. Daiwa has always made great reels....I just think that the past two years they said Eff you to everyone else in the 99$ range and said...It's mine...lol I like the mag seal. and find it easy to deal with. Even if you buy the magician kit ferrofluid for cheap...it'll still work.
@i.o.3563
@i.o.3563 6 лет назад
Well, that's a matter of a personal take on situation, I believe. Having Shimano I can(or a service specialist) maintain my reel with bunch of different greases and oils, recommended DG series or any more efficient fully synthetic like ZPI, MTCW and others . There are few catches wit this ferromagnetic fluid. It's difficult if not impossible to get original. Alternatives may not work properly as the fluid has it's specifications like viscosity, level of magnetism and quite a few others. To match all of those ... well, you understand. I am not telling it's impossible, but damn, it's so much more straightforward with Shimanos.

They've supplied me with some tuna rods and gear. a few poinds of stick shads and lures to autopsy. They're great guys and they send my vids out to their email distribution list. I've been friends with one of the guys there for over 10 years since he managed my local shop that closed down and they snatched him up. I've always wanted to do the icast thing....but now I worry I'll get round house kicked when i'm not lookin. And now adays...i cast doesn't show off anything new. It's all stuff that distributors have chosen to bring over that was announced earlier in the year. I've been invited every year for a decade...and the time i did go down there. I stayed down in the keys and daytime sworded instead lmao. SO I think 2010 was the closest i've ever been to icast lmao...Although it'd be awesome walking around shitting on all the junk coming out and live streaming it lmao

In these lighter duty reels, does the heft of the gear really play any role in life? Or put another way, are you ever going to wear out either of these in a life of fishing?
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
Excellent point. I've always found through experience. The larger gear set will last longer. Perfect example. SLinging lead on old baitrunner 4500s and 6500s. Killed 4500s in a season. Sold off 6500s years later in like new condition. It's more of a holy crap that's huge...and man..the penn is the tinyest on the table while being one of the largest reels...and more people complain about stripped penn gears than any saltwater reel out. I've seen Battle 1's fail first hand. And as shown by elias. Small reels aren't usually used for small fish. He was using the 3000 which is a bigger spool and lower gear ratio. ANd killed it down in florida over the course of a month. The fact it's still alive is impressive. Jacks, snook, tarpon.....are rough on gear. I wanted to separate this from the main review because i felt it was worth showing. And good for people to see before the entire comparison.

Great video and informative as always! But I don't even think that's a fair comparison. Penn Battle 2 was release 3-4 years ago. Comparing it to a newer 2017/2018 reel is not apples to apples. That's like comparing the new Iphone X to a 3-4 year model Phone. I would assume Daiwa had 3 years head start to improve on making it better. Would love to see if Penn release a Battle 3 version this year and then, the comparison can be on equal field
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
Thans Same! However I strongly disagree regarding the fairness due to age.....if it is still for sale by a for profit company it deserves to be compared to competitors. The saragosa and spheros has been around for some time as well..And I'll take a saragosa or spheros over a saltist which is last years reel. Age if current shouldn't be considered. Especially if no new reel has been announced. Keep in mind it is the 3rd most popular reel on amazon and sells 777 per month
@roninfishing1226
@roninfishing1226 6 лет назад
Tackle Advisors But assume if the Saltist this year model gearing is bigger than the older saragosa or spheros. Does that make it better then the saragosa or spheros? Or a knock on shimano for having smaller gear.? I have both the fuego lt and battle 3 for fresh and light saltwater application. No issue so far with both...
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
+Sam Tong but here's the rub. The trout sized reel offers a gear the same Size and material as the bluefish size reel. And tons of guys blow out the gears on battles and spinfisher reels. Enough that Penn now offers gear upgrade kits for the spinfisher... About saltist v Gosa.. Gosa wins due to the 100% sealing and better gear material. And right now on paper the Slammer 3 wins over the saragosa. Needs a season to prove out.. But I have seen many slammer complaints.. Where as rotor imbalance was pretty much the only issue early on with the Gosa

The bigger gear is probably how they make up the ratio with the smaller spool. has nothing to do with one being better than the other. just the physics of how they achieve the same ratio at different size spools.
@TackleAdvisors

Ratio pertains to rotor revolutions not spool revolutions. These are for spinning reels.. Penn gearing in many reels regardless of ratio has always been physically smaller

Just so you know, larger main gears aren't necessarily better. The larger the gear is, the farther away the gear teeth are from the center axis, which actually means you'll have to crank harder to do the same amount of work. Just laws of physics and the way leverage works. However, the thickness and material of the gear and the teeth do matter alot. Also if someone manages to strip any of those reels gears they probably dont knoe how to fish. The majority of the pressure should be on the drag during a fight not the gears unless you're horsing in the fish.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
Oh I get what you're saying. But the comparison between the two reels is pretty funny. If they were the same exact size and weight..It wouldn't be worth bringing up. But with the tiny little daiwa reel coming to the table a gear larger while being the same gear ratio. Than a reel nearly 2x it's size. that is worth something..in regards to stripping gears. Yes and know. Hang a fish in heavy current. And you have to winch. Hang cabbage in that same current same thing. Look at guys at the cape cod canal.....Blowin up reels daily. You're not fishing a fuego in those situations. But tons of guys have experienced failures with this price range of penns. That the BG hasn't. Or at least i haven't heard many complaints.
@BulIdozer
@BulIdozer 6 лет назад
I think youre wrong. If we had 2 identical reels where handle lenght is the same but gear diameter different, smaller diameter gear has more torque due to the leverage like slaymond said. It's the relation between handle length and gear diameter. But i think the larger gear diameter makes such a small difference in "cranking effort" it's nearly meaningless. If you needed more torgue for a big diameter gear, a slightly longer handle would do just that.
@Mrlippro1
@Mrlippro1 6 лет назад
The smaller gear will feel more "powerful" given the same cranking effort. BUT, the maximum cranking effort you can put on it before it fails will be lower than the max effort that the larger gear can handle. That's why reels for chasing big fish have big gears, not because the bigger gears are more "powerful" intrinsically, but because they allow you to muscle fish without failing.

Not going to get in a Penn debate they have some fine stuff and not so fine stuff just like anyone else. You will not convince me the conventional reels like the Senator or General purpose are bad reels. They have been around since you were born and will continue to be around when you are in the rest home and I will be long gone. As for size matters. Look at reels like you would a deferential in a car or truck. A Dayna 80 is better and stronger than a Dayna 60. But if a Dayna 80 isn't set up right and the 60 is the 60 is stronger. Another thing to consider is gear ratio. The higher the gear ratio in a reel the weaker the gear set up will be and more stress put on it. In a car the pinion drives the ring gear in a fishing reel the ring gear drives the pinion. So the stresses are backwards from each other. In other words if you want a fast retrieve with a reel you are sacrificing strength for speed so you need bigger gears but of equal tooth count on both gears ring and pinion. Now look at where braided line comes into play. You have rod that is rated at 20 pound test line and a reel that was once designed and sized for 165 yards 12 pound test mono and a 15 pound drag to go with it. You then put 260 yards of 20 or 185 yards of 30 pound braided on that same reel and mistreat by not knowing how to bring in a fish something has to give. It isn't the reels fault, it is people tearing them up out of ignorance and stupidity. Something more money wont cure.

Think the point was that other reels in that given price range are built, and can hold up, better. Regardless of everything if you pay the same amount and have to baby one reel but don't another, your gonna say it's a better reel.

I have all Penn's and a mechanical engineer, one thing bigger diameter ring gear isn't always stronger.The penn has a deeper mesh,and look at the angle of attack on the pinion.Bigger is not better, your not seeing the mechanical specs. The penn is deeper,at a better angle to allow perfect backlash,and depth of main to pinoion. You evaluating is just big and bigger. Has nothing to do with strength.
@richarde1355
@richarde1355 4 года назад
Ranger 1780 some interesting points, but your claim of being an engineer; engineering curriculum require the student to pass basic English and writing classes. Perhaps those classes weren’t your strength. You’re correct in some reapects; bigger is not necessarily better, and other aspects of the gear design may be just as, if not in some cases arguably more, important than the physical diameter of the gear. I believe the intent of the video is to show what some might consider the “over-design” mechanicals of the smaller sized reel relative to the larger Penn. My guess is Daiwa just attempts to keep manufacturing and assembly simple, and designed a certain sized gear to fit in a wide size range of reel. Just guessing.
