This is exactly what ive been waiting on from yamaha! Finally a twin cylinder 850 instead of the single 708 cc. Everything has been upgraded. The bed is way better, and i really like the overall dimensions that way it can fit on tight trails. Plus Yamaha has always had the best transmissions imo and now with the bigger motor, this is the machine for me!!
Yesterday, Yamaha just introduced a 10-year belt warranty so that pretty much confirms everything you say about their transmission reliability. Glad to hear you're enjoying the new Wolverine X2. If you decide to pick one up let us know how you like it in the long term.
I test drove the X4 at a dealer this week, and I was extremely impressed with how quiet and smooth riding it was. By comparison, the Can Am Commander 800 and Kaw Terex are rough riding with vibration and extremely noisy in the cab -- no way I'd own either one. Today I tried an '18 R-Spec with the 700cc single and it was a nice machine, but not nearly as powerful or smooth as the X4. I'm probably going to buy a Can Am Maverick Trail 800 DPS which I'm also impressed with, but I'm sure the X2 & X4 will be great sellers for Yamaha.
My next SXS for sure when end of year rebates come along, or sooner,,lol. I like the simplicity of the Yamaha's 4wd and imo the best CVT system on the market. The R spec suspension is very nice, and the machine has a just right width to it for fun trail riding and great handling. Even though not the most powerful engine out there, the power delivery is what counts and it does that very well compared to other machines, not to mention smooth and quiet and cool in the cabin. Yeah sure I wished it was limited to a higher speed of 60-65mph so its easy to cruise at 50mph.for the fireroads in between the trails, but not at the expense of losing its low end-mid range punch and easy to break loose rear end in the woods..Once it hits the woods it easily keeps with or beats other machines with more power with its handling and power to the ground. Luckily I've gotten to really test several machines from friends and I like this Yamaha a lot and I have always had great success and reliability with Yamaha,,you can't put a price on that, and they are cheaper than most other brands! I liked the Pioner 1000 3 seater as well, it had more power and able to run 66mph down the road, but it didn't handle as good, or ride as well or feel as good in the cabin while flying through a trail, and its actually too wide for where I ride. As much as I like the new I FWD so I don't have to stop to put it in diff lock in a really tough situation the Yamaha system is tried and true and very reliable. Glad they put a dump bed on this machine as well as it is very handy when doing odd jobs. I also like having gears on the Honda, but if something were to break, clutches or shifting actuator etc. it would be an expensive repair for sure, and its not nearly as smooth as Yamaha's system...Don't get me wrong I think Honda builds a great machine as well..Just the Yamaha will work better for me for my trails and how I ride...I like them both over Can Am and especially Polaris as far as a long lasting machine,,I fix all my buddies machines for them. The Yamaha with normal maintenance should be on the trail for many many years without major issues and worth the investment...Looking forward to my new Yamaha coming soon...Getting the R spec edition shocks and would like to get some beadlock wheels as well..sorry for the long response...Have had alot of experience on a lot of bikes, atvs, and sxs over the years...I'm 52 this year and still enjoy riding enduro motorcycles as well..Good review...oh yamaha..fix that danged door latch for getting in and out...my only gripe...lol
Yes it was. I did talk to text and just clicked post without reading it. I said we hope we earned your subscription as well. We really appreciate the kind words and you taking the time to watch.
There are a number of things that they do better than a quad. Although, the ride on ATV segment still has a few key advantages that side-by-sides cannot compete with. The success of side-by-sides have certainly proven their worth in the Wolverine X2 is a great machine.
Timmi actually it wouldn't be that bad. There is ample room in the chassis and the CVT isn't that wide. If they had to they could rotate the engine perpendicular in the frame and do a threw shaft design offset outside then engine behind the CVT and it would fit fine
I presently own a Honda Pioneer 500 ( 50" wide machine) When I saw this new machine from Yamaha, I knew I wanted one immediately. So I started looking at the reviews, and of course they're all glowing, but several reviewers noted- and glossed over very quickly- that getting into it is somewhat annoying with that shoulder bolster, and that it was a little tight width-wise for us 'ahem' bigger guys. I finally made it to the dealer to look at one. **Keep in mind, I'm comparing it size-wise to my P-500.** First thing I see, is that it is huge, and I was completely shocked at how much bigger it is than the P-500- especially when it's being touted as a "nimble" trail machine, so that kinda shook me a bit, but still wanted it... till I sat in it. My left arm was completely outside the cage, and if you ride tight trails, or make them, you know how bad that could be, and that stupid bolster was totally dug into the back of my shoulder.... The center console eats up so much interior width, that the seats are pushed out too far. I seriously have way, way, way more room in my P-500(seat-wise anyways, cuz it has no storage space whatsoever) Even my wife said something before I could admit that this isn't going to work for me- she was cramped too. I can't tell you how disappointed I am..... Please Yamaha, make the console narrower!!! I guess I'm stuck with my Honda for a while :(
How about a 58" wide Viking with this engine? Now THAT would be a machine folks could get in to...literally! I want this buggy bad but being almost 53 years old, I want a two-person bench seat. I don't want the current land yacht sized Viking...c'mon Yamaha, build a 58" Viking that's not 122" long either please!
Had the chance to look at the X2 at the dealer the other day. It very well maybe the best balance well rounded all around machine on the market right now for east coast riding rec/utility. I really like it. But I’ll be keep my pioneer 500. Still X2 gets two thumbs up from me. Do wish the base model would come in green or camo though.
In regard to top speed complaints, a exhaust , intake , bigger tires and clutch kit along with a ECU flash removing limiters should put that complaint to rest.
Up graded from a 09 700 Rhino se, went with the r spec se in back water blue, will keep you posted in a few days when it comes in. Thoughts on, ride etc. can't wait!.
Well picked it up today only ran it about 12 miles on the trails near the dealership, WOW!! is this thing quiet, very nimble, precise steering, quick throttle response! & a smooth ride on sand & hard pack & some wooped out sections, could actually talk to the wife at 35-40 mph trail speeds without the front windshield on (it's on order for 248.00). Mark me down really impressed! Can't wait to take it & the wife out again this weekend. Go get one if you can, wish i could post up a pic. of it here, More later.....
@@silverhustlin1390 It's been great! now have over 3,900 trail miles on it & we run it hard sometimes with our off road club running with 1000 rzr's can ams etc, keeps up great in the trails. Couple things I did was upgrade to 28-10-14 wheels & tires, removed the sway bars & softened up the factory KYB shocks, opened it up to check belt & the clutches still looked like new!.
@@garykline4761 What wheel and tires did you go with? Are you having any clearance issues with the 28's? I'm gonna be picking up a X2 within the week and I'm thinking of a tire and wheel upgrade before it leaves the dealer. Also did you have to install wheel spacers in the rear after the wheel/tire upgrade?
John Jenkins being a hundred percent honest with you John we are based in the east coast although we go out west to test often. At Brimstone or the places we ride here in Southern Ohio we would have a hard time getting this vehicle up to top speed. Unless you live out west or drive on dirt roads a lot top speed shouldn't be a real issue. We would like to try the stock car back to back with one of the larger Tire kits and the clutch kit to see how much more we gain on top. Overall, pretty darn good unit. Thanks for watching.
I would like to throw out an offer for you guys to come ride with my group in Central NY. 2 S900's, a 900 Trail, an R-Spec 700, a Wildcat Trail, and a few ATV's. We definitely get after it, put on the miles, and have a great time. Fast trails, technical climbs, and just about anything else you can think of sans sand.
Agreed. Big improvement in torque and power. Plenty for a sport/utility UTV. I know people want horsepower, they have pure sport UTV's for that purpose...
I liked the cab space of the Viking, but the engine size was a disappointment compared to a wolverine which was priced similarly. I like the size of the gray on the Viking but not sure if I needed that huge size, but the two seats on the wolverine is a disadvantage in my mind. Please help me decide.
I really wanted one, but we can't even sit in it. Has less room for occupants than my 50" Pioneer 500, and the other machines that we sat in and test drove comfortably- cfmoto 50" zforce 800 trail, the 60" cfmoto zforce 1000, and the RZR 1000. The Woverine was a huge disappointment, and even more so cuz I still want one. The reviewers had to notice what a p.i.t.a. the Wolverine was to get into and out of, and considering it's supposed to be a work machine as well, that you may need to get in and out of dozens of times a day, that that would be part of the review.....
Thanks for getting back with me would you say that the Yamaha X2 is more capable than the old 708 was it about the same or even less as far as that goes
We would save more capable on almost all accounts. The engine is definitely more powerful. It will have an easier time turning larger tires and wheels and a more powerful engine will typically have to work less if you regularly pull heavy loads. The twin cylinder engine runs smoother and although it's been awhile since we drove the 700 it seems like the new engine seems a little quieter. Of course, there's the dump bed if that interests you. We just picked one of these machines up to do a project on. Please feel free to head us back if you have any more questions.
My Parents 2017 SE seems to have 14 inchs of clearance sitting on the garage floor with stock bighorns.. once we set the shocks up mid way in the adjustments...and turned down the damping. They Ride with a canoe rack and it seems to handle pretty good. They did add a truck soft cargo bed mat to the roof and around the engine bay, airbox to less'n the engine noise and be able to talk to each other. They Valcrowed it in place and it's washable. I cant see upgrading to a 2019 for just 5 more MPH and dump box...Just saying.
Would you guys say that it rides better than the old 708 gen 1 Wolverine I mean does it handle the trails better is it a smoother ride or is it a rougher ride
Don't hold me to this because we didn't ride them in the same time frame, however, our thoughts were that the new machine rides slightly firmer then the Wolverine 700. We would say the right of the new machine is by no means objectionable however we feel they may have made it a bit firmer to better match the slightly narrower stance and increased horsepower. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions please hit us back.
Yamaha has always put out machines that take a beating and ask Soo little in return. I have a 13 year old grizzly that has performed flawlessly while my Can Am and Polaris buddies are always fixing something. Same seems to go for their side by sides. I'm not getting caught up in the hype. When it's time to buy, it's not going to be a piece of low quality garbage. In all likelihood it'll be one of the big 4 Japanese companies. I like to ride, not work on junk.
If you're looking for upgrading your CVT/sheave check out Dynojet results of Hunterworks vs JBS: www.wolverineforums.com/forum/268-x2-x4-cvt-sheaves-wet-clutch/28596-jbs-hunterworks-sheave-testing-tuned-dynojet-power-vision-2.html
Luke Hoover we're actually glad that they didn't use the 1,000 in this car. The 850 pulls much better off the bottom. This gives great throttle response and allows the machine to run quieter.
52 x 1.04 = 54.08 If they didn't properly calibrate the speedo for the stock 26" tires, that's GPS of 52 MPH. Better than nothing, but not a whole lot.
MassiveOverkill Yamaha told us that the machine had a 4% increase in top speed for this engine in 2019. We know you've driven the machine and we feel like it's geared a little low. We would like to see what the top speed of the machine is with a 2019 motor and their larger accessory tires. It didn't seem like the machine would have a hard time turning them.
I agree. With larger tires, that would give it an increase in top speed. You're also correct in that it's geared really low and you rarely need low, except under extreme load conditions. A machined sheave is necessary for 60+ MPH speeds. I think the optional 14-15 gram weights are a tad bit light given the 847's stroker motor unless you're running extremely large tires.
MassiveOverkill from what we gathered, Yamaha seems to think that the lighter clutch weights will equal out to nearly the same acceleration has the stock tires with the stock weights. We need more time with both to make up our own minds.
But if it's geared as low as ya'll say, that'd be great for people like us that do 30 inch and bigger mud tires. My shit box CF Moto has a great low side and it turns my 30's in all the deep mud that I've put it in so far. And in high, it'll still run 70+ MPH.
YAMAHA ; WOLVERINE X2 ; MOTOR 1.000 CC Muito Bom mesmo para Estradas de Campo Matas !!!… Trilhas ; Brejos ; Lamas !!!…………………YAMAHA Agora MOTOR de 2.000 CC Será ÓTIMO ; NEW Model LANÇAMENTOS ATÉ Ano 2020 NEW !!!…………YAMAHA …………………………………OK……………………………………………
Still five years behind Can Am and Polaris good quality though years late on a twin and way under powered comparing to the big two. Step in the right direction but hardly comparable to the two big brothers jmo
2 seats 💺 it’s very nice 👍 look great and I liked but 4 seats 💺 it’s kinda cheating worthless useless :( Who design with 4 seats 💺 must be a lonely no kids only dog 🐩 or a cat 🐈 :( let’s just say you get for passenger where are you going to put a water 💦 cooler food 🥘? I guess they were thinking something else not supposed to think when they design :(
Gary Woodgate most of them have 1000 cc engines Yamaha’s is 850 cc. You shouldn’t be more worried about torque Not HP. If your climbing rocks your want torque. Most side by side owners don’t want to go 80 mph if they want that they can get a atv or dirt bike
Boring! Who is Yamaha trying to compete with anybody? It don't look like it cuz they're clearly the underdog in the side-by-side category. And they seem to want to stay in that position.
Curtis Bull but the great things that can am and polaris don't have is on demand 4x4 way better when you are trying to crawl up something. Don't smoke belts and break axles. And to top it off it isn't so hot that you can't ride inside of it. It definitely needs more power, but overall they are improving slowly. At least they aren't over powering what they can't handle. Power is no good if it isn't reliable.
mark Minyard you're right on every point you made. I wouldn't argue with you one bit. But the thing is the majority of people that buy these things buy them for the thrill of it and the excitement. That is where Yamaha is lacking. And that's why can am and Polaris are outselling by Leaps and Bounds, even though people know the machine isn't going to be as reliable and there's a couple things such as the 4x4 system that aren't as good. But the fun factor is there and people like me are willing to take a little hit on reliability for the fun and excitement Factor.
Curtis Bull I can tell you that Yamaha knows they are the underdog and don’t want to stay from what I understand they have some pretty big plans in the works but only time will tell
Shadow Assassin I hope you're right. I've always liked Yamaha until these other companies started coming out with bigger and better stuff. I think Yamaha is fully capable of coming out with awesome suspension big horsepower and better than the rest reliability and dependability. They just need to get with the program.
